Cloning a HD to another HD

I have a Mac install on a HDD and I want to make a clone of it to another HDD. I have read about Carbon Copy Cloner and what not. My question is, if I use Carbon Copy Cloner or if I use the Disc Utility in Mac OS X, will the clone make an EXACT, bootable HDD clone? If I have Final Cut Studio installed on the HDD, will the clone HDD run Final Cut Studio without having to install again? Let me know. I want to do a "byte by byte" type of clone so all files, folders AND programs are transfered over. Thanks for the help!
GC

Yes
Carbon Copy CLoner - http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html - will make an exact clone that is bootable and is exactly the same as the original in all respects
I clone my system daily and have booted form the clone many times for various reasons
The easiest way to assure yourself is to do it and boot from the clone so you can persoanally test it - CCC does not have to be purchased to make a bootable clone - but once you are happy you certainly should pay the shareware fee - it is a great product and it is important to assure that it continues being supported

  • Cloning the GeneratedValue for another column during insert

    I have an entity for a MSSQL table with IDENTITY auto-generated primary key column. I want another column (int as well) to have the same value set during an insert.
    How can I do this using JPA? It's my understanding that the @Id and @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.IDENTITY) annotations can only be assigned to a single getter method.
    I tried using entityManager.createNativeQuery("SELECT IDENT_CURRENT('fooTable')").getResultList();but that doesn't return a resultset. Same problem if I use JDBC.

    This a Seam app and I'm using Hibernate manual flush. So alternatively I could do an insert using persist() then flush() then update using merge() then flush() all in one method (one transaction using CMT).

  • Cloning iphoto library to another computer

    I have created a series of slideshows and albums for a presentation on my tower that I need to move to my laptop. How can I copy my iphoto files to my laptop? My folder containing the docs, images and movies has been cloned to my laptop, but I'm not sure how to move the slideshows and albums from box to box.

    Assuming that you have copied your photos into the iPhoto Library Folder then the thing to do is copy your iPhoto Library Folder from home/pictures/ to the laptop.
    Do you already have a photo library on your laptop? Take care that you don't overwrite that one. If this cloning is temporary I suggest that you put the iPhoto Library Folder on the desktop. The start iPhoto holding down the option key. This will allow you to navigate to the cloned library.
    This should move everything over. However I strongly suggest that you check that all is working correctly before you finish.

  • Unable to copy redo-logs for cloning

    Hello
    We are using R12 with 10.2.0.2 db
    we take db tier backups every night and apps backup twice a month(15 days interval)
    We normally run autocfg.sh and adprecolne.pl on dbTier.After this we stop all services, shutdown the database and copy all the datafiles,controlfiles and logfiles)
    This backup is helpful in restoration in case any failure on PROD server and for cloning purpose on an another node for testing purpose
    Now my question is, are we doing the clone procedure properly or is there a better way for cloning for suppose RMAN..or maybe any other
    Secondly, Last night all the datafiles got copied after a clean shutdown except for logfiles.
    Will i be able to restore the data later if i dont have the log files? can i build new logfiles?
    Will this data be succesful for cloning without the redo logs
    Please Note: This is a cold backup we take i.e Consistent backup
    Thanks

    I would go against the oft-repeated and common "Expert" and "Documentation" advice here.
    If you are doing a COLD Backup and are are planning to use the Backup to restore to another server, there is no harm in taking the online redo logs as well.
    Where the risk with online redo log backups arises is when the SysAdmin/DBA , when doing a FullRestore also restores the online redo logs back to the target database overwriting any present online redo logs.
    For this to occcur :
    a. The SysAdmin/DBA happens to restore all the files in the backup set without selectively excluding the online redo logs
    b. The databases's online redo logs are present and good on disk
    c. The DBA isn't very confident of being able to rollforward through his redo logs
    It is for those reasons that it is easier to advice everyone not to backup online redo logs.
    However, as I've noted above, if you are doing a Cold Backup and restoring to another server (with no database present at the target site), there is no harm in taking the online redo logs. Such a backup and restore makes your scripting very easy and doesn't even need a DBA.

  • Cloning a StyledDocument?

    I have a StyledDocument with a DocumentListener registered on it. When the listener dispatches a DocumentEvent, I want to update the document (an autocomplete-type thingy). But DocumentListener doesn't allow me to update the document that's the source of the DocumentEvent...
    I thought of cloning the StyledDocument and updating the copy, but StyledDocument can't be cloned, so is there another way to create a copy of the object?

    We are on same boat. I am trying to Clone AD User. Had partial luck. I am able to create the Objects for my new AD. However Still haveing few things to try out.
    And I have the SR. But it will be slowest way.
    Better develop some knowledge on the Object.
    Try to run few iterations of trying with XML files.
    The only details from the Connector is available on this.
    From the Connector Documentation (Oracle Identity Manager Connector Guide for Microsoft Active Directory User Management - Release 9.1.1 - E11197-11):
    Section: 4.15.1
    To create a copy of the connector:
    1.     Create copies of the IT resource, resource object, process form, provisioning process, scheduled tasks, and lookup definitions that hold attribute mappings.
    2.     Create a copy of the Lookup.AD.Configuration lookup definition. In the copy that you create, change the values of the following entries to match the details of the process form copy that you create.
    •     ROUserID
    •     ROUserManager
    •     ROFormName
    •     ROUserGUID
    See "Configuring the Lookup.AD.Configuration Lookup Definition" for information about these entries.
    3.     Map the new process tasks to the copy of the Lookup.AD.Configuration lookup definition.

  • Cloned Server - Application Not Loading Jinitiator

    Hi All,

    I can enter through Browser and can login and select responsibility and Function. The problem is that when I select Function, it seems to load fast, but it doesn´t seem to do anything. No error, No Log in Jinitiator (seems to never start it). What should be happening?

  • HD Cloning Problem

    I have a G3 Pismo laptop running Tiger & a G4 desktop running Panther. The G4 HD is partitioned so that I can backup the Pismo’s HD to the G4’s HD partition. To do the cloning, I put the Pismo in Target Disk mode & interface it via Firewire to the G4. I have done this many times using the Restore feature of Disk Utility and CarbonCopy Cloner.
    However, now I’m having problems cloning. CCC stalled about 2/3 of the way on the first and several more attempts. Later I quit the cloning & restarted CCC and left it running over night, but had the same stall results. I got the same stall when using Disk Utility’s Restore function. I downloaded SuperDuper, but I still get the stall.
    I’ve run Disk Utility on the HD and run DiskWarrior v4 on the HD; with everything being OK. I’ve repaired Permissions. All of these cloning utilities must analyze the files somehow & stop the cloning if it finds a problem file. Both the Pismo & G4 are operating OK.
    Any suggestions as to what to do to solve this problem?
     Cheers, Tom

    First off, cloning one Mac to another is not recommended. This can especially be a problem if you attempt to use one Mac's installed operating system to boot another if they are a different model, or vintage of that model. System specific installation features may not work on one model that work on another. This limitation is not consistent. Some have been able to do this without issue, but you also run into license agreement restrictions as well. If you are doing that, stop! You are better off getting an external hard drive for cloning.
    You may not have sufficient space to store the clone. It is a generally accepted arbitrary maximum, but you should never let a hard drive get more than 85% full.
    Also a problem you may run into when cloning is if other applications are running while the clone takes place. To eliminate that problem, I let the computer stand alone when it is cloning, and run in a separate admin user that has no startup items installed. What generally makes a problem for this is the fact that any file that is being written when the backup happens, may only be partially written, and thus become corrupted in the copy. Creating a new one admin user will do that for you, and just simply not install anything on that user except make sure the backup software will run on it.

  • Deploying or Cloning OS

    Fairly new to the deployment world as far as Mac OS goes. We have bought 15 copies of Mountain Lion for deployment to a small division within the company.
    Hardware background: Select few have MacBook Pro Retinas, otherwise MacBook Pro 6,2 mostly with some as old as MacBook Pro 5,3. All have at least 4GB of RAM and will be getting SSD's.
    Software background: computers are currently on 10.6.8 mostly, some on 10.5.8. All need to be moved up to 10.8. Clean image is the preferred method instead of upgrading over the top of existing OS. Office will also be upgraded to 2011 and Adobe Creative Suite will be moving to CS6. Hardware
    Question is whether or not I can simply build a "master" image with all the Finder settings I want for all (Sharing/Energy Saving prefs etc), freeware (browsers, FTP) and licensed software (Office) then simply use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone it to the other machines.  I know there is DeployStudio, JAMF and likely other suites but we're looking for a very simple and quick solution here as we have limited Mac knowledge or resources to dedicate to researching how to get those suites going.
    Does cloning a mac to another lead to any strange behaviors once the clones are up and running?  Can the master and the clone be on the same network without problems?
    Hanging on to or setting up recovery partitions at the same time as the cloning process would be a nice bonus also.
    Thanks!

    Cloning a Mac to another Mac doesn't really lead to any issues, with a couple exceptions:
    1)  All the machines will have the same computer name or host name.
    2)  If you bind a machine to Active Directory before "cloning" it, then all machines will be bound to AD with the SAME computer name in AD.  If you unbind one of the machines, ALL of them will be unbound in a single swoop.  Not good ;-)
    So this "cloning" is a farily common technique used when people want to do a "quick and dirty" system to make a bunch of machines look and act the same.
    That said, building packages that can be installed with a tool like JAMF on top of the "stock" OS X configuration is a better route to go, though it takes longer to set up.  Also, note that this "cloning" approach WILL break should you ever get new machines.  It is not possible to deploy an image on hardware that's newer than the image, so there are times along the way that new machines come out and you'll need to create an entirely new image on the new hardware, hence the reason the "package-based" approach works better down the road: It assumes you're starting with Apple's installer and then installing packages which lay down configuration settings or applications on top of it.
    FWIW AFP548.com is probably the best site with any sorts of details you'd need here.

  • How to set up iTunes with an external hard drive so that there is not a double location for the iTunes Media folder

    Hi,
    A very helpful postee got to the end of his knowledge level, so I am posting this for you tech guys to sort out. Bit long because I've tried to set it out step by step. Briefly I'm new to iTunes and my laptop has a very small hard drive and is virtually full and due to be replaced. So I want to use an external hard drive.
    Now I know that iTunes installs itself to two locations: 1. Programs Files 2. Music. And its the Music location that bothers me.
    I asked about using an external hard disk to store the actual AAC files. I was advised that in order to change the loaction of the iTunes media folder I was should employ preferences/advanced/ and this is what i saw (as you would expect):
    Then I hooked up my hard drive, hit 'change', and this is what I saw:
    I was a bit worried by the lack of pathway details, but assumed it must have done something on the external drive, so I looked on  it and this is what i saw (highlighted):
    But compare this with what was in the directory I attempted to reproduce, viz in the iTunes folder in /laptop/Music/iTunes:
    A ton of stuff. The only stuff that corresponded with what iTunes had created on my external hard drive was in Music/iTunes/iTunes Media folder:
    Now this suggests that there are TWO locations for my preferences. The advanced tab only allowed me to ADD an extra location, not REPLACE the original.
    So:
    1. Which of the two locations will iTunes choose when I add music? Surely it will go with the original pathway laid down in the directory when iTunes was installed, and ignore my external Hard Drive? I mean, how can there be two automatic locations?!!!
    2.. I don't mind itunes library being on my laptop as this is just a list, but it obvoiusly has to have a pathway to the site where the actual AAC files are stored.
         so surely it won't work unless the whole lot is on the external hard drive: library, extras, genius, the lot?
    4. How then do I get it all on the external since merely changing "preferences" doesn't do the job?
    5. Is this perhaps the reason why so many people report that iTunes does not recognize their external hard disk:
    http://www.ehow.com/info_12199596_external-hard-drive-not-recognized-itun es.html
    I just don't want this to happen to me. Any answers?

    UNITED KINGDOM

    As I've replied to your other threads...
    Easy method 1:
    Move or Copy entire working library from current location to the root of your external drive. Press & hold down shift (option on a Mac) as you click the icon to start iTunes. Click Choose when prompted, then browse to ..\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl on the external. If you copied the library across then test your new library works properly after renaming the original folder, before deleting the original folder to recover space.
    Easy method 2:
    If you haven't really started to build your library. Press & hold down shift as you click the icon to start iTunes. Click Create. Browse to the root of the external drive. Create the library as ITunes. Drag your media into ..\iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes.
    Complex method:
    Required if you've already tried other things and now have media & library scattered around. See the post make a split library portable.
    in addition...
    In all cases the idea is to get a library folder called iTunes containing a media folder called iTunes Media with all media inside this media folder. Once you have the library in this shape it is easy to reconnect to the library with the shift-start-iTunes method if the drive letter changes, move the library to another computer, and backup the library by cloning the folder to another drive.

  • 'El Capitan' Beta and SAV 9.2.7

    Hey Everyone,
    In the last couple weeks I've seen a few folks post about issues with the new beta release of OSX 'El Capitan' which was released a few weeks ago. Just wanted to let you know:
    A new install of SAV 9.2.7 on El Capitan is currently expected to fail
    If SAV is installed and working prior to an upgrade to El Capitan, it "should" continue to work
    That said, we have seen a few folks experience issues post upgrade, so please remember, proceed with caution when installing a Beta OS, as we can't guarantee stability.
    As for the future, our Mac development team is currently working on building and testing a new release of SAV which will be fully compatible and available prior to the official release of El Capitan later this fall.
    Thanks everyone for your continued support and patience. In the spirit of ongoing improvements, here's a song for your enjoyment. Happy Friday!

    If it's OK to pass this along, while the El Capitan beta won't normally allow SAV to run, and updates will fail if it's already present and working in an earlier version of OS X before the upgrade, in my experience the current version of SAV will run and update reliably if "System Integrety Protection" is turned off while booted into the El Capitan Recovery drive. See this article in MacWorld for an explanation of what that is and how to turn it off. Note that if System Integrety Protection was on when SAV was broken, simply turning it off won't bring SAV back to life. SAV needs to be reinstalled after System Integrety Protection is disabled, but as long as System Integrety Protection continues disabled, SAV so far has continued to work. While I don't recommend running the Mac that way, if it's the user's production drive (not a good idea with a beta OS), then it's a solution I'd use. Personnally, I consider Sophos AV important enough that I plan to upgrade from Mountain Lion to Yosemite rather than El Capitan for production purposes simply to have Sophos available and running. BTW, System Integrety Protection interferes with fully successful cloning too, which is another reason to hold off with production systems.

  • APEX 3.1.2 Static File Upload Issues

    We are still running on APEX 3.1.2 though we hope to go to 4 very soon.
    We had a production problem this past week that is perplexing. I have seen other posts referencing similar issues but no solutions.
    We have an application that has several Static File Javascripts (.js). We already ran into the IE Upload bug so we only upload in Mozilla now.
    We had changes to one of the .js files (identity.js). I deleted the old file using the Shared Components screen and uploaded the new one. The action was "Successful" but the file was still the old version. We deleted a file of 73 lines of code and uploaded a new version of 28 lines. After successful upload, we still would get the 73 line version . The app was still getting that version too.
    I deleted it many times and tried again. I ran scripts to do both the delete and upload. I even deleted the file manually from the FLOWS_FILES table that held it. Still got the old version.
    We bounced the server (thinking it was cached somewhere) - still got the old version. Finally, in desperation, I started cloning the app to another app number in another Workspace. Since we use aliases, I thought I could use a clean Workspace and uplad the new file there. This worked but - suddenly the old Workspace started using the correct file.
    Is ther some secret cache somewhere that needs to be cleared out? I did not want to start randomly clearing out caches and there is no documentation on this issue.
    Is it something about our config - we have Oracle HTTP Server, OC4J, and modplsql for this environment with a 10g database.
    Any insight would be appreciated - my manager does not like "it fixed itself magically".

    We ruled out the browser caching by trying the app on several other people's PCs.
    I am thinking it is being cached somewhere in the APEX server environment but cannot find any documentation on where or what that might be.
    I think I might have triggered a refresh when I was trying to implement a cloned version (in a different Workspace). It seems that the scope of a JS file is within its Workspace so we figured that a new Workspace would treat the changed file as a new file - and it did. During this process, we had duplicate ALIAS for a minute and I think that confused the APEX App Engine and triggered the refresh.
    But that is a SWAG opinion.
    I also thought of "versioning" the JS files but our developers are not too keen. If we don't find another solution, that may be what we have to do.

  • Boot Camp causes Kernel Panics on Startup

    Hi all,
    I just purchased a new MBP. I had installed everything and transferred all of my files from my previous notebook (via Time Machine). System was working very well.
    I wanted to install a windows partition via boot camp. used Boot Camp Assistant to create a 50GB partition (leaving >200GB of free space on my main partition) for windows 7. Installed this perfectly fine.
    Started up OS X again, and was using that for the rest of the day. Played a game in Boot Camp for an hour or so just now. Now, every time I try to boot to my OS X (10.6.4) partition, it kernel panics. Grey curtain of death.
    I booted into the backup disc, and repaired the drive using Disk Utility. This found some errors and supposedly fixed them. Permission repair went likewise. Still no luck booting into OS X (but I can use the Windows 7 Ultimate x64 partition just fine).
    While trying to resolve this issue, I tried to reinstall OS X over the partition that would not boot up. Erased ONLY that partition and tried to install. Install appeared to work fine, but when not booting from the CD (after the installation finished) it panicked again.
    The only way to resolve the issue was to completely repartition the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Has anyone else had this problem, and resolved it? I would really like to be able to use boot camp...

    I would recommend cloning your system to another drive in addition or instead of using TimeMachine so you have a bootable backup. Also for booting from to run repairs, and if/when you turn to 3rd party disk repair programs like Disk Warrior.
    I suspect it has more to do with 10.6.4.
    Did you install the Apple SETUP drivers and such in Windows 7? the Boot Camp 3.0.x and 3.1? your OEM DVD has those, and likely has more current than what was provided last year even.
    Panics are often external USB cables, devices, RAM, but hardware, and sometimes from drivers. But I doubt it has to do with Windows 7.

  • Advice on recovery from hard disk error 301

    Hi all,
    I have a HP desktop PC, Pavilion HPE h8-1170d which is about 2.5 years+ old. The specifications are:
    Intel Core i5 2500 with 8G RAM, 1TB SATA hard disk. I have recently installed a Radeon HD6670 graphics card as the original card gave problems. I have also upgraded to a Cooler Master 500W power supply.
    Other details of my PC are listed here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02991104&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_u...
    Recently, I experienced failure associated with the harddisk, indicating error 301. I managed to recover sufficiently (somehow) by using Microsoft's error checking tool for harddisk and now able to boot up and run. But I know I will have to replace it as it is a matter of time before the harddisk completely dies.
    Before I go and buy a replacement harddisk, I hope I could know about the following:
    1. I am not sure which version of SATA is my PC using. Can I just specify that I want a SATA harddisk, and not be concerned about their version of SATA ?
    2. What is the best way to replace the harddisk from the software perspective ? Should I do an image copy from my current harddisk, if so, what is the easiest way to do this ? sorry, I have not done this before so need to ask such basic question. Would it make sense to connect the new harddisk first and then do the image ?
    Thank you very much for any help !
    smtan
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi smtan,
    A SATA III, 6 GB data transfer rate disk will work.
    Your PC model was introduced by HP in 2011. It may have SATA II but a SATA III disk will be backwards compatible. If this is true you will be limited to 3 GB transfer rates.
    One other consideration is HDD size. You should probably limit the HDD replacement size to 2 TB. Your PC probably has a legacy BIOS and your HP Recovery discs may not work on a HDD exceeding 2 TB.
    You have a couple of choices on moving or installing Win 7 on your new HDD.
    You can clone the existing install from the original HDD to the replacement HDD. You will need to use either: free disk imaging software or purchase this software. I have heard good things about Macrium Reflect free and EaseUS free.
    You can GOOGLE for other choices.
    Install the disk imaging/cloning software on the source HDD. Install the new HDD in your PC.
    Run the cloning software and follow instructions on cloning the operating system to the new HDD.
    Please see this article for instructions on cloning one HDD to another.
    This article may interest you. Consider purchasing an SSD replacement drive. The performance increase is unbelievable. Many SSD manufacturers provide cloning software with the purchase. You also need to buy the desktop kit version. This includes a 3.5 inch adapter for installing the 2.5 inch SSD in the HDD cage.
    There is a downside if you go SSD. Your HP recovery discs may not work because the replacement SSD will be less than 1 TB. There are ways around this. Please see this forum post on installing Win 7 without a disc. Let me know if you are interested.

  • Clockwiser

    Hi all,
    I have a clockface of images with a button, which when clicked should rotate the images clockwise around the clockface.
    There are 3 images per 'hour'.
    The images are placed via co-ords stored as x & y arrays.
    The button needs to advance the selected co-ord by 3 array places.
    Currently the only outcome I can achieve is to rotate the images until they reach the array length limit - at which point my 'image1.gif' is cloned and takes over another space per button press.
    I think the problem lies in the second if statement - but I can't find the solution.
    Can anybody else?
    Many thanks.
    public void doClockwise()
            int current = 3;
            int [] temp = new int[indexArray2.length];
            for(int x=1; x<indexArray2.length; x++)
                if(current < indexArray2.length)
                    temp[current] = indexArray2[x];
                    current++;
                if(current > indexArray2.length)
            indexArray2 = temp;
            repaint();
        }

    I'm not sure what you're asking, actually, but if you wanted the next coordinates for the 3 images....
    int current = 0;
    int[] allCoordinates = new int[6]; // 3 x/y pairs (x1, y1, x2, y2, x3, y3 )
    .. fill the coords ...
    public void int[] getNextCoordinates() {
       int[] coords = { allCoordinates[current], allCoordinates[current+1] };
       current+=2;
       if(current >= allCoordinates.length) {
          current = 0;
       return coords;
    }
