Cloning a Microsoft Cluster

Hi Experts
We are planning our Disaster Recovery Plan,  we have some SAP applications which are difficult of install and configure,
so we are thinking that our best option is cloning the entire server to the secondary site, we have a tool named double take which can replicate from server to server.
next is the schemma:
we have a Cluster in Windows server 2008 R2  with two nodes,
it has installed SQL SERVER 2008 R2 on cluster and SAP.
we want to clon this cluster to the secondary site and start a replication with the mentioned tool,
we want to maintain the actual name of servers but we will change the IP of servers,
my principal questionis if we can clon the cluster and if exist a document or something where we could follow best practices..
thanks ind advance

No - you cannot create a clone.  At least, not if you want it to be supported.  There are all sorts of security ids generated in each instance of Windows Server and thing don't work well with the same SIDs on more than one system.  Microsoft
does not support cloned systems.
However, it is possible to build a geographically dispersed cluster where some nodes are in the data center and the other nodes are in the DR site.  This is dependent upon capabilities provided by the storage vendor, so you need to talk with your storage
vendor about how to configure it.

  • STMS error message on the Microsoft cluster.

    Hi,
I have successfully installed NW2004s on a Microsoft cluster. When I run STMS for the very first time on client 000, I am getting message saying "tp configruation not completely distributed".
    Any ideas.

    Hi,
I will tell you the exact solution.
Login to your application server using sapgui. run the transaction SE06.
There you get an option perform post installation Actions. Click on it.
Then go to transaction stms and it will say you that you are logged in to your domain controller.
Further go to trnsaction rz10 and import profiles for all the active servers.
    reward with good points.

  • New Microsoft Cluster.

Years ago i did many SAP in the Microsoft Cluster Environment. I have to say that I like it, some problems can occour but the system was reliable.
At this moment we're planning new environments for the HCM servers. The Microsoft Cluster has been choosen as the main HA system. Well, I have read some documentation and many thinks are changed. The first in the new idea of the SPOFs ( single point of failures ) are the only that will be clusterized and the application servers will be installed in the local machines.
I need some clarification. We're not planning to have Application servers. Only one instance will be enough. Can I clusterize the dialog instance  to avoid the local installation as I did in the past ? There is something i'm missunderstanding.
    Best regards.

    Hello,
The multiple SAP installation in the same cluster is fully supported by SAP.  You can find the guide:
Installation of Multiple SAP Systems in MSCS. MSSQL Server in:
    https://service.sap.com/installnw70
    Link:
Installation Guide - SAP NetWeaver 7.0 including EHP 1,
And dowload the guide under Multi-SID Installation on Windows MSCS.
I think that i will test it under lab conditions using vmware trying to understand the process. My main problem is that this are going to be installed by external consultants and I need to know all the process in order to avoid potential problems in the project start.
    Best regards.

  • Is OWB certified with MSCS (Microsoft Cluster Server) ?

    Hi Everybody,
Is OWB certified with MSCS (Microsoft Cluster Server) ?
    Best Regards,
    Ashraf Hussein

    Hi Ashraf
    Not much help but ....
So is your question more related to does the Oracle database work in Microsoft Cluster Server? I found some details on Oracle Fail Safe for operating Oracle databases in a MS cluster:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/windows/failsafe/index.html
Much of the information on these pages looks fairly dated. The focus has been on Oracle RAC for clustered configurations.

  • Cloned two vm cluster nodes from development cluster to act as template to create production cluster

    Morning,
There was so much done to setup the development cluster, I thought it would be easy to have the two nodes in the cluster cloned.  To my surprise, the development cluster was up and happily running on the new vm servers.  Stopping resources verifies
it is stopping and starting resources on the original cluster.  I am not sure how to safely have the two new servers not manage the development cluster and create a new production cluster on them.
I am hesitant to destroy the cluster as I suspect it will destroy the real development cluster.  How do I do this?  How do I delete the windows cluster software and re-install without affecting the development cluster?
Note that I tried to create a new cluster in the failover cluster manager and specify the new vm cluster servers, but it says they are part of a cluster already.  I do not see them listed as nodes.  I am not sure how to see what cluster it thinks
the new servers are part of or how to not make them part of the development cluster.  That might be the path to my solution.

This actually has worked out okay.  I found these steps and did them on both of the nodes that were claiming to be in a cluster already:
    powershell
    Import-Module FailoverClusters;
    clear-clusternode

  • BPC for Microsoft Cluster Architecture

    Hello Everybody,
please could you share any slide concerning BPC fo M Cluster Architecture ?
I've found on SAP repository but nothing seem interestering.
Thanks in advance for your kind collaboration !
    Regards,
         Fabrizio

From functionalities point of view are justfew slight sifferences between M and NW version of SAP BPC.
Just into background is the difference that M version is using just Microsoft technologies:
.NET Application Server developed into .NET technologies
OLAP database using SSAS from Microsoft
Relational Database using SQL Server database
and NW version is using standard SAP technologies:
    ABAP application server
OLAP datbase - part of BW
Relational Database - any database supported by NW
Regarding the performances between the two versions I will say it is depending by number of users and volume of data but in general are not big differences. If the design of application is done correct following the Best Practices documentantion I think the performances are more anlless the same.
In any case I don't see any reason to have both version of SAP BPC M and NW version.
You have to decide the right version function by IT requirements and future developments using NW or Microsoft technologies.
But it doesn't make sense to have BPC M and BPC NW for the same customer.
I hope this will help you.

    Sorin Radulescu

  • Microsoft Cluster in UCS

Anybody know of any good documentation on how to setup a MCSC between two Blades in a UCS chassis?

The multicast issue is really only applicable to NLB, not a MCSC.
From MS Failover Clustering in Windows Server 2008 R2:Multicast functionality has been discontinued in Windows Server 2008 failover clustering, and cluster communications now use User Datagram Protocol (UDP) unicast. (Port 3343 is still the common port that is used by Microsoft failover clusters.) There are now new messaging processes that are internal to the Cluster service itself. When nodes transmit and receive heartbeats to confirm that each node is still available, the nodes use Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) rather than the less reliable UDP.
In my experience classic shared storage failover clusters have been just like rackmount servers. I setup a separate vNIC and VLAN for the heartbeat cluster private network, but that's about all I did that was UCS specific.

  • Do we need to install microsoft cluster software for RAC 10G

    Hi all,
Our company wants to install ORACLE 10G RAC on windows 2003 R2. Based on the pre-requisites I asked network guys to provide me the shared disk storage from SAN, but they insist that this storage will not be accessible until we have windows clustering software running on top of the two nodes. I want to use oracle clusterware for clustering.
Please let me know how does it work. Do i need to have windows cluster s/w first then install oracle clusterware on these nodes.
    Help is as always appreciated
    Regards
    Aijaz

    Hi Aijaz,
You don't need any clusterware beyond Oracle clustware, but if is a requirement to your company you can use another Clusterware to install RAC, if they are supported, check on metalink. The Clusterware from Oracle provide all you need to deploy a Real Application Cluster production environment.
With additional documentation, take a look on http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b14207/intro.htm#sthref21 for explain more about Oracle Clusteware
Here an excelent guide to install RAC 10g R2 on windows provided by Philip Newlan on http://www.jobcestbon.com/oracle/RacOnWindows.pdf

    Rodrigo Mufalani
Ps.: Thank you Philip, this paper is the best that I read based RAC on Windows!!!

  • Conversion to Microsoft cluster

Our Prd system is running R/3 4.7 ext 1.10 on Win3k/SQL2000. We would like to convert the Prd system to a MS Cluster enviroment by adding another new hardware. My planned steps are:
    a. Detach/backup the database from the Prd
    b. Setup the cluster  - uninstall SAP in node a (old server) and node b ( new server ), hardware SAN, network prep, etc.
    b. Reinstall a new SAP installation with the SAPinst cluster options in node a & b
    c. Attach/restore PRd db to the cluster.
This is my understanding from the SAP inst guide and notes.
Is there any other method in step (b) where is could "convert" or "migrate" the SAP instance/MSSQL data without reinstalling ?

For SAP instance you have to use options:
    >b. Setup the cluster - uninstall SAP in node a (old server) and node b ( new server ), >hardware SAN, network prep, etc.
    >b. Reinstall a new SAP installation with the SAPinst cluster options in node a & b
as there is not any direct way to convert existing SAP instance into MSCS - installation has to create services on both nodes, common file system, set the appropriate environments etc.
The same is for DB. You have to put DB (also master) on shared drives and you can achieve this only during the new installation and detach/attach routine for SAP DB.
