Cloning a PowerMac G4 with OS 10.3

Hey all,
For my work, we use microscope software that only works with OS 10.3 (why, I don't know). My boss is buying a second computer (and microscope) which he wants me to make exact copy of our current computer (so we can have two users working at once). He asked me to do it, as I'm the resident Mac expert... yeah.
10.3 doesn't have migration assistant, so my thought was using disk utility restore, using the current computer as the source and the new computer as the destination.
This should create a functional clone of the original computer, right? The "clone" will start up properly and everything, right?
Thanks!
-Matt

First, is the 'new' computer compatible with 10.3? Panther will not run on any Intel models. It will also not run on any PPC models made after Panther was replaced with Tiger (10.4.) So the 'new' computer must be capable of running the version of 10.3 you have installed on the existing computer.
Second, you can clone between the two machines provided both have a Firewire port. Connect both machines via Firewire cable. Boot the new computer into Target Disk Mode. Boot the old computer normally. After it boots you should see a drive icon on the Desktop for the drive in the new computer. Now follow these instructions:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new computer's drive.
Source means the old computer's internal startup drive.

  • Connecting a MacBook to  PowerMac G5 with a firewire cable

I have a 13" MacBook. I want to transfer files from my PowerMac G5 running OS X 10.4.11 to it. I can hook an external drive to the MacBook via firewire and it recognizes it. I can hook up the PowerMac and the MacBook via firewire, start the MacBook with the T key depressed and see the hard drive on my PowerMac. But... I can't do the reverse. I can start up the MacBook with the T key depressed and see the G5's hard drive on it.
    Any suggestions?

Are you using the same cable to connect the machines?
Some folks suggest to shut both machines down, then connect the Firewire cable. Boot the Power Mac into Target Disc mode. Once you see the FireWire symbol on the PowerMac's screen, try booting the MacBook.
Once the MacBook has started & you're logged in, check for the hard drive in Finder. If it doesn't appear, open System Profiler (Applications>Utilities), and click Firewire in the left-hand column. Are any devices showing here?

  • What's the best way to use a cloned Snow Leopard drive with an iBook?

My aging and ailing MacBook Pro is going in for Apple Care.
I've made a clone of its hard drive and would like to keep working this week using an iBook G4.  Alas, an external drive with Snow Leopard will not boot from an iBook.  I did format the drive as an Apple Partition Map, so I can see it from the iBook and work with its files--but it will not start up from it.
I forsee screw-ups as I work with some programs and files on the iBook and others off the hard drive.  Eudora, e.g., requires its In Box and Out Boxes to reside on the boot drive; many of my favorite programs take their settings from the start up computer, not the external drive.  That means there will be all sorts of settings-- e.g., Word,  Excel's, iKey's --that will need setting on the iBook or copying over to it.
Alternatively, I could downgrade the external drive to Leopard or even Tiger so I can boot from it and work with the files that way.   I think that will require having to reformat the external drive--which means no direct  cloning of the MBP drive to it!  It also would preclude an easy 1-step restore (I'd have to clone it back to the MBP and then upgrade to SL).
Unsure which way makes the most sense-- or if there's another way I haven't thought of.  I do have additional hard drives to play with (e.g., I made another SL clone of the entire MBP drive).
    Any ideas, suggestions welcome!

Appreciate that extra tidbit, although that's not exactly true, is it?  I mean, I had a cloned Leopard MBP and a cloned Tiger hard drive that do boot from the iBook!
If we could distinguish and separate the hardware drivers, download them from Apple etc., then it could be said we can use a clone on another model of Mac provided: A, B and C are met.
But since Apple has changed from OS 9 to OS X, PowerPC 32 bit to 64 bit, PowerPC to to Intel 32 bit, Intel 32 bit to 64 bit, locks the drivers to certain install disk versions and changes hardware around constantly, including changing the OS and making it not run on earlier versions of hardware, sideways stuff like A4/A5 processors, causing such a cluster mess of confusion and obscuration that it's better to say NOT than trying to find the tiny possibilities that it can happen.
If it does happen, lucky you, likely won't happen for any duration worth relying upon.

  • Running iMovie 08 on a PowerMac G5 with two video cards?

I have two video cards installed on my PowerMac G5. The primary card is the Radeon 9600 XT (AGP). I also added a relatively inexpensive Radeon 9200 (PCI) to run a second monitor.
Under iMovie HD, this setup works well, although it does warn me that one of the video cards is unsupported. (As long as the iMovie windows are on the primary monitor). Final Cut Pro Studio 2 also has no difficulties with this setup.
iMovie 08, while it installs, starts up with a window saying that Quartz Extreme is required and only allows me to quit. The 9600 XT does support Quartz Extreme, while the 9200 does not.
While I do not use iMovie for my own video editing (I do have Final Cut Pro), I need to be able to open and see student projects created in iMovie. It seems odd that iMovie could have stiffer video card requirements than Final Cut Pro (or Motion 3).

Hello! You are correct "iMovie requires a Mac with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster)". You can't upgrade the G4 to run iMovie 08. Tom

  • Powermac G5 with HD TV and DVI formac monitor

    Hello
I recently bought a hd tv which I would like to run together with my DVI monitor. I was looking at getting an adc to dvi adaptor but thought it may slow down performance. Then I thought about having two graphics cards. would this be possible? If I had a second better quality graphics card would my processor perform better? I am new to video cards as I am a sound person. Any information would be great.
    powermac 1.8 Dual g5 4 gb ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Run the games first then see if you need to bother. Memory is merely one part of the equation. ONLY mac cards work in macs. If you have looked on ebay and can only find Windows cards bone up on your search techniques as there are literally hundreds of them.
Mac video card would be an idea as a search term.
You have a video card now in an AGP slot. Which is only for a video card. If you buy a replacement card obviously you replace the AGP card you have with a newer AGP card. But there may be no need and until you try you are wasting your time and maybe a lot of money.

  • Powermac g5 with HD LCD display

Hello, I am thinking about buying a hd lcd around 30" to connect with my powermacs dvi output. I have read this works but am unclear if the display will be as good quality as a normal DVI montior. I currently own a 19" formac radeon which is fine but I'd like something bigger as my powermac is also my entertainment machine as well as running apllication like pro tools and other audio software.
Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing? The main thing that concerns me are will it slow down my powermac? Will the diplay be as clear as a normal monitor and will there be any latency?
    Please let me know.
    Powermac G5 1.8 Dual 4 GB ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi, i am currently on a power mac, my screen size is 32" and it is a LCD HD. I used vga as the quality is quite good and it is simple to set up. I bought a vga to vga cable from ebay for £2. I have had no problems with this set up. I have a toshiba tv but i know it will work with any. I would reccommend getting a nice big tv because the bigger the better (and tv's are pretty cheap now-a-days). I have never used dvi but im sure it will be pretty similar to vga.
    hope that helps.
p.s. it does not slow down your power mac, the display is as clear as crystal and i don't know what latency means but im sure that it doesnt have it.

  • PowerMac G5 with Kensington SSD - Don't always start ?

    Hello,
I have a powermac G5 that ran just great and wanted to give it a bit more speed.  So I got a Kensington SSD hard drive and installed it on with MacOS X.  Problem now is when I go from a cold start (having to press power on on the front of the tower) it sometimes turns on and sometime does not.  When it does though, it really rocks.
What is the issue and what do I need to do resolve this.  To be honest, I do not know what I do to get it started.  I just press the start button repeatedly and sometimes kill the main power on the power bar.
    Thanks

  • Controlling Powermac G4 with powerbook G4 keyboard- oT?

This may be off topic. My questions is this. I have a Powermac G4- dual 867. It has music DSP cards installed(UAD-1 etc). I travel frequently on short road trips and I want to be able to do some writing and mixing while on the road. Several of my projects where created on desktop using DSP card plug-ins which don't exist on my laptop (12in G4). Tha makes for some crashes and inoperability on the powerbook. Sometimes, projects just open without being able to find the DSP plugs- no problem.
I'd like to carry the G4 tower with me but operate the Desktop G4 from the laptop keyboard. Is that possible ? To use the 12" Powerbook g4 as a keyboard only ? Or even better to use the screen and keyboard to boot-in to the Desktop.
That would allow me to run all of my projects from the G4 without having to carry a monitor and keyboard only the tower.
    Thanks

Yes, this is possible as long as you will have an Ethernet cable to go between the PB and the desktop. You can remote control the desktop via your laptop using Apple Remote Desktop, or VNC. The former costs money, but the latter is free and already built-in to 10.3 or later (works in 10.2.8 or higher, but you may need to install this if it's not there already).
Go to System Preferences > Sharing > Services and enable Apple Remote Desktop. Then open Access Privileges and check the box that says "VNC viewers may control screen with password" and enter a password. Now your computer can be controlled remotely with a VNC application such as Chicken of the VNC.
As long as you have an Ethernet cable between the two machines, you will be fine. However, you will need to assign IP addresses to both hosts. You could easily set up a new location for both Macs. If you don't really understand networking, just use 192.168.1.1 for one host and 192.168.1.2 for the other. Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and the rest can be left blank. This should get you going.
    * Note * The IP addresses above assume that you are using a single Ethernet cable between the two hosts. If you are hooking into a network, it's best to use DHCP if available or find out what the IP address space being used is. You wouldn't want to use those addresses if they were being used by another host.
I have used this method to control Macs remotely, and it works. Sometimes it seems slow, so try it to see if it meets your needs. There is also another VNC server that you could try to use, aptly named OSXvnc. I haven't tried it though.
    Good luck!

As I said before, the method you use to "clone" a system is not supported. You will need to maually rename the database, the files etc.

  • SCSI Scanner on PowerMac G5 with Leopard

    Hi all,
I have an old high-end SCSI scanner (AgfaScan XY-15) that I would like to use with my PowerMac G5 and OSX 10.5.8. In the past, I used a G4 MDD that could dual-boot OS 9 and OS X 10.3. The G4 had an Adapted card (29160 IIRC), the G5 an Atto (UL5D).
To have the scanner work with OS X 10.3, I had to replace IOSCSIArchitectureModelFamily.kext and IOSCSIParallelFamily.kext (in /System/Library/Extensions) by their OS X 10.2 versions (something Agfa recommended for their mid-range scanner, on a page that can now only be found in archives : http://web.archive.org/web/20050306100359/http://www.agfa.com/digicam_scanner_dr ivers/faq/#faq22a)
On Leopard, I can see the scanner in the ATTO configuration tool, but the scanner sofware always outputs a "scanner not found" error. This scanner cannot be used with VueScan, so the solution suggested on Using SCSI Scanner with 10.5 possible? is not applicable.
I have tried changing parameters (for instance disabling LUNs for ID 4 - the scanner - as shown below, which results in the scanner only appearing once in the list of devices), but I cannot seem to find the good combination of parameters.
Does someone with experience in SCSI scanners have some tips?
Thanks in advance for the help!

The last device on the chain must have termination turned on.      If it is, then I don't know what to say other than to try some of the other scanner drivers on my subscription site*:

  • 11i eBiz RAC 9i database cloning to a envronment with existing 10g CRS

production is 9.2.0.8 RAC Need to clone production to lower instance using Rapid Clone. Has done such clone before.
The new issue is there is an another 10g RAC database with 10g Clusterware has been installed in this server and the cloned 9i RAC need to co-exist with this 10g RAC database.
I am thinking to use 10g clusterware to manager 9i RAC database.
From cloning point of view, how to clone a 9i RAC database to an environment with 10g clusterare.
Should I use 9i oracle home 9.2.0/appsutil/clone/bin/adcfgclone.pl or should I use 10g oracle home adcfgclone.pl?

    Hi,
production is 9.2.0.8 RAC Need to clone production to lower instance using Rapid Clone. Has done such clone before.I did not try this type of clone before. However, I believe you cannot use 10g ORACLE_HOME as cloning 11i instance with Rapid Clone on 10g database requires additional manual steps which cannot be applied to the 9i ORACLE_HOME. From Rapid Clone point of view, I believe you need to issue adcfgclone.pl from the 9i ORACLE_HOME

  • Cloning Non EBS Database with Rapid Clone.

    Hi DBAs,
It might sound weird but I was curious that - Can you clone the regular oracle database (Non EBS) using rapid clone. Lets suppose if I copy over appsutil directory from a EBS database and manually edit the context file with current instance information. Also if I need to do some changes in shell/perl scripts of rapid clone etc.
Have any one done it in past by doing some magic and tricks or Is there automated script based cloning available for regular databases?
    Thanks
    -Naveed-

    Hi Naveed,
I believe it is not possible as Rapid Clone is an Oracle Apps utility, so Oracle does not support cloning non-Apps databases using Rapid Clone.
In addition, there is no context file or AutoConfig in such a database, which is required for Rapid Clone to work properly.
Is there automated script based cloning available for regular databases? For this cloning, you can use the manual method, export/import, or RMAN.
