Cloning a RAC environment using ASM to a single node.

Hi partners,
I would like to know if, there is any procedure to clone a RAC environment with Ebusiness Suite using ASM, OMF and raw devices to a single node database?
I know, it can reached using Rapid Clone, but I would like to know, what are the needed steps to clone the database which is using ASM and raw devices, I am thinking to recrate manually the controlfiles.
Also, I think that I will need to clone firstable the ASM instance, and then try to clone the database.
I have looking at Metalink, but I haven't found any Note about that.
Any advice or help will be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Francisco Mtz.

    Hi,
Can there be multiple ASM instances on single node?
This one says No : http://www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/02-2008/msg00317.html
And This one says Yes : http://www.databasejournal.com/features/oracle/article.php/3571371
    Thanks in advance.

...that document doesnt say you cannot have multiple ASM instances on a node. It says "...ASM, +you only need one ASM+ instance for that computer, to manage the two database instances that use ASM."
The fact that you only need one - and I cannot think of a good reason to have more than one - does not preclude the fact that you do seem to be able to have multiple ASM instances on a single node, each looking after its own set of disks and diskgroups.
Again - I cannot think of a good reason to do so though!

  • RAC 10gr2 using ASM for RMAN a cluster file system or a Local directory

The environment is composed of a RAC with 2 nodes using ASM. I have to determine what design is better for Backup and Recovery with RMAN. The backups are going to be saved to disk only. The database is only transactional and small in size
I am not sure how to create a cluster file system or if it is better to use a local directory. What's the benefit of having a recovery catalog that is optional to the database?
I very much appreciate your advice and recommendation, Terry

    Arf,
I am new to RAC. I analyzed Alejandro's script. He is main connection is to the first instance; then through sql*plus, he gets connected to the second instance. he exits the second instance and starts with RMAN backup to the database . Therefore the backup to the database is done from the first instance.
I do not see where he setenv again to change to the second instance to run RMAN to backup the second instance. It looks to me that the backup is only done to the first instance, but not to the second instance. I may be wrong, but I do not see the second instance backup.
Kindly, I request your assistance on the steps/connection to backup the second instance. Thank you so much!! Terry

  • Multiple ASM Instances on single node

    Hi All,
After going through some threads it seems to me that multiple ASM instances on a node is not supported and recommended by ORACLE but i coudn't find any ORACLE document or support matrix mentioning this. Can any one give me a pointer to this. Please correct me if i am wrong and Multiple ASM instances are fully supported by ORACLE.
    Thanks,

Multiple ASM instances on a single node are supported but not recommended due to several issues you could encounter during that kind of configuration.
Possible interraction between those instances for identification of each disk area usage, each disk area permissions , database instance to asm instance mapping and so on, could result in unwanted behaviour, as ASM is in some way just oracle's representation of LVM.
Intention is that any kind of distinction/separation of oracle related data under the ASM should be done through the disk groups.
So it seems it would be better to apply this kind of logic rather than doing suspiciously magical and rare configurations that could bring you similiary strange and unexpected problems.

  • Using ASM in a cluster, and new snapshot feature

    Hi,
I'm currently studying ASM and trying to find some answers.
From what I understand and experienced so far, ASM can only be used as a local storage solution. In other words it cannot be used by network access. Is this correct?
How is the RDBMS database connecting to the ASM instance? Which process or what type of connection is it using? It's apparently not using listener, although the instance name is part of the database file path. How does this work please?
How does ASM work in a cluster environment? How does each node in a cluster connect to it?
As of 11g release 2, ASM provides a snapshot feature. I assume this can be used for the purpose of backup, but then each database should use it's own diskgroup, and I will still need to use alter database begin backup, correct?
    Thanks!

From what I understand and experienced so far, ASM can only be used as a local storage solution. In other words it cannot be used by network access. Is this correct?Well, you are missing one point that it would entirely depend on the architecture that you are going to use. If you are going to use ASM for a single node, it would be available right there. If installed for a RAC system, ASM instance would be running on each node of the cluster and would be managing the storage which would be lying on the shared storage. The process ASMB would be responsible to exchange messages, take response and push the information back to the RDBMS instance.
How is the RDBMS database connecting to the ASM instance? Which process or what type of connection is it using? It's apparently not using listener, although the instance name is part of the database file path. How does this work please?Listener is not need Markus as its required to create the server processes which is NOT the job of the ASM instance. ASM instance would be connecting the client database with itself immediately when the first request would come from that database to do any operation over the disk group. As I mentioned above, ASMB would be working afterwards to carry forward the request/response tasks.
How does ASM work in a cluster environment? How does each node in a cluster connect to it? Each node would be having its own ASM instance running locally to it. In the case of RAC, ASM sid would be +ASMn where n would be 1, 2,... , going forward to the number of nodes being a part of teh cluster.
As of 11g release 2, ASM provides a snapshot feature. I assume this can be used for the purpose of backup, but then each database should use it's own diskgroup, and I will still need to use alter database begin backup, correct? You are probably talking about the ACFS Snapshot feature of 11.2 ASM. This is not to take the backup of the disk group but its like a o/s level backup of the mount point which is created over the ASM's ACFS mount point. Oracle has given this feature so that you can take the backup of your oracle home running on the ACFS mount point and in the case of any o/s level failure like someone has deleted certain folder from that mountpoint, you can get it back through the ACFS snapshot taken. For the disk group, the only backup available is metadata backup(and restore) but that also does NOT get the data of the database back for you. For the database level backup, you would stillneed to use RMAN only.

  • Single node asm

I am using asm on a single node 10gr3. When I try to create the second database, I get a message saying, oracle unable to start the asm, do you want start. I looked at it and I have the asm and the existing db up and running. Why am I getting the error message when I have the ASM up and how to proceed?
    Thanks.

How did you create your original ASM instance? using DBCA? - Yes. I used dbca to create asm and db
Can you check if the ASM entry is present in ORATAB? - Yes.+ASM:/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/asm:N
    +ASM:/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1:N
    fdev01:/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1:N
You on Linux? - Yes RH4
Do you have enough resources for two instances and ASM on the one box? - 16gb memory and 2 core
Did you restart CSS? See Note:429214.1 I guess I am hitting this!
    css.log output -

Should I just follow the below?
Please find below steps for resolving the issue. (Non -RAC cases only)
I don't see any files as mentioned below. Should the current asm and db be down? what does localconfig do?
1)Remove the following IPC socket files
    # rm -f /usr/tmp/.oracle/*
    # rm -f /tmp/.oracle/*
    # rm -f /var/tmp/.oracle/*
(The location will vary across platforms. Files would be present in one of the above location)
    2)Run the root.sh script again
    3)Run the localconfig script
    # $ORACLE_HOME/bin/localconfig delete
    # $ORACLE_HOME/bin/localconfig add

  • Install RAC OBS on single node using VMWare

Re: How to install Muti_node R12 using VMWARE
    Mine is a little different.
I have the Test server which has OEL5 and one OAS 10g(Oracle application Server) with 10g database.
I want to install RAC OBS on this server by installing VMWare for the single node. I do not want to wipe out the OAS, reinstore OSL5 and start from a blank machine.
Can I keep what I have on the server and install RAC OBS by installing VMWare, configuring the virtual sharing disks, and install RAC OBS using ASM?

    Hi,
Can I keep what I have on the server and install RAC OBS by installing VMWare, configuring the virtual sharing disks, and install RAC OBS using ASM?Yes, you can. Just make sure you have sufficient resources on this machine.

    1) I have created single node standard database called mydb in /u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1 home (hostname linux1)
    2) installed crs and asm on linux1 and linux2 and shared storag on ASM(which external HD running ieee1294 cards and ports) . no database is created on linux1 or linux2
    3) I want to convert mydb to RAC DATABASE called mydb1 instance on linux1 and mydb2 on linux2 machine respectively.
    4) copied and modifed xml as you see above called ConvertTomydb.xml to $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory
    5) when I run
    $rconfig ConvertTomydb.xml from $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory , i get the following error

  • Upgradation of Primary (RAC) two node database and single node standby DB

We have our primary setup in Oracle RAC in 10g R2 (10.2.0.1.0) in HP UX 11i 64bit (PA RISC). It is a two node RAC.
And we have a single node standby database (DR).
Both the primary and standby database are existing in 10.2.0.1.0
We need to upgrade the primary and standby database from 10.2.0.1.0 to 10.2.0.4.0
Am planning to go through the DBUA method for upgrading the database.
I like to know is there any special cases for upgrading both the primary and standby database.
since as i mentioned i will upgrade the database through dbua method, and if i upgrade my standby database as same as primary,
will it forcefully open the database, because while we upgrade the database through dbua it will open the database at the end of installation.
Is it possible to upgrade the standby database with DBUA method even when my standby database is in Mount state.
I will be helpfull if anyone has done this earlier, are there any know issues and is there any good document which i can refer.
    with regards
    A.Aravind

    hi,
thanks for your reply, and i was following the document.
I like to know that is it mandatory to create a new Oracle Home for upgrading from 10.2.0.1.0 to 10.2.0.4.0
or i can proceed the installation of software in the same oracle home.
I will list out my action plan, please correct me if am wrong,
    In Primary RAC,
    a) Shutdown the database
    b) Shutdown the asm instance
    c) Stop the nodeapps services
    d) Stop the cluster ready services.
    e) Stop the enterprise manager
    f) Stop the isqlplus
    In Standby single node database,
    1)Cancel the managed Recovery process
    2) shutdown the database
    3) Shutdown the asm instance.
    PATCHING Process
    g) Apply the oracle clusterware patch 10.2.0.4.0 in the same old existing ORA_CRS_HOME
    h) Apply the oracle database software patch 10.2.0.4.0 in the same old existing ORACLE_HOME
Note: In my case both the ORACLE_HOME and ASM_HOME are in the same location.
    i) Execute dbua to update the database in the primary database.
    j) Apply the 10.2.0.4.0 patch in standby database ORACLE_HOME where as ORACLE_HOME and ASM_HOME are in the same location
    k) Copy the recently generated archive logs from primary to standby manually and apply in standby database.
    l) Mount the database in standby
    m) Start the Managed recovery process.

  • Database cloning using ASM disks

    Hi,
I have 2 node RAC DB running on linux using ASM. This is E-business suite application. Disks are EMC now. Want to clone another environment using HP and Netapp disks. Can someone direct me to a link or document showing the cloning of DB using ASM.
    Thanks

  • ASM in a non-RAC environment

    Gurus,
what are the advantages, if any, of running ASM in a non-RAC environment?
    Thanks.

Any raid (that actually provides multiple disks in a
LVM) will nullify the performance gains of raw that
are associated with disk head contention.
Any disk subsystem with front-end RAM cache will
nullify the rest of the performance gains of raw
    disk.
Any 'RAID-5 is good' argument under a database
assumes large and efficient cache.Unfortunately, we can't just discount RAID-5, since it is far too cost-efficient an option these days, with 10, 20, 30+ TB databases. Plus, the storage vendors actually make it efficient enough that it performs almost as well as RAID 1+0.
Multiple disks on the storage subsystem and RAM caches (for reads and writes) are still important and valuable performance enhancements. Remember that your storage subsystem is much more efficient at this than your database or server (since it's designed to do it!). True, it doesn't have knowledge of the database files, their content, and their usage, but you do, and can therefore intelligently configure the subsystem and place the data files.
ASM does nothing more intelligent than stripe the data across all of the available disks. The best part about it is the ability to dynamically grow the groups. The problem with it is that it thwarts the read-ahead cache of the storage subsystem. And, while Oracle will intelligently 'read-ahead', it can't optimize where the heads are on the disk, or take into consideration the 10 other servers accessing the same storage subsystem.
The problem with ASM doing the striping is that, for large databases, you will typically have hundreds of disks underneath the covers. If you gave the OS and then Oracle that many devices, what do you think would happen? It would step all over itself and seriously impair your ability to access the devices in parallel. Whereas, if you group 4 or 8 devices together, the storage subsystem will access them together in parallel for the OS.
So, don't discount your storage box... But yeah, use RAID 1+0 rather than RAID-5 (4,3) when possible!

  • Cssd does not start in non-RAC environment Thus we can not bring up ASM

    Non-RAC environment
    ASM version = 11.1.0.7
    HP-UX Itanium 11.23
After power outage, CSSD does not start on non-RAC environment
Running as root "/sbin/init.d/init.cssd start" does not start cssd
Oracle support tried "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig delete" and "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig add"
but it did not start CSS
Oracle support tried "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig reset $ASM_HOME"
It started the CSSD and the "crsctl check css" came back with CSS is healthy
But around 1 minute later it rebooted the server and when it came up again CSS does not start.
They checked /etc/inittab and it looked fine.
Before the reboot we saw this message in the /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.log:
Cluster Ready Services completed waiting on dependencies
Again it is a NON-RAC environment. We only need CSSD for ASM. We do not have CRS installed on this server.
Our test system has been down for a week and we did not get the resolution from Oracle support yet !
