Cloning a single drive to a new RAID 1 set

Hi,
Can I clone a drive from a machine (that has dual controller, RAID 1 capability but, was not setup using it) to a new pair of hardware RAID 1 disks using method/software in the same machiine, now. I think the machine should have originally used it's hardware
RAID 1 capability but, for whatever reason wasn't and now,  I would like to do that. Can I use Acronis or Ghost to clone the single drive to the new RAID 1 set?
Thanks.
gk

It is possible to create a mirror from an existing JBOD disk, however the ability to do this depends on the capabilities of the RAID controller. In my experience, this is something found on high-end controllers, of which I know exist but have not used.
There is a method using some 3ware cards where you have to take a disk image of the single disk. Then you import it into a mirror but the drive is erased. Then you can redeploy the disk image onto the mirror.
Of course there is a big problem you may encounter. You would only want to do this if the disk was originally on RAID JBOD. If the disk was originally on IDE or AHCI modes, going through this process would likely result in Windows STOP 0x7B on first boot
after being cloned to the mirror.
If the data is important on this disk, I would recommend not trying to put it into a mirror. Instead you can use Ghost (or similar) program to do a sector copy to a new disk. I typically recommend that the new disk be a different size from the old disk so
you can easily determine which is which.

Hi, I have 1 sata wd 160 gb drive on my pc (k8t neo FSR+ am 64+3000+1gig Kingston+RADEON9800PRO ) connected to the VIA VT8237 serial ata ( not promise, I don’t have that)  everything works fine, the problem is that I cant disable RAID,. I want to use only one single drive as fast as I can.
but the RAID bios always appears on the screen when booting slowing things downn
( pressing F10 doesn’t help because I don’t have other drive) then windows starts loading.
How can I disable raid and keep one single sata drive functioning ? pata ( cd drive) and sata is enabled on bios                                                                                   One of the readme files mentions that there are 2 type of  sata bios, one with raid and the other without  it  (6420NXXX.ROM)  how can I install the new sata bios? Anybody knows  a solution?
    Thanks
    Sorry for the lousy English

    Hi
The screen you are seeing appears to be the VIA SATA drives screen, aslong as SATA are connected and enabled you will see this. It is setting up your satas,
CH_0 is the drive on SATA1, CH_1 is the SATA2 connector. Ignore the raid, it is a controller for the sata drive.

  • RAID 5 Set Suddenly NOT VIABLE!

I'm running an early 2008 Mac Pro with an Apple Raid Card with 4 internal, 1TB drives formatted into a single Raid 5 set. The raid card has had numerous issues in recent years, mainly drives that would unexpectedly drop out of the Raid and list as "roaming".  In those past cases, Apple had me shut down the computer, remove the drive sled of the problem drive, wait a few minutes and replace the drive then restart.  On one occasion, the Raid set was back to normal, on other occasions the drive was seen and I would have to assign it as a spare and rebuild the set.  Everything would work fine until the next time.
In the last few days, I discovered the Mac Pro shut down, after I had left it idle for a while with the screen asleep. When I tried to restart, I was greeted with a blank grey screen, no Apple, no anything.  I tried booting from CDs and external Boot Drives with no luck.  This morning I was finally able to boot onto an external drive and discovered my Raid 5 set is now "NOT VIABLE!"
ALL drives are listed "Verified" and "Good." Bays 1 and 2 are "assigned" while Bays 3 and 4 are listed as "Roaming."  The Volume is showing "Degraded" and the Raid Set is listed as "Not Viable."  I have tried shutting down and removing all the drives then reinserting them (in their original slots) and restarting, but nothing changes.
Is there any way I can get these two drives to assign back to the Raid Set WITHOUT losing all my data?  Is there any way to recover all may data?  Am I hosed here and everything is a loss?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Brett B.
Here is a screen capture of what Raid Utility reported:

In my experience, Apple RAID  in general (with RAID card or without) does not tolerate a very high error-retry rate from the Drives.
I had a mirrored RAID that repeatedly became Degraded, and decided to take strong action. I made sure I had two Backups, then pulled out the Drives and erased them with Write Zeroes, one pass. One of the drives had more than 10 blocks that needed to be "spared", so Initialization Failed. I ran the procedure multiple times and found that 30 blocks had needed to be spared. If any of these had been marginal in daily use, it could have caused the drive to get (what appears to be) stuck doing dozens to hundreds of retrys, but still not throw an I/O Error that would bring the system to a Halt.
Google did a very large study and concluded that there is a very high probability that drives with multiple errors will end up being replaced within about six months. They attributed this to a cascade of additional errors that often followed the first group detected, leading to the drive being declared unusable.
In my opinion, just reseating the drive (combined with rebuilding, which does re-write the data blocks) may not be strong enough medicine to fix a recurring problem. A drive may repeatedly be doing multiple retrys on some data blocks, or may have Bad Blocks.
I suggest you Zero the troublesome drives (which takes many hours each). If Disk Utility finds more than 10 blocks that need to be spared, or if the drive runs out of available spares, it will report "Initialization Failed!" Consider such a drive not good enough for use in a RAID and replace it with a new one. Or just rebuild your RAID with different (e.g., larger) new drives.

  • Time to Initialize Volume in a RAID 5 Set?

On a brand new Mac Pro 12 Core machine with an Apple RAID card, I created a new RAID 5 set with 4 2 TB drives for a total of 5.23 TB using the RAID Utility after booting from the Install DVD. However, when I then create one volume (Macintosh HD), it gets created just fine, but stays on Initializing forever. Task says it's running the Initialization, but the blue on the progress bar is barely moving. How long should this Initialization step take? Someone please help! Thanks!

I am in the same boat with same hardware. Raid Migration took 8 hours. Initialization step still going at 30+ hours. I actually have called support on this and am waiting for a full explanation to resolve. I have tried canceling the process and starting over. However, Disk Utility will not respond. I have tried rebooting and when I open the RAID Utility it still shows 2 percent remaining in initialization. I am curious "CJM53BIWA", you posted your message on March 2nd, were you able to resolve the issue?

  • New, larger drives for Sonnet Fusion RAIDs

    Hello-
I got some great advice here a couple of years ago in regards to building my two 5-drive RAID systems with Sonnet Fusion 500Ps and WD RE2 500GB enterprise drives. They have performed flawlessly, and I've never had a single glitch. (They are connected to my 2006 MacPro and are used almost exclusively for video capture).
Now, however, I'm in need of more storage; I want to either add a 3rd enclosure (I'm considering the FirmTek SeriTek 5-bay enclosure) or replace the 500GB drives I have with larger ones. Perhaps eventually I'll do both; I have a Sonnet E4P with two SATA ports still available.
Either way, I'm looking for larger drive recommendations for these boxes. I use a striped RAID 1 configuration for the 500Ps I have, and then backup/clone one box to the other.
I've been considering the WD 1.0TB Caviar Black Enterprise drives, but I might want to go with 1.5TB drives, such as the Seagate 7200.11. The price on these is right, but I've heard that early versions of this model had problems in RAID configurations; it's also not a 5 yr. warranty/enterprise class drive.
Any suggestions? I got valuable help last time from mbean and hatter; perhaps they will contribute again, but I'd appreciate any advice I can get before purchasing 10 new drives, or 5 additional drives and a new enclosure.

Thanks for the reply and the recommendation. The Samsung is pretty new; I wonder how reliable it is. MacSales (OWC) has a Samsung 1TB model HD103UJ (The U replaces the S) and it is more expensive.
    Hi,
The Samsung F1 HD103UJ is the older model. AMUG has 18 of these that were used in RAID tests for the last year. They are a great HD - but for blazing speed the new Samsung F3 model HD103SJ is the next replacement and about 20% faster.
I have never found "Enterprise" hard disks worth the extra money. The reason is that most standard hard disks will reliably last 3 years and the enterprise versions are almost never faster than the standard version they were developed from. After 3 years all of my hard disks are ancient technology.
Three years ago the hot hard drive to own was a 300GB with 65MB/sec performance. We thought that was great. Now its in the junk heap or delegated to backup duty on a notebook
Hard disk technology is increasing much faster than most of us can keep up with and prices are very reasonable for new 1TB hard disks. Sure there will be a few buyers who think they need to pay the 2TB premium but most users will wait until these hard disks are under $130.
Buying hard disks at premium prices can be painful especially when you realize that a new set will probably be required every 3 years.
    Have fun!

  • MacPro Raid Card single drive size limit

OK this is a follow up to a previous question about the upper size limit of a single HD that the Macpro Raid card can address.
It was pointed out to me that "The Apple RAID card cannot address more than 2.2TB of a drive" by Mr. Grant Bennet-Alder. So I am assuming that a 2TB SAS will work.
I plan to RMA the 4TB drive (that was not recognised), so my question is will this drive work instead?
Seagate Constellation ES 2TB 6GB/S SAS 7200RPM 3.5in (ST2000NM0001) Hard Drive  -  setup as JBOD.
It's not that I don't believe what Grant has said, it's just that I don't want to RMA this drive as well, using the old wood working philosophy of 'measure twice, cut once.'
And I spent 2 hr looking for this info on Apple's support site without any luck.

If a Disk Fails If a RAID set or volume becomes degraded because a disk has failed, you can use RAID Utility to identify the disk that needs to be replaced.
Note: If your RAID setup includes a spare drive, it is automatically incorporated into the RAID set, and the set switches from degraded to good as soon as the recovery process finishes. If there is no spare, the set will remain degraded until you replace the failed drive, and if a second drive fails before you replace the first, you could lose data.
    To replace a failed disk:
1  Open RAID Utility, select the RAID set or volume that is displaying a problem status indicator, and look for a drive bay with a red status indicator. The bay numbers in RAID Utility correspond to the numbered drive bays in your Mac Pro or Xserve.
2  Replace the bad drive module.
3  Use the Make Spare command to set up the new drive as a global spare. If no spare was available when the original drive failed, the RAID card uses the new spare immediately to rebuild the affected RAID set and volumes. If a spare was available at the time of the failure, it is already incorporated into the affected RAID set, and the new spare remains available until it is needed.

  • Can you combine the two sides of an Xserve RAID into a single drive?

I am looking to combine my Xserve sides into a single drive so that it will be more efficient for storing beyond hi-def video. I have an Xserve RAID with 14x750GB drives which format in RAID5 down to 4.09TB per side. I want to create a singe 8.18TB drive from these.
Is there an easy way to do it?

Thanks for the info William, I did backup a few important files before this happened, but I would like to get to a few more.
It happened when our IT guy was showing me how to create a new RAID set. He created a set while explaining a few things, then selected the new one he made, and deleted it. Right then, both sets disappeared and were deleted, the empty one he made, and the one we needed. I was watching him, and he didn't select both, just the empty one he'd made. So, I was hoping that there would be a work around just so that I could maybe use a data rescue utility to possibly pair the 2 together long enough for me to back up some files.
If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know.
    thank you.

please provide guidance...  using windows 7 system management utility to format raid 0 on new drive..? and please provide link to download HP raid 0 drivers... and how to install raid drivers..?
     - Mark

    Hi MarkFawcett,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you want to install RAID drivers.  In this document for What is RAID technology? it explains what HP recommends.  HP does not recommend using RAID on consumer computers.
That being said, if you are still wanting to use RAID you will need to contact INTEL for the drivers and here is a Intel® Rapid Storage Technology User Guide.
I hope this information helps, please let me know.
Thank you and have a great day!

  • Seeking guidance on upgrading from single drive to RAID on XServe

    Hi,
I'd be grateful for any guidance anyone can give me on upgrading my XServe to a RAID.
My 2GHz G5 XServe runs 10.3 and has a single 80GB drive. It's been running for 3 years providing mail, web sites (around 100) and around 10 java applications for that time without any trouble. However, I'd like to get it running on a mirrored RAID array (RAID1).
Is it possible to backup the existing disk to a FW drive. Insert a new disk, format the old and new disk as a RAID1 setup, then restore the previous OS setup, user, mail, web sites, applications etc?
I've got this server running very sweetly, it's extremely reliable but I'm worried about the disk failing.
I've read other posts here that have described trying to do this but that the old backup may overwrite low level RAID1 formatting upon restore. Any thoughts on how I can avoid that?
    Kind Regards,
    Chris.

    Hi Chris
I’ve never done it that way because of the potential problems you describe. Perhaps some of the other guys have a way of making that method reliable. Seeing as you have an XServe why don’t you buy two drives instead of one? They are cheap enough nowadays. 2x250GB SATA drives should do.
I would target disk mode the server to a laptop for example and prep your RAID Mirror that way. Restore using DU or clone using CCCloner to the new RAID, restart and test. This way if you hit any problems you will still have a working server on your original drive. Plan on 40mins to an hour downtime.
    Hope this helps – Tony

  • Panther server, move from single drive to RAID 1

    Hello,
I am trying to find out if this can be done on a system (Xserve G3) with Panther server running on it. I know this is old, but right now the school will not upgrade the server.
It has the original 60GB hard drive and is running out of space. I would like to replace it with two 500GB HD's using software RAID.
In Panther, can you clone or CCC the OS and move it to a RAID1 from a single drive, or do we need to install and configure a new installation on the RAID set?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Mike

There were major changes in Disk format from 10.3 Panther to 10.4 Tiger, especially in RAID drives. I believe the 10.4 Server Installer converts your Boot RAID (if applicable) but does not deal with your data-only RAID drives. In the case you are proposing, the upgrade from 10.3 to 10.4 may require you to copy your data-only RAID drives yet again.
My older SCSI RAID drives which ran fine in 10.3 were not recognized as having a valid Driver (of any description) in 10.4. The old drives could not be mounted, and therefore could not be "promoted" to 10.4 RAID Drives. Luckily, RAID tools in 10.4 Tiger are much improved.
Using only one additional full-size drive, I was able to move the array to a spare Mac, install 10.3 to get them recognized, then Network-mount and copy them onto a single-member RAID array in 10.4 Server. Creating a single member of a Mirrored Array required some fancy command-line work in 10.4 Server.
The bottom line: If you can upgrade to 10.4 Server first, it will be much less work (and much less risk).

  • Raid 0 vs Single Drive

I have a Lumix GH4 and I'm starting to edit in 4k.  I need a new thunderbolt drive and was wondering if Raid 0 is faster than a single drive.  A LaCie 6T Big2 Raid vs LaCie D2 single drive. Both are the same price.

I'm VERY shy in any prediction and any 'number values' according that magic idol 'speed' ..
No, I don't link to my 4k-4x Multicam-on-a-Mini-stunt again , but in my humble opinion and observation, plain 'numbers' don't mirror the performances of FCPX! What I said before: any not-too-stuffed usb3 drive is more than fast enough to deliver a 4k-native-stream. The question is: is FCPX to display that stream? With all the bells&wistles related to it, waveforms, thumbnails, perhaps applied effects etc etc etc.
And, don't get tired to repeat that: What if the project contains multiple video-streams, compos (green screen, pip, ...), compounds, Multicam?
Then, the transfer-rate from one metal-box to the other is just one (weak) criteria.
I've read somewhere (sorry no link at hand), you'll notice a dramatic decline of performance, if a drive is close-to-full  - which makes sense, when you visualize how data is handled on a spinning platter... (2015, and we rely on technique from turntables...). Or, imagine some 'super-fast' Pegasus - and just 2 tiny booms have to dance across the spinning driks, collecting bits for say 6 streams of video..
    (pic source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6677545.stm )
And I've read somewhere (should be fcp.co), that FCPX and Compressor do handle videos differently on task of 'conversion' ..
And there are many folks, who keep their Macs very busy, by indexing HDDs, loading updates, sharing to clouds, listening to streamed musuc etc etc etc.. then, more Ram = more better!
    ... summary:
drive-speed is a topic; but by far not the only one to create a 'snappy' FCPX experience!

  • Adding A New Drive To A Software RAID 5 Array

Edit 3: Just mounted the partitions and I can delete them because they contain nothing special. Is it safe to expand the 2nd partition of each drive to fill up the left over 22 GB?
Edit 2: I just deleted all the partitions off of my new drive and created one partition, then added it to the array and it works just fine. My next question is, can I delete all the smaller partitions and expand /dev/sd[x]2 to reclaim all the space (about 70 GB)?
One of my drives failed and Western Digital sent me a new drive, except it was an external drive instead of an internal drive, so I cracked it open and the label looked different. Turns out it's just refurbished and it's the same model as my other drives (WD Caviar Green 3 TB).
I've read through the wiki article on Software RAID and created the partitions exactly the same as my other drives, but while creating the main 2.7 TB partition it says that the ending sector is out of range when it isn't. I'm new to all this so I have no idea what to do. From what I've read there normally aren't this many partitions per disk, correct? I also have md124, md125 and md126 for the other partitions. md127 is for the 2.7 TB partitions. I took the array out of my Thecus N4520. I have a 3 TB external drive and a 1TB internal, along with another 500 GB drive. Would I be better off at destroying the RAID set and creating a fresh RAID 5 set, considering I'm losing about 90 GB if I don't need the smaller partitions.

I managed to get it to work by creating a partition that takes up the whole drive and is actually 22 GB larger than all the other drives (since I found out that the had root, swap and home partitions that are no longer needed).
I should be able to resize the other partitions without a problem, correct? They're EXT4. Should I unmount the raid array and do them individually, remount the array, let it sync and do the next? Or just unmount the array, resize all of them, mount it and let it sync?

I have a MAC Pro from 2011 currently running MAC OS 10.9.5.  This weekend I cloned the MAC HD drive to a new SSD drive for improved performance.  The clone was completed successfully with no errors.  After the clone completed I successfully restarted my system using the SSD as the boot device.  I then successfully tested all of my products, including Photoshop CS6 and all of its plug-ins.  I successfully tested the key features that I frequently use.  Today while attempting to launch Photoshop CS6 a message is being displayed indicating that a scratch disk cannot be found.  All drives are available on the system via the Finder and Disk Utility.  I can access all drives including the old MAC HD which is no longer the boot device.  I've even attempted to launch Photoshop from the old device yet the same error persist.  Is there a way to review/edit/change Photoshop preferences if Photoshop doesn't launch?  I've even restarted my system several times to see if that would resolve the issues.  Does anyone have any recommendations for this issue?  Have you previously address this issue?
    Thank you Gregg Williams

  • Cloned iMac drive onto a new macbook???

    hey all,
I am converting our family pc from an intel 20" iMac to a new 2.4ghz macbook. I have a current copy of my iMac drive made by CCC onto a firewire drive. I was going to just boot off that drive on my new macbook then clone the drive onto the macbook drive. I was already running the latest verizon of 10.5 and iLife. And reasons this would be a bad idea??
    Thanks!
    Tony

Don't know what to tell you, if I choose about this mac, and click where it says version, I get Build 9C7010.. I did what you said, ran it off the firewire drive for a while everything seemed fine, so I went ahead and cloned the drive. So far so good..

  • Expanding Hard Drive Space and Create new RAID arrays

I currently have a 120GB HD that came with computer. I recently installed a new 250GB hard drive to expand my hard drive space. The questions is, can I mirror my current (120GB) hard drive onto the new 250GB drive, install a second 250GB drive, and then create a software RAID with the new drive set, thus creating a 500GB software raid with my the data contained on my old (120GB) hard drive?

    Hi subterranean;
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums.
If you mirror a 120 GB drive and a 250 GB drive, the result will be equal to the smaller hence you would end up with a 120 GB mirror RAID array.
That doesn't sound to practical to me. Exactly what do you hope to gain here. It might help you to talk about end results rather then solutions. That way we can come up with solutions that will give you the results you are after.
