Cloning a TM hard Drive

Can I use Copy Cat Cloner to clone one TM drive to another and keep the integrity of the back-up?

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes - I've seen the query before and responses have been positive. Just be sure the format type of each drive is the same (not really sure about this, but do it if you can to be safe).

  • How do I restore time machine alias files cloned from broken hard drive

My external hard drive broke (a tiny transistor broke off after the drive fell two feet to the floor) so I purchased a new one and had the Geek Squad clone what was on my old hard drive onto my new one. I was using Time Machine to backup my files. My external hard drive had a much larger capacity than my macbook pro, so I deleted a number of the files saved on my Macbook Pro, knowing that I could access my files whenever I plugged my ext. hard drive in.
After plugging my new external hard drive into my computer, however, I am finding only alias files and I do not know how to restore my data so I can access all of the files again.
Does anyone know how to restore my time machine data from the cloned data I had transferred from my broken external hard drive to my new external hard drive?
    Thanks!

An update - I finally took both of my HDs in to an Apple store and they confirmed my fear: only alias files had been transferred from my old drive, meaning Geek Squad charged me $100 for 850 MB of unusable files.
That has been clear since early in this thread.
Geek Squad has agreed to retry the process
Why pay them to do what you don't need done??? Get a refund and buy an enclosure, which you should have anyway for backups.
but I'm now wishing that I had received more sound advice when I brought the drives into them in the first place.
Don't know who gave you that advice, but I sure wouldn't trust them with my data!
The Apple rep. informed me that my HD works perfectly fine and that it just needs a new enclosure (which I can buy for $20 online, as opposed to paying $100 for a data transfer).
Ummm, the action to take seems very clear to me . . . .

  • Cloning a bad hard drive

If this were a PC, I'd have no problem. But I'm not a Mac Tech.
I usually back up my laptop's hard drive to an external hard drive using the Disk Utility. Has worked great, never had to restore from it.
Now, the hard drive is begining to fail. So I tried to make one more backup of it, to save me reinstalling when I get the new HD. But the backup fails because of a file system error (file/dir does not exist), which is due to the bad state of the hardware.
Now if this was a PC, I'd just use a utility to copy the drive, errors and all, which would be fine because then I could fix the problem once the data is on a good hard drive.
But I have no such utility for my Mac. My PC utilities don't recognize the Mac file system, so I can't trust them.
*So, how does one copy a slightly buggy hard drive using a Mac? Any tricks in Disk Utility? Tried it from the CD, same result. And other utilities?*
I could just reinstall, but I just got this thing built just right a month ago!

One Mac cloning utility that I like is Super Duper:
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You can download it and do a clone of your hard drive for free. If you decide to register it, you can unlock other features.
Another utility is called Carbon Copy Cloner. I have never used it, so I don't know much about it. I believe you can download and run it for free, and then make a donation if you like it.
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
I have never attempted to clone a bad hard drive, so I don't know how this would work.
    Good luck!

  • Having problems cloning a new hard drive to install in Macbook Pro 2012

I have a 2009 MBP and I just bought a Crucial 256GB SSD drive. I have cloned it a couple of ways (SuperDuper & CCC) and also tried installing my MBP hybrid drive into the new 2012 MBP. Nothing I have tried has worked. What happens is when I boot I hear a loud beep and then in about 15-20 seconds I get the circle with a cross through it. The original drive in the 2012 MBP works fine but obviously I want all my data from my 2009 MBP + my shiny new SSD drive.
    Any ideas?!?

    Do this:
Install the drive back to your Macbook 2012.  Put your Crucial SSD in a USB enclosure.
Go to your utilities folder and open Migration Assitant and copy the files or apps over using that.
Once you've done that and you can see your files and apps on the 2012 Macbook.
You can now proceed in formatting or erasing your SSD using Disk Utility. Format it MAC OS Extended Journaled.
Open Carbon Copy and start cloning.  Source Drive your macbook hard drive.  Destination: your SSD.
Now hit clone - you will get a pop up sayingt that a recovery partition is was not created.  Create one using Carbon Copy.  Once that's done, proceed with the clone.
Once the clone is done, then install your SSD in your 2012 Macbook and everything should now boot up fine.
If you find your boot time is taking too long after you've installed your SSD, go to system preferences - startup disk and select your SSD as the startup, restart and you should be up to speed now.
Good luck and don't do any short cuts - follow these steps so you won't have any issues.

  • Cloning a new hard drive containing VM Fusion

Anyone out there know whether or not my copy of Windows (and it's data) on VM Fusion will be transferred to a new hard drive that I need to install in my MacBook if I use one of the cloning applications? I use Windows on it to run some vet. medical software that drives a bluetooth ECG machine. It would be nice to just transfer the software and it's stored ECG tracings via cloning rather than lose it and have to re install on a new hard drive.
    thanks in advance.

A VMWare Windows "drive" is just a Mac file, so any cloning utility that copies the OS and all your data should copy that as well.

  • Cloning a Laptop Hard Drive

I purchased a new hard drive for my laptop and EZ Gig II cloning package from another online retailer. The cloning seemed to go well until I tried to install the new hard drive on laptop and got the infamous C:\Windows\system32\winload exe missing or corrupt message. After searching for answers I'm now wondering if bringing laptop and hard drive to Geek Squad and askiing them to do the cloning (with or without the actual install which I can do).
    Would they do it?
Would it be $49.95 in store?
    What am I missing?
    THANKS!

Personally I would had just did a fresh install of the OS. I never had good luck cloning a hdd. I just get an external case to put the old hdd in to get the files I want to save. I know its a PITA to reinstall all your programs, but it pretty much is reliable doing it this way.
Have you tried throwing your Windows disk in and doing a repair?
I guess the fresh install is certainly an option. My frustration is really with either the cloning software ("Works with Vista!") or the less-known drive manufacturer. I am computer literate enough to follow the instructions for the cloning and removal of old drive and intall of new drive.
And I actually work for the business that owns the laptop. I'm actually on my way to get whatever install discs that came with the laptop. I've also ordered recovery disc right from HP.
The cloning software wants me to do this complicated this burning ISO disc. The hard drive people are sure it is the cloning software's problem.
I do have some programs that I'll need to get another install or unlock key for, my big iTunes library and account, etc...
Bottom line is my 120G HD is less then 10G from being full and I have this fine new 320G HD I want to install. That is what led me to ask if cloning is a service that the Geek Squad would do.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • Cloning an hp hard drive

I have a hp pavilion desktop running windows vista home premium 64 bit os. During startup, i get an error saying hard drive is failing. I have a 500 GB 7200rpm SATA drive installed and i purchased a seagate drive with the exact capacity, specs as the old drive. I want to clone the old hard drive to the new drive using the software seagate provides. Seagate says when you clone the drive be ready to have os disks for security with vista. Never got disks but hard drive has a recovery partition (d) as well as a c boot partition. Can't i just clone the drives and will it check the recovery partion to verify my vista os. I want to just clone the drives, remove old drive, and connect new drive in same SATA port as old drive and now boot from new cloned drive.

    Hi,
Actually depending on the software and available options, you can clone the whole HDD (new HDD must be bigger or equal old HDD - C: and D: in your case) or you can just clone the OS drive (in your case C.

  • I need help cloning a new hard drive

    Hey Guys,
I just bought a new WD 500gb Scorpio Black Hard Drive. I also bought a hard drive enclosure. I'm trying to clone the new hard drive so I can replace it with the old one. I just have a few questions since this is my first time doing anything to my Macbook Pro. Do I have to create a new image to the desktop in order to start cloning the hard drive using Carbon Copy Cloner? I don't know if I'm doing it right, the disk utility progress says creating new image and reading whole disk (unknown partition). Am I going in the right direction? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external new drive. Source means the internal old drive.
Remove the new drive from the enclosure and replace the old drive in the computer with it.

  • Cloning my old hard drive

I want to clone my hard drive into a new 120gig one, so that I have double the space I had before. I have put the 120gig into an external caddy. However when I plug it in, it says 'unable to read disc'. So I click initialize, and Disc Utility opens but I dont know what i'm supposed to do. I want to use SuperDuper! for the clone, but I'm not really sure how to make the actual clone. Anyone have any instructions?

    PARTITIONING DRIVE
You need to have a partition for OS X. Partitioning will erase your drive.
Open disk utility in the utilities folder in finder. Choose your drive.
Choose partition and then under volume scheme choose 1 partitions. Then choose Option and pick guid partition table. For format choose *mac os extended journaled*. Pick a name for this partition
Now in the right hand corner choose partition. It will take a while so be patient.
After you do this you can use Super Duper to make a bootable clone. It should be self explanatory when you open SD. You pick your present internal drive as the source and the external as the target.

  • Cloning Windows Vista Hard Drive

    I have a Mac Pro.
I have Windows Vista installed on a separate internal hard drive.
I want to make a bootable clone of this Windows Vista hard drive onto another separate internal hard drive.
Is there a program or utility that allows this.
I have tried Norotn Ghost and it is not "reliable".
    Thanks

You can try Winclone by downloading it from [HERE|http://www.twocanoes.com/winclone>. Please do a search on Winclone in the forums so that you get a full idea about it.

  • Cloning Mac Pro Hard Drive

I bought 4 1tb hard drives for my 1st gen mac pro. I've already installed and formatted my 3rd and 4th drives. I'd like to take my remaining 2 1tb drives and use them in the first 2 slots on the mac pro. What would be the best way to clone my main macintosh hd to my new 1tb drive? Should I install leopard on the drive first and then install it in the mac pro? How can I go about doing this?

Yup. But I read that you wanted to do two drive swap, and sounded like clone to (? external) and then move it physically. And install OS X as another option.
So for me the explanation had me confused.
I will say that having multiple backups, clone your system, and make sure it is bootable and works should be 101 and done any time before doing any installs and updates.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO MOVE TO A SLOT. It doesn't boot based on slot, but based on drive ID and name. And you have to use Startup Disk to set the default.
Nice thing about SuperDuper, the pdf is worth reading.
And it is free to do a full drive copy. Smart copy update is when you need to buy it. And $29 I would.

  • Problem cloning your old hard drive to a new hard drive / ssd

I followed the procedure (from Bimmer, and several googled results), on cloning a boot disk for my macbook pro 17" (A1229), circa 2007, and I have a cloned SSD (Kingston ssdnow v300/240GB) that boots in an external drive, but not internally.  The original disk still boots fine internally, any ideas on what could be wrong?
Yes, I formated it using disk utility, yes carbon copy created a recovery partition for me.
    Runnign latest Mavericks version.

The procedure for Mavericks is not the same as for Lion or Mountain Lion.
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
       2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
       3. Use DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Make your own Mavericks flash drive installer using the Mavericks tool:
You can also create a Mavericks flash drive installer via the Terminal. Mavericks has its own built-in installer maker you use via the Terminal:
You will need a freshly partitioned and formatted USB flash drive with at least 8GBs. Leave the name of the flash drive at the system default, "Untitled." Do not change this name. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy this command line after the prompt in the Terminal's window:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.

I cloned the old hard drive and when I installed it the laptop wouldn't boot, it just said " no bootable CD in drive". It didn't appear to " see" my new hard drive at all, when I pressed the lenovo tools button and then used F12 to choose my boot option, the laptop just went to a black screen.
    Any ideas?

    Go to Solution.

    I used Spotmau Powersuite 2009.
I thought that there may be issues with the size of the new hard drive ( 320 GB).
I shall now go to the WD website and try the software that you suggest.
