Cloning an OSX 10.3.9 Server startup disk

Hello,
I'm having some problems with an XServe startup disk running out of disk space for no apparent reason. I'm going to do a clean install of OSX Server 10.3, but before I do I'd like to know if cloning the current startup disk to another, blank but larger drive within the XServe and then booting from that will have any affect on the system as a whole, or should it just work as normal? The startup disk is just that, and runs the applications. Otherwise it's an AxusYota RAID where all of the share points, backups etc. are kept/go to. The main applications running are Kerio Mail Server, Meeting Maker Calendar and FileMaker Pro Server.

If I clear out the swap I still only get about 450MB of free space each time I restart. I've tried so many ways of discovering what's taking up the space, but no luck as yet. That's why I'd like to install from scratch. I'll be cloning to a much larger drive, so I'm not worried about the disk space issue on the new drive. Am just curious as to how the whole setup will run off the clone...

    Is the disk partitioned?
    Boot the operating system DVD, use Disk Utility from the Utilities menu (second screen of the installation process, just before you start the actual install) to ake a complete backup to an external disk, make a second backup (in case there's a problem with the first), wipe and repartition the internal disk (using Disk Utility), and reload.
    You'll want to consider whether you want to mirror the two disks within the box, too; to set up RAID-1 across both of the 500 GB drives in the box.  That mirroring can be established when you're wiping and repartitioning the disks.

    I posted this issue once before however it became a long post and I thought I would start again so that I could focus the question more accurately and as well to indicate that some of these solutions might not work.
    OK, Here is the issue: Against conventional practice, I am trying to use both OS 8.6 and OS X on the same computer but on different disks. The question is, how does one re-startup in OSX once one was previously in OS 8.6? The challenge is that OS 8.6 (unlike OS 9) is not very compatible with OSX in terms of being able to boot back and forth between the two systems.
    Here are my three solutions. I am particularily interested in keeping the two OSes on separate disks (as in solutions 2 and 3 below) - which makes this a challenging problem - how do you boot back into OSX after previously being in OS 8.6?
    Here are the three solutions:
    solution 1 (if OS8 and OSX are on same partition)
    Since 8.6's Startup Disk can't recognize Mac OS X directly, and the Blue and White G3 does not support the Startup Manager, rebooting back into Mac OS X is best done if both are on the same partition, since all you have to do is hold the X key to startup in Mac OS X. You won't be able to do so if they are on separate partitions. For good measure when you restart back into Mac OS X, repair permissions.
    solution 2 (if OS8 and OSX are on a different partition)
    If you want to be able to switch to OSX while booted to OS 8.6, you will need to update the Startup Disk control panel - the one in OS 8.6 can not recognize OSX as a valid boot OS.
    You can download and install this replacement, which (in spite of what the info about it states) others have found also works with OS 8.6 -

    I just found another way to reboot back into OS X from OS 8.6:
    "To unbless (or make inactive) a system folder simply pull the Finder File out of it."
    So, I suppose I could just unbless the OS 8.6 system folder by pulling the finder file out of the 8.6 system folder and then restarting the computer and it should find OSX.
    But then I would have to put the finder file back into the 8.6 system folder if I wanted to reboot back into 8.6. I suppose I could so that from OSX
    Summary of question:
    Unfortunately I tried solutions 2 and 3 and both did not work on my beige G3 due to some issues which I am determined to troubleshoot later. In any case, could anyone think of another way boot back into OSX after previously being in OS 8.6?

    The procedure for transferring files over Ethernet depends upon the exact operating systems involved. Recent Mac OS X versions have limitations as far as file sharing with older Macs is concerned.
    One alternative method with fewer limitations could be to use a web server on the old machine. Personal Web Sharing (the Web Sharing control panel) may already be present on the G3 computer, or can possibly be added through a custom install. A router with a built-in multi-port Ethernet switch (LAN ports), with the WAN port disconnected from the Internet, can be used for a local setup. A web browser on the new computer would give access to files.
    A utility creating compressed archives can simplify transfers.

    it seems that you try to deploy your application but it's taking a very long time that exceeds the timeout.
    Are you deploying your application from Eclipse (oepe) or from the admin console ?

  • Message bean does not start automatically during application server startup

    I have a message bean that does not start up during application server startup. I am able to successfully start the application manually using the visual admin tool.I searched the logs and found the following error. The error references the "QueueConnectionFactory" is not deployed or is not started. I have check and the "QueueConnectiopnFactory" is deployed. Is this a problem with the application trying to start before the "QueueConnectionFactory"? Is thier a way to define a dependency on my application not to start until the "QueueConnectionFactory" has been started, if so can how would I define this dependency. Please provide and example.

    I though the same thing, but XE LISTENER is running on localhost and port 1522. On the other hand XE have local_listener explicitly set to the very same connection descriptor. Even XE installation was second on this server.
    I've could change that yes, but the startup script doesn't seemed to have this mind.

  • Time machine no longer backs up after cloning startup disk

    I cloned my startup disk (250 mb) in April 2013 to a 500 mb disk and replaced it with the cloned disk. Before the clone, Time Machine was backing up properly to the 6tb external drive designated for backup.  Since installing the clone Time Machine has not backed up anything.  Everything (all the apps) is working properly on the cloned disk except, apparently, Time Machine. In fact, I cannot get Time Machine to allow me to make any adjustments to the settings. I went on the Apple Support website to see if I can reinstall Time Machine, but could not find anything. Any suggestions?

    If only the system was cloned with CCC it should work, though if you change names who knows.
    Delete the plist and turn off and on.

  • Time Machine and a Cloned StartUp Disk

    I have a BootCamp partition on my startup disk that is painfully too small. In the next couple of hours I will have a 2 TB drive delivered to replace it. Splitting it in half between Mountain Lion and BootCamp/Windows, I have addressed any issues I thought would arise. I plan to clone the Mac partition of my current drive onto the new and just do a clean install of the BootCamp/Windows partition. Backups done, preparations taken care of, my final concern has come to mind...
    Will Time Machine continue its incremental updating from a cloned drive?
    In the past, any time I've changed computers the backup wasn't available. Other forums I've checked says that Time Machine allies itself with the MAC address of the computer it backs up. Some hinted that there's a paring with the drive it backs up as well. Is this true? I'm not changing Macs, I'm not even changing the data; I'm just changing the drive its on.
    It's not a big deal if I lose the backup though I'd prefer not having to go through that initialization again. It just seems logical that Time Machine would view the clone same as the original. Any feedback?

    I personally only have the Time Machine backup. The main advantage of the Time Machine backup is that it happens automatically every hour that the Mac is active, incrementally backing up files that changed. With a clone, it is only as up to date as the last time you performed a cloning run. The second advantage of Time Machine is that you can +go back in time+ to an earlier state, not just restore to the latest state. With a clone, all you have is the last backup.
    The advantage of a clone is that you can boot from it. So if your hard drive fails, you can still use your iMac to wrap up necessary work before sending your iMac in for repair.
    It you have two external hard drives, there would be nothing wrong with doing both. Make a clone about once a month and let Time Machine handle the up-to-the-last-hour backups.
    If you had to choose one, I would use Time Machine.
    It is remotely possible that your primary storage drive and your Time Machine drive will fail at the same time. So I do keep my most critical files (just the files) backed up to second separate storage location. I do that manually.

  • IMac will not boot into OSX after startup disk switch in control panel.!

    I am having trouble with my son's iMac DV SE (graphite) running Classic and OSX (10.3.9). Typically, the computer runs in OS9 as the startup system because most of the kids' software we run is old and uses Classic. Over the weekend, I changed the startup disk to OSX in the control panels and restarted the computer so I could install some new software. The computer will not boot past the gray apple and progress indicator. I have tried resetting the PRAM, booting from the CD and restarting with the options key depressed to no avail. (Can't do a Safeboot either.) I was able to put the iMac into target mode and access the control panels via my laptop and restart in OS9. I thought I had resolved the issue causing the startup problem, but I was wrong. Now I can't get past the gray apple or access the hard disk through target mode (the iMac hard disk does not appear on the laptop's desktop). Is there a way to force the computer back into OS9 other than holding down the option key at startup? When I try this, I get the hard disk icon, but I can't move it off of OSX. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Holding down the OPTION key will only work if OS 9 is on a different partition than the OS X installation. If they are on the same partition, it won't work.
    One way to get it back to OS 9 is to boot from the OS 9 or OS X installation disc. Then set the control panel, or preference pane, to boot from the OS 9 installed on the hard drive.
    Another way is to boot from the OS 9 install disc and perform a clean install of OS 9. This will create a new OS 9 System folder and it will NOT touch any other files on the drive. KB 58176, Mac OS 8.5, Mac OS 9: Performing a Clean Installation

    I am installing a standalone Agentry Server for Work Manager 6.0 on the server where we have installed SMP 2.3.
    It has been installed successfully and does start up, however I get some annoying error messages during start up.
    It seems that the server is running - I can succesfully synchronize to an ATE client.
    Due to the results from this thread, I have changed all ports in the Agentry.ini file to separate ports numbered 7521, 7522, 7523 and 7524.

Since our requirement wanted the startWeblogic script to exit the window after server startup, we set the parameter SET doExitFlag=true in startweblogic.cmd file , but the result was same as earlier the server started without exiting the window. Also we tried Redirecting the server starup output to a file , but even this did not exit the window.
    My query is
    1. What parameter options one should use to start the server so that it exits the command window in which it was started?
    2. Is there an alternate way to do the same,something like to start it as a background process in Windows?
    Any help in this regard would be great.

    I have the same issue with Logmein, which I installed a trial, uninstalled with appzapper, which I thought does a good job of untangling the components of apps but for these 2 it doesn't.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Usually applications like these have their own uninstallers, either build into the installer ( ! ) itself or as a separate uninstaller app. Check the site of the software provider for instructions.

  • Pending message redelivery wait period after server startup

    Hi, I have seen an strange behaviour in the way pending JMS messages are
              redelivered to MDBs at server startup.
              In my unit test I have seen that, killing Weblogic during an MDB code
              execution as expected makes the container to redelivery unconfirmed message
              at server startup. I have also seen that it's redelivered about 4 minutes
              after server is started (more info of this in thread: "Problem with
              persistent messages and MDBs" 25 October 2002)
              After a recent crash we have had on the system in wich there were a lot of
              messages pending to deliver to an MDB we saw that they were being
              redelivered just after the MDBs were deployed while system was starting. Of
              course due to the fact that some components needed by the MDB were not

              I'm tring to figure a good work-around about this, what I wanted to know is
              how is implemented the "delay" to send messages after server startup. Is it
              done by comparing timestamp of message (when did it enter the queue and
              thereby persisted on the store) with current system time?. That approach of
              course will fail if any of the messages were sent before that "delay" time.
              If this is the case and there isn't a fix for it this is what I have in
              mind:
              Each MDB will have a private attribute wich will be used to detect when
              system has completely started. By default it will be false and after a
              message is sent to the MDB the first line of the onMessage method will test
              wether system has started or not (by checking weblogic connection port i.e.
              7001. Btw. is there any better way of checking server has finished start-up)
              if not, a runtime exception will be launched that will force message to be
              redelivered (without trying to execute any MDB code), I think setting a
              proper redelivery delay i.e. 30-60 secs. will allow server to startup with
              less problems (in the situation I described above JVM crashed with an 11
              system signal)
              Any other ideas to deal with this?

    Hi Ignacio,
              I think you can usually control the order in which ejb's are booted,
              through a combination of console settings and
              meta file entries. I suggest posting to the ejb newsgroup
              to find out how.
              The four minute delay you see is normal for resolving
              interrupted transactions, but I believe that an enhancement
              was put into a 7.0 SP to reduce or eliminate this interval,
              and that 8.1 has no interval. Post to the transaction
              newsgroup for more info, or contact customer support.
              Given that you referenced earlier posts on this issue, you
              probably already know how to tune the interval down to one
              minute even without the enhancements.
              There is no other delay for sending messages at system startup,
              as soon as the MDB is booted it attaches to JMS, and JMS
              starts delivering messages whose transactional state is known.

              P.S. I suppose one way to detect end-of-boot is to
              place a startup class last in the boot order.
              P.P.S. For MDBs one alternative is to code a "sleep" in the onMessage if
              an unavailable resource is detected - this
              is hokey, but works as long as you have made sure that
              max-beans-in-free-pool totals do not come near or exceed
              available thread pool size.

  • Can I run a .bat, .cmd, or .ps1 on SBS 2011 server startup, without login.... like a service.

    Hi all,
    I'm running Windows SBS 2011.  I need to run a script at server startup, prior to login to any user account (like a service does...).  This short script will check the status of another service.  Because this
    service depends on Exchange & SQL, it sometimes fails to start at reboot if Exchange and or SQL Server haven't finished initializing.
    I was also thinking of using sc.exe to change the config of the service in question (adding dependencies), but this is a third-party software from Reuters, and I am somewhat reluctant to edit the configuration of someone else's code (and possibly break something). 
    This is a production server at a law firm.

    What I do in this case (I don't have access to exact script I use) is a similar script scheduled via windows task scheduler every five minutes to check if service running, if not start it but you can have the IF-THEN-ELSE do whatever is required.
