Cloning and New C Drive

Greetings, I have a T450S with a 512 gB SSD in the main bay.  I picked up a 256 M.2 that I put in for extra storage.  I would like to transfer the OS and all my programs to the M.2 and keep my files and whatnot on the SSD.  If I simply clone the SSD (I'll remove files to get it under 256 gB) to the M.2 can I then just rename it to the C drive?  I've heard of people cloning and then running into issues with programs because it's looking for things on the C drive but the clone is now D or something.  Photoshop is known for this issue and it's one of the primary tools I use, so if that's any concern then it's a no go for me. Thanks,

Pretty sure you can't rename a drive with the same letter as the current old one (i.e., if you have a C drive, your new one will automatically pick a different letter; you have to rename the current C drive to another letter before naming another drive as C). But, if you clone the drive properly, it should take all the properties of the original drive, including the letter. If you're keeping both drives in the machine, you'll have to rename the old one and play around with some settings so it doesn't give you problems. If this doesn't work, it might be easier to just reinstall your programs on the new drive.

  • Having problems cloning a new hard drive to install in Macbook Pro 2012

I have a 2009 MBP and I just bought a Crucial 256GB SSD drive. I have cloned it a couple of ways (SuperDuper & CCC) and also tried installing my MBP hybrid drive into the new 2012 MBP. Nothing I have tried has worked. What happens is when I boot I hear a loud beep and then in about 15-20 seconds I get the circle with a cross through it. The original drive in the 2012 MBP works fine but obviously I want all my data from my 2009 MBP + my shiny new SSD drive.
    Any ideas?!?

    Do this:
Install the drive back to your Macbook 2012.  Put your Crucial SSD in a USB enclosure.
Go to your utilities folder and open Migration Assitant and copy the files or apps over using that.
Once you've done that and you can see your files and apps on the 2012 Macbook.
You can now proceed in formatting or erasing your SSD using Disk Utility. Format it MAC OS Extended Journaled.
Open Carbon Copy and start cloning.  Source Drive your macbook hard drive.  Destination: your SSD.
Now hit clone - you will get a pop up sayingt that a recovery partition is was not created.  Create one using Carbon Copy.  Once that's done, proceed with the clone.
Once the clone is done, then install your SSD in your 2012 Macbook and everything should now boot up fine.
If you find your boot time is taking too long after you've installed your SSD, go to system preferences - startup disk and select your SSD as the startup, restart and you should be up to speed now.
Good luck and don't do any short cuts - follow these steps so you won't have any issues.

  • Cloning a new hard drive containing VM Fusion

Anyone out there know whether or not my copy of Windows (and it's data) on VM Fusion will be transferred to a new hard drive that I need to install in my MacBook if I use one of the cloning applications? I use Windows on it to run some vet. medical software that drives a bluetooth ECG machine. It would be nice to just transfer the software and it's stored ECG tracings via cloning rather than lose it and have to re install on a new hard drive.
    thanks in advance.

A VMWare Windows "drive" is just a Mac file, so any cloning utility that copies the OS and all your data should copy that as well.

  • I need help cloning a new hard drive

    Hey Guys,
I just bought a new WD 500gb Scorpio Black Hard Drive. I also bought a hard drive enclosure. I'm trying to clone the new hard drive so I can replace it with the old one. I just have a few questions since this is my first time doing anything to my Macbook Pro. Do I have to create a new image to the desktop in order to start cloning the hard drive using Carbon Copy Cloner? I don't know if I'm doing it right, the disk utility progress says creating new image and reading whole disk (unknown partition). Am I going in the right direction? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external new drive. Source means the internal old drive.
Remove the new drive from the enclosure and replace the old drive in the computer with it.

  • Snow Leopard and new hard drive

I want to install a new hard drive in my MacBook and then restore from Time Machine. After I install the new hard drive do I have to reboot from the original OS X disk that came with my MacBook or can I just use the new Snow Leopard disk and restore from time machine?
If I can't reboot right from the Snow Leopard Disk would I have to restore from the original disk, then install Snow Leopard and then restore from time machine?

not sure where & how to start a conversation with you but here it is: bought a time capsule 2 weeks agao... tried to handle the whole thing by myself... however can't access hte message that says "which disk would you like to save your files too?" it just won't make that step... yet the green light is on... • Run out of Hard Drive space using Premiere Cs5- Can I save my work, buy and new hard drive?

I am in the middle of a project using premiere cs5 and I have run out of hard drive space. Can I save it, buy a new hard drive and install Premiere and then reopen it again without  it effecting my project?

If you are talking about only having one drive for Windows and programs AND video data and project files, a better option is to buy a second drive and move your projects and video data files to the new drive

  • My old mac crashed and new hard drive has new Pages on it but I cannot open any documents.  Says to save on 09, I had 08 but it crashed when the computer crashed.  Now what?

Open with new Pages and it says my documents are too old, must be opened and saved in 09, but I don't have 09, just fragments of 08 from my crashed hard drive.  What do I do now?

Do you still have your installer DVD?
Reinstall iWork '08 and upgrade it to v3.03:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewtopic.php?t=432&mforum=iworktips ntrick
Then open your documents and Export them to Word .doc/x to open in Pages 5.2.
You can also ask Apple to supply you with iWork '09 so you can access your work.
If that is unsuccessful, since Pages 5.2 is a severe downgrade, missing 110 features, get the iWork '09 boxed set from Amazon for $19.99.

  • PE 2 video track capacity and new hard drive

A three parter, as one leads to another.
In PE2 I am creating a view with the screen filled for about 10 seconds with a grid of 16 stills in a 4x4 square, peeling each one off quickly one by one. I have stacked the pix on 16 tracks. The software is running very slowly, and re-drawing a lot. I have the all project components (pixs) and the current version stored on an external hard drive. The program itself is on my internal c drive. The hard drive manufacturer says I may need to re-format the hard drive to NTFS (I also have other issues with the hard drive turning off mid-encoding, or not fully loading the program). Questions: (1) Is 16 stacked tracks too much for PE to handle? (2) If I copy the entire hard drive to a different hard drive (that is or is not formatted as NTFS) and then back to my original -- now NTFS formatted -- hard drive, will PE2 recognize the location of the files and use them, or will I need to recreate everything? (3) is there some other way to tell PE2 that the files have been moved, en mass, to a different file, and to look for, say, f/PE2/summervacation/kidsinsand rather than g/PE2/summervacation/kidsinsand?
    Thanks.

    Ned,
Normally, Premiere (I use the Pro version most of the time) will automatically locate Assets, in the same folder, when you point it to the first. However, I have had a few instances, where that did not trigger, and each Asset had to be re-linked manually. Why? I do not have a clue.
In my biggest Project, that exhibited this behavior, I was using very old versions of the Project in a newer version of P-Pro, AND it was a Mac version (earlier) going to a PC version (later). The Project files (PREL in PE) are but XML files with the links encoded. As stated, Premiere *usually* can find all Assets in the common folder.
One little trick that I learned, in the above case, was to check "Show Exact Match" box, once I navigated to the proper folder, and then for each additional file, I'd uncheck and then re-check that box. Each file would appear, and I'd choose "Open." Yes, a lot of clicks, and why they did not re-link automatically is still a mystery, as it *normally* takes care of all of the rest.
Now, unlike your example, once re-linked, and Saved, Premiere Pro DOES remember, as I would hope, and anticipate.
I'd do a Save_As_a_Copy, and locate this in a new folder. Maybe name it [Filename_New], and work from that. Obviously, keep your original Project. I wonder if there is some sort of corruption happening on these specific Projects. Remember, I am using Pro, and also going from a very old Mac version of the program to a newer PC version, but once you point to the folder, things *should* automatically take care of themselves, for all Assets in that folder.
I wish that I had a definitive answer, but my results have not done, as I would anticipate, or expect. Let us know how it goes, as there might be a clue in there someplace.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Cloning and Restoring System Drive

I have cloned my PB's hard drive to an external firewire drive and have checked it by booting from it -- all works well.
My question is how do I copy the cloned version over to the PB's hard drive in the event it is replaced or I just want to erase and restore it for optimizing? My ProSoft DataBackup software that I used to clone my drive isn't really clear on this. Thanks for any advice on this.

In order to clone back, you would want to simply run a clone from the external drive to the internal drive while booted off the external drive.

  • Illustrator freezes with Yosemite and new Wacom driver

I have a Wacom Intuos3 and have removed all the old software and preferences and installed the latest driver.  It took two conversations
with the Wacom Helpline and three instal/uninstals with restarts, but I finally got the tablet preferences to work.  Then Illustrator kept freezing up and acting wierd.
I've uninstalled the tablet software, but am sure missing my tablet.  Any ideas?

Was just on with tech support. I had a second monitor connected. when I disconnected it the problem went away. its a known issue with the resent Apple 10.10 update. they are getting a fix but no ETA. they had me uninstall and use a direct install link (Adobe CC 2014 Direct Download Links: Creative Cloud 2014 Release | ProDesignTools) ) to fall back to a earlier update of illustrator.

  • Reinstall Windows 8 on workstation with no recovery media and new hard drive.

Hello. I am needing help with a specific request.
We have a workstation what is running Windows 8. The hard drive failed. The machine has no recovery media that was created, however it is orderable through HP.
With that in mind, where are the tools for IT Pros to reinstall Windows 8 from .ISO or USB media, as we could do in Windows 7 and previous versions?
Windows 8 keeps the license key stored in the BIOS from what I read, and one option is using an .ISO for Windows 8 from an MSDN account. The install will scan the BIOS for the key, find it, and will activate Windows 8.
We are Silver Partner. currently we are turning people away or telling them they must have their Factory Recovery Media for us to reinstall Windows 8 after hard drive failures, since we cannot find any .ISO available, and there is no plain Product Key on
    the machine.

    Hi ,
"one option is using an .ISO for Windows 8 from an MSDN account."I am afraid it will not work.
The copy of Windows that the OEM installs on a computer is valid only on that unique computer, so it can only be reinstalled and reactivated from the OEM-provided recovery media on that computer. So
I am afraid an .ISO for Windows 8 from an MSDN account won`t be activated automatically.

1.I agree with britishdhez, the best way to solved this issue is contactting the manufacture for a recovery media.
2.As an alternative choice, there is a similar situation and Justin offers several other solutions. Here is the link for reference:

  • Vista and new NVIDIA Driver

Has anybody updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers?
I have the GeForce 6800 XT and updated to the latest version for Vista.  Now it wont let me stretch the desktop between monitors.  I can "ONLY" Clone if I want to use both.  Is this really the case?  Can anybody suggest a work around to get the "Stretch" back.
    Thanks!  This is frustrating...

You know you don't have to physically move the monitors...You can simply move the monitors in the display properties by dragging the little monitor icons in the order you want them.

  • Satellite Pro 2100 and new hard drive

    Hi,
    I've seen on another post that L0nestar has installed a Western Digital WD2500BEVE (250GB, 5400RPM) into a Pro 2100.
The question I have is what interface is required EIDE or SATA? The original drive states its a SATA interface, but the WD2500BEVE is an EIDE interface?
Hope someone can clear this up for me.
    Cheers.

As far as I know all old notebook models have HDDs with EIDE interface. Satellite Pro 2100 is delivered with Enhanced IDE (ATA-5) HDD.
    Bye

  • How can i add bookmarks from my old hard drive to new hard drive on the same computer without overwriting the new bookmarks on my new hardrive? Cheers

The old hard drive was operating on Xp and new hard drive is Windows 7, if this makes any difference.

Unfortunately there is no simple method and, the workaround is far from perfect. The .json files Firefox uses overwite the existing bookmarks but the .html option appends and does not overwrite.
First of all backup all bookmarks on each hard drive. The best method of doing that is to backup the Firefox profiles, that captures the bookmarks databases (''places.sqlite'') and the autobackups that Firefox holds.
    * [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
    * [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
#First ensure you have the largest databsae on the current install of Firefox. If necessary
##Locate the Firefox Profile on the old drive
##* [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data]]
##Open Firefox and find the profile that is currently in use.
##*Quick method <br/>Use FirefoxButton -> Help -> Troubleshooting Information [Open Folder] <br />(No certain of exact wordings, OR navigate to ''about:support'' )
##* [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
#Now use HTML backups to transfer from the smaller database the basic bookmarks.
    ## Close Firefox & if the old database is the largest one use the Operating System copy option to overwrite the existing places.sqlite so that Firefox now uses the old database
    ## Reopen Firefox but this time open using the old profile. The easiest method of that may be to disable the new drive from the Bios or alternatively use Firefox profile manager and register the old profile location and open firefox with that profile
##* [[Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles]]
    ## Export the bookmarks from the old profile using the Firefox Library and the HTML option.
##* see [[Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks]]
    ## Close Firefox, reopen new version/newprofile and import the HTML.
You now have the largest database of complete bookmarks with tags etc. , plus additional bookmarks from the smaller database added on. Obviously you may have some duplication

  • Windows 7 Enterprise is not genuine after installing new hard-drive and cloning the old one

I retired from my job as a university professor two years ago, and they let me keep my laptop computer, which is a Dell Latitude E4300 with Windows 7 Enterprise installed. I do not have any of the original disks for Windows. Recently, the hard-drive began
to fail, so I replaced it with a new one, cloning the old hard-drive onto the new one. Soon after that, a popup window began appearing saying that this computer is not running genuine windows. One important consequence of this is that I can no longer use Windows
Update, so I have concerns about security. If I go to the control panel under “System”, it says windows is activated and gives me the Product ID. I have talked to tech support at Microsoft, and they tell me something along the lines of the following: that
the problem is the new hard-drive is not recognized as being licensed to use this copy of Windows, and that I should post a question on one of the forums asking this: How can I reinstall Windows 7 Enterprise on the new hard-drive? Any assistance will be much
    appreciated.
PS I have no idea which forum this should go under, so pretty much just picked one randomly.
