Hi!
I want to clone my screen but I want the picture to be displayed in de the native resolutions of both my displays.
Situation:
I have a 17" MacBook Pro (native resolution =1680x1050) and I have a 19" LCD-panel (native resolution = 1280x1024). Now, if I connect the LCD-panel with my MB P my desktop is being cloned. The resoltion on both monitors changes to 1280x1024.
So, no problem fot the 19" LCD-panel (Because the picture is being displayed in the native resolution of the screen.) but the picture on my MB P looks very "yuk".
Is there a way to correctly display the the picture (my desktop) on both monitors?

You can't "clone your display" at both native resolutions (for one thing, the aspect ratio is very different between your two displays). Running an LCD display at anything other than it's native resolution leads to a "fuzzy" appearance due to the way LCDs generate an image - there's no fix for that, it's a physical property of the technology.
You have mirroring turned on. With the external display connected, go to System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab and UNcheck the Mirror Displays box.
Now you will have a desktop that spans across both displays, and you can use both at once.
(Note - when you first uncheck mirroring, the external display may have the generic Apple desktop background. If so, go to System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver and it will refresh and shop your chosen backdrop on the external monitor as well. Also note that your menu bar and dock will only show on your internal display.)

Is there a way to use an external display while keeping the Macbook open?

I'm trying to use my external display as my primary (and only display). I would be operating in clamshell mode, but this can lead to overheating issues. Is there an easy way to leave the Macbook open but turn its screen off manually when another display is connected?

could you not just connect it with the vga adapter and then turn the brightness of your screen all the way down so there is no light? i had to do that for my ibook g4 when i cracked the lcd, but thankfully i have my macbook now.

Resizing clips while keeping good resolution?

hey folks,
this might be pretty basic but is there a way I to make clips smaller without lessening the quality? I'm trying to layer four clips to have one clip in each corner all playing at once. I tried reducing the scale to 50% and I also tried using the crop tool to resize the clips but both of these attempts made the clips pretty grainy. any suggestions? thanks

Yes, this is easy in iMovie.
First go to iMovie/Preferences and make sure that the Advanced Tools are enabled.
Next, make sure your long track with the audio you want is in the Project.
Now, drag the short other clips or photos to the project and drop them on the frame of video (in the long clip) where you want them to start. When a pop-up menu appears, choose CUTAWAY.

Native resolution does not fill entire external display

I've got one of the original MacBook Pros with the Mobility Radeon X1600 hooked up to a Samsung P2350G display (it's a 23" LCD panel.) The native resolution on the display is 1920x1080.
The display has inputs for both VGA and DVI. The DVI port however is used by a desktop PC already, so I use a DVI to VGA adapter on the MacBook Pro, and use the laptop panel as a secondary display.
The problem is that when I set the external display to its native resolution, I get vertical letterboxing and some flickering along the edges of the image. It does not horizontally fill the whole display as it should. I have tried the same adapter on the PC and it worked fine (though with rather spotty image quality.)
Resolutions that are lower than 1920x1080 work fine and fill the whole display properly. I'm not exactly sure what the issue is. The laptop is only semipermanently attached to the large display so I can live with a reduced image quality there, but the flickering, slightly distorted image is just not acceptable right now.

Sounds like it might be a sync issue. Have you tried powering the monitor off and then back on with the MBP connected to it? How about just temporarily disconnecting the DVI cable from the desktop PC and using that to plug into the MBP.

Powering large displays (23 inch) at native resolution with a powerbook G4

Hi All,
I have searched the forum and although I am sure this must have been addressed, I am in need of a specific response. I have a powerbook G4 17 inch with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card that it came with. In order to run an external display such as the Cinema Display 23" at native resolution of the display will i need to purchase a new graphics card?
Secondly, if I have to purchase one, is it the type of repair that I could do myself?

The 23" will be at full resolution if used in extended desktop mode, but if mirrored, can only match the Power Book's display resolution.

External Display native resolution suddenly not available

I'm using a Westinghouse LCM-22w3 external monitor with my MBP, connected via a DVI-to VGA adapter. I've used this computer/monitor setup for quite some time with no problem. Yesterday, I hooked my computer up to my 46" Samsung HDTV with no problem.
When I hooked my computer back up to the Westinghouse, the native resolution (1680x1050) was no longer available. Instead, the monitor hooks up at 1600x1000. Strangely, though, the EDID information appears to suggest that 1680x1050 should be available. Here's the EDID:

Well, you can move the file from the desktop back to its original location to at least get back to what you had before.
The file structure under Snow Leopard has changed and it's hard to keep up with this stuff. There is also now a com.apple.WindowServer.plist file in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons that you could try moving to the desktop and restarting. I dunno. Same rule applies.....if it doesn't help, move the file from the desktop back to its original location.

Native resolution of external monitor not appearing in System Prefs - Displays

I have an Acer G206HL monitor, which has a 1600x900 native resolution. It's connected to a 13" MacBook Pro (the current non-retina model) via a Thunderbolt-to-VGA cable. The MBP is running Mountain Lion 10.8.3.
When I go to System Preferences -> Displays -> Resolution: Scaled, 1600x900 doesn't appear in the list, and none of the listed resolutions are satisfactory.
Anyone know of a way to add custom resolutions to Mountain Lion's Display preferences?

I'm having the same issue with a a 2012 MBA running Yosemite 10.10.1 (14B25). I wish I could find a solution to this problem.

LCD Won't allow me to display native resolution

Hi all. Recently installed a new HD in my T43 (T43, type 2686 running XP Pro, SP3). After updating all of the drivers through the lenovo site, I have everything pretty much working. However, I cannot set the screen for the native resolution (1400 x 1050) - it's not an option. The max I can set is 1280 x 1024, but everything looks super tiny, and I've been using 1024 x 768, as that's the least-crappy picture. I have a ATI Mobility Radeon X300 card. Here's the really bizzare bit - when the computer starts in safe mode, it automatically defaults to 1400 x 1050 res and everything looks great. I have the old HD, and things run great when I swap them out. I'll be the first to admit that i'm a n00b at this, so any help for us slow-learners would be super cool. Thanks in advance for the help!

oh yeah - I've searched through the board and can't find anything that matches.

Could you check in device manager if everything look ok? No unknown devices, no exclamation marks and check the driver version for the display adapter. To find device manager rightclick "My computer" and select properties, select the hardware tab and click the device manager button. Doubleclick on the ATI adapter and select the driver tab to check the driver version.

You could also download Lenovo System Update 3.14 (4.0 is for Win 7 only) and use that tool to download and install the drivers. It's easier and faster compared to download and install manually.

Unable to use external display native resolution

Dear all,
Here is the current setup I'm using :
MacbookPro 15", hi res, Mid 2010 with Mac OS 10.6.6, software up-to-date
Apple MiniDisplayPort to VGA Adapter Firmware 1.03
IIYAMA Prolite E2607WSD, a 26" monitor with native resolution of 1920x1200 @ 60Hz
When connecting the MiniDisplayPort to VGA adapter to the VGA cable, the MBP doesn't enable me to set the external native monitor resolution of 1920x1200 with extended desktop. The maximum available resolution the macbookpro is able to diaply is 1920x1080.
What I tried :
-using high performance graphics in the energy saver settings
-using clamshell mode
-using mirroring mode
-reset PRAM
-reset SCM
-delete com.windowserver.plist
-use SwitchResX.app and DisplayConfigX.app to force the native resolution
To make sure that the monitor was correctly behaving, I tried with a PC with WinXP, and I was able to get max resolution of 1920x1200 without an issue. I also tried with a Macbook 2008 with 10.5.6, and with it's own DisplayPort to VGA adapter (the "normal size" one, not the "mini" one I'm using with the MBP), and it worked as well with the native resolution of 1920x1200.
I 'm coming to the conclusion that either the minidisplayport to vga adapter doesn't accept any resolution higher than 1920x1080 or that the one I bought from Apple is not properly working, or that I should use the minidisplay port to DVI adapter (no HDMI here as an input for the monitor)...
I also browsed the forum and found a lot of similar issues, so I guess it's pretty common, but no workaround seems possible.
Does anybody in the community had the same issue and know how to solve it ?

I actually tried to get the EDID information and to replicate them as much as possible but everytime I tried a custom resolution, after reboot, SRX will say " the system didn't accept this setup"... and the proper resolution is not available..

Removing English IME while keeping Windows Displaying Language as English?

Until Windows 7, Windows Displaying Language (WDL) and IMEs were independent. It was possible to set the WDL to English and use only Japanese IME. From Windows 8, they seem to be combined. If I set WDL to English, I cannot find a way to remove English
IME.
Many foreign IMEs contain "English" mode. For example, the Japanese IME has direct input mode, and the Korean IME has English mode. So, English IME is not necessary, if you are using those IMEs. Having English IME is annoying because it adds another
complexity when you switch the IME using Shift+Alt or Windows + Space.
Is there any hack to remove the English IME while keeping WDL as English?

Yes, this is by design on Windows 8.1. Unless you add another input method for this language package, it cannot be removed. It would keep one input method for this language package at least.
So far there is no any other method to remove IME and keep display language.

30 inch Apple Cinema Display-system prefs not showing native resolutions

The 30 inch Apple Cinema Display, seems to be working fine with the mac pro, but when I try to hook up the 2009 mini, the display preferences do not show the mini's native resolution of 1920x1200. The maximum it shows is 1280x800, and only gives a few other choices. This mini had once been attached to a TV monitor, so I am wondering if that has something to do with the lack of choices in the system preferences. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the system preferences to display the correct info so that I can adjust the resolution ?

Being compatible with the 24-inch Cinema Display and being able to use it at resolutions higher than 1280 by 800 doesn't necessarily mean that it can drive the 30-inch Cinema Display at its full resolution. You need to use a dual-link DVI connection as stated above.

Portege Z30-A-18M - cannot set native resolution on external display

Hi,
I have tried to connect two different full HD displays to my Portege Z30-A-18M and I was unable to set the native resolution - maximal resolution that I can set for those is 1680x1050... I wasn't so surprised with the first one as I had some troubles with native resolution when I was connecting it to the Satellite laptop that I had before. But then the same happened when I tried the other display.
I thought that this laptop can handle higher external resolution... Is there a way how to force the native resolution for the external diplays in Windows 7?

Well, I wanted to use it as extended desktop... But I tried now to set it only to external device and I am still getting 1680x1050 as max
Just a note, the first display was connected with analog (D-SUB) and the second with digital (HDMI) ...

39L1350U doesn't display in native resolution on HDMI input from PC

Hello all,
My 39L1350U won't use its native resolution (dot by dot) when I'm connecting a PC to its HDMI inputs. The PC is outputting a true 1920x1080 resolution, which the TV recognizes. For every picture size option, the image is either shrunk, with a black border around it (not filling screen), or it shows a zoomed in picture which does fill the screen, but cuts off the edges of the image.
If I connect my PC to the TV using the VGA input, one of the options is "dot by dot" which actually uses the native resolution and fills the screen, but of course it doesn't look as crisp as an HDMI input.
I've tried every option I can find in the TV menu, including resetting to factory defaults and flashing the latest firmware, but still nothing. Anybody have any ideas?

Tty terminals not native resolution

I have a funny issue with Arch and the NVIDIA proprietary driver (which I do want to keep using). The tty terminals (Ctrl-Alt-F2) and such don't display at native resolution as they did under the Nouveau driver. Is this just inherent to the NVIDIA driver, or is there some setting to be changed?

Yes, this is how it is with nvidia proprietary drivers - they don't support KMS, while nouveau does.
