Cloning from new Mac Pro to older G4 laptop?

Hi - I am going to be upgrading my old Quicksilver G4 tower to a new Mac Pro (the 2.66 quad core) and was wondering if I would still be able to clone (using SuperDuper!) my system hard drive to my Apple PowerBook G4 1.25 15" which I use as my main computer when going on the road. This has been my main workflow and has worked quite nicely as I then clone back to my tower once I get back home.
Just not sure if the two systems would be able to function together using the same OS and software.
thanks!

Since the clone is for an Intel-based computer and the G4 is a PPC, the cloned system would not even boot on the PPC. The PPC and Intel versions of Leopard are entirely separate and very different.
thanks!

  • Uninstall Leopard from new Mac Pro

Got a brand spankin new Mac Pro at work which was thrilling until it became obvious that nothing works with Leopard (which is what came on the Mac). Too many of our vital apps won't work with Leopard (read Adobe CS2) and the boss isn't prepared to update everything to be compatible with Leopard, plus it's not even possible to update some of them.
So what is the least painful way to get Tiger on this computer?
We don't own an external drive.

    Hello,
Unless you have a copy of Tiger for Intel, you cannot do it. The "off the shelf" version of tiger is for the PowerPC. If you can get ahold of a Mac Pro Tiger reinstall DVD set, then you could try to do an erase and install of tiger. I am not sure if you are going to see any issues or not with Tiger on the new hardware. I would guess not, but you never know.
Ebay might be a good place to look for a mac pro reinstall dvd.
Just pop in the dvd, press and hold "C" before the computer chimes and it should boot to the CD, after that it is as easy as apple.

  • Transferring photos from new Macbook Pro to older laptop

My new MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt and 800 Firewire and I need to back up 26 GB of photos to an older laptop MacBook with Firewire 400.  I dont want to do it over the network which is too slow for this much info.  Any suggestions?

I do this kind of thing quite a bit, and it all depends on what kind of storage options that are available.
    1. I have several pen drives, a few 16gb in storage, that I use to transfer data from one computer to another. If you have 26gb of music, the transfer should't be too long.
    2. I also own a few Seagate portable drives, which are great for transferring data. It's also fairly fast. I use a USB to USB2 cable to do the transfer; my cable came with the drive.
One easy way to figure out which cable you need would be to visit your Apple Store; they should be able to tell which cable to purchase.

  • Adobe 11 won't update on either my Mac Book Pro or new Mac Pro (both Mavericks)

Trying to update Adobe After Effects on both my new Mac Pro and older Mac Book Pro. Both running Mavericks 10.9.4.
Oddly, After Effects 11.0 runs on my Mac Book, but won't open at all on the new Mac Pro.  When I try to update to 11.0.2, in both cases it says "Update Failed. ....This update does not apply to you."
    What else can I try?

I am currently also having the same issue with After Effects on my macbook pro and I am trying to install 11.0.4, but I keep getting an error.
My software is student and teacher license, which I got the fall of 2012. This is the only adobe program that will not open on my computer and every time I open adobe bridge and look at update it says the programs are up to date.
I also have tired uninstalling the after effects I currently have  on my computer but it won't let me do that either.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

I  have a new Mac Pro computer and have migrated my files from my older computer to the new computer. In trying to open a Lightroom catalog on an external hard drive  I keep on getting the message "lightroom cannot use the catalog named " " because it is  not writable and cannot be opened. I have fixed all the "permissions" and yet it will still not open. How do I fix this?

    Hello Forum Members,
I figured it out. You have to select  the actual logo of the Lightroom catalog and then click on  "get info" and allow what ever your new user name to "read and write". That worked!

  • RAM PREVIEW VERY SLOW (FAR FROM REAL TIME) ON NEW MAC PRO

    Good afternoon
I have the new mac pro with 8 cores, 64 Gb of Ram and dual AMD 700 graphic card, but the preview on After effects is slower than in the old mac pro (from 2010). I have set the preferences as told in your website and everything stills the same. Could you please advice? is very frustrating to see that a new machine works worse than the older one.
    thanks

  • Can I put an older OS (Leopard) on a new Mac Pro?

We have an XSAN environment that is still using G5 servers and has some G5 workstations. One of the G5 workstations has just died and we need to replace it, however, the new computer will surely come with Snow Leopard on it which is not compatible with the G5 servers. Documentation indicates that you shouldn't clients that are running later OS versions than what the XSAN servers are running. I'm told that Apple does something to new Mac Pro's (any Mac for that matter) that make it so that I can't install an older OS on it than what shipped with it. Is that TRUE?

Every machine has an ID code to tell Apple what type it is, so they COULD use that to prevent you from loading an older OS. But why should they go to the trouble? The primary reason they require the same OS that it was delivered with or later is that Apple makes hardware changes or adds peripherals later that aren't supported by earlier releases.
Instead of going to the extra work of developing drivers for new hardware compatible with an older OS, Apple devotes their time to making a new OS release compatible with older hardware. I think that's a bigger benefit for most of us.
If you have to run old software that simply won't run on a newer machine, you will have to make sure you maintain your old hardware and don't update it. We keep an old machine around to run an old version of Quark. But we wouldn't want our business to rely on the whole company doing that.

  • BRAND NEW Mac Pro won't boot from Leopard DVD, kernel panics!

I just received my brand new Mac Pro today. It's a BTO machine with the upgrade to the NVIDIA 8800GT, a second optical drive and a Mac OS X Server license. The system has Mac OS X server installed on the default 320GB drive. I decided to use the server license as a virtual machine running in Leopard client. So, I installed 2 new 500GB Seagate 7200.11 (Retail) drives in the machine, zeroed them out in prep for installing Leopard client.
At this point, I pop in a freshly-purchased retail copy of the Leopard DVD and restart. When I try to boot from the DVD and install Leopard to one of the new Seagate drives, I get kernel panics - need to restart the machine. Also tried booting from the Mac OS X Server DVD and this too only caused kernel panics. The DVD's read perfectly from within Mac OS X Server and boot from hard disks is flawless.
I spent an hour on the phone with a level 2 tech at Apple - Tried swapping out the RAM and moving around the DIMMS to no avail. I am at a loss to what this could be. Seems to be a hardware issue and the tech thought it was likely a problem with one of the memory risers but couldn't send replacements. Anyone else with a similar issue?
This is my first Mac and it looks like this Mac Pro is going back for an exchange and I'll have to wait yet another 10-12 days for a replacement to arrive. Bummer.
Am I missing something simple here? Does this seem to be a hardware issue?
If anyone has any ideas before I ship this one back, please write!!!

New Mac Pros will not install the Leopard retail disc. They will only install the Leopard disc which shipped with them labeled Mac Pro. That has always been true. Macs can only boot the system that ships on DVD in the box that came with them, and newer retail releases. They can never boot from an older retail release than what shipped in the box.

  • I bought a new Mac Pro from an Apple store, it was sold as factory sealed, but it's reconditioned - it has some strangers entire photo, library from 2003 to 2011 in the trash bin.

. I bought a new Mac Pro from an Apple store 2 days ok, it was sold as factory sealed, but it's reconditioned - it has some strangers entire photo, library from 2003 to 2011 in the trash bin.
I was bought a Mac book pro as a birthday gift from the Apple Store in Leicester, after completing the initial set up procedure, I noticed that  the trash bin was full of some one's entire photo collection from 2003 to 2011.
This is entirely unacceptable for Apple: How long have Apple been fobbing of consumers who believe they were genuinely purchasing a 'new' Mac book?
How is it that I have someones entire photo collection on my 'branch new Mac Book Pro' - these photos included wedding photo's, birthday celebrations, family celebrations and children. Its a serious breach of data protection, it's an invasion of some poor persons privacy and private photo collection. What concerns me the most, is what could have happened if those photo's had fallen into the wrong hands. We managed to trace, locate and contact the person who the photo's belong to within 10 mins using information taken from their wedding album.
Understandably these people are also very distressed that their personal photos are on my brand new Mac Book pro.
I would like details of who to contact in regards this incident.

  • Wake From Sleep Reboots New Mac Pro 2.8 GHz 8-core 10.5.2

Add me to list of users with this problem.
    I bought NEW computer yesterday.
    Mac Pro 2.8 GHz 8-core 10.5.2
    ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Yesterday, I ZeroWrote the OEM Apple hard drive and Installed 10.5.1 from OEM Install disks -- ran all updaters, repaired permissions numerous times during build.
Only 2gb OEM Apple RAM installed
Added on (from original installers): CS3, Office 2008, Toast 8.03, Stuffit 12.01, Silverfast AI 6.5x (Epson 4990). It appeared to be waking properly during the build.
Last night, last Software Update updater ran was ATI RADEON HD 2600 XT Firmware UPC 1.0.
This morning, wake from sleep rebooted machine.
Apple had me disconnect all cables, including power cable for a minute and then plug back in.
This worked for a couple few minute sleeps, but after lunch it rebooted again waking it from sleep.

I got my 8-core StartUp Disk deselected and have had only one auto reboot when waking from sleep.
HOWEVER, now I have heavy vertical bands twice now when it wakes up my 30" Cinema Display:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6919620#6919620
It had wide vertical banding, white edges in corners and edges, and white fog over entire screen that seemed burned into the screen -- it eventually corrected itself back to normal after being on over a couple hours.
Second time, I had wide vertical banding, 6" and 3" wide with rows of white, green, blue pixels.
I connected the 30" to the old Mac Pro -- 10.4.11 -- AND THE BANDING GRAINY SCREEN APPEARED CONNECTED TO THE OTHER MAC like it was burned in the LCD.
So it appears the banding is in the monitor the monitor.
The burn-in cleared itself after being on about 120 minutes.
*It seems the new Mac Pros have some devilish issues with sleep on their Apple Cinema Displays to the point it is destroying the monitors -- or it is coincidence...*

  • When watching my Apple TV (3rd gen) the picture jumps a few frame every few seconds, this happens when I rent a film or play back from my new Mac Pro, my Wifi is the Airport Express.

These may be different issues, but lets look at rentals first.
Poor motion can result from mismatched output. If your source is 24 or 30 fps you should set the output of the Apple TV to 60 Hz, for 25 fps content use 50 Hz.
Additionally motion software on the TV itself can cause the picture to jump, check your TV settings and turn off any motion settings in use,

Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant do not restore MS Windows, it only does the OS X partition. All of your Windows stuff must be backed up and restore using a MS Windows application. If no one on this forum is able to answer your question then I'd repost it on a Parallels forum to see how other Windows users approach this.

Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode
Hello, I am having problems migrating data from my old PC running XP (SP3) to my new Mac Pro 2012 using the Migration Assistant.
    - I downloaded and installed the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple
    - My Mac recognized PC and displays passcode
    - The sasscode does not show / display on my PC
    - My Mac is then stuck in "authenticating" loop and the PC is stuck "waiting for Mac to connect."
    - Both computers are connected on same network (have connected PC on WIFI and using ethernet to Reuter)
I have looked on support site and only response I saw says to reinstall Windows Migration Assistant (which I have done)
Any ideas?  If cant get this to workare there instructions for manually bring across relevant data eg itunes music and apps, photos, picasa data etc?

Why not turn off the Windows firewall and uninstall any other firewall software you have installed?
If you are using a Norton product uninstall it and discard it. To fully unistall most Norton products you have to go to the Norton website and download a soecial program to completely get rid of it. The normal uninstall feature built into the program will not remove all of it.
