Cloning / Libraries

I have cloned one of my 10.3.2 managed servers. Any clue as to why these don't clone the libraires that are bound to the original? Absolutely a poor design as now I have to bind all 130+ libraries by hand. Anyone know of a way to assign all libraries to a newly cloned (or created) server through the console? I had a bad experience hacking the config.xml more than once and had to recreate the domain so I really don't want to do it that way if I can help it.
Thanks

I guess that's a 'no'....

  • Managing a cloned Aperture library

    Hello all,
I'm working with a referenced library system on my laptop and I make incremental backups of my OS using Carbon Copy Cloner.
I have just realised that the cloned libraries are copying all the new info but do not take account of deletions I have done in Aperture i.e. they are much bigger than the library on my laptop.
I always plan to have all my projects in the Aperture library. From time to time I will relocate referenced images on my internal HD to one of the externals so as to free up space. But that is the only deleting I would do. If I ever want to remove a project then I would export it and save this exported project to both of my externals.
Bearing in mind the above, is there any danger if I change the cloning options of the library to 'delete any items which do not exist on the source'?
    Ross

    Hi Chez
The following might work for you...
    1) Right-click on the cloned Library file on your external drive.
    2) Choose Compress "Aperture Library". This will produce a compressed version of the Library in a zip file.
(I did this on my iMac at the weekend before carrying out my Aperture 3.1 upgrade. Just under 6000 referenced images have my ApLib file at 8.8GB. The zipped file is 6.5 GB and took somewhere between 45 minutes to an hour to complete compressing. Your iMac has a more powerful processor, but your library file is a bit bigger. You're probably looking at about an hour to an hour and a half. NB you'll require enough free space on your external drive to accomodate the new compressed file, which will probably be about 12GB or so, if mine was anything to go by. Ideally you'll have a lot more free.)
    3) Drag the zip file back over to your Pictures folder. (This should go a heck of a lot faster than dragging the library itself ever would. That's because you'll be dragging a single huge file, rather than a hundred thousand small files - there's less overhead.)
    4) Rename your broken Library file. (You might just want to keep it around until you're back up and running again.)
    5) Double-click the zip file - it will decompress and create a replacement "Aperture Library" file. (That's why you rename the old one.)
    6) Launch Aperture and run the maintenance described below. You'll definitely want to repair Permissions on the library - and that might be enough to solve your problems. If not, step up to the Repair Database step. If that's not enough, go the whole way and try the Rebuild Database.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
All being well, you'll be back up and running after that. All told, you're probably talking about a couple of hours - and much of that is just kicking things off and letting them run in the background. If you follow these steps and it fails, you'll still have your cloned copy intact on the external drive.
    Good luck!

  • Meta Data is very sensitive , Yes ? or No !

Hi , for some reason the answer to the question of what occasionally
happens to the meta data when moving from library to library appears
to be rather obscure with the fix it all shoulder shrug of - corrupted files
taking the place of a sure footed recovery . My iTunes coasted along nicely
for at least two years and now seems stuck back to the 2005 Library info
. I would entertain just about any suggestion at this point to recover the
more recent library as it is a bit complicated to reintegrate the massive
load of information . I just cloned libraries and switched discs to open
space on my operating disc . Successful for a long time , now pretty awful .
Any ideas how to recover the data ? Thanks , Frederick

    Hi,
These are the symbolic links which are not copied or not exist in the clone system as the paths of source and clone system is diff
recreate the symbolic links using the correct paths after u copy the filesystem to target.
1)use below command to list the links in source and compare it with copied filesystem on target
    #find . -type l -print | wc -l
remove wc -l to get the file names and paths
2)delete the link using rm -rf command ,before doing that take note what are links and were they are pointing
3)create new link using below sysntax
    # ln -s /ebiz1/PATCHAPP/apps/tech_st/10.1.2/webcache/bin/webcachectl webcachectl ( webcachectl is the link to /ebiz1/PATCHAPP/apps/tech_st/10.1.2/webcache/bin/webcachectl)
after u do the above steps then run postclone
    hope u got it

  • Mac Pro 8 core with boot drive cloned from MacBook Pro

I bought a Mac Pro 8 core and in order to avoid having to reinstall all my stuff, I cloned my OSx (tiger 10.49) partition from my MacBook Pro running vista (installed via bootcamp) to my new MacPro's startup disk. The disk works fine except that the MacPro will not boot to osx unless I use the option key and choose the OSX partition. If i just turn the machine on it doesen't find anything. I think it is looking for windows. What do you think?????
Also, if i restart from the os x partition on my mac pro it stops just before the lound bong sound and seems to be looking for the dvd drive. Any ideas??

Well, I've covered this extensively here:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.
Additional links that will be helpful to new Intel-Mac users:

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
    1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
    4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to another forum user for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

Not knowing what you did when you migrated from your PB to the MBP, I can't really comment, but it's quite possible it didn't go as well as you think. Numerous users who migrated from PPC Macs to Intel Macs ended up with an Intel Mac that didn't work properly because Intel coded components had been replaced by PPC coded components.

  • HT202213 how to sync an ipad with two libraries

How do I share my itunes library between 2 devices?  Dragging the music over to the device isn't doing the trick...

Not quite sure this is what you are after, if not you'll need to explain further.
    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entires and import the local content you have on that box.

    Hi Ark,
Have a look at the file $ORACLE_HOME/lib/stubs/libc.so (8.0.6 Home)
This is a text file containing the location of the stub libraries for the 8.0.6 Home. This location may have changed from the original env to the cloned environment, and is not updated by Rapidclone.
After changing to the correct location, see if you can relink the application binaries using Adadmin.
    Hope that helps
    Bruno.

  • Can't import/merge libraries

I have been having this problem for a long time and I am just about to give up on trying to solve it!
Ultimately - I can't merge two libraries. The process gets underway but only ever seems to get to about 80 or 90% (according to the status bar) and then goes no further.
Some more detail - My ideal workflow is to have multiple identical aperture libraries in different locations. One library (approx 16,000 managed images, 50GB) on a portable hard disk, then several others (identical) on different machines (Mac Pro at work, iMac and Mac Mini at home etc). I would then download new photos in to any of my libraries, and then import (File > Import > Library/Project > Merge) that whole library in to the others so that I maintain identical libraries. Sounds simple, and according to what Aperture should be able to do (as I understand it) it should be simple. But when I set the import process going, it just doesn't work.
For example - I recently added 60 new photos in 3 separate projects to my library on my portable disk. No problems. I then try to import that library in to any of my other libraries - The process begins and I can see the 3 new events are created (imported) in to the library, but the process never finishes. I have left it running overnight or longer (close to 24 hours) and the progress bar says 'Merging Library…' but doesn't get past about 80 or 90%. Aperture does not hang - so I am able to quit (not force quit). When I relaunch it, the 3 new projects are there but are empty - there is no sign of the 60 new photos anywhere. Funnily though, when I delete the 3 empty projects, it says there are now 60 items in the trash - but no sign of anything in there.
I'm assuming there is a 'glitch' somewhere in the database that is causing this… I have done a repair/rebuild on each my libraries multiple times but without success.
    Notes
all of my libraries are created as new (ie File > Switch to library > other/new > create new) or created by exporting all projects/folders/albums etc in entire existing library to a new library.
I have tried importing/merging on several different machines (Mac Pro, iMac, Mac Mini, Macbook Pro) but have had the same (failed) results regardless.
If I export new items as a separate library (eg the 60 photos in three projects from my previous example), I can then import them successfully in to the other libraries - but this is not ideal as I often make changes to the rest of my library (eg adjustments, keywords etc) which I would like to keep in sync over my multiple libraries.
Perhaps I just need to start over with a brand new library, but if that is the case, how do I get all of my projects/albums/masters/versions along with faces/places/metadata/adjustments/keywords etc etc in to a new library without copying across the 'glitch' in the database of my existing library as well?
Apologies for the long and rambling nature of this post, but I've tried to get all necessary info in here!
I am running the latest versions of Aperture and Snow Leopard

It all seems to be getting quite complex for what hoped would be a reasonably easy workflow!
It's an "easy" idea -- have four Libraries on four machines and keep them in sync -- but a very hard practice, both technically and behaviorally.
I agree with Tony Gay -- I would find it _much_ less fuss to keep my Library on a dedicated FW800 drive (7200 rpm, large cache) and keep it with me, than to remember where I worked last and which machine/location has the most recent Versions and which machine/locations have which other Versions, worked on when and where ... .
Another alternative -- not inexpensive -- is to dedicate a laptop to Aperture.  I work regularly in three locations, and keep good big second monitors at two of them.
If you insist on keeping your general set-up, you might try making a large more-or-less "archive" Library and cloning it to each location, and also making a much smaller "working" Library of current work.  You could sync this smaller Library the way you currently are, and then periodically merge it back to the "archive" Library at each location.  Fwiw, I still don't think this is a work-able long-term set-up.

WIthout a backup of your data previously, they are all gone.
The only option you have now is data recovery.
You need to purchase, download, install and use a data recovery app like this.
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
You need to completely stop using your computer ASAP, at this point and just run the data recovery app and let it do its thing.
Every moment that you keep regularly using your computer risks rewriting new data in the locations where your deleted data may still reside.
A very expensive and time consuming lesson to be learned here.
Purchase and connect up a large capacity external hard drive (a drive larger than your Mac's internal hard drive) preferably a hard drive that uses FireWire 400/800 connection and use a data cloning app like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make yourself a exact, bootable copy of your Mac's internal drive to the new external hard drive.
This will be your data backup drive.

  • Forms not opening after cloning ebs 12.1.3

    Hello,
I just finished hot cloning ebs 12.1.3 on Linux 6.3. All went well and the I can log into the apps as sysadmin but no form can open. For example, I wanted to get in and change the Site Name: log in to E-Business Home Page -> System Administrator -> Profile -> System but the expected form would not pop up. What am I missing?
    Thanks

  • Want to save files, documents, bookmarks, iTunes and iPhoto libraries, each in separate folders to external hard drive prior to full sweep and overwrite for the purpose of full sweep of Macbook?

Never done this before and cannot find a manual for OS X 10.7.5 Lion. Basically I want to clean my 2009 Macbook6,1 as though I were selling it and start out fresh but before I attempt it I want to stash my contents (Files, Documents, Bookmarks, iTunes and iPhoto libraries to my external Hard Drive, all in separate folders to return them to Macbook after the full sweep and big overwrite. Can anyone help me?

That may not be the best approach (see below).
Format the drive for a Mac (see #1 in Using Disk Utility if you're not sure how).
Create the folders you want on it.
Open a second Finder window and drag what you want from one to the other.
If you only copy the stuff listed, you'll lose your AddressBook, Mail, Calendars, preferences, and probably all sorts of other things.
A better option might be to back up your entire system, either with Time Machine or one of the "cloning" apps.  Then you can restore selectively from TM, or copy selectively from the clone.

  • Hard Drive Kaput, but I cloned my G5

My Hard Drive went west last week. Luckily I cloned it onto my LaCie. Any tips please on reloading libraries such as itunes, mail address book, firefox bookmarks etc.

Well at least you have a backup. You can clone things back to the new hard drive (booting from the clone) or install the new hard drive, install on it and then boot from the clone and use the Migration Assistant (/Applications/Utilities/Migration Assistant).

    sandrar:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The best of the lot as Terence pointed out is Photoshop Elements for Mac. Adobe just announced that a new version, 6, will be released in March. It has about 80% of Photoshop's capabilities at 1/7 the cost. If you need it sooner than March you might find a previous copy on eBay for very little and then upgrade in March.
It can do the cloning that you mention and much more like adding text to a photo.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
