Cloning of production Database to Development

We are planning to clone the development box same as the production box.
After the cloning, do we have to change any setting or values or take care of any data dependencies?
We are using Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB).

metalink note id 434272.1 details what you have to do to update the service and metadata after cloning a 10.2 or 11g OWB installation, you can hack the node configuration directly but its better to use the supported scripts, I have had to drop and recreate locations occasionally

  • Cloning a production OIM to Development

    Hi All,
How would one go about cloning a production OIM to Development.
we run MS-SQL Server if that makes a difference.
    Thanx
    Fred

After completing the base installation of OIM I took an export of the OIM schema.
We did some configurations, ran into some issues and wanted to revert to the original schema.
    I did the following
./opmnctl stopall to stop all AS activity
    drop user OIM cascade;
created user OIM (same password, same privileges)
    imported the export
Checked with XIMDD to verify database connectivity.
However, when I try an login to xlWebApp I get the following error

  • Cloning Of Production Database

    Hi,
I have a production database on 8.1.6 which I need to upgrade to 10gR2. The upgrade path will be 8.1.6>8.1.7>10gR2.
Now as the testing and development will not be done on the production database, there is a separate test and development machine without any of the Oracle version installed.
I want to avoid export/import and as I have been suggested, the only other means is Cloning.
Can somebody give me a bigger picture as to how can I restore or use the clone image to create a 8.1.6 copy on the test machine?
    Thanks.
    Rajeev

    Hi,
The easiest way to do that would IMO to use RMAN's DUPLICATE statement. There's a sample at the end of the linked doc.
This doc is for 9i, but IIRC this should work all the same in 8i RMAN, as far as the CLONE statment was deprecated in... 8.0 ?

  • Compiling against developer database, running against production database??

    Hello :-)
In our company we have a developer- , a test- and a production database, like most of us, I think... :-)
In former times it was usual to compile forms against the database, that they are running against. But nowadays this is because of new security rules very difficult. Developers have all rights on the developer database, a few on test and nearly none on the production database and even our DBA is (officially) not allowed to use/know the sys password.
The developer and the production database are very similar (both 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - 64bit, Linux), but not totally equal. Of course there are differences in database objects, because it's the developer database, there could be differences in installed patches, and the production database consists of 4 Clusters, the developer database not.
Is it enough to compile the forms (6i and also 10g) against the developer database and run the compiled forms against the production database or should we compile the forms, that go in production, strictly against the production database, which is a bit difficult because of our security rules???
    Regards,
    Udo

    Hello, Francois!
Thanks for your answer, but that was not exactly what I meant...
What you describe is, how it should be :-)
We develop, deliver the forms and scripts and "someone" compiles them against the production database.
But our problem is that it would be a lot of "paperwork"(?) each time(!) to get the authorization to get the required rights on the production database to compile all objects.
We have no "production team" that has all these rights and are not allowed to do so...
So I just want to have your experiences, if it is enough to compile against the developer database???
I have made the experience that probably 98-99% works fine, but sometimes there are strange things happening (like not passing variables from one form to another, when a form is compiled against the developer database and the attached library for example is compiled against the production database)...
    Regards,
    Udo

  • Applying patch to production databases

    Hello,
If I had 5 production 9i databases and 1 development 9i database and I need to do patches on the production databases. Can I patch the one 9i development database and then from development database rsync the ORACLE_HOME to the 5 production databases?
Or do I repeat the patch process on each production database?
What is the process for patching exact verion of 5 or more production databases?

    >>I had 5 production 9i databases and 1 development 9i database and I need to do patches on the production databases. Can I patch the one 9i development database and then from development database rsync the ORACLE_HOME to the 5 production databases?
You will need to install the patches on every server seprately even its on same OS.because u need to run a patch script after installing the software.and no software cloning is supported by oracle till 9i.

  • Adding new column to production database

I have to add a new timestamp column, that defaults to the current date/time, to an existing production database. The table is large - 150M records. I am trying to understand the ramifications of adding a new column to a table this large that gets hit often, mostly with inserts and reads. The column does allow null values and I am not going back and populating existing records with a value. Basically, I am looking for some best practice guidelines - how to prepare, what to expect, what other processes should be followed along with this schema update.

    Radiators wrote:
Thanks, I have not found any %TYPE or %ROWTYPE dependencies on the table I am altering. But at the same time I do not understand how these types of dependencies would invalidate packages. I wouldn't be breaking any %TYPE dependency because I am not dropping columns, only adding a new one. And according to documentation for %ROWTYPE - "If columns are later added to or dropped from the table, your code can keep working without changes." Can you point me to Oracle documentation that describes your concern in detail? Thanks.you can test it yourself

SQL> you should also consider the chance that some where if people are using "select * into" using this table, which will fail since you added new column. i don't see any unusual performance bottlenecks by adding a new column. in case of the backups, yes the earlier backups will not have the column. if you restore it, you will see earlier table structure itself. i have one specific question. why are you not attempting this in development/test environment first? even if it is a simple insert, it's always important to do it in test environments before attempting on production db. one thing for sure i know is, after adding column, you will have to recompile all the invalid dependencies. i think, it's better if you attempt it in test db and come up with any issues you see rather than asking a general question where problematic scenarios are plenty and rarely unknown before hand.

There are others here far more competant in this area than me. That said, there are other forums here too that are a better fit for this type of question. However, that said, there are well developed architectures for this sort of thing. I should check also Sun's main dev site for links, the DB vendors site for links and forums, and web search for "web to database security" ... • Production database administration

What is the difference between development DBA and production DBA? Will the junior/mid level DBAs be involved in production database administration?

You can't say DEV DBA or production DBA. The word should be development environment and production environment.
Development environment- This environment is used for testing purpose for the company. In this environment developer can change/alter/deploy their code as necessary. They can change any object for the business requirements and test. If the test is successful they can apply it to the production database.
Production environment - This is the live environment for the company which is critical for business. No testing should be applied in the production environment.
Yes any junior DBA can administration the production database but in a limited domain. He/She must be guide by a senior DBA.

  • Dbconsole is not running of a colon production database oracle 10g R2

    Dear all
I have clone my production database on a testdb machine. database is fine and working but dbconsole is not working.
    Plz Help me.
    Thanks

EM will stop working if either the IP address or the hostname changes, in your case, since you have performed a cloning operation to a test host, both have changed. So you will have to rebuild and reconfigure your console.
Make sure the target host has a fixed IP Address, and issue these commands:
    export oracle_sid=YourInstanceName
    emctl stop dbconsole
    emca -deconfig dbcontrol db
    emca -repos recreate
    emca -config dbcontrol db

  • Refreshed Data from production Database

    Hi,
I have a remote production database.I want to refresh my development database.
Only new inserted data should be refreshed after a certain time period not all
    data.
    Thanks.
    Pankaj Gupta

    Another strand of thought occurs:
By "development database" do you mean a database actually used by developers? If so, I think this is a misguided idea, because
    (1) production volumes are usually not appropriate for development purposes (load testing ought to be a separate instance)
    (2) production data is unlikely to have the necessary breadth and depth of cases necesaary to run proper unit tests.
    (3) you don't say what your business is, but there are likely to be security/privacy/accountability issues with making real data available to developers.
    Cheers, APC

  • OAS database as oracle production database

    hi
can i use oracle 10g application server database to store my data, like i hv developed inventory application and i want store in same database , or do i need to install OLAP production database?
what is diff oas database and oracle database ?
    thanks
    santosh

For performance reasons and to allow indirection and seperation, you really need to seperate the OLAP database from the AS infrastructure. Therefore to answer your question you need a an OLAP oracle instance for your application data and another instance for your AS infrastructure. Ideally these will be on a seperate box.
However is not uncommon to create an oracle instance, and within this, you have a couple of database one for OAS and another for OLAP and this is a valid topology. You have to do some prep work on the oracle database to ready it for IAS.

  • Oracle 11g 64 bit on Linux - Restore failure in production database

    Hi guru,
We used to take full hot backup with the help of BackupExec of Symantec in our production database. We have two different oracle database (not cluster).
We defined same policy for both .We defined schedule on Symantec to take full hot backup every night of database on tap drive. At any point of time we maintain only 2 full backup for each database on tap and then recycle it.
Yesterday suddenly storage of database failed for both.?It was complete failure so we did not have any option but to restore last night full backup.
It has done successfully for one database but when we tried to restore second from last night backup it thrown error :
channel ch0: ORA-19870: error while restoring backup piece BE_9kjsfol6_1_1
ORA-19507: failed to retrieve sequential file, handle="BE_9kjsfol6_1_1", parms=""
    ORA-27029: skgfrtrv: sbtrestore returned error
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text
then we tried to restore backup of last to last night and it gave again error :
channel ch0: ORA-19870: error while restoring backup piece BE_9djsaman_1_1
ORA-19507: failed to retrieve sequential file, handle="BE_9djsaman_1_1", parms=""
    ORA-27029: skgfrtrv: sbtrestore returned error
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text
But we have seen log of Symantec at the time of backup and it said that backup has successfully completed.
right now I am in big trouble I tried almost all possible combination of symantec to restore database but got no success.I used script generated by symantec and tried to run that on RMAN directly but it is throwing same error.
Please help me if possible an throw some light on exception (as I understand it says it is not able to find some piece on tap but we have not touched tap and tap media is completely safe.)
I am pasting complete text log generated by Symantec at the time of restore attempt:
