Cloning Original HD - Mac Pro 3,1; 10.6.8 (Early 2008), New GC, New 16GB RAM...
Thanks to the advise of knowledgeable folks in here I went ahead and purchased a new GC (NVidia GForce 8800) and 16 GB of RAM from Amazon for my early 2008 Mac Pro. Everything is going great but as I keep on looking ahead, I keep reading it's also wise to clone my original startup HD. This is something totally new for me so if you could spare a few minutes, please advise on such move. (best hd to buy for the job, software and also, please, best practices and a simple stpe-by-step 'sorta' thing to follow). Thanks a million!
Just go out, download and buy a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner. Read the help and visit its site home page.
Carbon Copy Cloner is an essential utility from Bombich Software Inc. that offers reliable backup, restore, cloning and integrity-checking capabilities for the Mac. Features include bootable backup clones, network and disk image support, incremental backups (with optional archiving), scheduling, built-in help/guidance, graceful handling of I/O errors, and much more. The latest version features an all-new user interface, task history, editing of scheduled tasks, task-chaining for creating more complicated backup schemes, a menubar interface, OS X 10.10 Yosemite compatibility and more. Carbon Copy Cloner 4 is priced at $39.95 for OS X 10.8 and up, with a 30-day trial and discounts for current owners: a free upgrade for purchases after June 1 and a 50% discount for other CCC 3 owners. (Version 3.5.7 is available for Mac OS X 10.6 and OS X 10.7.)
Also there is SuperDuper with an excellent built in pdf help manual and free to try out both.
Bootable backup. Dumps the volume to another volume and makes an exact copy. Can also be used for archiving.
Keep a couple. One 'original' and one that is current. Never install updates or changes without making sure you have a clone.
Your safety net in case of failure or trouble.
Also used to 'move' or copy the system to a new drive, such as an SSD.
Once you look at the program and choose the Source and Destination Target I think just try it and should be self explanatory more than words.

Upgrading original 8core Mac Pro 667 FSB to 1033 & beyond..is it possible?
hey all,
I have an first edition (2007) 2 quad x 3hz (8 core) with 667 and am looking to upgrade its overall performance - is upgrading its FSB possible to accomodate ddr3?
Any other tips to increase performance?
mYou can install 32GB but can your apps use it? is it effective? sounds more like a waste unless you work with huge 3GB CS4 files. Do just enough to get you through another year until Gulftown etc has ironed out and matured. SSDs can be used in any system.
Apple doesn't really list or update customer installable parts from what there was when it first listed - disk size, RAM etc.
A 2009 Apple Special goes for $2199 and slightly better but not by a huge margin - all depends on what apps, what type of return in performance, where an 8-core today though costs more than ever.
A single socket Gulftown processor will go for $1000-1500 and that isn't even Xeon versions. But more efficient.
If you really want or like to upgrade... I'd switch to Windows and invest in one of the X58 based systems. I even find Finder and OS X to feel like it is sluggish and held back and not as well optimized in desktop and applications at this point - just install both on Mac Pro 2009 and see. -
I have my original Power Mac Pro G5 7,3
I have replaced the older Power Mac Pro G5 with a new Mac Pro in 2010, I don't have a know use for the old Mac Pro, any suggestions? Can I sell it? or use it in some creative way, I also have a Macbook Pro which I use while traveling, to keep up on my iPhoto 7 iMovie hobby, I am organizing over 100,000 photos from my family and many travels and am producing both movies for my family and picture books.
Confusing PowerMac 7.3 with Mac Pro (1,1 thru 5,1)
Power = G5 / PowerPC IBM cpus
Mac Pro = Intel Xeon cpus
Check the PowerMac forum for more ideas.

From Mac Pro to Macbook and back, round-trip help (new user)
I've searched a bit, but honestly I'm not sure yet what I'm searching for exactly so please excuse this post if it's been explained previously.
Picked up Aperture a few days ago, reading, learning the tutorials, loving it... I wanted to make sure I'm doing this right from the get-go.
I made a new project with an album and book inside. I've been editing the images and now need to travel with them so I can show my father how his shots are coming along... and also proudly show off what Aperture can do! I need to figure out the best way to transfer these images over to my Macbook, work on them on the road, then when I come back overwrite or sync back to my Mac Pro. (There's no need to continually keep them synced).
Someone willing to point me in the right direction?
Thanks! If it's just a single Project, the easiest is to:
1. Export the Project from your Mac pro.
2. Import the project into Aperture on your MBP.
3. Do all your on-the-road stuff.
4. When you come back, export the Project from the MBP and copy to the Mac pro.
5. Import the project on the Mac pro and delete the 'old' copy of the Project from within Aperture.

Mac Pro (v1.1) won't login after installing new video card
Hello,
I have a Mac Pro from 2006 and after my NVidia 7300GT burned, I bought a Geforce 8800GT to replace my old card. After I installed it to the motherboard following the user manual, I turn on my mac and I get the white screen with the apple logo but it won't login. I left it like that for 30 minutes, then I forced restart and the same thing happens. Does anyone have a clue why this happens and how can it be fixed?
Thank you8800 required 10.5.2 or later (10.5.3 DVD and 10.5.6 DVDs were sold, though now $29 will get you 10.6.3).
No OS earlier than 10.5.2, in addition to there having been two versions of the card, EFI32 (2006-7) and EFI64 (2008+).
my link to ebay doesn't list it now:

If you can wait about a 3 months after 10.8 is released this summer and upon new hardware you should be in excellent shape to have not only a fastest latest machine, but a OS X version that all the bugs have been worked out. Plus the three free months of Apple hand holding while they figure out what they did wrong with the new OS version.
If you need a new machine now you'll have to get what you need obviously, but 10.8 should run on it just fine. However know that Apple tweaks things with more currently sellling hardware first, then later gets to the previous released models.
It's been my guestimation that your good for about two year old hardware with very recent OS X release, three years or older hardware you may want to reconsider sticking with the previous OS X version as your hardware is getting dated and likely has only a year left to go anyway (4 year average), so why bother mucking it up, slowing it down and having to buy all new/updated software and third party hardware because they won't make drivers for your new OS version? -
I am unsure about upgrading the OSX 10.5.8 (9L31a) software on my mac pro (2006-7) model. Would or could I upgrade to snow leopard to enable the new OSX Maverick to work on my unit.
Thank you.A 2007 Mac Pro isn't capable of running Mavericks. The newest OS it can run is Lion 10.7.5; installing it requires going through Snow Leopard or finding a Mac OS X 10.7 install thumbdrive.

If no uninstaller is available, then you will have to use Spotlight to find all items with 'Blackberry' and 'Rim' in the titles. I would also download EasyFind and use that to locate such files. Often it will locate items that Spotlight misses.

A late 2007 Mac Pro (2,1) no longer boots into 64-bit Snow Leopard
In Snow Leopard 10.6.7, my late 2007 Mac Pro (2,1/3.0 GHz/Dual Quad-Core Intel Xeon) no longer seems to be booting into 64-bit mode. I've tried holding down the 6 and 4 keys during startup and even used a Terminal sudo command to force the machine to always boot into 64-bit mode. No matter what I try, an About This Mac>More Info>Software check only reports the following:
64-bit Kernel and Extensions: No
Before I upgraded from Leopard 10.5 to Snow Leopard 10.6, I carefully researched this, and this Mac Pro model specifically was listed by Apple as being capable of 64-bit booting — meaning that it would utilize at least some extra memory. At the time, under OS 10.5 and early versions of 10.6, when I used this Terminal command...
ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
...my Mac Pro 2,1 returned this response:
"firmware-abi" = <"EFI64">
As a result of my tests and research, I upgraded the installed SDRAM from 4MB to the theoretical maximum Apple indicated this model could support (16MB) so that Adobe Photoshop 12 (CS 5) would fully utilize extra installed memory under Snow Leopard. While using the first versions of 10.6 Snow Leopard, the machine worked fine in 64-bit mode. Now, in the wake of the 10.6.6 or the 10.6.7 update (I didn't notice which), I find that this model no longer even reports itself as being 64-bit capable, though it once did.
Now, the aforementioned Terminal query returns this response:
"firmware-abi" = <"EFI32">
Also, the Library>Preferences folder does even not contain a file called "com.apple.boot.plist," which some owners have reported editing to force 64-bit booting.
The thing is, I spent a fair amount of money upgrading this machine to the maximum amount of SDRAM supported. I purchased it because it was advertised as being 64-bit capable and I upgraded it because Apple originally reported it as being a 64-bit model. Now, I'm not sure if the extra memory I added is being fully utilized, though Photoshop does report seeing 15547MB of available memory.
Have any other owners of these second-generation Intel Mac Pro's encountered this? Does anyone know what's going on? Am I doing something wrong when checking for the 64-bit installation or architecture? Is Snow Leopard 10.6.7 mis-reporting the architecture for this model? Or did Apple silently withdraw 64-bit support for this machine in a recent OS update?Hatter: Thanks for the feedback and links. Well, as described in one of the threads you linked to, the document below reinforces your assertion that only Mac Pro's 3,1 or later (early 2008) support 64-bit booting in Snow Leopard:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770
However, if you asked me in court, I would swear on a stack of Bibles that sometime in the past, I read an Apple document indicating that the Mac Pro 2,1 supported 64-bit booting and I really thought I recalled booting this particular machine into 64-bit mode under early versions of Snow Leopard.
I guess I'm mistaken. Certainly, this issue can be confusing. When I read them out loud to myself, even perfectly-written, accurate explanations on the subject can sound like a circular, non-sensical George Bush rationalization being delivered by comic Will Ferrell. I must not be correctly recalling the details of booting into 64-bit mode with this machine. And I guess that since Photoshop has its own memory management scheme, and I only have 16 gigabytes of SDRAM installed anyway, it doesn't matter that much. Furthermore, in one of your links, Jason Snell of Macworld writes:
"...If you’re running a Mac powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or an Intel Xeon processor, your Mac is 64-bit capable. And Snow Leopard runs 64-bit-capable applications in 64-bit mode regardless of whether it’s booting into a 64-bit or 32-bit kernel. In fact, the only big advantage of booting into a 64-bit kernel would be the ability to use more than 32 gigabytes of RAM..." -
Does Mac Pro auto-detect USB graphics card?
Hi
I have Mac Pro with a half dead motherboard. For whatever reason it can't recognize graphic cards. I've tried switching around with other similar graphic cards from other working Mac Pro's with the same specs (early 2008).
If I plug in a USB graphics card, does that start working immediately or does it need to be installed before anything happens?
I realize this Mac Pro is probably going to die on me any day now. But the USB cards are cheap (since work is paying), I can utilize it until it dies, even with weak graphic power.
Thanks.I doubted there was anything to be done about the internal graphics, that's why I neglected to give other details.
I just realized it was an older Mac Pro than I originally thought.
It's this one with 2x3.0GHz Xeon processors (A1186) (EMC 2113)
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP30
We run Lion on all our machines.
It used to be spending it's days as a Metadata controller for an XSAN 2.0. But we've upgraded to Lion Server, on two Mac Mini's. So it's out of a job until I can get it to give me an image on a screen.
So the card it's not seeing is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (probably died).
I tested these
NVIDIA GeForce 6600
NVIDIA GeForce 210 512 MB
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
But none of these appear to be on the list of compatibles for my Mac.
I just need it to work for cheap right now. Buying a internal graphics card is to expensive because it's basically going to be an oversized and overpowered harddrive (maybe subjected to some SMB share experimentations).
Right now I can't even get it on our network because I can't see the MAC Addresses
So no remote controlling either...
