Cloning Server OS Raid0 to external Raid0(mac software raid) via CCC

Have OS X Server 10.5.8 on a couple of Seagates (2 X 1TB) Raid 0(striped)
Have 2 LaCie 1TB externals firewired to server configured as Raid 0 (striped)
Desire to make 'bootable' clone, for quick restore should the internal os volume fail.
Will select 'Install Mac OS 9 Disk Drivers' upon formatting/raid setup as it should be..right?
Using Carbon Copy Cloner should do the job, correct? Any experience relative to this by anyone?
Look forward to any opinion..thanks

Thank you!

All new drives need to be partitioned GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled before they can be used.
OK, is that an option I'll be prompted to by the OS or do I have to "tell" that to...Disk Utilities (?)
If cloning is your purpose then use Disk Utility's Restore option. It will clone the drives and their Recovery HD partitions automatically.
I didn't know that Disk Utility had an option for cloning a bootable drive...is it better than CCC? (I have used neither one) I really would like to save $40 and avoid downloading additional software/applications...please if you don't mind...what option would that be once I click on "Disk Utility"? If you know of a good link or reliable article on the topic that will work for me too.
Test a clone be trying to boot the computer from it.
Any bootable drive in any bay can be used to boot the computer. Use Startup Drive preferences to set the desired boot volume.
Erase the target and try again.
But if the computer fails to start because I didn't create a good copy, how do I go back? Keyboard shortcuts? I keep reading that a wired keyboard must be used...and that's scary. If that's true, could I hook up any of my Windows based keyboards via USB?
Erase the drive and install OS X. You cannot use any software installed by the prior owner that was purchased via the App Store including OS X. You must start from scratch. (this actually is 5B rather than item 6.)
Well, he created an Admin account for me and I have been handling updates and everything with the new password he created for me. I wonder if I could access the Apple Store with my ID though...it's all under my name in that computer though, so I figure that at the Apple Store I'd just enter my ID...I guess, I have not tried that yet

  • Mac Software RAID support

I'm using two LaCie Firewire 800/USB drives. I would like to know if it's possible for the mac to use one firewire port and one USB port as a RAID set. I would like to use a Wacom tablet, at the same time as the raid set.

If you can't invest or add ExpressCard, forget it.
There are so many things and threads about USB RAID, a horrible idea and implementation - maybe USB3 will come to the rescue in this century, until then, no, and ExpressCard with SATA and Port Multiplier (and not LaCie drive cases), and no daisy-chaining, no mixing hard drives and others on hub or consumer electronic devices.
And where is the bandwidth to drive all that over a very thin pipe or channel.
http://www.macsales.com/firewire - there are some cases with more storage, but you are still limited. If you had FW800 or heaven forbid! an actual native eSATA port.

  • Mac OS X 10.4 - Software RAID 10???

    Hello All...
As a motion graphics artist by trade and a musician at night, I am constantly faced with the on-going dilemma of my storage needs. As you may probably already know, these two activities eat up drive space and require a speedy storage solution as well.
    Here's my current setup:
    - PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz (PCI-X) w/ 3GB of RAM.
    - Sonnet Tempo-X eSATA 4x4 PCI-X card.
    - MacGurus Burly 4 bay SATA enclosure.
    - 2 250GB WD drives in the Burly enclosure.
I have the two 250GB WD drives in the external SATA enclosure software-RAIDed together to form one RAID 0 (striped) volume, using the OS X disk utility RAID feature. While that has resulted in an excellent, fast, big disk... I am starting to run into errors, and starting to lose sleep over the fact that the current setup is not redundant / reliable.
My initial solution was to buy two more disks, RAID them together as another striped volume and run backups from the first two-disk WD striped volume to the new striped RAID. So, four disks, two striped raids with two disks each.... But when I called Sonnet Tech Support, the support guy said that OS X 10.4 has support for RAID 10. That changes everything! If I could fill the Burly enclosure with 4 of the same disks and software RAID 10 them together, I'd be in business... I think...
Does OS X 10.4 really allow you to create a software RAID 10???
If so, do you think this is the most ideal solution for what I'm working with?
Keep in mind, I'm working with a low budget. No, XServes/XServe-RAID is NOT an option!
    Any input is greatly appreciated!
    TIA

    Hi, noka.
Yes, it supports RAID 10. See "Disk Utility 10.5 Help: Protecting your data against hardware failure with a mirrored RAID set."
However, you may not get the performance you expect.
FWIW and IMO, unless one is running a high-volume transaction server with a 99.999% ("Five Nines") availability requirement, RAID is overkill. For example, unless you're running a bank, a brokerage, or a major e-commerce site, you're probably spending sums of time and money with RAID that could be applied elsewhere.
RAID is high on the "geek chic" scale, low on the practicality scale, and very high on the "complex to troubleshoot" scale when problems arise. The average user, even one in your lines of business, is better served by implementing a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution and using it regularly.
    Good luck!

  • Moving Thunderbold DAS with software RAID 1 to different Mac

Background:  I am preparing to wipe my iMac (currently Mavericks) to then do a clean install of Yosemite.  Attached to my iMac is a "WD MyBook Thunderbolt Duo".  This external "DAS" drive model is a single enclosure that contains two, 2TB physical drives, and attaches to the iMac with a single Thunderbolt cable.  I am not using any WesternDigital software on my iMac!  Instead, I have used Disk Utility to manage the drive and have created a single 2TB software RAID 1 array (HFS+Journaled) incorporating both of the 2 physical drives as slices.  The RAID 1 volume mounts as "DAS" on my Desktop and currently contains the majority of my media files.
Before beginning the repartitioning, formatting, and doing a clean install of Yosemite on the iMac's internal HDD, I plan on disconnecting the DAS's thunderbolt cable so it's safe from the install process.
Question:  What I need to know is what to expect when I eventually reconnect the DAS to the new Yosemite installation.  Will my RAID 1 volume "DAS" simply mount on the desktop as expected?
What I don't understand is where software RAID slice and volume configurations are stored.  Is the software RAID 1 configuration stored as part of the partition table on the drives themselves or is it stored on the Mac?  I am hoping to hear that the software RAID configuration is all on the drives themselves and therefore the drive can be reattached to a new Mac and it will just recognize the configuration and mount the volume normally with no additional effort.  Can someone please confirm this to ease my mind (or save me before I go ahead with this).
Sorry to put this in the OS X Server forum but I thought that a software RAID question using Disk Utility would be best answered from the expertise here.
I appreciate any info you can provide.

Yes the software RAID configuration is stored on the drives themselves so it will be safe to disconnect from one Mac and reconnect to a second Mac.
Note to others. Any Mac that supports Thunderbolt is going to be running a new enough version of OS X so as to not cause a problem.

  • Acomdata external drive MAC using SecureHD LogIn.

Has anyone figured out how to update Acomdata external drive to use on MAC using SecureHD LogIn?
The only way now is to launch the PC side of MAC, sign in then suspend the PC side, then the drive appears on the MAC desktop and can be used. This is a pain!

    Hi pealo86
If your going to be using the External HD strictly for backing up the iMac, ie Time Machine or Cloning with SuperDuper or CarbonCloner, then you will want to reset the Partition Map Scheme to *GUID Partition Table* and the Format to *Mac OS Extended* (Journaled).
adding these DU instructions > http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
If however you wish to use the External Drive for sharing files between OS X and Windows then you will either need the Mac software that JGG has suggested or need to reset the Drive Format to MS-DOS FAT-32, which unfortunately has a file size limit of 4GB.

  • How can I create a new folder in an external disk that is connected via USB to my Mac?

How can I create a new folder in an external disk that is connected via USB to my Mac?

Just like you would create a new folder anywhere. Open the drive's icon from your desktop or the Finder, and click shift-command-N. (Or use the Finder menu if you prefer - File - New Folder).
If you can't create a folder, your drive may be the wrong format (you can't write to a Windows/NTFS formatted drive, for example). You'll have to back up any files you have on there, and then use Disk Utility to reformat it to Mac Extended (if it will only be used on a Mac) or MS-DOS format (if you want to share it with a PC).

  • Server App not seeing external LDAP users & groups

I have a clean 10.8.2 + Server install set up with our standard external LDAP directory (Novell's eDirectory in our case) configuration that is known to support Lion & Mountain Lion client LDAP authentication. With this same configuration on OS X 10.8.2 Server both Directory Utility and WGM can see all the LDAP users and groups as expected.
When I look for the external users & groups in the LDAP domain under the Server App "Accounts" heading I cannot see any entries in either users or groups lists. Should I be able to or is this a Server App quirk?
I can add individual LDAP users to a local group and enable access to individual services. How can I give access to services to all LDAP users without having to build & maintain a massive "All LDAP Users" local group?
Is there a published list of required LDAP attributes for users & groups for Mountain Lion Server? I suspect there are new requirements over and above those for 10.6 server but I have failed to find a good reference. I've noticed I get different behaviours for LDAP templates that includes a mapping for GeneratedUID to one which does not for example.
This is all so much more opaque than our superbly reliable Snow Leopard servers!
    TIA

    Ok, and again:
You want to see Users and Groups , which are stored in an third Party directory service like OpenLDAP, in your Server.app? This is what you have to do:
Connect the third party ldap to your server
Have all your external LDAP entries made so you can see them in the Workgroup Manager and are able to Login with them
When you see your LDAP-entry in the Directory Manager, change it from "From Server" to "RFC2307"
Edit the entry, add the following mapping to it:GeneratedUUID maps to apple-generateduuid
To your group and user entries in the external LDAP add the follwing attribute:apple-generateduuid gets the value taken from the output of "uuidgen"
    Feel lucky
And there ist ist; now you are able to use The accounts taken from an external LDAP.

  • Need info on Cloning Server Services in BOXi3.1

    Hi All,
I am looking for information on Cloning Server Services in BOXi3.1. The specific points that i am looking for are mentioned below:
    1. How cloning is of advantage, specially in areas where we are facing network traffic?
    2. Can we monitor WEBI server memory?
    3. How to increase the WEBI server memory and will it improve the throughput time of the report?
Any help or pointers regarding the same would be of great help.
    Thanks a lot in advance
    Regards,
    Honed Ali

    1. If you clone server to another box, network traffic will be balanced between original and new server
    2. Not inside the product, yes by using third party utilities, like Task manager, prstat or top etc...
    3. Xi3.1 is a 32 bit product, with memory limitations all 32bit products have, it can use up to 2gb of memory. Webi report server will stop accepting requests and recycle if it reach close to 2gb of memory.
Best advise here - do ot design huge or long running reports.

No, unfortunately the photomerge ui plugin will not work in photoshop cs6 on the mac side.
You can always use photoshop cs5 for those times when you really need it.
In photoshop cs6 you could align your photos manually as best you can, then select all the layers and go to Edit>Auto-Blend Layers>Panorama with Seamless Tones and Colors checked

    Hallo an alle,

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

  • I have new 2T iomega external HD (Mac Companion) - my Mac (2.8 GHz i7 - Lion OS) will not recognize HD if hooked up with Firewire, but it does recognize if hooked up via USB - how can I get it to recognize with Firewire?

I have new 2T iomega external HD (Mac Companion) - my Mac (2.8 GHz i7 - Lion OS) will not recognize HD if hooked up with Firewire, but it does recognize if hooked up via USB - how can I get it to recognize with Firewire?

Try a different FW800 cable and also try doing a SMC reset. If neither work try another FW800 device to see if it's recognized, if it is then  you know it's not the Mac it's probably the EHD.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • I deleted all mail on server. How do I restore .mac mailboxes from backup?

My .mac mailbox was almost full so I went to my .mac account through my browser and deleted everything and emptied the trash. Then when I looked in my mail.app on my imac all my emails were gone from my .mac account. I have a complete backup, but when I copied to user/library/mail/my .mac folder (which has about 6 subfolders), nothing showed up in my mailboxes on my desktop. How can I restore my .mac mailboxes.? And how do I setup my .mac mail so it doesn't stay on the server at all but only on my own hard drive?

    Hello,
Either resetup your .mac account as Account Type POP, or simply create some On My Mac mailboxes and move the messages from your .mac Inbox to these one or more On My Mac mailboxes (created as New Mailboxes).
When set up as Account Type .mac, it is the same as IMAP, and the Inbox resides on the server, as normally does the Sent mailbox. The strong point of IMAP accounts is that the Sent and Inbox synce between computers since the mailboxes reside on the server. Most people choose a .mac account specifically because the mailboxes reside on the server.
When you first reconnected with Mail, after using web access to delete, it synced the empty Inbox, as would be expected with an IMAP or .mac account. If you have a backup copy of any xxxx.imapmbox folder that once existed on the server, then you can rename that to be xxxx.mbox and Import it into Mail. This would include the INBOX.imapmbox folder from the copy of your .mac account folder.

  • Mac OS X Server on the new Intel based Mac Minis?

I've successfully been running Mac OS X Sever on my G4 based Mac Mini. Does anyone know if it can be run on an Intel Mac Mini? - The install appears to work, but Server Admin doesn't see the Mac, and Software update doesn't seem to find any updates.
Anyone done this successfully / know if it can be run?
    Thanks.
    Mac Mini Intel

Thanks everyone. I called Apple and they actually said it was supported (I spoke to the guy in the Mac OS X Server support area). He said to do what is described in this thread, and then install the incremental updates to Sever admin.
I did all this, but it doesn't work - so I think at this point, we have to assume it's not yet supported.
I suppose you could still install Mac OS X Server on the mini, and then use Server Admin on a different machine to manage it...?
