Cloning windows partition for new HDD

I am getting a new HDD for my mac and have a windows partition. From searching, I know that Mac OS X recognizes this as a different HDD entirely. I want to know if there is a way I can clone my current Mac partition AND Windows 7 partition onto my new HDD

Did I miss the memo? I wasn't aware that SD or CCC could clone a Boot Camp partition. I know Disk Utility won't.
I believe CopyCatX will replicate an entire drive via bit-copy. And CloneZilla can also be used to clone the Windows volume or a whole drive. Not sure how well it does with Mac formatted volumes, but it's supposed to work. Look for them at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

  • Rapid Restore Ultra don't resize partition on new HDD

    Hi,
first as a new member,i send many thanks for both Lenovo community and Thinkpad.com Forum members for their great help in the thinkpad users world.....
Following one of the very good advices of Ajikula,i bought a new Samsung HM160HC IDE HDD to upgrade my old Hitachi 60 Gb on my R50p(1832 2ag)...
Previously ,i made a set of Recovery Media CD (19..) with Rapid Restore Ultra ...
You should know that it's the original version of RRU who comes from a previous Restore From Factory Settings, never update it..
On the other hand i run the last Bios and drivers and run XP SP3.
I putted brand new HDD (not formatted neither partitioned) instead of the old one and ran Backup Restore from the boot CD of the set i made..
All run very fine and some hours later all (OS,Programs and data)run fine in the new silent HDD.
The only problem is when i go in Windows "Disk manager" RRU install the same partitions size as they were on the old 60 G HDD,leaving 92Gb of "unalocated space" on the new 160 G HDD...
1)Should i had to format the new HDD before performing the Restore to allow Rapid Restore Ultra to resize the main partition(theHidden IBM service one still the same size obviously)
2)i read in RRU IBM doc any further partitioning lead to problems with RRU use, does that applies to this unallocated space (not already formatted)or just to the other partitions?
In other words, could i format this unallocated space, and IF YES what kind of partition could i create, without disturbing further RRU work (creatind Backups and Restore them..)
Thank you very much for your future help..!!
I apologize for my somewhat approximative english..!!
    Best regards
    Eric

    Hi,
so first of all you need to understand, that RnR (Rescue and Recovery) is not an imaging tool, it is a backup tool, which means, that in the backup are multiple informations stored. With information I mean also the alocated space. Which means in reality:
    - you capture a rapid restore backup on a 60GB HDD
    - you restore it on 120GB HDD => this will create only a 60GB partition, where will be all restored
    - if you try to restore it on a 50GB HDD, then you may experience unexpected results, as the backup is expecting a 60GB HDD.
So in this case what you can do is to create a second partition from the rest, that was left from the restore.
What you can create is a NTFS Partition.
Let me know, if you need any more information.
    Cheers

  • HDD Failed, how to copy restore partition to new HDD?

    Hallo,
I have a Compaq Mini netbook, with Windows 7 Starter.
The HDD failed and it's not repairable. However, it seems that the recovery partition is OK.
I want to buy a new HDD, install the driver on the netbook and then use the recovery partition/tools in order to install windows 7 on the new PC.
So, the question is simple: How do I copy recovery partition to the new HDD?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hello s91066.
So your hard drive on your notebook has failed? If this is the case what do you mean by the "recovery partition is ok?" I doubt that this notebook has two hard drives so if you're able to see this partition your hard drive may still be working.
You'll need a set of recovery discs to restore the partitions on the new hard drive. If you're able to boot into Windows, which you probably can't with a dead hard drive, you can follow these steps if you can get into Windows.
If you can not boot into Windows you need a set of discs. You can order these directly from HP. The number for the US/Canada is 1-800-474-6836. If you're in another area you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your area's contact information.
I hope this is helpful; have a great weekend!

  • 'Clean' 10.8 Install for New HDD

I'm installing a new HDD but do not want to clone the entire contents from my old HDD, just the mountain lion system platform.  Reason being is that I want to start with a 'clean slate' without any 3rd party software, etc.
    • If I boot from the old HDD that's connected via an external enclosure, will Recovery allow me to select the new HDD and download mountain lion?
    • Or do I have to first configure the new HDD with 10.6.8 then use Recovery (once booted to the old HDD with mountain lion) to download mountain lion to the new HDD?
What I'm not clear on is whether Recovery will allow me to select the new HDD and download, even with the old HDD on board.
If there's another procedure for accomlishing my goal aside from what I mentioned above I'd greatly appreciate any guidance.
    Thanks.

Yes, starting up in Recovery Mode will allow you to download and install Mountain Lion onto the New HDD.
But there is a catch, the new HDD must first be set up GUID Partition Table and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before you can Install OS X and use it as a Startup Drive.
    What I do is:
    1. Pop the new HDD into the Enclosure
    2. Connect the External HD up to the iMac
    3. Go to Applcations Utilities and open Disk Utility
    4. Highlight the new HDD in the list of drives and select the Partition tab
    5. Under Volume Scheme select 1 Partition and click on the Options... button
    6. Select GUID Partition Table in the drop down window and click the OK... button
    7. Next set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Apply... button
    8. Once thats done, startup into Recovery Mode, Download and Install ML on the new HDD
    9. Restart holding the Option key and from Startup Manager select the new OS X on the HDD
    10. Then only after starting up from and testing the new OS X on the new HDD, move it to the iMac

  • Mirror MacBook HD with Windows Partition to new External HD....Possible?

I am going to purchase a 500 gb SATA HD and want to install it in my macbook. My current Macbook HD is partitioned and running windows as well. Will Disk utility mirror my existing HD exactly how it is to my new external HD? Windows and all? Or will I need to partition my new 500 gb once installed in the macbook and reinstall windows?

    Hi ahartig;
I don't think so. I think you will have to find another tool to handle the Windows partition.
If you really want to know for sure you might repost over in the Boot Camp Forum where the Windows gurus tend to hang out.

  • Installing Windows 7 on new HDD

Hello, The harddrive on my dv6-3165dx recently died, and I had to replace it with a new one. The new harddrive works fine; however, I need to reinstall windows, as it came pre-installed with my old HDD. I still have the CD-KEY, since it is on the back of the computer. The bad news are that I don't have an actual CD or a recovery disc/USB. I was wondering what my options are for getting Windows. I checked the ordering recovery disc option, but it is no longer available for my laptop. I have called HP support, and they stated that they would need to send me a copy of Windows 7 for a whooping cost of 170$. A new copy of Windows 10 only costs 120$. I would obviously like to avoid buying a new copy, as they are expensive.Would it be possible to borrow a Windows 7 install disc from a friend and use the CD-KEY on the back of my laptop to install it?What are all my options? Thanks for any help and support.

Yes you can borrow a W7 install disc, as long as it is an OEM version of W7, not retail. Dell W7 discs are great for doing what you want to do.

  • Lenovo G550 move partition to new HDD (including one key recovery)

    Hi guys.
    I have a Lenovo G550 laptop.
I am looking to change out the existing stock HDD with a new SSD drive (from what I understand from other Lenovo support services, it is SATA II compatible (see http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/Lenovo-G550-HDD-SATA-I-or-SATA-II/ta-p/692351)...
Firstly. Is it possible to change the stock HDD with an SSD drive? I have a budget of about $100 AUD so it would only be a 60-120gb HDD. Would 60gb be enough (I really only need about 30gb of space on the c: drive), or would I need to look at the 120gb option.
Secondly, is there any way of migrating the entire contents of the existing HDD to the SSD HDD?
I have the ability to connect them both externally, and a spare blank 1TB HDD that I can use in the interim if needs be.
Ultimately I would like the SSD drive to have the one key boot partition and the original Windows on it. I don't mind loosing all my programs and files - I can back them up and install them in my leisure.
To complicate matters, my DVD drive isn't working (but I do have an external DVD drive I may be able to use, even possibly booting from. But not 100% sure if I can boot from it!)
And to further complicate matters, the laptop has recieved quite a bit of use, so the sticker with the product key number has been worm off. Argh!
Thank-you in advance for the assistance.
    Cheers,
    Dale.

Just done this with a G770.
Simply back up all the HD with Acronis or something to your 1TB disk. Not sure how you would connect this. USB would be best.
Exchange the laptop HD for the SSD
Boot Acronis with the CD and Restore your backup.
    Works fine.
You'll have to check the bios to see if you can boot from Ext DVD.

  • Input / Output error for new HDD on MacBook Pro 5.5

    Hi there,
    New to Apple Support Communities
I have a problem with a MacBook Pro 5.5 Intel Core 2 Duo
Original Fujitsu 160GB HDD crashed and I replaced it with a Hitachi 250GB HDD.
Hitachi 250GB drive is partitioned to GUID Partition Scheme but when I try to format the drive in Disk Utility to Mac OS X Extended Journaled, I keep receiving an Input / Output error. I tried even erasing the drive and I get the same error.
I also tried using Diskutil in terminal window and I get Input / Output error.
I talked with a guy in work who knows about the Mac and he said the drive could be locked in which the Mac can't unlock to format the drive.
There is nothing wrong with the drive at all. It works perfect. I'm at a loss as to why the Mac won't install the OS X 10.5.7
I've looked at many Mac support sites for problems / solution but no solution
Could someone who has experienced this before please help to resolve my problem.
    Regards,
    DTreacy

    Hi there,
An update on the MacBook Pro 5.5 problem.
Mac OS X seems to only install when the HDD is connected to the laptop as a USB drive.
When I put the drive back into the laptop, it won't boot to the OS.
    The mount is /volume/Macintosh_HD.
I even tried reformatting the drive but got an error that it could not unmount the drive. I tried a force unmount which worked but the drive disappeared from the disk utility.
My only way to get the drive back was to connect it again as a USB drive and again I was able to install the OS again.
Can some help to resolve the problem. How can I make the drive boot to the OS when it is connected as an internal drive
    Regards,

  • Partition for New T440s

    Hi all,
I just bought a new T440s at Lenovo online. But when I started my coumpter, I found that all the storage of my hard disk is under C. I want to partition them into C , D ,F and E. Is there a guide/article to help me on this issue in a safe way? I don't want to get the new system mess up. Thanks very much.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Wenbo, a couple of years ago I wanted to replace the original 60 gig solid state drive in my T400s with a 256 gig - the 60 gig was comprised of C space ( my working space) , S space ( system files) , and L space ( Lenovo file space ) - most of the space was C but I was using it up fast - I used the Lenovo backup and restore utility that came with the machine -  when I was finised I noticed that I didn't gain much storage as now the L space for some reason was much bigger.
Windows 7 at the time didn't have re-partitioning capability and so I bought Acronis Disk Director - it worked like a charm and ended up with enough C space to last me a long time - it cost me $50 at the time but that new hard drive was $800 and so I think the money was well spent .
Hope this helps !  Good Luck !!

  • No gui option in disk utility for new hdd in white unibody mbp

    Hello,
i replaced the harddisk in my white unibody macbook with an
Samsung Spinpoint M9T 1TB HDD out of a seagate backup portable drive.
disk utility can erase it, and partition it, but it does not show the option to create a GUI partition.
restoring from time machine backup does not work
installer for leopard, from the original dvd states that it needs that.
    what can i do?
    hope to hear from you.
    ps:
on my imac and my mbp the bootable disk is mac os extended(journaled)
    so no 'gui-partition' there

Aha! I only looked at 'format' list, didn't notice the 'option' list.
    problem solved.
    thank you !

  • Do I need to update the BIOS for new HDD?

I have to replace my HDD due to the current one dying on me. My current HDD is the 60Gb standard drive for the G4 DVI A1025. I'm considering replacing it with this model:
    http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3VNJ&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=7k1 00&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0
Which as you can see is 80Gb but otherwise looks to be pretty much the same.
Does anyone know if this drive will require a BIOS update or not?
Also when I do install it, can I simply boot from the Install DVD and then run Disk Utility to format it or does it take some other more complicated way to format it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris Gilbert

The only hard drives that won't work internally on your machine are the 1.8", SATA, and the greater than 120 GB drives given this limitation:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
What that says basically is you can have up to 200 GB if your model is this one:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBookG41GHz-867MHz.html
But not any earlier version of the Powerbook where the limit is 128 GB (since 128 GB hard drives aren't made, that's why I said 120 GB).

    Hey there r3dko,
It's all a matter of personal opinion.  You will have to read up on Windows 8, and make the decision for yourself.  I do not believe that Microsoft will force everyone to Windows 8, but I'm not 100% sure.  Don't quote me on it. lol

  • New Hard Drive, Mac partition cloned and boots fine, but I can't seem to get my BOOTCAMP (windows) partition to boot!  Any ideas?

    Hello all!
I got a new hard drive for my Mac Book Pro and an enclosure so I could clone the old partitions on to the new drive.
    So I...
Put the new hard drive in the enclosure.
Booted up off an install disk and ran disk utility.
Copied the Mac and Bootcamp partitions over to the new drive that was connected VIA USB.
Turned off the computer, took the old hard drive out and put it in the enclosure.
Put the new hard drive in the Mac Book Pro.
Booted into Mac OSX with no problem.
When I rebooted held down the option key to boot into the windows side, it didn't show up as an option.
When I went back into the Mac side, I loaded Disk Utility and saw that I had the Mac partition, the BOOTCAMP partition, and a bunch of unallocated space.  When I went into the System Preferences and set the target boot drive to the BOOTCAMP partition and restarted, I got some crazy error about there not being any bootable info on it.
That's where I am at.  I have found other posts with people who are having the same problem, but I have yet to find a solution that doesn't involve me buying some 3rd party software.  I know it has something to do with (what is called in Microsoft world) the Master Boot Record, but I don't know how to modify that to reflect that the BOOTCAMP partition is a bootable logical drive.  I remember in MS DOS land there was some command line FDSK /something command that you would run (I think it was /MBR) to reset the MBR.  To me though, all of these terms are shadowy figures in the Ether.
    What do I do???
    -Ricardo
p.s.  I read somewhere to boot off the windows 7 disk and run the system repair tools. I tried that and no change.

I got it. It CAN be done. At least on 10.6
How I made it happen (for free) on Snow Leopard:
    1) partition, dupe etc all that jazz that you know. Make the mac side work, which it seems we've all been able to do no issues. I used SuperDuper! It worked just fine. (Had it on a disk. I assume you could use any other free way of doing this.)
    2) New hard drive running, I used bootcamp assistant to partition the new drive for a new Bootcamp. I don't know if it's necessary to make the new partition this way for some reason, but it's what the process ultimately included, so maybe try without, but it worked with.
    3) Natively running original drive on the windows side. Used DirveImage XML to clone windows partition onto new drive connected externally.
    4) Back on new hard drive running natively. (Sorry for all the switching.) You'll note that the new Bootcamp partition is NOT bootable at this point. It won't come up in the usual 'alt on startup' boot menu.
Download rEFInd and install on mac side. Technically this is freeware or w/e, but for the love of god, throw money at this man. He totally deserves it.
    5) Restarting the computer, rEFInd's boot manager finally recognizes windows. But you'll find windows is a little messed up and still won't quite boot. Get out your Windows CD and pop it in. Do the 'alt boot' thing. Your boot menu options are now "EFI Manager," "Bootcamp," and "Windows Disk." Or some such. Holy Crap! It recognizes Windows!
    6) Boot to the CD and tell it to repair the windows volume. It will. My computer also had to do a disk check next time I booted to Windows, which took for-stupid-ever, but eventually worked. (I went to bed in between.)
    7) Everything is running smoothly. Plus, you get the rEFInd boot manager, which is also great.
Deets: I have a late 2010 MBP 13". Snow leopard/Windows 7 32-bit (long story) Moved from original 320GB seagate momentus to new 750GB Seagate Momentus XT.
Feel free to share/copy&paste this solution as you see useful. Cheers!
