Close bookmarks sidebar in Mavericks

Does anyone know how to make the new bookmarks sidebar in Safari automatically close when a bookmark is selected?

But the new sidebar in Safari in the Mavericks OS can be closed, right?  I agree that it should automatically close. I just really don't want a sidebar that always stays open (like the sidebars in folders a few versions back).
This concern is one of the reasons I haven't downloaded Mavericks yet.
Thanks,
Paula

• Can't close BookMark SideBar

I'm running FireFox on Windows XP SP3.
I selected a bookmark from the bookmark drop down menu. Instead of opening a new tab, the URL for the bookmark opened in the Bookmark sidebar to the left of the main tab content.
Now, I cannot close or shrink to nothing the Bookmark sidebar. It takes up a lot of the screen & it is very frustrating that I cannot close or shrink it.
Please let me know if you have any tips on what to do to get rid of it.
Thanks.
Update:
I was able to close the sidebar by selecting the menu item View>Sidebar>Bookmarks. So, problem is practically solved. However, I was not able to get the sidebar to close by selecting the x in the upper right corner of the sidebar. There seems to be a bug in that mechanism to close the sidebar.
Thanks.

Try closing to sidebar by pressing <code>Ctrl</code> + <code>B</code>.
Please report back soon.

• Bookmarks sidebar cover Flash player and PDF plugin when active.

This problem is present in FF 5 - 6 - 7.

This square appear and disappear when i move the mouse over this, or the problem go back when i close the bookmarks sidebar.

Ok, I tried to download the firefox browser but IE wouldn't let me download it.  My friend downloaded it from their computer to a flash drive and I loaded it to my computer from the flash drive.  The download of Firefox from the flash drive worked, and now I'm using Firefox & both my adobe flash player and my adobe reader are working just great.
However, neither the flash player nor the reader are working if I use IE, so I guess I will just have to use Firefox as my browser.
I'm going to mark my question as answered since I really don't care that I have to use Firefox instead of IE,although I can't understand why it works using Firefox but not using IE.
Thank you so much for your assistance in walking me step-by-step through this problem until I was able to reach a satisfactory solution.

• How do I open the bookmarks sidebar in firefox 7?

I can't seem to find where I can open a sidebar to view my bookmarks and browsing history without opening a separate window. I know in the older version of firefox I could just click view>sidebar and that's what the help instructions say to do, but that info doesn't show anything about opening a sidebar with the latest version of firefox because there is no "view" option, or at least none that I can see!

You can hit the Alt key to temporarily show the Menu Bar, which has the View menu. Or you can use { Ctrl + B } to open (and close) the Bookmarks Sidebar.

• What is the shortcut to open|close the Sidebar?

I was very used to have F9 on every platform to open|close the sidebar.
As I am a keyboard people, the clicking on the Sidebar icon is not a perfect solution. You had the shortcut and now it's gone.
I respectfully ask for it back.
No troubleshooting info is required, because it's not a failure.

@Aleksej: My version of Firefox is 36.0.4 in Linux Ubuntu 14.10. The sidebar that I want to open is the one that has Delicious service inside of it. I suppose other services or kind of things might be in it.
@cor-el: I know that using Ctrl+B gives me the Bookmarks sidebar, or Ctrl-H the History one. Precisely, that is the shortcut that I'm looking for, so I can open|close the Delicious service, or anything else that can be opened|closed with the Sidebar icon.
I'm looking NOT to use the mouse to open|close, but a keyboard shortcut.
I already know that the Customize keyboard plugin does NOT bind a new shortcut, and the Sidebar shortcut is NOT included... or maybe I'm wrong, :D

• I closed my Bookmarks Sidebar but now see no function on the menu to get it back. I'm using 4.0.

The vertical Sidebar is one of the best features of Firefox, but because I use a netbook I sometimes need to close it in order to view the full webpage. The last browser version had a "View" drop-down menu in which one could click and restore the sidebar--in 4.0, however, there is no "View" menu, and the various bookmark functions only deal with the horizontal bookmark toolbar. How do I restore the vertical sidebar?

Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.
You can find a toolbar button to open the Bookmarks Sidebar in the toolbar palette and drag it on the Navigation Toolbar or Tab bar.
Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"

• I need a bookmarks sidebar with a scroll arrow.

Hello,
I need a bookmark setup like I had in IE. A side panel with a scroll arrow if possible.
I am running Windows 7 on a new computer with cable.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Jim Franchetto

There is a Bookmarks Sidebar. The quickest way to display it is to press Ctrl+b (this also closes it). Note that if your cursor is in a text editor, Ctrl+b might be intercepted to bold text instead of opening the sidebar.
Does that work the way you would like it to work?

• Auto hide the bookmarks sidebar on iPad in landscape

The new behavior of the bookmarks sidebar is frustrating me. I am hoping that someone knows a way to make the sidebar disappear in the landscape mode without tapping the bookmark icon again to close it. I don't see the logic in selecting a bookmark then having the sidebar stay open on 1/3 of the screen unless you manually close it. Please tell me there is a fix.

Tap the solid blue bookmark icon at the top of bookmarks to dismiss bookmarks.

• Bookmark sidebar always open when I start Firefox. How to prevent?

Upon starting Firefox, the bookmarks sidebar is always open. It is a nuisance to constantly need to close it. This has never happened before. It suddenly started a couple weeks ago and now the sidebar is open each morning I open Firefox. I can't find any options for it in the menu. Just the temporary closing. Using Firefox 26.

• How to decrease the width of bookmarks sidebar?

I would like bookmarks sidebar to be narrower than allowed by default range for width.
I tried many advices, no success. I tried to create something like userChrome.css with recommended code snippet inside but it did not work. Others were recommending Stylish add on but i do not know what to do with it. The only tool which had been working was ChromEdit Plus add on. But after I reinstalled my sWindows ystem on Sunday, this extension does not seem to be working anymore.
OS: Windows 7 64 bit
Firefox version: 26

ChromEdit Plus needs the correct code to do anything, the extension alone does nothing! And that specific code is exactly the same as one would use in a manually creates userChrome.css file. The only real difference is that CEP automatically creates the userChrome.css file (and a userContent, css file), in the /chrome/ folder which doesn't exist until the user or CEP creates that folder.
That said, the width of the sidebar should be the same as the last time Firefox was closed. IOW, the user set's the size (width) of the Sidebar they prefer, they close Firefox after using it, and when they open Firefox the next time the width of the Sidebar should be the same as when they last closed Firefox. If it isn't the same, the localstore.rdf might be slightly corrupt, or "something" is messing with the localstore.rdf by changing preferences.

• Permanently hide bookmarks sidebar

Is there any way to permanently hide the bookmarks sidebar in Safari?  I can temporarily hide it but when I exit and re-enter Safari it appears again.

Permanenty hide the Sidebar in Safari 7?
There is no preference setting availble for that.
The book icon in the Favorites bar allows open/close the sidebar.

• Bookmarks Folders Freeze In Bookmarks Sidebar

When Bookmarks Sidebar has been open for a few minutes folders tend to freeze.
They can freeze in the open position or the closed position.
Clicking on them will make no difference.
The only way to remedy this is to close the sidebar and go back to View Bookmarks Sidebar.
They will open in the same position, but clicking on them will now work.
This problem has happened through recent versions of Firefox.
I am now on version 35.0.1.
Numerous virus tests have been run, but nothing has shown.
I use Windows Vista.
As I have a lot of bookmarks I would not like to lose any.
Would appreciate any help.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
* Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

You have two versions of the same plugin:
*Shockwave Flash 16.0 r0
*Shockwave Flash 11.4 r402
Try unistall them and reinsta the last versions, from get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

• Bookmarks sidebar disappears in Nightly

I am using Nightly 64bit with the most recent update. My problem is that I like to use the bookmarks sidebar but it has to be re-activated every time unless you leave it open at shutdown.
I would like it greatly if the functionality of the bookmarks sidebar was the same as in firefox 32bit. I hope I am just missing something.

The bookmarks sidebar works the same way in previous versions of Firefox:
*Leave it open at Firefox shutdown and it will be open when you restart Firefox.
*Close it before Firefox shutdown, and it will NOT be open when you restart Firefox; you must open it again (CTRL+b).
Believe me, it's a fact. I use the 32-bit version(s) only. I currently have Firefox 25.0.1, 26 beta, 27 Aurora, and Nightly 28 all installed with separate, and some multiple profiles, and there is no difference in the behavior of Bookmarks Sidebar that I have found. I use the Bookmarks Sidebar and leave it open most of the time for retrieving bookmarks and for adding new ones (I do not like the method for adding using the "star" icon).

• In FF 25 on XP there was a star to left of navigation toolbar to open bookmarks sidebar, now it's on the right, but does not open the sidebar - what's up?

I want that little star back that opens the bookmarks sidebar. It's just to the left of the address field on XP in FP 25. But on Windows 8 in FP 25.0.1 it's not there. Instead there's a star that sometimes appears on the right of the address bar. But the star on the right does not open the bookmarks sidebar. It only displays a list of bookmarks and options, which do not include opening the sidebar.
Has this option been removed and replaced with Ctrl B?

You can look at the Classic Theme Restorer extension to restore some functionality that was lost with the arrival of the Australis style in Firefox 29.
This includes toolbar icons to open the bookmarks and the history in the sidebar.
*Classic Theme Restorer: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/
You can check the settings of the CTR extension via its Options/Preferences button on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" page.

• I cannot work out what the folders in my Bookmark sidebar mean

My Bookmarks sidebar, which is where I store and work my bookmarks, is now showing, below the usual headers down to "Mozilla Firefox" and its subheads, a (yellow) folder called "Temp". This is where all the bookmarks I use regularly are listed. i don't know why it is called "Temp" as i thought that was supposed to be a name for a folder which only holds bookmarks for a few days, heaven help me if that was the case, but it clearly is not in this instance.
It also has right under it another yellow folder called "[Folder name]". This seems to have in it another bunch of bookmarks that I have opened at some stage, but certainly in some cases have deleted in recent months. I don't know what they are going there.
When I download a new bookmarks, Firefox 29 now puts it into "Unsorted Bookmarks" and you have to drag and drop it to the folder you want to use. I have tried several times to do this, resulting in the new bookmark not appearing in the folder called "Temp" which is my real bookmark folder (I do not know why it has this name). They seem to stay in "Recently Bookmarked" OK, so I don't lose them, but trying to drag and drop to the header "Bookmarks Menu" as I used to in Firefox 28, or "Temp", which seems to be the header for my real bookmarks list, either has no result, or else the bookmark appears in "[Folder Name]", but underneath all the old bookmarks in that, but slightly indented from the list called "Temp".
I don't know what the folder called "[Folder]" is doing, or if I should re-name the folder called "Temp" (which is not a temp folder), although I think I should.
Or why it is so difficult to drag and drop. Which point in the list should I drag and drop to? (I know how to Sort by Name, that is not a problem.)
I know that when I download a new bookmark, I should hit the star twice and choose a folder at that point which, if I remember to do it at once, will save me from having to drag and drop, but I still don't know why I am not making the drag and drop work properly.
My entire Firefox setup was imported from my previous (XP) computer within the last few months to my current (Windows 7) computer, but the changes which are confusing me seem to have happened with the advent of Firefox 29.
I have read the Help page before I posted this.
I do not understand the "Automatically add" button on the "Question" form, and I don't like tampering with things I have no information about in case I just dig myself into a deeper hole (which has been known to happen).
Thank you for any illumination you can offer.

You can check for problems with the <b>places.sqlite</b> database file in the Firefox profile folder.
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Bookmarks+not+saved#w_fix-the-bookmarks-file
*Places Maintenance: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
Note that "Recently Bookmarked" is a so called Smart Bookmark that shows the result of a place query in a list and isn't a real existing folder.
* Smart folders show a list created by a query of the places.sqlite database that stores bookmarks and history in Firefox.
* Smart folder lists show a maximum of 10 entries by default.
* Bookmarks or history items that show up in a smart folder list are stored elsewhere in another folder and any changes made are applied to the real bookmark or history item.
