Close down apps to save memory

A friend said double click on start button I assume she means home button n then a minus comes up and click on that to shut down apps to save memory please help

While you could be correct, your guess is as good as anyone's who doesn't have direct knowledge of what's going on inside the box.  If you get better results by shutting down certain apps, that's fine.
But for the crashes you're describing, I think it is better to do a complete restore (w/o backup) to get a fresh start -- I'm convinced that these crashes are due to corrupted data in the backup files, which is not necessarily a memory management issue by the OS.  But in the interim, sure shut down the apps that seem to be problematic, but that's just a band-aid.

Yeah, I'm 95% sure that I did that after I closed that Skype, so I was a bit shocked when I saw that screen pop up later :/

Double click the home button to bring up the multitask bar, hold one app icon until they all start to shake, hit the little minus icon to close the app. Click on the home button to get back to the home screen again.
In most of the cases deleting the mail account and setting it up again can cure the battery drain. There have been cases in which the mail app got stuck trying to connect to the server over and over again, causing the drain.

Double tap the home button, then when in multitasking view take your index finger and swipe up on a card to completely exit the app. Same goes for safari but instead of swiping up swipe to the left or tap the x icon when you are in the multi page view.

how do I close down apps without deleting them?

If you want to completely exit the apps, then press the home button twice to access the multitasking bar.  Then press and hold on one of the apps, they should start wiggling, and a red minus sign should appear in the corner of every app.  Press the red minus sign and the app should disappear signifying that it has successfully been quit.

  • HT204266 My App Store keeps struggling to load up. Requests frequently time out and searches just don't do anything. If it does load up a search, the iPad closes down App Store, returns to home screen and, upon re-opening, the search has been deleted. Hel

I've had my iPad (retina display) since last year. Over the last few weeks the App Store struggles to load on occasion and times out completely. When searches do rarely complete, the App Store closes down and returns my iPad to the home screen and, when I open the App Store again, it has just reset the store, forcing it to load all over again. I've tried closing all running background applications, with no difference being made. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Double-click the Home button to reveal Task Bar
    2. Hold the App Store app down for a second or two until you see the minus sign
    3. Tap the minus sign to close app
    4. Re-launch the app and test
Note: If necessary close all apps in the Task Bar

Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Communities page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums and in the Apple Knowledge Base before you post a question.

  • Why is it that every time I am doing something weather it's looking in the app store or using safari I iPad will close down and take me to my home screen? It gets very frustrating when you in the middle of something. I have checked for updates, none avai

None available. Any possible solution of what could be causing this issue. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Your iPad is as updated as it can be at 5.1.1. Your apps are crashing probably due to a lack of memory. Try keeping apps in the recents tray to a minimum. For starters close all apps completely, clear Safari and then reboot the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
See if this helps at all. If if does, remember to keep apps in the recents tray to a minimum. You shouldn't have to do that, but unfortunately, iOS 5.1.1 stretched the capability of the original iPad processor to its limits .... IMO!

  • My iPad randomly shuts downs apps and safari...any suggestions? The pad it's self doesn't shut down..it just closes the page or app I am on..

My iPad randomly shuts down apps and Safari...any fixes for this?

Basic troubleshooting steps might help. If you are using the iPad 1, low memory issues may be causing the app and Safari to crash.
Quit all apps completely and restart the iPad. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Definitely do this - Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

How do u close the apps when done with them to save power with iOS 7

To close out apps, simply double click the home button and instead of holding down the app icons and clicking on the X mark in older versions, you have to swipe the app window up and away.
Also you can save on battery by turning of background app refresh from settings .... See this article for details , http://nyacomputing.com/how-to-close-out-background-apps-in-ios-7-and-save-on-ba ttery/
