Close finder window
When I open a file, is there keyboard shortcut to concurrently close the finder window that contains the file I am opening?
thanks
tjerman
Interesting, Cmd-Option-down arrow works with another account. How can I restore this function with my account? I tried Cmd-Option-down arrow, and it worked, but I wonder, do you know what I could do to restore the function of Cmd-Option-down arrow?

Script to close finder windows
Hi,
I have a network volume that mounts automatically (I drug it into login items). Someone gave me this script to close it, which I also have put into login items. Works great.
tell application "Finder"
close Finder window 1
end tell
What I need to do is modify it to close 2 windows, as I am adding a new network disk to login items. Can someone help me understand what needs to be changed or added to accomplish this? I'd like to know what the process is to edit it so that when I add more disks in the coming months I can make the changes to have all those windows close by themselves.
Thanks,
SeanHi, thanks for your quick responses.
close Finder window "TheNameAtTheTopOfTheWindow" sounds like it might be the best way to go since it's so specific.
As for the close every window command, is that the actual syntax? (I don't even know if that's the right word, lol)
Also, I just had a thought, in case there is a delay in the mounting of the disk (maybe it's spinning up or something) and the script runs before the window opens, is there a kind of "wait" command I can put before the tell finder commands that will force it wot wait for maybe 10 seconds?
Thanks again,

How to auto close finder window after drag and drop?
In Tiger, I would file away items on my desktop my dragging them to the hard drive and then digging down to the appropriate folder. The finder window would then close automatically after dropping the file. Is there a setting in Snow Leopard that will enable similar functionality? Whenever I complete a drag and drop now the finder window just stays open, which isn't a huge issue, but I'd still like to change it. Thanks!

Bug or Feature? Eject selected dmg closes Finder window
In Leopard (on my machine at least), if you
1. mount a dmg,
2. select this dmg in the sidebar of a previously opened Finder window (not the new one that pops up with the mount), and then
3. click the eject icon,
the host Finder window will close as the dmg unmounts. Is this a bug, or a feature?
In Tiger, if you do this the window remains open, and your mounted devices will be shown in the second column. While this could be mildly confusing (the devices show up twice in the left-right hierarchy), at least you are left with a Finder window and a chance for further navigation.
If this is a feature in Leopard, I think it's a questionable call: there you are with a single Finder window open, then poof, you've got nothing and it looks like the window's been lost due to a crash. Perhaps you could argue that since you selected the dmg, ejecting it could only mean you want to close the host window, since your selection will be gone and what the window should show is undefined. Actually, nah, this doesn't make sense to me for an advanced interface.
Of course, maybe this is just something afflicting me...Don't know whether to classify it as a bug or a feature. The old behavior was sorta illogical, the new behavior is logical, but silly. Anyway, if the thing being ejected (dmg or drive or whatever) is selected so that the Finder window is displaying its contents, and you eject it then window closes. If something else is selected and you eject whatever by clicking just the eject button next to it (but don't select it), the window doesn't close because the object ejected wasn't the window being displayed. Logical. New. Annoying.

Can't Close Finder Window Over Document
I was in a document, using the Help menu, thought I selected a Help topic (may have slipped and hit a different key?), and suddenly a Finder window sheet came out of the document as if I needed to Save As or select something on my hard drive. Problem is, the Cancel button and its partner (whatever it is ... Save?) dropped below my screen, so I can't close the Finder window to get back to my document. Nor can I Quit Pages (without Force Quitting and losing data) or close the document. I am stuck. Is there a way out?
Sorry, I thought from the expressions you used, you were less experienced.
Yes it is really not very Maclike to use the Escape key, we always used (cmd .) but OSX is much closer to the darkside now in an attempt to be more familiar to switchers. I have to consciously use it now as it is needed to get out of the many circumstances now where there is no visible navigation left on the screen.
IMHO to not have some way out of situations like this, harks back to the worst of DOS practices. -
Volume eject from sidebar closes finder window
after successfully upgrading 2 machines (12" pb 1.5 GHz, mac mini Core Duo 2.33 GHz) to Leopard everything works beautifully except that finder windows close when I attempt to eject a volume (CD, DVD, memory sticks, server volumes). I usually have 2 windows in column view open and only the active window closes, yet the volume unmounts successfully. This happens in any other view (list, icon) as well.
Both computers were upgraded from the latest Tiger version and don't have any extensions or pref panes installed. The problem still occurs after a "safe boot".
any help or ideas appreciatedI was a bit startled by this behavior as well. As near as I can determine, if the object the be ejected is selected in the sidebar then ejecting it closes that window. If something else is selected you can actually click the little eject button next to the thing to be ejected, it does eject, and the window stays open. I suppose this is logical: after all if something is selected in the sidebar, then Finder is displaying the window for the thing selected, and if that thing goes bye-bye then so should its window. The old behavior was actually illogical but we were used to it.

Selecting shared computer closes Finder window
I have two Airs on OS 10.9.4 that have file sharing enabled and are on my wireless network. The second Air shows up in the sidebar of the Finder window under Shared as expected, but when I click on it I immediately switch back to whatever other application is open instead of that window showing "Connect as..." in the next column. Going the other direction (from the second to the first) is fine. What am I doing wrong?
To clarify (now that I've looked at it), it actually appears to relaunch the Finder since the menu bar disappears then reappears.

Thanks,
NikoNiko, it doesn't sound good.
Thanks. I found out my errror was caused by a bad graphics card. So in case someone is going crazy trying to figure out what's going on with their application and what they coded incorrectly, this may help.
Thanks,

Anyone else compulsively hitting command-q in a Finder window? LOL
I know this is silly, but I can't stop hitting command-q to try and close finder windows - because it LOOKS like an application....
Anyone else experience this weird cross-purpose tick?Ok - now that I've got my fingers going for option-space to bring up Spaces - my urge to command-q Finder windows has reduced a bit...

Finder Window Launchs after Login.
Need to figure out why Finder launches window immediately after Log-on. Desktop appears briefly then Finder window opens to Macintosh HD.
Doesn't hurt anything just irritating have to close Finder Window after every Start-up and/or Log-on.
Ideas appreciated!
ThanxHi,
Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab.
And go to /Library/Startup Items.
Might be something in the Login Items or Startup Items that requires the Finder.
If not, go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the *com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) represents your Home folder.
Restart your Mac.

AppleScript That Saves Finder Window Size and Location
I wrote the following AppleScript to position and size Finder windows, but the Finder doesn't "remember" the settings the next time I open the windows.
tell application "Finder"
activate
make new Finder window to disk "Hard Drive"
set toolbar visible of Finder window 1 to false
set current view of Finder window 1 to icon view
clean up Finder window 1 by name
set position of Finder window 1 to {30, 55}
set bounds of Finder window 1 to {30, 55, 400, 625}
make new Finder window to folder " Files" of disk "Hard Drive"
set current view of Finder window 1 to icon view
set toolbar visible of Finder window 1 to false
clean up Finder window 1 by name
set position of Finder window 1 to {410, 55}
set bounds of Finder window 1 to {410, 55, 975, 455}
close Finder window 1
close Finder window 1
end tell
How do I make it so the Finder will remember the location and position?Hello
Here is a script that I use daily.
The code used to force the Finder to "remember" the window position seems a bit tricky. If I remember well I found it on MacScripter.
As far as the Finder is not corrected, we must use this kind of trickery.

Finder Window closes when File is Deleted in 10.6 Server
I'm running OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on an XServe serving 50 Mac Pros. I work with two finder windows open in column view with no side bar. This allows me to navigate and move files from any of 50 computers I have mounted to my server to another computer.
If there is a folder on the Desktop of one of the many computers I'm connected to, and it's the only thing on that Desktop of that computer, when I delete the folder the finder window I deleted the file from closes. In 10.5 my two windows would remain open no matter what I deleted. If there are other things on the Desktop the finder window will stay open when I delete any of the files, unless I delete them all and then the window will close.
Also if a drive is mounted and I unmount the drive in column view, this will close my finder window as well, even though all my other computers are still mounted in that window. In Leopard (10.5), if I unmounted a drive or deleted files off any computer mounted to my server, that window would remain open.
Furthermore, in column view with a side bar, when I delete the only folder on a computer's Desktop my finder window will not close, but it will kick me back to the side bar instead of leaving me on the desktop of the computer I was deleting the file off of. This is just about annoying as having the window close, because I still have to navigate back to the computer I was working on.
I think it's just a new way 10.6 handles this stuff. It seems if there is nothing left in a folder (such as a Desktop) then Snow Leopard assumes you don't need that window open and closes it. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.By the way, I'm running Snow Leopard Server, not simply Snow Leopard.

When I bought my Macbook Air in 2011, ( leopard on purchase - now mountain lion) I discovered how to close open Finder windows by double clicking at the top of the window. I have just bought an iMac (mountain lion) and for the life of me cant find out how to do the same. Finder preferences are no help. Can anyone out there be of some?
Thanks in advanceI know what you are referring to. In both cases, the window is minimized, but on your MacBook Air, your Finder window is minimized onto the Finder icon, and on the iMac, on the right side of the Dock.
To change this on your iMac, open System Preferences > Dock, and mark "Minimize windows into application icon" -
Changing filename causes all finder windows to close
changing a filename causes all open finder windows to close and desktop icons to briefly disappear. This problem just started. Anybody have this problem?
Thanks, Tim.I rarely use Stuffit and just knew about the issue from remembering reading about it a week ago. I'd check Stuffit's site for news about a newer version.
