Close tab "cross" disappeared

Hey the cross on a side of a tab in safari disappeared. So I cant close it with a single click anymore.
Does anyone know help?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

Close tab buttons disappeared

on safari the little x buttons used to close tabs has disappeared. how do I fix this?

The same thing is happening to mine. The 'x' button on active tabs is disappearing and then not coming back. I have to press contol + click to get a drop down menu in order to close it out. How do I get my Xs back?
On a side note, for some reason command Q won't quit Safari, and when I go to the File menu, Quit Safari is grayed out (not able to click it).
How do I fix these problems?

Click boxes to close tabs have disappeared!

I am using Safari 7.0.3 with OS 10.9.2
You know the little boxes that you can click on to close tabs in Safari? Over the weekend, they disappeared. I hover my cursor over the tab, but the little click boxes don't appear. I try clicking where the boxes used to appear, and nothing happens.
Anybody know where those little click boxes went to? And, what I really want to know, how do I make them come back?

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

I close tabs, it disappears, but can still ctrl+tab to them. Then they won't close.

Sometimes, when I close a tab, the next tabbed site will be displayed, and it will disappear from the row of tabs on top, as if it really closed. But when I ctrl+tab or ctrl+shift+tab, it remains one of the sites I cycle through. It won't close. Usually, if I close firefox, this goes away, but sometimes the same phantom site(s) remain even after restarting firefox.

Close tab icon "X" disappeared.

The close tab icon "X" has disappeared from my firefox 4.0, how do i get it back? I've not change any setting nor install any tab-related add-ons. thanks.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Recently the close tab function in safari has disappeared.

Recently the close tab function in safari has disappeared and now I have to close tabs by right clicking, needless to say it's driving me mad. Is there a way I can sort this out?

My Safari tabs were missing the "x" close button as well.
What ended up working for me was ->Force Quit->Safari.
I noticed quitting Safari from the Dock does not completely close it out, and from the Safari->Quit Safari menu option is grayed out. Force quit seemed to be the only way to end it.

When closing a screen I have, in the past, used the File button [top left] this produced the drop down menu, there was the option to "CLOSE TAB", which I used, this closed the screen but left Firefox open, this option has now disappeared, the only way I can close a screen now is to exit back to the Desktop and reopen Firefox.

Thanks for the prompt response, unfortunately whilst the solution you proposed works on most tabs when I am down to the last one absolutely nothing I do will get rid of it, at present I cannot close the Mozilla Add-ons Manager tab. I have tried your suggestion followed by clicking the cross in the top right of the screen, I have also tried File and then exit. But when I next click onto the Mozilla icon it returns to the last tab shown on the screen.

Why has "Pin as App Tab" command disappeared when I right click on a web site?

Very much like FF4 and especially App Tabs. Today when I relaunched FF (1) App Tabs have disappeared (I have been reading how to keep them when I reopen FF) and (2) I no longer have a "Pin as App Tab" command when I right click on a web site I want to pin. Anyone got any clues? I am wondering if there is a conflict with Cooliris?

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Why would my Acrobat tab keep disappearing from my Office programs?

Every so often, my Acrobat tab keeps disappearing from my Office programs. It seems totally random, but happens when I am actually using the tool to convert a word doc or excel spreadsheet to PDF. I am using Office 2007 Professional and Adobe Acrobat XI Pro.
I have no problems getting the Acrobat tab back by doing the following:
1. Close the affected Office program (ie Word, Excel etc)
2. Reopen the affected Office program as Administrator.
3. Go into Options >Add-Ins> COM addins and delete the existing Acrobat PDFMaker COM Addin.
4. Click OKs and close the program.
5. Reopen as Administrator and go back to Options >Add-Ins> COM addins and Add Acrobat PDFMaker COM Addin.
(The add in for me is stored at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\PDFMaker\Office and select the PDFMOfficeAddin.dll file. )
Once I add it back this way, it stays for sometimes up to 2 months, but then disappears again. I've had this happen in Word and Excel.
So getting it back is not an issue, but knowing what it happens in the first place and stopping that occurrence would be even better.

Yeah.. I just noticed I was missing stuff last week, and then realized that my Apple TV was not showing up in my iTunes device list. I'm just hoping that the silence on this issue from Apple is a sign that they are getting ready to push out an update to correct either itunes or Apple TV. I've read lots of complaints, and just a few remedies. I've tried the remedies (including the one on the Apple TV support site) and none of them work for me. I have noticed one thing that that I wanted to try. In iTunes->Preferences->Apple TV I have an Apple TV in the "Apple TV's connected to iTunes" window, that shows a status of syncing. Since I don't have an Apple TV in the device list, and my Apple TV was reset days ago so it is giving me the code to enter into iTunes, can I assume that this item can and should be deleted. I don't think this is going to solve my problem, but it looks like a good next step. Any suggestions?

What happened to my "Close Tab" button?

All of a sudden I can no longer close a Firefox window by using the "Close Tab" button normally found under the File menu in the task bar. It just seems to have disappeared! If I have 2 windows open at the same time, I can't close just one of them. Instead, the only option I now have is to use the CLOSE button (red X), which then immediately closes BOTH my windows! Very annoying.

Hi. Is there a mouse shortcut for closing a safari tab in Yosemite? I have a gaming mouse with more than enough buttons and am trying to set one to closing tabs. I do also have a magic mouse if there's a way to set it up with that. Either would be helpful. Anybody know how/where to look to do so? Thanks in advance.

Yes, I have tried like 5 tomes, the green cross is activated, also I tried firs adding another part of the toolbar to check that I am doing it correctly and then I selected the default set in the default set was updated in the browser.
but this happens: it worked only once, for one active browser. only in this window the "x" cross appeared in every tab.
I closed totally safari and opened it again but there are no "x" cross again in the tabs..
If I shutdown the computer, then I restarted and there is no "x" cross again in the tabs.
here the strange thing: If I repeat the process to drag the default set, nothing happens, there is no more "x" cross in any tab.
Also if I drag another item, press done, then drag the default toolbar and then press done..there is no "x" cross in any tab.
If I close safari and press safari there are no "x" cross again.
but if I press reopen windows from last session, the window that was active and had set the "x" appeared correctly, but all the other windows appera without the "x". Then I closed all safari, and open it again, but there are no "x" cross again...
If I press any tab with the "x" and select move tab to a new window, there are no "x" cross.
If I close all safari and open again, there are no "x" cross...
so, how set the "x" cross or close tab button ?

I have no additional information. My file tab has been redone and it does not lists a "close tab" which is a real pain when trying to look at houses and can't close a tab but it exits as only option, can i go to the previous system as this is not working for me

I am not entirely sure hat you are trying to do.
If you have several tabs open in firefox the active tab will contain a cross and can be closed by clicking that cross. The others do not display crosses but if right clicked give options to close, or to close other tabs.

How can I enable the center mouse click to open and close tabs in Firefox and Chrome?

I have a MacBook Pro Model A1261 purchased in 2009. On my other mac at work (and my PC) I can center click to open a link in a new tab while in Chrome or FireFox, and also to close a tab by clicking on it in the tabs at the top. I am using an external USB mouse on my MacBook Pro and when I click the center scroll wheel it brings up the dashboard. I looked in the settings but wasn't able to find a way to change that setting for the center button to open and close tabs in my web browser. Is there a way? Please help!

You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the about:config page.

Where did Close Tab and Close Window under the File tab go? I end up with all these open windows or exiting altogether.

Under the File tab, I no longer see Close Tab or Close Window. Thus, I end up with a lot of open windows, because if I click File Exit, I'm logged out.

You need to create a file userChrome.css in the chrome folder in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and paste the above posted code in the file. 
You can use the ChromEdit Plus extension to make it easier to edit the file.
You can access the profile folder via this button:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
That code will cause all hidden menu entries to get visible all the time, so you can use the mouse to open the menus and do not need to use the keyboard.

I'm on Firefox 3.6.21, and I got this problem today after a Greasemonkey update (To version 0.9.10, apparently).
Disabling Greasemonkey solved the problem, and re-enabling it reproduced the problem (middle-clicking links to open in new tab did not work, merely highlighted the link).
I should also note that while Greasemonkey was enabled and the bug was affecting me, Ctrl+Click to open links in new tabs was also broken.

EDIT 2: GREASEMONKEY HAS NOW BEEN UPDATED with a workaround to fix the problem. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/versions/ to install the update manually.
