Close tabs and open links in new tab with middle click

Until recently I was able to close tabs by middle clicking them or open new tabs by middle clicking them. Recently however Firefox either is no longer recognizing my middle clicks or is not processing them in the same way.
I tried looking in the about:config functions for functions including 'middle' in an attempt to find the configuration option for this but didn't find anything. I need to identify how to configure it first so I can attempt that.

I have this problem as well, and tried basically everything. Even a fresh install (didn't help). I have this issue (using the same Logitech LX3) since I switched from Firefox 3.x to 4.x and now 5.x, all on Windows 7.
Basically, the middle mouse button behavior is totally unreliable. Most of the times, it doesn't work at all. However, sometimes it does, but then it may take up many seconds (keeping the middle button pressed) until the tab finally opens... and then it often opens multi. Sometimes the tab(s) open after X seconds while the middle mouse button is still pressed, sometimes it opens after the button was released.
It seems to be a bit better in Private Browsing mode, though. Can't really be more specific: sometimes the middle mouse button opens the new tab after seconds in "using tab x, page y, link z", while it doesn't work on exactely that same page on "using tab x, page y, link z" after doing nothing for 5 minutes.

I want to know how to switch "open link in new tab" and "open link in new Windows" like it was in Firefox 3.
If you mousehover on a link and press the right mousebutton.

Sara, I started having the same problem yesterday. In my case I was able to remedy it by disabling FasterFox 3.9.81. If you don't have that installed, I would recommend turning off your extensions (one by one), restarting firefox, and testing until you find the offender. Hope that helps!

  • Safari navigates to top screen during browsing and opening link on new tab...

    Hi,
This happens during browsing facebook mainly..
    Thanks

    Hi,
The browser has to "cache" the data from that page in order for it to show up in History. You can't go back to a page you haven't visited.

  • Feature of opening link in new tab when middle-click it has just dissapeared.

Hello! Feature of opening link in new tab when middle-click it has just dissapeared; now, when I middle-click the link, nothing happens - no new tab, simply nothing! It's not issue with a mouse, I've tried another mouse, and it's the same, and middle click works in other browsers; right click and "Open link in new tab" (as well as other options from context menu) work properly. Any idea what happened? Thanks!

Well, something of your advices helped; I don't know which one exactly, but it works again now. Thanks a lot, guys!
Edit: Errrm, I didn't know exactly how this works, so I had the idea to click "Solved it" button next to both above posts, as I really was not sure which one solved my issue; now, as I clicked the button next to first answer, I see it appears as chosen answer, and no more button next to second answer; sorry, Cor-el; thanks to both for your willingness to help anyway!

  • When I click to open anything I get a box saying open link in new window, open link in new tab, download linked file etc.  When I go to close anything I get hide toolbar, customize toolbar.  It takes  3-5 clicks and it will finally close.

In Firefox Options / Privacy be sure "Remember download history" is checked. To see all of the options on that panel, "Firefox will" must be set to "Use custom settings for history".
To find your OS information, on your Windows desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, choose Properties, under System on that small window is info about your OS.

  • When I right click on a link "Open link in new tab" since a few days, it "jumps over" the tab to the right and opens in the tab next to that. How can I change this back to opening in the tab next to the page from which I opened as it used to be?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Right-clicking on links and selecting "Open Link in New Tab" opens a blank tab.

Seems like opening links in new tabs just doesn't work in any fashion. I right-clicked a link (several, actually) to open it in a new tab. It opened a blank tab. No sign of ever acknowledging the link, nothing in the URL bar. Just blank.
Wonder if this is related to my earlier question about opening links from Thunderbird being broken as well...

    1. Install the Menu Editor add-on from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/menu-editor/ .
    2. After the installation, go to Firefox> add-ons (or simply use Ctrl+Shift+A)
    3. Go to the Menu Editor "Options"
    4. In the "Main context menu," simply grab the "Open link in New Tab" and place it below the "Open Link in New Window"
    5. and Voila! You may also change other menu options if you want to!
I tried jay_ff method first and found that indeed changing the Main Context Menu did cause the hotlink context menu to change as well.

  • When I right click and select open link in new tab, it leaves the page I am on and takes me to the first tab to the right

I usually have many tabs open when I read the news, and it is nice to select open links in new tabs while scrolling through a news' home page. Lately, however, Mozilla has been opening the new tab, but switches the page I am viewing to the first tab to the right of the home page. For example, I had ESPN.com open, and then a few Facebook tabs after that to the right. Whenever I would select open link in new tab, the tab I was viewing would switch from ESPN.com to the first Facebook tab to the right, and the new tab would open a little further down the line. Any chance anyone knows how to fix this?

  • Firefox Will not open a link in a new tab after I right click and then click on open link in new tab

When I right click A bunch of new options pop up and firfox will not open links in new tabs. Safe mode did nothing.

What do you mean with ''A bunch of new options pop up"''?
Can you open a new tab by clicking the plus button on the Tab bar?
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

  • Why was the open link in new tab option removed in favor of a right click? This is inefficient and a step backwards in functionality.

This was an option on previous versions of Firefox and its annoying to right click to open in a new tab when it was a native function in prior versions.

hai i am using firefox 3.6.When right clicking on a link and a window opens up, i want it to ask me "Open Link in New tab" first, not second.

First, you are using a version of Firefox that is very old and outdated. Please update to at least Firefox 3.6.27, or more preferably, update to Firefox 10.0.2. There are lots of bug fixes, security improvements, and much improved performance in Firefox 10.
After you do that, try seeing if you are still having a problem. If you are, is this that when you try to select "Open in a new tab" it opens in a new window instead? Or something else?

  • Put back "Open Link in New Window" first and default, rather than "Open Link in New Tab" in Safari 6.1

I do not like the order of the context menu changes in Safari 6.1.  I have become accustomed to using "Open Link In New Window" first in the context list, rather than the new "Open Link In New Tab".  I do not wish to use Tabs.  How may I remove this?

Well, I solved it just after I posted this.  I opened up the Safari Preferences, then went to the TABS section, and set "Open pages in tabs instead of windows: to NEVER", and unchecked "⌘-click opens a link in a new tab".   That set it back to open in new windows.
Tabs work if I am making quick tabs to refer to something.  Horrible if I want to compare two websites side by side.  So, by disabling the auto TAB function, I'm back to the way I prefer my browser to work, rather than the way something thinks I ought to use it.
Don't care about having all my browsers behavior the same.  If I wanted that, I would have run those browsers.

  • Right-clicking Open Link in New Tab or Window doesn't work

After upgrading to the latest version, 30.0, the right-click functions to Open link in New Tab or New Window stopped working. When I click the link that I would like to open in new tab or window, the right click window appears, I click on the desired function, and the right click window closes and nothing happens.
I restarted in safe mode and the problem remains. I am using Windows XP. I also tried uninstalling Firefox and then doing a clean re-install and that didn't help.
For now I went back to using version 29.0.1. Yes, I know that it isn't as safe but I can't use Version 30. without the right-click options!!!
I really wish the developers would focus on fixing bugs, vulnerabilities, etc. and leave the basic functions alone! The old saying if it isn't broken don't "fix" it!!!!!

This didn't fix the problem so I have decided to revert to the previous version: 24.6.0 esr. Maybe when version 31 or 32 come around I come back to the "latest" version?
