  • Closed caption help

I have a DVCAM master that is encoded for closed captioning. My client would like a DVD with closed captioning. Is this a simple matter of capturing the master tape in FCP and importing the file into DVD SP and burning a copy or is there more to it? Any help would be appreciated.
    dual 2GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

True closed captioning is part of the video, (line 21.) DV video encodes the caption data as meta data and is stored as a resource in the DV QT file.
That data can only be retrieved if the DV program is run through a software that can read the meta data resource. The software that can do that is Mac Caption Pro.
Once you have captured the video from the DV tape, to a DV QT file, that file can then be imported into Mac caption Pro and decoded and captured to a .scc file, (Scenarist_SCC V1.0.)
The .scc file can then be brought into DVD SP through the line 21 option for closed captioning in the track inspector, under the other tab.
Mac Caption Pro also allows you to merge the .scc file with a already existing Mpeg2 file and then import the Mpeg2 file normally, with captioning already part of the Mpeg2 file, (no need to use the line 21 option in DVD SP.)
The software is very expensive $5000.00, but way cheeper than a hardware system for captioning. Educational facilities receive a discount upon request.
    There URL: http://www.ccaption.com/
If you can get the program owners to send you a .scc file, that is timecoded to the copy of the program you have, then you can just use the line 21 option of DVD SP to import the captioning.

  • Closed Captioning help

Working on a project which i've added click boxes to pause the audio until the user clicks to start.  I also have closed caption tied to that audio.  When preview and/or publish, when user enters slide and possibly takes an extra moment to start the audio, the closed captions are already up and running.  Now the audio and captions are out of synch.  Is there a way or reason for the captions to be paused along with the audio that it's attached to?
    Thanks
    Tony

I looked at various options too. IE. using voice recognition to produce a text file then using MacCaption to encode it on line 21. I understand MacCaption produces a quicktime file that can be brought into FCP and rendered. When printing to tape it will entered into line 21 in you use an approved card like AJA, media 100, Targa, etc (these cards know how to handle this since this a problem with DV at 720x480. CC likes 720x486 ie DVCPRO 50, Digi Beta etc.
However, my local station (UPN network) said they would do our 30 min. show for $85 each. As you could expect, my research ended there.

  • Closed Captions don't appear when I play my video exported with Premiere Pro CC

So, I've spent some time researching this, but can't seem to get anywhere.  I'm fairly new to Premiere Pro and I've created a sequence with closed captions.  I've tried exporting several different ways (Quicktime, H264, etc.).  I've also been careful to include a sidecar closed caption file or to embed the closed captions within the video when exporting using Quicktime.  I've also been sure that both files (the movie and the scc file) are in the same place.  I've tried playing different versions of the exported video on Quicktime Player and VLC, but have had no luck getting the closed captions to appear.  In Quicktime player I've tried it with the closed captions activated, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.  In VLC I've tried the Advanced Open option which enables you to select the subtitles file you want to load with the movie.  Once again, no luck.  I've tried dragging and dropping the .scc file onto the movie while it plays.  I've tried selecting a Subtitle track using the video drop-down menu.  Once again, no luck.  I've tried exporting from Premiere Pro with the sidecar file as a .mcc file and that didn't work either.  I even tried converting the .scc file to an .srt file via some online app.
Anyway, I'm stumped.  All I want to do is to get my movie to play with the subtitles with some simple application.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Sorry, Fritz. It's been a while since I really looked at the Closed Captioning help page, and I just assumed that the New Caption workflow is covered there. And a second apology because the state of that page is at least partly my fault insofar as I promised our technical writer months ago that I'd help flesh out this page.
You're not doing anything wrong when it comes to adjusting the start/end times for caption blocks. Caption tracks in the Timeline are basically display-only. The apparent handles are really just indicators; they're not interactive. I believe it's on our roadmap to make them interactive, but I have no idea where that enhancement sits in the priority order.
I'm not sure what you mean about "each caption track block [being] limited to just over 30 seconds." If there's a maximum duration for a caption clip, it's probably up at 12 or 24 hours. I've worked with several that are longer than an hour. As for individual caption blocks within a clip, my memory has grown fuzzy in the months since I worked on the feature, but I think the program does not enforce a limit on the duration you can give a block. However, there may be a limit on how long a given caption block will actually get displayed. I thought that limit was 15 seconds, but I just did a test with blocks of 10, 20, and 40 seconds, and all of them had the full assigned duration in the encoded output. Could be that the limit I'm thinking of is standard-specific... Come Monday, I'll have to check with colleagues who have remained closer to the feature set.
Note that if you add a caption clip to a sequence before you've finished adding the blocks, then you'll need to trim out the clip after increasing its duration by adding blocks.
Lastly, although Premiere supports authoring captions from scratch, the feature set was conceived chiefly for importing captions created in a third-party authoring tool and, as needed, revising the content and adjusting the timing.

  • New to OSMF - have several questions (closed captions, tutorial, etc), please help!

    Hello,
I came across OSMF this week and am extremely curious to learn more about this for my job and personal work/knowledge. If any of these questions could be answered I will be ever-so grateful!! Thank you.
    1) Anyone know of or have any information or tutorials or plug-ins on how to make OSMF videos work with closed captions for single or a multi-video player gallery for each video? (captions - this is very important for my job)
    2) Does anyone know of any good and easy to understand (I'm mid-level in AS3) tutorials and/or source files on how to build an OSMF player preferably in Flash?
    3) I know Flash Builder (Flex) some, but am better with Flash (CS4/5), but a lot of what I see is for Flex... what is preferred for OSMF - Flex or Flash or it doesn't matter?
    4) I searched Amazon.com, but couldn't find - are there any books for OSMF?
Sorry I posed this in Developers also, but unsure which is appropriate for my questions. Thank you, again.

    Hi, Duane!
This may help with your questions re: captions..
    http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/osmf.adobe/index.php?title=Captions
As for tutorials, we've got some links to ones created by members of the community here:
    http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/osmf.adobe/index.php?title=osmf.adobe:Community_Port al
And, as far as OSMF books, there aren't any third-party ones of which I'm aware. You can download a PDF of Adobe's OSMF Dev Guide here (the PDF link is at the upper right):
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/OSMF/1.0/Dev/index.html
Or, you can view the very same content in topic-by-topic form at the wiki in the links above.
Best of luck with your endeavors!

  • CP8 Interactions and slides with audio and closed captions - not working well - please help

Okay, I am using cp8 on a windows 8 64 bit machine. I have placed an interaction on a slide. I also have audio on that slide and closed captions.
When I get to the slide, the audio does not play because the mere fact that the interaction is on there makes the slide pause upon enter. I could have the student click play on the playbar to go, but that is not required on slides without interactions, so I don't like that solution. I also could do an On Enter slide Play Audio and pick the wav file, but then the closed captions don't show up.
So, the question is, how do I have the slide automatically play the audio at the slide level without the student having to click the play button to go?? Slides with interactions should behave just like other slides with objects/widgets on them. This auto pausing thing is driving me nuts!
    Thanks,
      Lori

Lori, this is puzzling! Are you talking about one of the learning interactions included with Captivate? If yes, which one? My puzzlement is due to the fact that what you described is what happened in CP6: interaction paused slide at first frame (I had a workaround for audio). But since CP7 interactions do not pause any slide, you'll have to provide the pause yourself. There are some exceptions (games).

  • Closed Captioning saga.. need some help!

    Hi,
I have the CC information available to me as a separate Line21 movie file and a .SCC file. (this was exported using this software http://unisay.com/subtitlersw.htm)
I added the Line21 file to my video track in FCP and used compressor to create the final MPEG2 file for DVDSP.
    So, my questions are:
    - Does MPEG2 preserve the Line21 data?
    - Do I need to also add the .SCC file to the video track in DVDSP?
    Thanks;
    John

    Hi John,
Sorry I couldn't respond in a more timely manner, deadlines and all that.
I see you're still having an issue with CC files in DVDSP. I thought I'd jump back in and see if I can shed some more light.
As I read the thread, a couple of things occur to me.
To quote a line from an earlier message, "- Out of FCP, I exported to Compressor and brought the media files (m2v and audio file) into DVDSP. Set the .scc file to the track and burned the DVD. This didn't work."
I'm a bit surprised as this is exactly the way it should work and has for me. In my experience, I always get an error message in the log during the build process if there's anything the tiniest bit wrong with the SCC file. Particularly time code overlaps and time codes out of range (not matching the TC of the video file). Did you get any type of error message in the log when you did the build?
Another quote, "I can see the captions using Apple's DVD player, but I can't see them when playing them on two different DVD players!! Not sure what's going on. I kept trying to turn on the captions, but nothing would show up. It ONLY shows up on the mac using dvd player. Any ideas?"
You should be aware for a future project that Apple's DVD Player DOES NOT show all styles of Closed Captioning, particularly the roll-up kind. I learned this lesson the hard way when I ranted to a SCC file supplier that their file was bogus because I was QCing the final using DVD Player. Later, when I burned a disc and checked it on a standard DVD player and TV, there they were. I had enough egg on my face for several omelets.
It would seem if the CC text showed up in DVD Player, the file is properly encoded as user bits in the MPEG file. Therefore, when you're playing the DVD in a stand-alone player, I suspect that you may not be viewing them on a TV that has a CC decoder in it. Remember, CC decoding was not mandated in new TVs until 1990 and most tech monitors have no capability to decode it either. Also, while the DVD player is extracting the CC data from the MPEG file, it's the TV (or monitor) that's actually decoding and displaying the CC text from line 21, not the DVD player. If you're using a tech monitor or an older TV to check the final disc, you would have to use an external decoder box in line with the video signal to see the CC text. Finally, not all DVD players "look" for the CC data in the MPEG file user bits and may simply ignore it. But it's hard to believe any newer or a least name-brand player would do this.
On another issue, personally I wouldn't bother monkeying around with STL files for handling CC. It's OK for subtitles placed in a subtitle track of DVDSP, but that's not the same as true CC. In short, I've never had a problem with a correctly formated "Scenarist_SCC V1.0" file as long as there were no time code issues with the m2v track.
I did a little surfing and came across this informative document. You might want to have a look:
    http://www.dvdmadeeasy.com/downloads/acrobat/PreparingLine21.pdf
And if you really want SCC info overload go here:
    http://www.geocities.com/mcpoodle43/SCCTOOLS/DOCS/SCCFORMAT.HTML
I sincerely hope some of this helps. It appears like you're doing everything right. Check for error messages on the build and view the final product on a DVD player and TV combination that you're quite sure is capable of accessing and decoding CC. (Hey, turn on the TV, tune to any network channel, and turn on the CC with your remote or on-screen set up guide. If it's there, it's there!)

  • Help with closed captioning

Does anyone know how to correct the following issue: the
closed captioning works the first time you play the slide. However,
if I return to the slide and replay it, the close captioning no
    longer appears. Any ideas?

    Welcome to our community, mkovner08
When you say the Closed Captioning no longer appears, do you
mean to say that the area where it would appear no longer has the
highlighted section? Or is the section visible, but the Closed
Captioning text refuses to be presented on the section as it
    normally is?
I've tested here on my own PC and it seems to work with no
issue. I can play a slide over and over and see Closed Captioning.
Perhaps try restarting Captivate or clearing the Temp files and
    rebooting the PC?
    Cheers... Rick

  • HT202157 In Settings on Apple TV2, while looking for Closed Captions, I accidentally changed the default Language to something I cannot decipher. I cannot read the lists to find English. Help?

Using AppleTV2, in Settings looking for closed caption aoption, I accidently changed the default language from English to something with hieroglyphics. How do I revert to English?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5255
Settings is the rightmost tab at the top.
Settings > General is the first choice under it.
Settings > General > Language should hopefully be the 11th item down, and there you should find English.

  • Embedded closed captions not viewable

I have read most of the threads on embedded closed captions in this forum and after experiencing similar problems I have come to the conclusion that embedding captions in QT .mov files is not properly implemented. I could be wrong. I hope someone can show that is the case.
    Steps taken:
    1) created a closed caption track in a 2:40 minute Video as the top level video track (V4 in my case) using the CEA 608 CC1 caption stream. Captions show up in the program window properly enabled.
    2) Exported the entire clip directly from Premier Pro CC 2014  as a Quicktime .mov file with captions "embedded in Output file" (also tried exporting through Media Encoder--same results noted below).
Closed captions DO NOT show up in the resulting .mov file when played in Quicktime Player 10.3 on a Mac running OSX 10.9.5, even with subtitles set to "automatic"
Closed captions DO NOT show up in VLC Media Player 2.1.5 or 2.0.5.
Closed captions DO NOT show up when the .mov file is imported into an iPad Air running IOS 10.1.1 and played in Safari. This is my target destination and is critical.
Closed captions DO show up when the mov file is re-imported into Premier Pro and that clip is active in the preview window.
Closed captions DO show up when the .mov file is played on Quicktime Player 7 when "Show closed captioning" is active in the "View" menu. Quicktime Player 7 reveals that a "Closed Captions" video track exists as track #3 in the mov file under "Movie Properties".
I have uploaded the .mov file discussed above and made it available for public download if anyone can help me figure out how to get closed captioning to work. It is intended to be played on an iPad from a Self-Guided Tour app under development, which will play it using the native IOS video player when the file thumbnail is clicked. If the IOS Video Player is the same as QT Player 10.3 on a Mac, it defaults to "subtitles automatic". I don't know for certain, however.
Please note that this file, while a draft version, is the property of the California Automobile Museum which reserves all rights to its use including reposting, copying or modifying.

Thanks for the posting on the forums here. I downloaded your file and I looked at it in the following places:
    GENERAL PLAYBACK MAC
    10.8.5 (12F45)
    with QuickTime 10.3
I could see the closed captioning in the player.
    with PPRO CC 2014
Closed captioning intact and viewable in the app
    10.9 (13A603)
    with QuickTime 10.3 (727.1)
I could see the closed captioning in the player -- had to set it under View-> Subtitles-> English CC
    with PPRO CC 2014
Closed captioning intact and viewable in the app
    10.9 updated to 10.9.5 (13F34)
    with QuickTime 10.3 (727.4)
Closed captions are not being displayed, under any setting (choice is Off or AUTO) -- appears to be an update problem.
This is not just a failure of PPRO embedded closed caption MOVs, but also embedded MOVs from other closed caption authoring solutions like Telestream, and Annotation Edit.
I can log a bug on my side, but the problem is not in PPRO -- I'd check with Apple on this.
    with PPRO CC 2014
Closed captioning intact and viewable in the app
    VLC MEDIA PLAYER
It appears from my quick testing with VLC Media Player --  VLC Media Player is not detecting embedded closed captions in files from PPRO, nor from other industry standard closed caption authoring solutions, like from Telesteam, they make MacCaption and Caption Maker. I also checked embedded files from Annotation Edit, another widely used caption authoring solution, and VLC Media Player does not detect embedded closed captioning in those files, either.
I encourage you to look on the side of VLC Media Player for the failure to display closed captions.
    IPAD AIR PLAYBACK
In my testing, I did not test this equipment configuration. If you think you have a problem, please consider logging a bug.
Thanks again for posting here, I hope I answered your questions! If not, let me know, and I'll reply again.

  • TV Closed Captioning

Unable to remove closed captioning from the TV. This captioning just popped up about a week ago and cannot be eliminated. It is not response to toggling of the asterisk (CC) key, and does not respond to using Menu-Settings-Accessibility and turning the captioning off. Nothing seems to affect it, and it is uncertain how it began.
