Closed Captioning Problem - Disappears (Or Doesn't)

This is driving me crazy!!  I have a project in which on some slides the closed captioning disappears at the end of the slide audio, and on some slides the closed captioning stays up at the end of the slide audio.  In both cases I have a click box set to rest of slide and pause project until user clicks, along with a text caption set for rest of slide, and audio narration.  And that's it.
Why does the CC disappear on one slide at the end but not the other?  I want it to be consistent one way or the other.
I copied all the slides to a new project and it behaves the same way.  If I publish it to HTML5, the CC disappears at the end of all the slides.  If I publish it to SWF, I get the strange behavior above.
I have CP 7.0.1.237 on a Win 7 PC.
Thanks for any help you can give.

I am also encountering this exact same issue.  Also just like rgcunningham and DouglasDH5 I have Captivate 7.0.1.237 installed and am running Windows 7.  I have two coworkers with the same version of Captivate and Windows who have encountered the exact same issue with this project file (I am troubleshooting it for them actually).  I have tried to add silence and adjust the pause timing of the next button as Captiv8r suggested with no luck.  I have also tried several other things suggested in other threads about this same issue including switching the skin to a different default skin or deleting and re-importing the audio for the affected slide.  Neither of those suggestions worked either.  In my searching I have found several threads on this same issue going back through multiple Captivate versions back through at least version 5, and in every thread I have found so far the same workarounds are suggested and no successful result is reported.
Does anyone have any other suggestions that we all haven't tried yet or is this just a bug in the tool that we need to report to Adobe and move along?

  • Importing swf file with skin and closed captioning problems

I created a flv file in Preimere and I pulled it into flash to create close captioning.  When I publish it, it creates a swf file that I can open up on its own and it has the skin with the button to push to show the closed caption.  When I try to bring that file into captivate, it doesnt bring in the skin and it just automatically shows the captions.  How do I get it to bring the skin in with it?

Are you seeing this problem when you preview you project. or only after you publish it? If it is when you publish, is it in both the local version and/or in the web version?
Also, which version of Flash Catalyst? 1.0 or 5.5.?

  • Closed Caption colors disappear

The closed captions look fine in Premiere Pro. When I export the video as Quicktime using "embed in output file" the captions show up but the colors are gone. Mostly - one random line of red retainied its color.
I have several diffferent speakers plus a VO so I want to use the colors to distinguish the various speakers. Any clue why every color change I used in PP disappeared in the QT file and all of them are now white? (All, except that one line out of a 12 minute documenatry.)
    Thanks so much.

Yay! I did what you said and can manually turn select the closed captions box in the slide notes and that adds them back in. I still have to adjust the timing, but this is a HUGE time saver.
What am I doing wrong to lose them in the first place? I added them origninally by double clicking on the audio in the slide timeline and then selecting the Closed Captioning tab. I then cut the text out of our script (in another application) and paste it line by line into the CC tab. It seems to work because I see the CC in the published file.
Should I only add Closed Captions through slide notes? I never bothered with slide notes before.
Thanks for all your help- you've saved me a lot of time and frustration already!

  • Closed Captions don't appear when I play my video exported with Premiere Pro CC

So, I've spent some time researching this, but can't seem to get anywhere.  I'm fairly new to Premiere Pro and I've created a sequence with closed captions.  I've tried exporting several different ways (Quicktime, H264, etc.).  I've also been careful to include a sidecar closed caption file or to embed the closed captions within the video when exporting using Quicktime.  I've also been sure that both files (the movie and the scc file) are in the same place.  I've tried playing different versions of the exported video on Quicktime Player and VLC, but have had no luck getting the closed captions to appear.  In Quicktime player I've tried it with the closed captions activated, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.  In VLC I've tried the Advanced Open option which enables you to select the subtitles file you want to load with the movie.  Once again, no luck.  I've tried dragging and dropping the .scc file onto the movie while it plays.  I've tried selecting a Subtitle track using the video drop-down menu.  Once again, no luck.  I've tried exporting from Premiere Pro with the sidecar file as a .mcc file and that didn't work either.  I even tried converting the .scc file to an .srt file via some online app.
Anyway, I'm stumped.  All I want to do is to get my movie to play with the subtitles with some simple application.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Sorry, Fritz. It's been a while since I really looked at the Closed Captioning help page, and I just assumed that the New Caption workflow is covered there. And a second apology because the state of that page is at least partly my fault insofar as I promised our technical writer months ago that I'd help flesh out this page.
You're not doing anything wrong when it comes to adjusting the start/end times for caption blocks. Caption tracks in the Timeline are basically display-only. The apparent handles are really just indicators; they're not interactive. I believe it's on our roadmap to make them interactive, but I have no idea where that enhancement sits in the priority order.
I'm not sure what you mean about "each caption track block [being] limited to just over 30 seconds." If there's a maximum duration for a caption clip, it's probably up at 12 or 24 hours. I've worked with several that are longer than an hour. As for individual caption blocks within a clip, my memory has grown fuzzy in the months since I worked on the feature, but I think the program does not enforce a limit on the duration you can give a block. However, there may be a limit on how long a given caption block will actually get displayed. I thought that limit was 15 seconds, but I just did a test with blocks of 10, 20, and 40 seconds, and all of them had the full assigned duration in the encoded output. Could be that the limit I'm thinking of is standard-specific... Come Monday, I'll have to check with colleagues who have remained closer to the feature set.
Note that if you add a caption clip to a sequence before you've finished adding the blocks, then you'll need to trim out the clip after increasing its duration by adding blocks.
Lastly, although Premiere supports authoring captions from scratch, the feature set was conceived chiefly for importing captions created in a third-party authoring tool and, as needed, revising the content and adjusting the timing.

  • Best way to import closed captions

BACKGROUND: We record "webinars" using Microsoft LiveMeeting. They are available for download as Windows Media Video (WMV) files. Our government agency-approved contractor provides captions embedded in the windows media video, and they also provide a RTF transcript. Captivate 4 & 5 only seem to support FLV or F4V videos, not WMV. So, I import the WMV video to Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 to clean it up and edit it down. Then, I use the Media Encoder (version 5) to export a FLV video, which I will later import into a training module in Captivate 5.
However, when I edit the video in Premiere Pro, I can't seem to access those embedded captions. So, I use MAGpie (a free software application) to create captions using the existing transcript.
So, Captivate 4 & 5 have closed caption features, but there doesn't seem to be a way to import them from a text file, only to type them in one-by-one. That's fine when you have a 3 or 5 minute video, but when a professional transcription already exists, it would be much easier to just import all the text and then adjust the times.  I don't know if importing a caption file or text file with timcode is possible. I've tried to let Premiere Pro do it using the XMP Metadata transcription feature, but the audio quality in LiveMeeting isn't the best, and the transcription fails big time. It would be nice if Premiere Pro would allow you to import or edit captions too, but in CS4, it doesn't. If CS5 supports that I would consider upgrading; otherwise, it looks like back to manual entry.
I tried entering captions (manually) into a project, and then exporting it and searching for the captions I entered -- hoping to find a hidden file where all the captions are stored, but nothing came up in my search. So, I'm guessing the captions we provide are exported directly to the SWF file, and unavailable?
At this point, I'm thinking out loud and basically soliciting ideas from folks who may have ideas on a better, more effiicient method to get captions in my projects without having to manually enter them again after we've already paid a professional captioning service to provide us the text file and time code. Thank you in advance for any ideas and thoughts.
    Cheers!

Exporting as PDFs and importing into Motion is great. However, if your illustration is a grouping of paths intended for animation (e.g. a face with lips and eyes that you'd like to animate independently) then the PDF method can become fairly tedious.
Unfortunately Motion doesn't support Adobe Illustrator's compound path type. Coming from Adobe AfterEffects I was fairly disappointed in this since much of what I did in AfterEffects required animation of my compound path vector art. However, compound paths can be simulated using masks in Motion fairly easily and although this method has limitations it works very well.
Using Adobe's API I've written a free plugin for Illustrator called "Motionize" which allows an Illustrator user to select a shape in their Illustrator file and export it to a single Motion shape file. It supports simple shapes, lines, groups and compound paths as well. There is a sample file included to get you started and I would appreciate any feedback via my site as to how it can be improved.
It currently supports only one selected item at a time and does not support gradients though I am working on these issues. I hope it helps! I use this too so it's something under constant development.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

  • Chinese problem in closed captioning

Hi, I am running a problem using Premiere Pro CC that the Chinese language doesn't display properly in closed captions feature. Anyone having this issue? Is there a way to solve this problem?

I have the same problem on Mac. Do you use Mac as well? Did you ever solve it?

  • Problem with Closed Captioning

I'm using Cp 5.5.  I have a click box that's set to Open Url or file.  I have selected the options to open the new url in a new window, and I've de-selected the checkbox to Continue playing the project.  So when the user clicks the click box, a new window opens with the linked-to web page, and the main project, including the audio, pauses.  So far, so good.  But the problem is with the closed captioning.  If the closed captioning is turned on, it acts as if the audio has not paused (even though it has), and when the audio would have finished, the closed captioning goes away.  When the user returns to the main project and clicks the Play/Pause button in the playbar, the audio picks up where it paused, but the closed captioning has already disappeared for that slide.
Is this a bug?  Has anyone else seen this behavior?
    Thanks for any insights.
    Mister C.

There have previously been some discussions here and on other forums on CC issues and my understanding is:
    1) the SD STB (QIP2500) does not support CC. What you are seeing is your TV interpreting the CC data, not the STB. So if something is being dropped, it is the TV doing it, not the STB, or maybe the characters really are not there.
    2) The HD STBs do support CC. I have seen some complaints here and on other forums about the text not remaining on the screen long enough; I do not use CC myself, but I have turned it on and off a number of times, and my HD DVR seems to leave it up a reasonable amount of time, but that is just my impression.
There is no software upgrade available for now that I know of. There is supposed to be a new level later this year with new functions and fixes, I have no idea whether there is going to be anything in it that would address your CC issues.
Hope this maybe helps a little bit.

  • Problems with Closed Captioning (subtitles)

The last upgrade of the STB software fixed many of the problems with closed captioning.  However, there are still a number of problems.  For those of us with hearing impairment, it would really be nice if they got it right.  Now, at least all of the closed captioned dialog shows up (which it didn't used to do -- before, it would overwrite itself on certain stations).  However, some of the dialog shows up on the screen for only a fraction of a second -- too fast to read it.  Please help us hearing impaired people!!!!!

  • HT4613 Is it normal that closed captions do not show in the trailers and other promos, even if they are present in the movie?  I don't want to pay to rent a movie that supposedly has CC if it doesn't show up on the samples.

I want to rent some iTunes movies with closed captions, but in order to confirm that the CCs work, tried watching the trailers first.  I have CCs enabled on the iPod touch, but no captions showed up on the trailers or promos.  Is this normal?  Can I be sure that if a movie is marked with CCs, that they will be there if I rent it?  Thanks.

    Hi Karen
Unfortunately you will likely end up implementing either a totally manual system (meaning you just add a line at the top of your topic with your breadcrumb trail as you wish to display it, then link as needed) or you will have to resort to some third party solution that isn't part of RoboHelp's features.
You might also take a moment and suggest to the RoboHelp development team that we need some flexibility with this aspect. (Link is in my sig)

  • Problem rendering closed caption video with PremierePro CC 2014

I am on a Mac running Yosemite and using Premiere Pro CC 2014.  No matter how I try to render video with closed captioning (embedded or with a side car file in various formats) I cannot render a file that contains the closed captioning.  I have followed the tutorials, but cannot produce a file that has readable closed captioning either in the Quicktime player nor when I import the generated file back into Premiere Pro.
    Any hidden tricks? Tips?  Help!

  • Problems with closed captioning

I'm watching Sons of Anarchy on apple tv - and I love it :-)
However - sometimes it's hard to hear what they are saying and it sometimes loose some important stuff (english is not my first language).
I switch on closed captioning which works flawless on the first episode I watch that day. OIn the next episode texts also shows - but the show in a new way with 3 lines of text and the last line always being updated and the rest pushed up. It's really confusing and can not be used as text :-(
    How can I fix this?

  • Closed Captioning not showing up at specified In / Out points

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded to a trial of 7.2.1 (I'm a *long* time CS user) and am having an issue with closed captioning that's got me pulling my hair out. Upon importing a .scc file and inspecting it in the captions tab, I have all the captions I'm expecting at the proper timecodes (for example if I look up the start of a line in the program window the start timecode matches the "In" timecode listed in the Captions tab).
However upon playing the timeline and turning on Closed Caption display - the captions are not displaying (nor disappearing) at the in/out timecodes listed in the caption tab. They're showing up (roughly) seven seconds later at the beginning of the program, and over 11 seconds late by the end of the program.
Does anyone have the foggiest idea how to resolve this? I guess it's possible it's just a player issue and the issue will correct itself on output, but that's not really comforting. I could do what I need on this job by renewing my license for some other software, but Premiere would be a more versitile use of my limited software upgrade budget - but only if it can actually do the job properly.

    Hi Mark and monstremoi,
With all the fiddling I've been doing in raw captioning files the fact that I didn't just try increasing the hight of the track is completely rediculous. Lo and behold, there are the handles! Once I could actually see the captions in the track I noticed something interesting - that the .scc and .xml files are being interpreted quite differently.
If I take the same caption source file and output one xml and one scc and lay them on top of each other, this is what it looks like:
The XML is starting immediately at timecode 0, even though the first start time should be 4:06 (weirdly the scc is actually starting at the right time code in this test, something it's refused to do previously).
If I manually set the offset of the first caption by forwarding the xml caption track to 4:06 we get this:
*This* XML track seems to play out synchronous with the program albeit with some odd formatting (it doesn't appear to be reading any of the font positioning information from the timed text file, it's just playing everything top frame, justified left.
Already though up above you can see though that although the SCC stars at the right timecode, it's starting to drift out of sync less than 30 seconds in - which doesn't make any sense when both have been output from the same 29.97 timebase source.
Monstremoi - to answer you questions, no I've not done any captioning work in premiere pro previously. I actually didn't even know it was a feature until I read about the improvements in CC. Most of our captioning files come from Annotation Edit (zeitanker.com). If they're not prepared in AnnotationEdit / AnnotationTranscriber, we usually do some conversion work through it before outputting (usually to set offsets or whatever if we're adding presentation cards or something).
Happy to send you files to pull apart - although I'd rather not post them as a forum d/l link. Do you have an e-mail I can send them to?
