"Closed Clam" question

I use the MacBook Pro attached to a HDTV. My question is.. If I have it in Closed Clam mode for a extended period of time will this hurt and damage the MacBook Pro ?

The machine cools itself a bit less efficiently in clamshell mode than when it's open. Cooling in clamshell mode requires the fans to run faster, other things being equal. If your MBP is doing a lot of processor-intensive and/or graphics-intensive work that causes it to run hot, it may run hotter in clamshell mode than open — and it certainly will if the fans are running at their maximum speed of about 6200 RPM. You probably won't want that happening hour after hour after hour. If you're using clamshell mode for heavy work or gaming, I strongly recommend installing iStat Pro or iStat Menus so you can keep a close eye on temperatures and fan speeds at least until you have a good idea of what the worst-case combination is. If your MBP is reaching 85-90°C or higher and staying there despite the fans' best efforts in clamshell mode, I recommend opening the display and leaving it open. If the machine stays below 80-85°C in clamshell mode, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Security, Encryption, Open/Closed Network question

    I use a 2010 model AirPort Extreme base station and set it up via Airport Utility. During setup, I selected "Closed" network and WPA2 encryption. I keep my "Guest Network" not enabled. In my residence, I can pick up signals from over 10 other networks going on in the neighborhood. I have both AirRadar 2.0.2 and iStumbler (Release 99). AirRadar says my network is "Open" and is not listed as "Secure" but lists "WPA2" as the encryption type. I've emailed their support for assistance understanding what seems to me to be conflicting information. iStumbler finds my network but as an "invisible" network. With the amount of wireless activity in my immediate area, I am very concerned about security issues.
    My question: Is there a procedure I can follow that will help me determine the robustness of the security currently in place of my network?
    I have only basic understanding of WiFi in general, security issues, and have only low to moderate computing skills. I'm no security expert, but a concerned consumer wanting to protect my family.
    Thank you in advance for assistance in this matter.

    a hidden (closed) network does not add much security, if any. there are freely available tools out there that will easily pick up a closed network. additionally, some wireless devices (iPod Touch, iPad) on your network may have problems picking up a hidden network when attempting to re-connect.
    your network will be well protected with WPA2 and a long, non-dictionary password made up of letters and numbers - it would take a determined hacker with plenty of time to crack a thus protected network.
    also make sure the extreme is password protected (again, choose a non-dictionary pw made up of letters and numbers.

  • Spry Collapsible panel - open and closed default question...

    I am using a Spry Collapsible panel in a vertical nav menu (DW CS4) and it's in a template for my site. I want it to be closed as default on the Home page, but when a visitor clicks to open it and selects their option, I would like it to remain open on the selected page - Is there a way to do this?
    Thank you all!

  • Closing connections question

    Hi, My application seems to be running out of memory despite closing the resultsets and connections used.
    I have a DBHelper class (DBHelper.java) with the following 2 methods:
    public Connection getConn(){
    // setups a JDBC connection and returns it
    // Close all connections
    public void cleanUp(){
    try{
    if(this.conn != null && !this.conn.isClosed()){
    this.production_Conn.close();
    catch(SQLException e){
    System.out.println(e.getMessage());
    So let's say if I have another class, e.g. Class A, that creates a Connection object using DBHelper.getConn() method, will calling DBHelper.cleanUp() be sufficient to close the connection? Or do i have to clear the reference object used inside Class A as well?
    Regards

    First off, are you sure you're out of memory is related to not closing connections? Mostly connections and ResultSets don't use that much memory so you usually run into database problems (too many open connections, too many sessions, etc.) before the Java app runs out of memory. Is it possible the leak is elsewhere?
    If you're sure its connection related maybe a problem with the helper class? Does getConn() create a new connection every time its called? If so, it looks like cleanUp() only closes the most recently opened connection - but without seeing the whole class I can't be sure.
    For example, the following would leave an open connection - though if the app is no longer referencing it, it should get garbage collected and closed eventually (though relying on this is bad form).
    class Bad {
       Connection con;
       public Connection getConn()
             con = // create connection
             return con;
       public void cleanUp()
             con.close();
       public static void main( String[] args )
             Bad b = new Bad();
             b.getConn();
             b.getConn();
             b.cleanUp();

  • Capital One Closed Accounts Question

    How long do closed capital one accounts appear on the account summary page when you log into their online tool? I ask because I have 5 capital one cards, 2 of them are now closed, but have been on there for a month.

    Indefinitely unless you speak with customer service and ask them to unlink the accounts and delete your profile. You would then have to recreate a profile and relink your active accounts.+1I just recently did this. I had to reset my autopay as well! I was still able to use my same login info though, which was nice. After you complete this only the active cards will show!

  • Closed network question?

    Hi,
    I have WPA2 Personal on my Airport Express.
    If I enable "closed network" will it appear when people are scanning for wireless network? Will it also not appear to Windows users?

    If I enable "closed network" will it appear when people are scanning for wireless network? Will it also not appear to Windows users?
    The network name is still broadcast between the router and any connected clients. Therefore it is easily discovered.
    "Closed network" is therefore a useless feature.

  • Closed captioning question

    I imported a ppt presentation to a project and added an audio file as the background. Can i put closed captioning on the slides? Captivate isn't letting me do that.

    Hi There,
    Once you have the audio in your Project then you can Insert the Closed Captioning in it. Go to Window>Slide Notes>Closed Captioning. Click on the '+' sign to add the Closed Captioning.

  • CS4 quitting - closing Flash question

    I just noticed something in CS4, if I have a project open I'm only able to close or close all. Quit Flash is greyed out. If I close or close all Quit Flash is still greyed out. This leaves me once choice, to quit Flash using the x red dot.
    I'm in OSX
    is this supposed to be like this?
    RD

    Flash can be fussy playing "locally." So some security setup may be needed on the PC playing this back.
    There are limitations to the flash from Encore. These have changed between version CS4 up through CS6.
    Customizing player controls became much more flexible with, I think, CS5, but perhaps 5.1 or CS6.

  • Display goes to Extended Desktop when awoke in Closed Clamshell on TV

    I use my 13" MBP in closed Clam Shell mode nearly all the time. I have it connected to my Sony 40" HDTV using the Griffin adapter and it works great most of the time.
    BUT sometimes when it comes off sleep mode. All my desktop icons are on the extended desktop (TV) and the dock is on the main screen (Closed Laptop Screen)
    So I have to Open up laptop. Make Laptop go to sleep. Close Laptop to closed clam shell again then everything is good on TV again.
    Not sure why this is happening. Probably 1 in 10 sleeps it does this.
    Any Ideas anyone.......
    Thanks in advance

    Yup. I have no issues using an external display in clamshell mode. It's only when I try to airplay to my apple tv while in this clamshell mode that I run into problems. So to clarify, there are 3 devices in my situation: my macbook, my external monitor, and my apple tv (which is connected to my hdtv of course, so 4 devices). Usually I just use my external monitor with my macbook closed. That works fine. But when I occasionally want to airplay to my apple tv as additional mirrored/extended monitor, I have to open up the macbook first to exit clamshell mode. Otherwise if I just go straight into airplay while still in clamshell mode, my hdtv shows a frozen image, my external monitor goes black and I have no choice but to manually turn off my macbook. Hope that makes sense. I think it would be easier if I could draw a diagram haha.

  • No "Clam shell" mode with MBP?

    I have used powerbook with an external display and mouse with the lid closed (clam shell mode -as they call it). But when I try the same with MBP, I get the display for a few seconds and the mouse stops responding and the system seems to sleep. Waking up with the external keyboard/mouse makes the cycle reapeat - losing the display and MBP sleeping in few seconds.
    No problem at all with the external display and mouse when the lid is open.
    Any insights?

    Do you have the power adapter plugged into the MacBook? If not, it will sleep after a few seconds.

  • Why do ports remain open after closing Firefox?

    I have noticed recently that several ports associated with Firefox remain open when the Firefox browser is closed. The number of open ports increases each time Firefox is opened and I have seen that the number of open ports has reached to more than 1,000 open ports at a time. The majority of the open ports are outbound TCP using port 443 and I also note a sustained increase in the network traffic after Firefox is closed.
    I have observed ports opened by the Explorer browser and noted that all of the ports opened with Explorer close when the Explorer browser is closed. The Firefox ports remain open when the browser is closed.
    Questions:
    - Should all open ports associated with an open Firefox browser close when the Firefox browser is closed?
    - Does Firefox have a setting that closes all open ports when the Firefox browser is closed?
    - Does XP have a setting that will close all open ports associated with Firefox when Firefox is closed?
    - Should I have security concerns about the accumulating open ports and increased network activity when using Firefox?
    Thanks.

    You can set the pref browser.download.manager.quitBehavior to 2 on the about:config page.
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.download.manager.quitBehavior
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />

    Yes it's perfectly safe and designed to be used that way, 90% of the time this one's used in a similar configuration. The only time the fans come on 100% is when I watch Flash-based items from YouTube or similar. I've never run it for any extended length of time with the fans at maximum I must admit but as long as the air flow is good there shouldn't be any problem.

  • Goes blank until i open clam shell again

    Hey guys i was wondering if anyone has experienced this yet. I Have setup a password for my computer when it is closed or goes into its sleep mode. When i go to open up the clamshell this usually happens. It will wake up I will see the password box and type in my password but then the screen will instantly go into its sleep mode again as if it was a closed clam shell. I then have to close it and repeat the process of typing in the password to get a sucessful login. It always works the second time but its just a little anoyance. If anyone out there knows how to fix this thanks in advance!

  • Closed Clamshell Problems

    Hey guys - I recently purchased a Logitch MX Performance Mouse and Logitech diNovo Edge keyboard.
    I am trying to use an external display and I can't get the darn thing to work with a closed clam shell. I followed Apple's steps...to no success.
    Some other things..
    - I put the MBP to sleep with the cmd-opt-eject and I could awaken the computer with my mouse w/ an open clam shell.
    - The mouse has a USB dangle - tried with the dangle, and tried with the mouse hardwired to the MBP neither worked
    - The keyboard is bluetooth - I have the settings at "Allow to Wake Up Computer" and indeed it does wake up the computer because when I open up the MBP - where it asks for the password, you can see there has been typing activity - however, this isn't showing up on my display - the display can't recognize it.
    Maybe its because I'm using a TV as a display - which works perfectly fine while my MBP is open.
    Any one go through this and figure out a way to make it work?
    TIA

    I got it to work!
    Tips for people having issues.
    Make sure your settings for displays are to "Mirrored", plug in your computer to the wall for power!!!, wait long enough.
    I did all of these things except for wait. It does take a minute so be calm - it will work.
