Closed display lid shuts downs MBP

Recently migrated to a New Macbook Pro but now when I close the display lid the MacBook Pro shuts down. It doesn't go to sleep. No flashing LED. Light goes out. I checked system preferences>energy saving but cannot find an option to set when lid closes to put computer to sleep or shut down. I've checked the manuals and help but only refers to the system preferences>energy saving settings which doesn't address this issue. Is there someplace where this option is set? Or is there something to reset to return to normal default sleep mode when lid is closed?
reboot to start - no sleep

Hi, oag. If the machine is shutting down completely and immediately when you close the display, that's not an option, it's a fault. You can't choose to have it do that, and it shouldn't do it under any circumstances. I would make a Genius Bar appointment to have the machine evaluated, and probably repaired or replaced.

  • MBP battery fully discharging  with the lid shut down overnight

I have noticed that even with the lid shut down the battery drains out in a few hours on a full charge which was not the case a few days ago. Secondly my MBP will not go into a sleep mode when i try to do so thru the remote, the screen goes blank for a few second then back again.
I did the last battery update.
Energy saver is on default setting.
No third party application is installed to do scheduled tasking.

    Hi
I have notices the following in my MBP too, thanks for the info. So now I have bigger issue's
    A. battery drain out in sleep mode.
    B. MBP not restoring itself but restarting.
After the battery update the safe sleep mode seems to have been disabled, on a complete battery drain out the MBP restarts dose not restore itself to stage when the lid was shut down as its supposed to do so from the contents of RAM image in the file /private var vm sleep-image
I have noticed a lot of users suggesting to change the hibernation-mode to 0 from 3 and nvramrc to false from true thru terminal command. What are the consequence of the same with regards to the links to it and is it good to go about changing the default settings?
One pays a good amount for a 15"MBP not to forget the add on's for stability, durability and usability. I give the MBP 100 in 100 in durability & usability, but its lacking in stability too many issues with regards to hardware or software.

  • Kernel Panic when closing laptop during shut down

It was the 2nd day I had my MBP and was jsut heading to sleep.
I had selected Apple > Shut Down to turn off the comp, and closed the laptop (I put the screen down and whatnot)
Few minutes passed, and I still saw the sleep light on for some reason. I opened the laptop back up, and there was the Kernel Panic screen.
I have no idea why it did this. Should I be worried?
It was just the 2nd day the MBP was in my possession and it would be really lame if problems were already arising THAT early.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The machine hadn't completed the shutdown process when you shut the lid and effectively told it to sleep. The conflict between the two tasks is what caused the panic. Wait until you see the MBP actually shut down before closing the lid. There are also some out there who suggest letting it cool a few minutes before shutting the lid to save the screen, which kind of makes sense depending on how intensively you'd been running it prior.

  • Shutting down MBP

I have read that Apple recommends only shutting down your system when it will not be used for a few days? Is this correct?
    Why?
This is my first MBP, but with previous Windows laptops Ive always shut down when not in use - even if its just for a few hours.
With the MBP I tend to shut down overnight....

It's more like there's no reason to shut down the machine. Even if it's not connected to power, with a full and new battery a MacBook can remain in sleep mode for up to a week, so if you're going to use it tomorrow morning there's no reason to shut it down.
There are in fact several reasons to not shut it down.
When you shut down your computer, you must wait for it to start back up and log in. If you simply let it sleep, what you have in the morning is an "instant-on" computer: Just wake it and you are on the network and ready to go. The Unix system that Mac OS X is based on is designed for constant use so you can run it for weeks or months. While other people complain about their computer's boot times, if you don't have to boot the computer your startup time is zero.
Also, when working on a project I usually have many windows arranged in several open apps. If I was to shut down, all those windows and apps must be closed, and when you start up again, all those apps must be relaunched and the project document windows re-opened and re-arranged. This probably adds up to hours of time over a year, and what a pain! Why put up with that?
There is also the question of caches. You will find that the slowest application launch is the first time you launch it after a restart. If you exit the app and start it again, you will find the second instance (and the third etc.) takes less time to start the app. This is because OS X is caching the application code. When you shut down, the cache is discarded, and you're back to the first-time slow start. So the more you shut down, the more you get to experience the slow, un-cached first-time app launches.
I sleep my MacBook Pro at night, and in the morning, not only do I have instant-on, but everything I was working on is exactly as I left it, and my frequently-used apps start instantly. I've gone on cross-country business trips where I never shut down the laptop during the entire week until I get home, because sleep is very reliable. And there is no need to wait for startup when I just want to check something quickly when on the move.
That's why it's recommended that you sleep instead of shut down.
You do want to shut down your MacBook if you will not use it for several days, because sleep mode will eventually drain the battery and you might lose unsaved work, even though there is a Safe Sleep feature.

  • Mini display is shutting down computer.

I've been using a mini display to HDMI cord for awhile and nothing has been wrong with it until the other day. When I plugged the mini display into the port on my 13 inch MacBook Pro, it just shut down. Does anyone know why?

This isn't a new RAM issue as I haven't installed any. When I re-installed all of the software from the ground up, I did an erase and install, so the whole thing should have been basically wiped before I installed the Mac software.

  • MacBook Pro Not Sleeping After Closing Display Lid

Hello, my less-than-1-month old MacBook Pro, for it's first time, did not to go to sleep after I closed the display lid (I noticed because my external mouse's LED indicator lights were still on, when they have always turned off when my Mac goes to sleep.
I left the Mac in this state for one hour or so. When I got back to use it, I noticed it was still running and the display had gotten a bit warmer. Does the heat damage the LCD display at all?
Has anyone else with a MacBook Pro experienced a similar occurrence?
Thanks a lot for your answers!

    Try this:
    1. Reset PRAM/NVRAM and SMC
    2. Delete
    a. (From the HD) /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    b. (From the HD) /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    c. (From the Home Folder) ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
the tilde [~] indicates your home user directory, i.e. /Users/username)
    d. Restarted computer
With the lid closed should not harm the computer.....when operating in clamshell mode this would be considered normal (heat buildup).

  • Help! G4 PowerBook "Detect Displays" triggers shut down message

I think I may have damaged my PowerBook by being too lax with a DVI/VGA adaptor when unplugging it from a VGA multimedia projector - I was in a hurry and removed it from the Mac whilst it was halfway through shutting down. (I've gotten away with this before but have since heard it's not a good thing to do, probably even worse if halfway through shut down).
If I choose Detect Displays now, it triggers the "Are you sure you want to shut the computer down?" message.
I also am unable to boot up successfully unless I hold the Option key during the initial black "chime" screen - the PowerBook appears to die with a squeak - both the HDD and SuperDrive lose power. Option-V won't give me a verbose boot unless I flash the PRAM, and then works only once.
(I've reinstalled Tiger 10.8.4, have run Disk Utility and have flashed the PRAM.)
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

First off, I think you got your numbers confused. There is no 10.8.4. There is 10.4.8. But that's immaterial here. You should try to run the hardware test than came with your Powerbook:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287
It may be you shorted the signal to the videochip, or the power supply.
Resetting the power manager may also work
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Be sure when booting off the disk, to disconnect all thrid party peripherals.

  • Hpcmpmgr.exe display when shutting down laptop

I originally posted this question under operating systems and software and was advised to post it under "printers".  I am new to this site and forum and hope to get some advice on the above mentioned problem.  I have a photosmart printer all in one, hp officejet J6480 series, my laptop is a Toshiba Satelitte L300D windows XP.  The laptop was purchased new in December 2008 and the printer all-in-one in Feb 2009.  I installed the printer and everthing worked fine.  The other day when I turned off my laptop I received a message box stating "End program"...hpcmpmgr.exe cannot end...click "end now" to close this program.  The only changes made to my system were the usual updates by windows etc.  I am using a USB hub and have this printer, speakers, and mouse pointer plugged into it.  Since my first post I have tried clicking on the "remove hardware" icon on the toolbar on the bottom right corner and selecting the device to remove it properly but I still get the same display when I turn off my laptop.  I would appreciate any suggestions on proper shut down technique to avoid this display.  Thank you.

Hi, thank you for your answer!
I was truly troubled about this issue because it was a 'clean' pre-installed system and I didn't do anything to it.
But it's good to hear, that I'm actually the only one having this kind of problem with Toshiba's new 550D.
Anyways: *It seems that I somehow managed to solve this csc-issue by uninstalling Microsoft Essentials and all its components with a removal tool.*
I'd be lucky if I'd found the culprit causing those error messages - if not, I'll try this csc.exe fix tool you just recommended.
    Thanks again!

  • Can overheating shut down MBP?

I have a new (late 2008) MBP 15 (2.53/4g/320hd). Please excuse the long story but I'm not sure what's important to know here. I was using the Boot Camp program to create the needed partition for Windows. About 30% through the formatting process the computer turned itself off! Just shut down. I picked it up and it was incredibly HOT on the upper part of the bottom (not the battery area). As a newbie, it took a lot of checking around to figure out what to do with a machine that now did nothing at startup except give me a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top left. I was finally able to get help so that I could get a disk start, and have gone through some steps to where I now have the OS back on and running. My concern is that I wasn't using any program except the formatting cycle, and it was almost too hot to put on my lap! Is that what shut the unit off (not to mention playing havoc with the disk)? Have I got a bigger problem with the CPU or the fan? I see a lot of comments about heat and am now concerned. (And this is without any heavy duty processing yet!) Thanks for any insight.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test to check for any problems with the thermal sensors or the fans. You can also check fan speed using iStatPro. I believe that your fans should idle at around 2000 RPM, and should speed up to 6000 RPM if the computer starts getting too warm. It almost sounds like your fans are not speeding up or maybe not running at all.
    Good luck!

  • FireFox doesn't appear to shut down completly when I quit, when restart it asked to exit FireFox eventhought it closed. When shut down computor error messeage comes up ' ns AppShell: Event Window end now and computor with shut down using 5.0.1

This happens after first time opened and closed. If I try to open from desk top, hour glass shows for a few seconds then goes away and FireFox doesn't open.
If after opened once and try to use 'url' link for e-mail (outlook express) it doesn't open the link and ties up e-mail.
Shut down computer and error box comes up 'ns AppShell: Event window' end now and computer will shut down.

  • Windows can't wake up after closing the lid of a MBP?

My Windows XP can't wake up after I close the lid of my MBP. When I open the lid, the screen is black and the latch light is out.

I cannot solve your problem but I did have the same problem which has now evolved into my computer NEVER going to sleep and my bluetooth does not work I have tried all the advice I can find and nothing works. Of course my waranty expired four months ago so now I will have to come up with the money to fix it if I want this resovled. If your warenty is still good I suggest having someone look at it before it evloves into a bigger problem.

Your Powerbook is designed to sleep whenever its display is closed, except when used with an external display, keyboard and mouse connected to it as described in this article. You won't be able to use it the way you describe. Unlike you, it isn't limitless — ;o)

  • Waking up after closing display (lid)

The problem I am having with my waking PB only happens when I close the display. If I use the sleep command in the menu and don't close the display all the way, my PB stays asleep. If I close the lid all the way, it will eventually wake up and stay awake. I then push a little harder on the lid and it will go back to sleep. Only to wake up again, eventually.
Needless to say this is starting to get on my nerves a little.
It sounds like a hardware problem, because it only happens when the display is all the way closed.
Can anyone help my insomniac mac ?
    15 PB G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi idanno67,
This may be a hardware issue with the latch. If you care to troubleshoot this a little on your own you can also try the following. Delete these .plist files: /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist and /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist. Restart your PB and it will generate new plists to replace the ones you deleted.
