[CLOSED] gnome 3 icon themes

Hey all,
Recently installed/upgraded to Arch with gnome 3.  I've checked the wiki here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gnome_3#Icon_theme
and I'm still confused.
Is there a way to install the shiki icon themes from AUR, or any shiki icons into gnome 3?

My knowledge is:
all is compatible, BUT the xdg-user-dirs show the fallback icons (same isue w tango-icons)
if you NOT make you "well know Directories" trow xdg-user-dirs-update, you no have problem (you can use gnome2 icons)
but if you have a ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs w content generated by xdg-user-dirs-update, the "well know directoris" not are showed
faenza, awoken and others WELL complete iconset not have the issue

  • [SOLVED]Gnome icon themes - folder icons

    I think it belongs here.
I made some folder icons for  retrofukation icons theme and tried to apply them as documents, music etc. folder icons, but did not succeed. Then I thought the theme was written wrong, and tried to apply 100% working (in that u-distro) Humanity theme, but with the same effect.
Then I updated the system, but nothing happened.
Then I googled for a while, but found nothing worth reading - maybe because of bad search query...
Anyway, does anyone know how to make 'places' icons work?
//I run a standalone wm and use lxappearance. When I downloaded and tried gnome-control-center, it did not help as well.
    P.S. The icons:

Yes, that works just fine, thank you! xdg-user-dirs was not installed, because I did not install the whole gnome. I installed it and updated the directories (xdg-user-dirs-update) and now the icons look just like I want.
But I have a couple of folders (like ~/Distros or ~/Source) for which I would like to set custom icons too.
So I have ~/.icons/retrofukation/scaled/places/folder-source.png and ~/Source directory. Any chance to set an icon for it?

  • Gnome icon themes not changing the icons

ok, so i go to the gnome website and download an icon theme and let the theme installer do its thing and apply the new theme, but none of the icons change on some themes and a few do on others. do i have to manually change each icon by hand? if there is a built in installer is it something that the icon theme has wrong?

    bump...anyone?

  • Keep customized icon after changing gnome icon themes

Is that possible under current gnome2.6? Thanks in advance.

Oh, thanks, but I think you mean to customize icon themes. I am sorry I don't explain very clearly, I mean when I choose a picture as my folder's looking, say, a post for my movie stored folder- I do like the feature - but if I changed my icon theme in the theme section, the customized looking of my folder is gone, so can I keep it not changed? I can change my desktop icon and keep it no matter how I changed my icon theme, but in nautilus I can't do so. Is there any way to do so? Thanks.

  • Icon theme not loaded correctly

    Hey there,
i don't know how to fix this one, maybe a specialist in icons and icon themes know the answer: Well, im using the PNG version of Snowish icons at the moment. As you can see here http://img155.imageshack.us/my.php?imag … scrmo2.png, the icons are all shown correctly but one. The backward button. It's the ugly default (gnome-icon-theme) one. How can i fix that one, or search for the problem?

Restarting Sonata and also re-login didn't work. Also it did not work to select another icon theme, and then Snowish again. I checked the folder and the file "media-seek-backward.png" is present in all sizes. It just gets not used by Sonata, so my guess it is a problem IN Sonata.
Maybe one of you knows the mysterium answer/solution.

  • Icon theme problem

Hello. I have installed icewm, rox, gnome-icon-theme, and tango-icon-theme. I use rox filer to manage the icon the themes and desktop. The problem is that some icon themes display correctly (eg gtsand) and others don't (eg tamiga). In the case of tamiga, the tango icon theme is being used instead of the tamiga theme. Here's what I've tried:
    1. installed tamiga  icon theme to /usr/share/icons and ~/.icons (not at the same time)
    2. checked to see that rox is using theme (~/.config/rox.soruceforge.net/ROX-Filer/options)
    3. tried adding icon path to ~/.gtkrc-2.0 (I don't think rox uses this)
    4. tried editing the "inherits" line in the index.theme file (Inherits=Tango, gnome, hicolor). when I switched the positions of tango and gnome, the gnome icon theme was used. added Gnome and GNOME.
    5. browsed the forums
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
    john

I know how to change themes using the method you described; however, the icon theme that is displayed is tango. I clearly chose tamiga, and the rox file in ~/.config points to the tamiga icon theme. So my question is why isn't the tamiga theme being used? Does it have something to with the inherits line in the icon cofig file? Is there some other problem? Some icon themes display correctly, but not others.
    Thanks for trying!

  • Openbox - Gnome-icons wont change anymore... Reason: Gnome update?

I recently upgraded all my packages and among them was a new Gnome-build. I decided to actually check how Gnome looks in the new version and installed 'gnome' and 'gnome-extra' from the repositories.
Now after rebooting my computer the icon theme I have specified in ~/.gtkrc.mine does not work anymore (Crashbit, if you wanna know). This is pretty weird, as for instance the default 'Tango' theme doesn't work either - only the, say, functional Gnome icon theme is displayed.
    Anyone with similar issues?
I have no clue about how to fix this...
EDIT: So I just started a gnome-Session and edited the theme via the 'Appearance manager' (heck do I know how it's called....) and chose Crashbit- and see! For some reason the icon theme in my openbox-session changed too... Now this is rather odd, as ~/.gtkrc-2.0 says that ~/.gtkrc.mine is supposed to be imported, and that one states "Tango" as a theme.
I suppose that the information about which icons to use is stored someplace else (damn I am smart!). Any ideas?

Icu was upgraded from 0.50 to 0.51.1 , you probably have packages (could be from AUR) that are build against the old icu version and need to be rebuild.

  • Legacy GNOME icons

    Hi,
is there a way to use old classic GNOME icon theme 2.14? I've downloaded it from GNOME FTP and installed, but since this theme was used the approach to icon display changed (no icons for particular file types, icons grouped into office, text etc).
I've posted the problem long time ago http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56743, but there is more to do.
Even if I try to manually copy the icons from GNOME 2.14 for example to Tango theme, there would be problem, because there is no mapping to some icons that were used  in 2.14.
    How to manage this?

blank icons, theme not working [saying problem with Metacity] gnome-terminal doesn't show the menus etc..
it also says problem with gnome-settings-daemon
I have mouse speed problems and keyboard problems [don't do the repeated [have to press to time BACKSPACE to delete 2 letters instead of just holding for a while..]
i hope that this get fixed soon, because it's irritating
    good luck anyways

  • GTK Icon Theme

I get this error when running switch:
    /home/aquafox/.gtkrc.mine:1: error: unexpected identifier `gtk-icon-theme-name', expected keyword - e.g. `style'
    This error running nitrogen:
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'Gtk::IconThemeError'
    Aborted
    This is my .gtkrc.mine file:
    gtk-icon-theme-name = "Tango"
Am I doing anything wrong? Or is the new gtk broken?

Hehe, whatever works. I suppose. I got that same nitrogen error before and installing gnome-icon-theme is what fixed it for me. Definitely a strange error.

  • Force gnome icons in openbox

    What should happen:
Openbox comes up, generic gnome icon theme is used, and it stays that way.
    What actually happens:
Openbox comes up, generic gnome icon theme is used, then after using certain applications a no-brand-name icon theme is used.
How can I force gnome icons to stay the default?
Edit: I believe it has something to do with a ~/gtkrc-2.0 file, of which I do not have.

  • Simple Icon Theme Question

    Hi everyone,
How do i Install an icon theme (e.g. http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ … ent=128143) to then be used for thunar (in fluxbox)?  Also, how would I uninstall it if I were to want to try a new one?  I currently have gnome-icon-themes installed, would I still need this if I choose another theme?
    Thank you very much!

  • Merging Icon Themes

Does anyone know of an icon theme that is "gnome-icon-theme" with mono panel icons for a light background that works with LXpanel? Like "gnome-icon-theme" + "ubuntu-mono-light".
I have tried inheriting them together but LXpanel does not use the icons ending in "-panel".

  • XFCE icon theme confusion

I have a weird problem with my icons and XFCE. Some time ago my gedit icon in the taskbar had gone missing. After a while, I decided to erase my XFCE config and create a new and the icon was properly shown again. But during the time I configurated XFCE, it was again as a missing icon in the xfce taskbar. In the application menu the icon is shown correctly.
Furthermore, Midori shows at the position of the forward button the icon of rhythmbox's next button, but not always, just sometimes, depending on it's mood [Update: No, not depending on it's mood but if it's a shadowed or active button].
I guess my icon theme is somehow corrupted, but removing and reinstalling did not work (using 'gnome'). I also updated my icon cache without any change. If I change to another icon theme, the problem also remains.
    Any suggestions?
[UPDATE] Yeah, I tried to remove my config again, but this time nothing was fixed by that.

Same issue here. Removing ~/.config doesn't help for me though.
It also effects other icons, for instance urvxt - whereas xfce4-terminal displays it correctly (both are using accessories-terminal)

  • [SOLVED] icon-theme.cache and post install

    Hi all,
after a problem with an app (in this case RawTherapee) that requires uptodate icon-theme.cache files under /usr/share/icons/THEME - I just want to ask for your opinion: Is this a feature that should be provided by the icon-theme package post install?
    For example, xfce4-icon-theme has
    post_install() {
    gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/Rodent
    in it's xfce4-icon-theme.install,
    while gnome-icon-theme and hicolor-icon-theme don't and require issueing gtk-update-icon-cache manually after installation/update.
So what do you think, does this call for a feature request?
Edit: Seems like I got the concept wrong and that a solution is not that simple / on the segfaulting programs side... see http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/14237. Thx Jan for explaining.

Apparently gtk-update-icon-cache didn't accept that i had a .icon-theme.cache in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/. After removing it gtk-update-icon-cache apparently created a new file "icon-theme.cache" and doesn't complain anymore. The thing that is wierd about this is that on my other comp i have the .icon-theme.cache and it doesn't complain when upgrading.. Marking this solved anyway

  • Little question about a Claws-Mail tray icon theme, and how to use it.

There is a Claws Mail tray icon theme available on gnome-look.org:
    http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ … tent=71540
These are the instructions the author gives to install the theme:
    Claws Mail Tango trayicon theme
    Claws-Mail version = 3.3.0
copy icons claws-mail-3.3-0/src/pixmaps, recompile and install.
So what am I supposed to do (especially since the newest Claws Mail version is 3.4.0...)?

I would recommend using ABS. just makepkg -o first so the sources get DL'd and unpacked. copy your icons and makepkg -e so the sources are not extracted again and therefore your new icons overwitten.
    finally, enjoy some awesomeness:
