Closed Lid Operations Wont Work

I am a big fan of the closed lid with external mouse, keyboard, and display (minimize spill risks in college dorm room). I just got a new macbook pro after 4 great years with my g4 powerbook and I cannot get the new machine to work with the lid closed. I have tried working with both displays then closing it, but it won't wake up. I tried putting it to sleep and attaching the external display but it doesn't wake up. The for either if I try to open the machine to use it normally the built in display, keyboard, and trackpad are non-responsive and so are all my external items. Has anyone else had this problem or any ideas on what could be going on.

Jonathan , I am experiencing the same exact problems with my Macbook Pro 15 inch. I first started noticing about a month ago that the computer was getting unusually HOT to the touch , and after one day I set the lid down, when I tried to open it back up, it remained on , but no screen, and unresponsive. I have had to restart it everytime since then. It also now takes a lot longer than usual to reboot. I hope the people at Apple resolve this soon, because this is WAY too expensive to be having these problems on a new machine Ive only had for 5 months.

  • Closed lid operations?

I don't have a dock, but I do have an exterior display, a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Is there a way to keep working with the lid closed? or do I have to keep it cracked so it doesn't sleep?

Unless Apple has substantially changed the physical architecture of the Pro line, there is absolutely NO communication between the keyboard tray and the rest of the machine, except for a tiny slot to pass the ribbon cable thru, for the simple reason of keeping the portable safe against accidental spills. Hence air cannot be "drawn thru the keyboard". There will be a cooling effect of the air flowing on top, especially over the palmrests, but most of the cooling is done by the air flowing under the computer, or entering the slot behind the lid hinge and exiting the side slots due to the fans. Thus the advantage of using any of the accessories that lift the portable off the desk for better airflow.
Correct me if things have changed recently, but didn't the Pro's keep awake automatically as soon as you plugged in a keyboard, mouse and external display, even if you closed the lid? ("Plugging in" can be physical, or virtual via Bluetooth, btw)

  • Solved. Closed lid mode only works with power connected

I was banging my head a bit trying to figure out why my MacBook Pro was no longer working with the lid closed when attached to my external monitors. Anyway I figure out that for this to work properly the power must be connected. I am guessing it has to do with the power profile used.
I hope this finds anyone dealing with the same issue.

After setup, I pulled the power and laptop and connected the main port to the LAN.
I assume by this you mean that you connected the WAN port on the AEBSn directly to your LAN using an Ethernet cable ... correct? If so, how is your LAN getting Internet access? That is do you have another router, switch, or modem in the LAN?

  • Closed Lid operation

    Hi,
I was wondering, while having my macbook hooked up to an external monitor, is there anyway to prevent the computer from shutting down when the lid is closed?
in windows there is the option "do nothing when lid is closed" is there such a thing in mac?
    Thanks

    Using external KB + Mouse:
Connect External KB + Mouse (& External Screen) > Close Macbook > Allow it to sleep properly (i.e. for a couple seconds) > Click with external Mouse/KB > Dah Dah! Your external screen will awaken.

  • Closed lid mode not working

    Hello all.
I have a 17" Macbook Pro core2duo and I recentley bought the Apple DVI to video adaptor
    see http://store.apple.com/133-622/WebObjects/australiastore?productLearnMore=M9267G /A
However when i plug in a USB mouse, keyboard, and the cable and connected to the TV and close the lid, the display just dies.
Any help would be appreciated. And the keyboard I am using is a wireless one, but it is through USB, and the mouse is still wired USB.
Also is it possible to just use my existing Bluetooth Mighty Mouse instead of they keyboard and other mouse, as all i want do is use Front Row when i connect the MacBook to a TV.
    Cheers

I think you're doing things in the wrong order ...
To operate your portable computer with an external monitor attached and the display closed:
    1. Connect a USB keyboard and mouse to your portable.
    2. Connect the power adapter to the portable and a power outlet.
    3. Close the portable display to put the computer to sleep.
    4. Connect your portable to an external display.
    5. Wait a few seconds and then press any key on the external keyboard to wake the portable.

  • MacBook Closed-Lid Operation Problems

I currently have the new 24-inch Apple Cinema Dispaly connected to my MacBook. Whenever I have the lid closed for more than 15-20 minutes or so, the MacBook begins to get very hot and applications begin to run slow. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, any suggestions?

Not seen this myself but does it only happen with the lid closed? Is there anything you do (eg a particular application) only when the machine is closed? You could try Activity Monitor and look for a runaway process (ie sustained high CPU usage). I think this would explain the machine getting hot, and then the slowdown as the CPUs throttle-back to reduce heat output. It does not explain why this only happens lid closed though.

  • Front LED stays on when in closed lid operation

Is the front led supposed to stay on? my previous powerbook didn't do this, but this may be a new intel feature, maybe?

I have the same question. Also, when I unplug an external Monitor when my macbook is closed, I notice the backlight keys look like they were on the whole time. That doesn't seem good, although I suppose it won't really hurt anything.

my camera app wont work on my ipad2. i open the app ant the shutter stays closed. i am on ios 5 if that matters. help?
    thx

First, double tap the home key and close off any apps that are in the task bar.  You are really looking for an earlier instance of camera or photobooth that is still there.  Then reboot the pad.  Hold the sleep and home buttons until the apple logo appears.  Ignore the red slider.
    Then try the app again.
This has been happening off and on well before ios 5.

  • Allowing Mac to continue working with closed lid?

Is there any way to allow Mac to continue working and doing whatever it's been doing with a closed lid? I tried Caffeine and NoSleep but no luck and whenever I close the lid, it goes to power saving mode, disconnects me from WiFi and stops the HDMI output. As a consequence, whenever I want to download a bigger file or watch something on my TV via HDMI, the laptop has to remain ever so slightly open. Any way to fix it, be it through 3rd party apps or some terminal mumbo-jumbo?

  • 15-r007TU-Display does not turn on when it automatically turns off after closing lid.

I just purchased hp 15-r007TU, Windows 8.1 x84. I'm facing a strange problem. After all initial setup, I put the laptop on to download and install all lates Windows 8.1 patches. The display is set to tuen off automaticaaly after 5 minutes. After 5 min it did turn off as set. But then I can not turn it back on. I pressed all (except power) keys, used touch pad, closed lid and opened but it stayed off. Laptop was on and running as I could see HDD lights flickering, I could hear system sounds on pressign mute/volume keys, also I could toggle WiFi with key. I then pressed power off key to turn Windows off normally. I did turn off. I again turned it on, I could see 'hp' logo with spinning wheel and then nothing. Display is off and I don't see start screen. I have to hard reset (press power button for more than 5 seconds) then display is normal. This happens every time the display turns itself off automatically after set time or I close the lid. Only after hard reset it works normally and I see the start menu.
The power settings I use are:
    1. never put system to standby after preset time. (either on battery or AC power)
    2. turn display off after 5 min. (both on battery or AC power)
    3. when I close lid - do nothing. (both on battery or AC power)
    4. when I press power button - shut down
I am using Windows 8.1 x64 with all latest patches installed. BIOS updated to lates available. All latest drivers installed.
I have not yet set password to the system to log in.
Help would be immensly appreciate. The device is still in warrenty if it needs to be replaced.

    Hello K1200LT,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand the computer will not sleep when you shut down the lid. You seem to have already done most of the troubleshooting I would've suggested.
To be honest,  it is either a hardware or software-related issue. To determine this, I would like you to reinstall the operating system. It will clear up any software conflicts and allow you to start fresh.
First, please ensure you backup your files. Here is information on how to do this: Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8)
Once this is done, it is safe to reinstall the operating system. Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8)
If the same situation occurs, the computer likely has faulty hardware. At that point, please contact HP phone support. You can utilize this website to learn how to contact HP appropriately, based on your region: Contact HP Worldwide
Please let me know what happens. Thanks!

  • IPad 3 safari wont work

I just received my iPad today. Everything is good but only that my safari wont work... When I opened the safari app, it will show up the web but only the bar on the top and the rest are white. Also, the touch screen seen no functioning when that happen, because I tried to see if sth happen when tap the bar icon or sth, but nothing happen, it just stop there. I also noticed that the mutil-tasking wont work either at that moment. Of course I did back-up and reboot...etc, but nothing helps... Please help me with this problem! Thanks for any answer/discussion
*I didnt jail break my iPad, and everything on my iPad are all from iTunes and App store. Operating system is on 5.1. My iPad can connect to the wifi because I know I can use wifi in other apps, only Opera mini, something it works, something it won't.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data (Clear Cache on iOS 4) and also Clear History
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot

  • DVI to VGA Adapter Closed Lid Mode Distorted Picture on TV

    Hi
I managed to hook up the DVI to VGA adapter and view on my Sanyo TV. Nothing fancy just a older TV.
I am feeding through the Yellow Video output into the video input on the TV. (Also tried s-video)
Viewing with the macbook lid open no problems. Remembered that I could close the lid.
Followed the instructions online about connecting, closing the lid and waking up using my bluetooth mouse.
First time things went well - able to use Front Row and View Slideshows etc. also steaming video from Safari, (TV Land for my kid)
Then the screen began to flash - and change to black with rolling images.
Like you used to have in the 60-70's black and white TV - multiple images rolling past over and over.
I tried rebooting - starting new connections, using different cables, using both VGA and S-Video directly into the TV and not through my reciever.
    Any ideas!
I can't use closed lid mode at all. I must instead, dim my screen.
    Help?
    Thanks
    Buddy

Thanks, BSteely, I have the latest QT and iTunes already. Closing the lid seems to kick the MacBook external display into some special mode that Front Row can't display videos in. For example, you get the Front Row interface, but as you select movies/TV shows, the preview window on the left side is blank. Open the cover, and have both displays going, and you can see the previews fine (and of course, you can see the movies/TV shows play fine as well when you click on them)
Running Quicktime Player full screen works fine without Front Row in either open or closed lid mode. So it is apparently something wrong with Front Row itself.

  • TV + Closed-Lid Mode?

Is running in closed-lid mode on the MacBook using a television with the Apple Video Adapter supported? I can't get it to work properly.
    Brian

Make sure your power saving settings aren't unusual - I find normal works fine. Configure your external displays with the lid open and then with the power cable connected try closing the lid. It will fall asleep immediately - let it. Then when the light throbs try waking it back up again with the remote... It works for me, but it did try my patience before I came up with a routine that I was happy with.
Also - how do you connect your TV? My TV has a monitor / DVI out and it's quite happy with that. I shouldn't think that S-Video should be too different. Has anyone tried with S-Video? Hope this helps...
