Closed Network Reduces Signal Strength ?

On my AEBS I am using WPA2 Personal and had closed my network. I noticed that closing the network reduced my signal strength by 20 per cent. Why is there such a significant reduction ?
Since a closed network is still broadcasting and therefore is detectable, is there any point at all in closing your network ?

...is there any point at all in closing your network ?
No, absolutely no benefit at all.

  • Reduced signal strength

    Hello,
I noticed with my time capsule 2TB that in certain spots in my apartment the signal strength dropped significantly. On my IPhone it went in average down by 2 rings, my iMAC in two rooms away is even loosing sometimes the connection. Does somebody now about this, in case not I think maybe there is an interference, is there a workaround by which I don’t lose speed?
    Thanks
    Philipp

Two walls will absorb, on average, 40-50% of the wireless signal strength.
If you think the problems are elsewhere, then you are likely picking up wireless interference from another new WiFi network near you, cordless phones, other electronic devices, etc.
See this Apple support document for more details and suggestions:

  • Reducing signal strength/distance?

I didn't see anything in the manual PDF about reducing the strength of the broadcast signal, in order to minimize the potential number of unintentional recipients. Possible?

    open airport utility...
    select your base station...
    click on the "wireless" tab...
    click the "wireless options" button...
reduce the "transmit power" percentage as desired...
    click "ok"...
    click "update"...

  • No Networks or Signal Strength Available...

yet I am connected to my network. This is annoying me. I am on a MacBook Pro with Airport Extreme.
How can I fix this? It is really annoying me.

I assume you are connected to the internet by ethernet, You are using the WAN port , yes. If your internet device is a DHCP server is your connection set to DHCP and not manual and are you in bridging mode. Have you rest your modem/router.

IPHONE 5:  can't receive calls and random error messages, such as "could not activate cellular data network" and "no connection - network unavailable, please connect to wifi or cellular network."  This occurs even when signal strength or wifi is operational, and it does not matter whether wifi is on or off.  ATT went through the standard protocol - resetting network, resetting sim card, etc.  No changes.  Other phones working fine in same region with same carrier.  Apple's solution is to restore software, but haven't gone there yet.  Anyone successfully addressed this/these issues?

I should point out that it worked when the iPhone was set back to factory settings, but when restored with the backup, data/internet no longer works again, and I get the "Could not activate cellular data network" error message yet again.

  • TS3623 I cannot activate my 3rd gn AppleTV due to NetworkTime problems, what is that? I am able to mirror fine. And my network read shows that I am accessing my network, with good signal strength, but the net work time has stopped me cold.

I am able to mirror fine, but that limits me, my wifi extend only to airplay, my ipad, my iphone, but not the store, or netflix Network stats are good, and signal strength excellent, but due to the problem of failing to  set my Network time no activation. I have unplugged and replugged so many times my i need to see a chiropractor. What gives, I have seen this question on the forums but no diffinative answer. HELP!! —Bob

Try a reset or restore if you can get to that.  I found when trying to use a wired ethernet setup (which wouldn't work but that is another story) that I couldn't even get to the menus without the atv3 wanting to connect with apple for the time.  When I went back to wireless, I got the tome sync to let me get to the menus but then an apple rep had me restore or reboot (I forgot which sorry) and then I finally got my wired connection to work.  That is, until tonight and I am having to download the 4 hour update.  Download to what, I don't know.

  • HT5858 Where can I find a signal strength capability to check my WiFi network?

  • Can I configure a wireless home network with two cable routers (both with separate connections to the same cable company)?  Issue is poor signal strength even with multiple Airport Expresses added to the network.

I have a wireless home network consisting of a time capsule, two airport expresses and a cable modem.  Even with this configuration I get a very weak signal in much of be condo - the walls, etc. are solid concrete. I want to see if I can add another separately connected cable modem and connect one of the existing airport express to it by Ethernet cable.  If so, this would give me two wired hubs and greatly improve signal strength. I do not know if this configuration will in fact work or if I will just wind up with two, separate and unrelateable networks.  Unfortunately, there is no way to run any additional Ethernet cable and I doubt simply adding more Airport Express will help. Thanks.

Try Ethernet over Power adapters.. these are very popular for your kind of environment.. being able to make non-wireless link to another area where you can setup a wireless access point.
Airport Express are not great for wireless power.. if you really have issues with wireless strength in a bad environment apple stuff is not the way to go.
    The comparison chart here.
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/58-2_4-ghz-dn?see=P_F
This is their worst test location you can also see averages.. the latest airport extreme.. is there a long way down.. and that is a much better wireless device than Airport Express.
The Ubiquiti power AP is small cheap and designed for precisely this duty.. useless in an apple wireless network.. you will need to run ethernet or EOP adapters back to the main router.. but if the normal omni directional antennas don't provide enough signal you can get directional ones.. I suspect you can cover your whole apartment with a pair of these and high gain directional antenna.

  • Won't connect to wireless network but indicates full signal strength

I just bought a new macbook pro last week and connected to my home's wireless internet immediately with no problems. Until this morning it was working fine. When i opened my computer and it woke from sleep it would no longer provide me with internet access. Both skype and safari won't work but my icon indicates that i have full signal strength and that i am in fact connected to my home network. I ran a diagnostic test and the result was that it "appeared to be connected" yet i still am not able to access the internet. When i plug an ethernet cable into my mac the internet works and all the other computers in the house (all non-macs) have wireless internet access.
    Thanks for any help!

When i opened my computer and *it woke from sleep* it would no longer provide me with internet access.
Sometimes a restart will correct network problems since you are getting the full bars and the diagnostic test confirms +"appeared to be connected".+

Since your computer is new, check Software Update & make sure you have all the latest "network" updates for your model computer.

  • Have just arrived in New Zealand, and have connected to local wi fi network with go signal strength, but phone keeps saying no service?  Any idea what to do?

Have just arrived in New Zealand, have connected through local wi fi network, have good signal strength, but phone says no service, cant send texts out! any ideas?

Text messages are sent via the cellular network, not wi-fi. Only iMessages are sent via wi-fi. Unless you have roaming turned on for the phone, or you have an unlocked phone that you installed a local SIM, you would continue to see No Service. That reflects your cellular carrier service. Connecting to wi-fi has no bearing on your cellular service, which is what displays on the status bar of the phone near the signal bars (circles/dots).

  • Is there a way to designate the order that an iPhone connects to a wifi signal.  Either by signal strength or preferring one network over another without forgetting one of them?

Is there a way to designate the order that an iPhone connects to a wifi signal.  Either by signal strength or preferring one network over another without forgetting one of them?

Normally the phone will choose the strongest signal.

  • Will signal strength or internet speed suffer when using a Generation 1 Time Capsule and wireless extending a network with a Generation 5 Airport Extreme

I have a wireless network in my home and I have a Time Capsule 1st generation and a Airport Extreme 5th Generation, will this cause my internet to be slow or have glitches with signal strength?

We've gone over this in the other thread.
If the Time Capsule will be connecting using wireless only, everything depends on the quality of the connection between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.
The quality of the connection will be affected by the distance that the Time Capsule is located from the AirPort Extreme and any obstructions in the signal path.
If you have a ceiling between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule, then you should expect the signal arriving at the Time Capsule to have lost 30-40% of its bandwidth (speed). So, the Time Capsule can only repeat the weaker signal that it receives.
Other walls or other obstructions like heavy furniture, large mirrors, etc will also affect the wireless signal as well as cordless phones and other wireless networks around you.
If you are lucky enough to have line-of-sight between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule, then the wireless connection between those devices can work quite well. Few of us have this luxury, and must settle for significant compromises in performance.
If the wireless connection between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule does the job for you reliably, then you can leave things as is.  If you are not getting the reliable performance that you need, then you will need to establish a wired Ethernet connection between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.
As you might imagine, there is virtually no signal loss in a wire, even up to 300+ feet or 100 meters.

  • Signal Strength Problems - 1310

I've got a site with six 1310's installed. Prior to Hurricane Katrina we've had no problems with the setup.
Since the hurricane, we've replaced all but two of the units (those two didn't get flooded). On the units that were replaced, we also replaced the antenna's (12dBi omni's) and the cable's (100' ULL).
We are getting really poor signal strength, -85 to -90 dBm. The maximum distance between root and non-root's is about 425 feet with clear line of sight. I don't have a good calculation of Fresnel zone, but since it is 28ft at 2.8 miles, I think I'm clear on this also.
I've two non-roots that are about 200 feet away from root, on start-up they have a signal strength of about -50 dBm, but over 10-15 minutes, they degrade to -85 dBm.
The Cisco engineer I was working with was thrown in the towel, saying he doesn't know anything about antenna's.
I did a site survey and didn't come up with any interference.
    Anyone have any clues?
    Thanks,
    Westley

Thanks for the pictures, it helps a lot to see how things are layed out.
The move to replace 200' of low loss to 100 feet of Ultra low loss was probably a Very Good Thing and should have increased the signal strength considerably.
Grounding is very important, if only for the safety aspects. "Lightning Arrestors" don't stop lightning; they bleed off static electricity and (tend to) reduce the space charge that can accumulate on exposed elements.
It's always a good idea to put in a segment of fiber between the APs and the wired network to prevent the zap from killing the rest of the network (and maybe the phones too ....).
Check the coax for kinks (or places that were kinked), sharp bends, broken jacket, etc. At Gig+ frequencies, any malformed section of cabling an have a significant impact on the propagation of the signal.
Check each connector to make sure there isn't any "stuff" that is causing a casual short between the center conductor and the shield. Look closely, wire fragments from the braid can be pretty hard to see.
Also make sure that the center pin is ~level with the surrounding sleeve. Sometime the center pin is driven back into the connector (i.e., bad termination) and is not making sufficient contact.
The "starts strong and tapers off" symptom can only be something related to power, a failing component, heat (causing a component to break down), or some safety mechanism (i.e., high SWR causing the transmitter to throttle back)....
Try another known good power brick,
    Try another antenna (any antenna)
and see if the symptoms change.
Probably the most suspicious places would be the connections around the arrestor, and the connection from the coax to the antenna pigtail.
I looked at the pattern of your new antennas:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps469/prod_installation_guide09186a0080148acf.html
The "E-Plane" drawings are the "side view," the "H-Plane" is the "top view". Imagine the line from the center of the chart to the "90" (bottom) is your mast.
Anyway, the short version is: Check the cable and connections carefully (especially connections and the arrestors).
Second to that, make sure the power supply is stable.
It's not likely to be an IOS issue (but I'm a big fan of staying as current as possible).
Check it out and let us know if you find anything ...
    Good Luck
    Scott
