Closing all applications with one keystroke

Hi
There must be a trick but it has been 3 weeks I had my Imac and still have not found it
How can I CLOSE ALL running application with one keystroke ? also how can I close the finder ... its always running and I am not sure it should.
Up to know I love the Imac and wander how I survived on a pc for 20 years.
Antoine

The Finder is necessary to allow you to navigate your computer: it always runs and if you force-quit it it will immediately relaunch.
Even if you shut down your computer normally any application with unsaved work will ask for a confirmation. You should not force a shutdown: you can damage your disk Directory by doing this and doing it repeatedly could run you into serious problems. You should only do this in the rare even that the computer locks up completely.
It's possible to write an AppleScript which will quit all applications (though you will still be asked for confimation where applicable) but it gets a bit complicated because there are running processes which you don't want to quit, and as you're new to all this I'm reluctant to recommend this as a way to go. Otherwise there is no global method.

    Hi.  I have a similar issue to the one posted below in that I want to run a logic script for one application (call it Application A) from a DM package in a different application (Application B).  This is to stop the user from having to switch between applications to run the logic.
    I have tried the following:
    1. I have tried putting the script logic from App A into App B, but the dimensionality is different so it fails to validate.
    2. I have tried "hard coding" the application name within the process chain, but it fails with an error "u201CAn exception with the type CX_SY_TABLE_KEY_SPECIFICATION occurred ...." similar to the post below.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • My Dock doesn't show all applications with shortcut

    My Dock doesn't show all applications with shortcut
    Apple tab only shows some applications on my list not all, anyone know why? I went under system settings to fix it and there is no option for it.
    Thanks!

    Perhaps I don't understand your question, but if you think that the doc shows every application you have on the computer, this is incorrect. If you want certain applications to be shown on the dock you have to add them to the dock. The dock comes preset with a few select Applications Apple wants to feature but you are free to add others or remove ones you don't use.

    If the emails have been previously deleted (I.e. in the trash folder), tap Edit at the top of the list. You should see a delete all button at the bottom. If the messages are in a standard folder, they need to be handled one at a time.

    Thanks Kurt!  I had tried all that and had tried closing both programmes from the application monitor, but SyncServices Agent refused to close.  I tried closing Launchd which is their mother application, but that just caused the screen go go blank.  In the end the two programmes let themselves be closed next time I tried the installation process so all was well.  Thanks for your help!

    It's very likely that your boot drive is failing. Back up all data immediately and schedule a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • IPad 3 with iOS 7: Any way to close/exit all apps with one action?

    While there are some things that I like about iOS 7, there is one long term gripe that I have that's been made worse by iOS 7.  I have an iPad 3, and usually close (exit) all the apps that I've used that day at the end of the day, then put the iPad on the charger for the night.  I'm really tired of having to fling all the apps off the screen to close them...being able to do this with 2 or 3 apps at a time is really not helpful, either *smile*.
    Is there any way that I can just close all the open apps with one gesture or action?  This would be so nice, flinging apps off the screen is not an improvement for me over the previous method of tapping on X's, what would be an improvement would be to not have to do that to close all the open apps.  Flinging isn't bad for one or two apps, but for 10 or 15, no, I can't say that it isn't really boring and annoying.  Even Android has an option to "close all", good grief.
    Thanks for any help with this.

    Most apps close automatically when you press the home button and move to the next app. Apps only need swipe closing if they are misbehaving or you purposefully left them open. The most notable exception being the music apps which because of their ability to play in the background always closing. In short if you're worried about saving time by swiping apps there's no need to swipe any.

  • ?? Several applications with one JVM ??

    Hi,
    I need to run several swing application with a single JVM. (for performance reasons, especially with memory). This is ok.
    But swing applications uses only one AWT-Event-Thread that is shared by all applications (Frames).
    The consequence is, per example, that a modal dialog in one of the applications will block all other running applications.
    Actually, this problem is bug-id = 4080029.
    But there's no workaround.
    Is there anyone who knows how to deal with this ??
    I read an article about AppContext where I understand that it should be possible to assign a different context to each application, and also a different EventQueue to each application.
    But I cannot find any documentation about AppContext, and can't understand how to use it.
    Is there someone who can help with AppContext ??
    -Herbien (Switzerland)

    I've found the following in the src directory of JDK1.3.1 -- it's supposed to be part of javax.swing but I can't find it documented anywhere, so here goes (don't forget the Dukes if this helps):
    V.V.
    * @(#)AppContext.java     1.7 00/02/02
    * Copyright 1998-2000 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
    * This software is the proprietary information of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
    * Use is subject to license terms.
    package javax.swing;
    import java.util.Hashtable;
    import java.util.Enumeration;
    * The AppContext is a per-SecurityContext table which stores application
    * service instances.  (If you are not writing an application service, or
    * don't know what one is, please do not use this class.)  The AppContext
    * allows applet access to what would otherwise be potentially dangerous
    * services, such as the ability to peek at EventQueues or change the
    * look-and-feel of a Swing application.<p>
    * Most application services use a singleton object to provide their
    * services, either as a default (such as getSystemEventQueue or
    * getDefaultToolkit) or as static methods with class data (System).
    * The AppContext works with the former method by extending the concept
    * of "default" to be SecurityContext-specific.  Application services
    * lookup their singleton in the AppContext; if it hasn't been created,
    * the service creates the singleton and stores it in the AppContext.<p>
    * For example, here we have a Foo service, with its pre-AppContext
    * code:<p>
    * <code><pre>
    *    public class Foo {
    *        private static Foo defaultFoo = new Foo();
    *        public static Foo getDefaultFoo() {
    *            return defaultFoo;
    *    ... Foo service methods
    *    }</pre></code><p>
    * The problem with the above is that the Foo service is global in scope,
    * so that applets and other untrusted code can execute methods on the
    * single, shared Foo instance.  The Foo service therefore either needs
    * to block its use by untrusted code using a SecurityManager test, or
    * restrict its capabilities so that it doesn't matter if untrusted code
    * executes it.<p>
    * Here's the Foo class written to use the AppContext:<p>
    * <code><pre>
    *    public class Foo {
    *        public static Foo getDefaultFoo() {
    *            Foo foo = (Foo)AppContext.getAppContext().get(Foo.class);
    *            if (foo == null) {
    *                foo = new Foo();
    *                getAppContext().put(Foo.class, foo);
    *            return foo;
    *    ... Foo service methods
    *    }</pre></code><p>
    * Since a separate AppContext exists for each SecurityContext, trusted
    * and untrusted code have access to different Foo instances.  This allows
    * untrusted code access to "system-wide" services -- the service remains
    * within the security "sandbox".  For example, say a malicious applet
    * wants to peek all of the key events on the EventQueue to listen for
    * passwords; if separate EventQueues are used for each SecurityContext
    * using AppContexts, the only key events that applet will be able to
    * listen to are its own.  A more reasonable applet request would be to
    * change the Swing default look-and-feel; with that default stored in
    * an AppContext, the applet's look-and-feel will change without
    * disrupting other applets or potentially the browser itself.<p>
    * Because the AppContext is a facility for safely extending application
    * service support to applets, none of its methods may be blocked by a
    * a SecurityManager check in a valid Java implementation.  Applets may
    * therefore safely invoke any of its methods without worry of being
    * blocked.

  • Update all podcasts with one click

    How do I update all podcasts with the new iTunes?

    That's 3 clicks.  Alternatively you can left click on list then click the refresh button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, but that is also not one click.  It seems the goal of the geniuses behind iTunes 11's interface was to make every action go from 1 mouse click to 2, thus making the software slower and more cumbersome to use.
    Is it really too much to ask to have a global refresh button in the podcast view in addition to the list view?  Apparently so.  Oh, and why did they disable the sidebar by default?  Without it, you'll never guess what happens.  Oh you did?  Yup it takes 2 clicks to switch from music to podcasts instead of one.

  • Closing all applications

    Hi,
    Please how do i close all Applications and return to the main screen? Thanks.

    You can minimize them by clicking the yellow button in the top left corner. You can quit them easily by pressing Command and Q at the same time. Pressing Command-Option-Escape at the same time brings up the "Force Quit Applications" window, where you can forcefully close stubborn Applications. This window also shows you all of the current Applications you have open.
    Did we answer your question?

  • How do you move a file to the trash with ONE keystroke (Can't believe I'm wasting time on this!)

    Everytime I want to send a file to the trash, I have to either perform some kind of key combination/shortcut or use the trackpad/mouse, right click and select "move to trash", or drag the file(s) to the trash!  This is absolutely ridiculous.  Why can't I just press the delete button??? I cannot take it anymore!  It's such a waste of time.
    After some research, I finally found a post with the answer I was looking for from user  par larsson
    Re: How delete a file in mac os x?
    "You can also go into System Preferences and make a new keyboard shortcut. I turned one of the function keys into a "Move To Trash" key.
    1. No need to use the mouse for something that should be simple and quick.
    2. Single button press just like in Windows."
    Seriously!
    Now the problem is how do you do this?
    1. I went to the system prefs > Keyboard > Keyboard and checked "use F1, F2, etc... as standard function keys.."
    2. Under keyboard shortcuts, I selected "Application Shortcuts" and clicked on the "+" sign
    3. I selected the finder application, entered "Move To Trash" in the action box, and F12 as the key (because it's next to "delete")
    That did not work.  It just opened the dashboard instead.
    4.  I went back to "keyboard shortcuts" and found F12 was already assigned to open the dashboard.  So I unchecked it and tried again.
    That still didn't work.  I would select the file to be moved to trash, press F12, and after an error "beep" sound, the last file in the folder was highlighted.

    Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!!!!!!!!!!!!  YOU DID IT!  I cannot believe it!
    I changed "Move To Trash" to "Move to Trash" and selected a file.  I had lost all hope, so I took a minute to prepare myself for yet another moment of deep frustration.  Then I pressed F10, and bang! the file was trashed!!!  It took me a couple minutes to actually believe what just happened.  Thank you so much!  If I could, I would "like" you as many times as I can physically hit the "Liked" button!
    PS: what the heck is wrong with Apple though???  Wrong instructions, incorrect help instructions on their own site.  The chances of figuring this out before having a nervous breakdown were like one in a million (approximately, I did not actually do the math).  Last week, the keyboard and the trackpad stopped responding on my brand new macbook pro for a couple hours. I was not the only one with this problem.  Apparently, this was from a design flaw, which means it could happen again at any time.  iMovie doesn't work.  TextEdit keeps crashing all the time.  Emptying the trash can take hours.
    Since 2000, I bought a PMac G4 Quicksilver, a used PMac G3 Blue, a used iBook G4, a used Pismo PBook G3, a used Graphite iMac G4, a used iMac G3 (green, 233MHz I think) and I already had more problems with this brand new macbook pro than will all the other macs combined...  For such an expensive machine, with 16GB of RAM, that's a little dissapointing, especially from Apple.  Maybe I'm just not lucky.
    Anyways, thanks again!  Best moment of 2014!

  • Why can't I close an application with ONE click???

    If I click the little red button with the 'X', why does the action not close the entire application, and why does the application remain active in the dock???????
    Isn't there some way (some setting maybe) that I can get a SINGLE click to close an application?

    First of all, you close a window, you quit an application. Closing a window and quitting an application are two different operations.
    But, if you press command-Q, you will quit the current application and close the windows associated with that application as a result.
    The Mac operates in this way to increase speed, minimize RAM usage, and use screen space more efficiently. Re-opening applications takes time, keeping a window open to keep an application going would take more memory, and in Windows, that window would get a button on the taskbar, which would rob screen space from other task buttons.
    The Mac is an exercise in speed and efficiency. It is the way it is for a reason. Just because you close an application window doesn't mean you're not going to use that application again in a few seconds. This functionality is more flexible and more oriented towards system performance.

  • Download All Photos With One Click

    Is there a way in iWeb to download all the photos on a photo page in 1 click?
    Similar to the way you can download an entire Gallery on MobileMe.

    No. That would be a hyperlink you'd have to add to the top of the photo page for visitor to click on if they wanted to download all of the photos at one time. It would be in addition to the adding the photos to the photo page in iWeb.
    There are two ways you can create that link. The first is:
    1 - create the zipped folder on your hard drive.
    2 - go to the Inspector/Hyperlink/LInk and and select A File in the Link to menu. Navigate to the zipped folder and select it. The zipped folder will be uploaded to the server when you publish the page.
    Click to view full size
    When a visitor clicks on that link the zipped folder will immediately be downloaded.
    The second method makes for easier and quicker iWeb editing and publishing:
    1 - create the zipped folder and manually upload to the server.
    2 - create a hyperlink with the link to an external page option. Put in the URL for the zipped folder on your server.
    This method only requires you to upload the zipped folder one time an does not require iWeb to manage it except for the link on the page. IMO this is the better method.
