Closing Applications?
I just got the Iphone yesterday and it is my first Apple product with an operating system on it...do I have to close the applications (mail, safari, etc)or do they close by themselves? Maybe when I power it off perhaps?
When using the Home button to return to the Home screen, you are in effect closing the previous application you were using.
If you have email accounts set to automatically check for new messages, this will occur regardless when at the Home screen. There is no quitting of specific applications with the iPhone.

i see that if i want to closing application i must do that
To close an app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with the app that you want to close 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
my question is there an easy way instead of that method to closing application i think that my cause soon the home key crash cause of many press on it when closing every application hope you give me a solutionYou really do not need to close previously used apps completely. When you leave an app and go to the Home screen or another app, the previous app quits running.
There are a few exceptions to this like in Mail where the app will finish a task like sending or receiving email.
But most apps just stop working and have there state saved. Then when you go to that app again you go back to where it was and it starts running again.
The only time I close or quit an app by double clicking the Home button is when an app freezes or misbehaves. -
How do I remove an "orphaned" window from a closed application?
Hi,
Every now and then, I end up with an "orphaned" window on my desktop, left over from a closed application. Currently, I have a login window from the Screen Sharing application that's been spinning the spoked progress wheel next to "Connecting..." for an hour or so. I've already closed the Screen Sharing app, so it's not a straightforward thing to go into Activity Monitor and kill the process. I know that I can reboot the machine to fix this, but I'm wondering if someone might know how to fix this sort of thing without a reboot. Is there some app that I can use that can tell me what process is the "owner" of this window? Since the progress wheel is spinning and I can drag the window around, it would seem that some process has control of it, but I just don't know which one.
Thanks,
KenHi Carolyn,
Thanks for the information, but maybe I didn't clearly explain what happened. I had the Screen Sharing app open, and then I properly closed it down by quitting the application. But one of its windows remained on the desktop. I went into Activity monitor, and the Screen Sharing app wasn't listed in the process list at all. So I'm guessing that this window isn't owned by the Screen Sharing app itself, but from some other process that was spawned by the Screen Sharing app that didn't close when I shut down the Screen Sharing app. Granted, this situation doesn't come up very often, but I've also seen it happen with Norton Antivirus, if I dismount a volume while there's a popup window doing a "scan on mount", with the result that the "scan on mount" window doesn't go away. So given that the process with the "friendly" app name no longer appears in Activity monitor, can you suggest any way to determine which of the running processes "owns" the still-present window?
Thanks,
Ken -
Hello everyone,
I have a question about closing application. I have a console application that a user can always close by typing Ctrl+c or closing the command prompt.
I would like to catch this action in order the application to execute some small code just before closing. Is it possible ? How can I do this ?
I hope that someone can help me,
Regards,
David MayorOk good but where do I have to put it ? in the main method ? outside the main method ? If I put it outside, it does not compile, and if I put it inside, I have an error on compilation telling that:

Can you help me ? Thank you a lot.

Closing Applications with red X prevents restarting of applications
Hi,
first of all, I switched from PC to Mac just 2 days ago, so forgive my lack of common iKnownledge of macLingo.
My system is OS X 10.5.6 running on the latest MacBook (standard model).
I performed the software update.
As former windows user (and every other OS user, btw.) I assumed that clicking on the red X button closes the application, which it apparently doesn't. I found out the pressing the button with the swirly symbol + Q is the way to go.
Anyway, sometimes I just want to close an application with a click, so I push the X button and restart the closed application later, although - as I understand it - the application is still loaded (which is indicated by the small white dot in the dock). Just to be clear: Closing e.g. Safari with the red X closes the window but doesn't minimize it to the dock.
However, every so often a red-X-closed application remains white-dot-active but can't be restarted or maximised again, unless I first go to the dock and close it manually by use of the context menu.
This is an eminently stupid behaviour of OS-X if that was intended.
So, ist there a fix for this ? Or a way to tell the red X to close an application for good ?
What's the use of three colored window control buttons anyway, if two of them just basically minimize an application ?
Thanks for the help.
PS: Maybe I should mention that this behaviour is not reliably reproducable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It happens way too often to ignore, though.
Message was edited by: arottoI was hoping you'd say that. It is as it's supposed to do in that particular case at least.
Now just so you know, (though I suspect you already have some idea). That red cross will as a general rule close just that window. In some cases, (usually where the app only ever has that one window), clicking the X will close the app down, otherwise the app will still run in the background. This is normal. To close the program down you need to Quit it, ⌘Q.
You are right that it can't be maximised again, +that's because you didn't minimize the window you closed it.+ To minimize you need to press ⌘M, or click the minus symbol.
Strictly speaking the buttons do not both minimise, one maximises.
I think the minus button is there to put the window in the dock.
I think the plus button is there to alternate between minimum and maximum window sizes while that particular window is active on the desktop.
I think once you understand how it works you should find it consistent. Give it a shot and let us know.

I have recently recieved a insurance replacement and restored my data from the memory card, ever since this everytime I opperate the slider it comes up with 'closing applications' and obviously it closes them, this is driving me insane. according to the file manager there's about 38mb free, the only applicaion that I have running constantly is the nokia push email client.
Any ideas?
Cheersnext time don't restore settings because this causes problems. the problems a backup restore causes can be solved by resetting the phone. try a soft or a hard reset.
Factory settings reset. Type *#7780# and the phone's lock code (Nokia's default lock code is 12345). This reset restores the phone's original settings.
Soft reset. Type *#7370# and the phone's lock code.
Warning!Soft reset deletes all the phone's data (C drive).
Hard reset. Switch the phone off. Press and hold three keys together, the green key, the * key and the number '3'. While you are holding these keys, switch the phone on. Don't release these three keys before you see the Nokia hands logo.
Warning! Hard reset (as soft reset) wipes the C (phone memory) drive.

Closing Application - Headstart bug?
This mail was originally posted on the ODTUG maillist.
I am using Headstart Qms 5.0 and we are having problems with closing the
application window using the Windows Close button[x]. Detailed description
follows:
When window is closed by pressing the 'x' found at the right topmost part of
the screen, a message appears confirming whether to commit, not commit or
cancel changes. Once cancel button is pressed, it creates infinite loop or
sometimes shows the same message several times.
The temporary workaround was to comment out the before code added by QMS in
the key-exit trigger: qms$event_form('KEY-EXIT');
/* CGAP$TES_SEQUENCE_BEFORE */
/*begin
qms$event_form('KEY-EXIT');
end; */
/* CGNV$CLOSE_ALL_WINDOWS */
BEGIN
CGNV$.nav_enter_query := FALSE;
IF (:SYSTEM.MODE = 'ENTER-QUERY') THEN
exit_form;
ELSE
CGNV$.CLOSE_ALL_WINDOWS;
END IF;
END;
/* CGAP$TES_SEQUENCE_AFTER */
begin
qms$event_form('KEY-EXIT','AFTER');
end;
Although this solves the problem of infinite loop, this needs to be further
investigated because the code is actually handling the case where system
mode is 'ENTER-QUERY':
procedure close_current is
-- Purpose: Exit form, regardless of form mode
begin
-- Cancel query mode when running in query mode, and then
-- perform do_key('exit_form') as OFG generates code in KEY-EXIT trigger
to close
-- child forms when preference NAVCCF is set to Yes
do_key('cancel_query');
if name_in('system.mode') = 'ENTER-QUERY'
then
copy('10','system.message_level');
exit_form;
copy('0','system.message_level');
end if;
g_closing_current := true;
do_key('exit_form');
exception
when form_trigger_failure then raise;
when others then
qms$errors.unhandled_exception('qms$form.close_current');
end close_current;
Looks like a Qms bug to me. Is anyone familiar with this? All help highly
appreciated.
Rgds,
SiggiThis reply was originally posted on the ODTUG maillist.
I ran into this problem. It was a Forms 5.x bug. It was definitely fixed
in 6.0. I can't remember the patch set in 5.0 that fixed it. It was not a
Headstart problem, but rather a Forms bug.

Threads, clean up after closing application
Thanks in advance
OS: SUSE 8.2
IDE: netBeans 3.5
Beginner in Java
Hi I am creating Java Swing application and using threads to control certain areas of the program i.e. heartbeat thread being sent from a client to server . The problems is that when I close the client, I find that the heartbeat thread is still alive and clogging up my PC. I thought when you closed the application that the jvm would clean up and remove all associated threads of that particular client application. If any one could shed some light on this subject it would be appreciated.
gjfrasers.When a Java Virtual Machine starts up, there is usually a single non-daemon thread (which typically calls the method named main of some designated class). The Java Virtual Machine continues to execute threads until either of the following occurs:
-The exit method of class Runtime has been called and the security manager has permitted the exit operation to take place.
- All threads that are not daemon threads have died, either by returning from the call to the run method or by throwing an exception that propagates beyond the run method.

E-recruiting -Delete tabs for closed application groups (Menu Applications)
Hi gurus,
I want to delete the application group tabs from the menu "Applications" in e-recruiting.
The applications are stored on different tab pages. A tab page contains all applications that are based on actual job postings
(which are based on requisitions). In addition, a tab page also exists for unsolicited applications (applications that are assigned to an application group) for each application group. I would like to know who I can delete these tabs when an application group is closed. Currently, I have many tabs created without aplications inside and I would like to deleted and keep only the opened application groups. All the applications status are "rejected" or "hired" for each application group. There's no one "in process". Any idea how can I delete these tabs?
Thanks in advance,
Juanjo Garcin.I'm not aware of any relationship link built in eRC that would allow for a search to the candidates' 'My Applications' (key word...application) or 'Favorites' for expired or closed postings. Think of when you save a URL in your web browser favorites and the site is no longer valid. Your browser doesn't know it until it searches for the address in the URL you saved that doesn't exist.
I hope this is helpful.

Ending (not just closing) applications
Before the update, I would press and hold the Home button to be sure an app was closed and not running in the background and draining my battery, but since the update, that isn't working anymore. For example, to shut off my iPod, I can only pause it, not completely shut it off.
Can anyone help?Folks, this is a non issue due to the simple fact that the iPhone OS DOES NOT ALLOW APPLICATIONS TO RUN IN THE BACKGROUND! - it never did! Background processes are limited to a very few NATIVE Apple functions - iPod playback is one. When you stop a song from playing and then hit your home button, the iPod application is NOT still "running" in the background. The iPod application simply stores your last song/movie/whatever and the location within the clip to allow you to resume playback.
Once you hit the home button to exit an application, that app is completely closed and no longer taking a toll on your processor or battery. This is the reason why Apple implemented push notifications in 3.0 - so applications can still alert you of activity (i.e. an incoming im or a news alert) without the app running in the background. Instead, the monitoring takes place in the "cloud" (remote servers) that sends a message to an Apple server which in turn pushes a txt alert to your device. No process or backgroun apps are actually ever running on the iPhone, even for these new notifications!
