Closing captivate in an LMS

Hi,
(I can throw this at the moodle forums if you think best)
I have three quizes which i have uploaded to moodle as seperate items/lessons so I can use moodles rather splended "restrict access" and "activity completion" functions
which allows me to get the user to finish a task before stating another.  (wish it was SCORM 2004 though.....anyway....)
All works great except for one thing. When the quiz is finished the user has to manually click the moodle link "Exit activity"  which clears captivate and goes back to the the lesson contents
What I have done is on my last slide I tell the user to click it this link...... but it would be great if when captivate finished, it simulated clicking this exit activity moodle link.
captivate just hangs there
Is there a way of doing this in captivate, getting it to clear itself and jump to back to lessons
thanks
KBN

I agree that the way Moodle works in this case isn't great.  But it's the way their SCORM player is designed.  It's not something you can control in Captivate.  You can try setting the Captivate Project End option to Close, but that may or may not work depending on your browser.
The Moodle forums are likely to have seen this type of question a lot more and somebody may know how to customise their player in some way so that it works this way.
Also bear in mind that if you are delivering your course modules as Multi-SCO SCORM packages, then you can use the Auto Continue feature in Moodle so that as each module ends, the next one is launched automatically.  Then the user only has to exit the activity right at the end of the last module (or when they want to terminate their learning session).

  • CP8 - How to embed a pdf into a captivate slide (for LMS publication)?

    Hi,
How to embed a pdf into a captivate slide (for LMS publication)?
    WebObject doesn't work...
    Thanks

I accomplished this by publishing my PDF to a directory I called "PDFWebObjectEmbedFiles" on my webserver outside of where my published project lives.
For example...the PDF to embed lived at:
    http://mydomain.com/PDFWebObjectEmbedFiles/file_name_of_PDF_to_embed.pdf
Then I went inside of Captivate and inserted the Web Object widget.  I put the URL to my PDF inside the widget.  Then it loads perfectly with no problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Captivate and Canvas LMS by Instructure

    Hi
Does anyone know if there is any info or procedures for connecting Captivate to Canvas LMS by Instructure?
Can it be done using LTI?
Any info whatsoever would be helpful.
    Thank you!
    Matt

Thanks Tom.  Have you any experience building a middleware app that would allow Captivate to talk to Canvas? Or have you heard of anyone doing this?
I received this response from Canvas:
"You will most likely have to build your own app (middleware) that can bridge the communication gap between Adobe Captivate and LTI.  What is your programming language of preference?  We do a lot of ruby at Instructure, so we have a lot of example ruby apps on github, if you wanted to use  one of them as a place to start."

  • Still struggling with Captivate 6, Oracle LMS and SCORM 2004

Still can't get this course tracking with scores.  Herewith the screen shot.  Does anyone know if the settings I have chosen for the quiz are correct.  When I load the published course into the lms and test it, it shows "not attempted" prior to opening it and it gives the final score on the last quiz slide.  There is a slide after the last quiz slide.  It still seems not to transfer the scores to the lms.  I recently found out that we have Scorm 2004 version 4, so I changed the configuration setting as it was defaulted to version 3, but that still hasn't helped with the scores.  Under the start and end settings, I have chosen close project for the end.   I have been through a week of torture with this course!  Please can anyone assist as I'm not sure what to do anymore!

Oh no.  Now I'm panicking!  I will try it.  Thanks

This sounds like you have some major issue in this course project file.
Breaking it up into smaller files might not fix your issue.
I suggest you create a new blank CPTX project file, add one true/false quiz question, set it to report to LMS with the settings you have above, publish as a single SCO package zip file, and upload to both your LMS and SCORM cloud.
If this file doesn't even work, your installation of Captivate would have to be suspect and nothing you do in course module is going to fix that until you work out what the problem is.  If this very simple single-SCO lesson plays OK and reports successfully to the LMS, then we need to figure out what is lacking in your current file.
It could be that your current file has somehow become corrupted.  See the suggestions here for how to debug general corruption issues:

  • Spike in help calls - Captivate running on LMS

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing and increase in the number of help calls regarding Captivate running on an LMS.
We have around 150 Captivate 4 courses, each having an average of 4 SCORM lessons. We have around 8,000 users. Our courses run on a hosted LMS (InquisiqR3). We were averaging around 300 calls per month. Calls are up about 25% now. Outside of the normal calls (forgot password, weak wireless connections, user errors) we've begun to receive calls on courses that have been running fine for the past 3 years, but are now freezing up in the middle of a lesson, not passing SCORM data to the LMS at the end of a lesson and displaying a variety of error message. Our LMS host says they have not made any changes. And we have made no changes to any of these courses. Browser issues is the only thing making any sense to me. With all the updates that are occuring with the browsers these days. I know IE9 is causing some issues with our courses and the cure is to switch to compatibility view. FireFox seems to come out with an update every month. Many of our users can't tell us what browser they're using (ie: "I'm using RoadRunner browser").....
Anyway, is anyone else experiencing Captivate and LMS issues. I'm looking for trends.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    UPDATE:
Looks like there are issues when running Firefox with Flash 11.3. I was able dulplicate the errors some users were having when I used a computer with this Browser/Flash configuration. A Google search confirmed this. Updating to the latest Flash version solved the problem. Note: problems only occured with Captivate lessons containing Flash animations inserted into pages.

  • How to Prepare Captivate Content for LMS-recommendation

    RodWard
This was a fantastic tutorial! Helped me tremendously. Thank you.
If you are having issues getting your Captivate stuff up on your LMS (if it accepts Captivate), this tutorial sets it out the steps you need to take VERY clearly and completely, which someone like me (non-techie) really needs. I highly recommend it!
Now that we're in 8, responsive, I wonder about one step--and that is selecting Flash as my output mode. I imagine (?) there are now other choices (html 5?) there to choose from. Prior to this tutorial, I've never gotten that far, so I'll see it soon, I hope!

Selecting Flash (swf) is not an option for a responsive project.
And yes, Rod's guidlines are very good.

  • Captivate 4 AICC LMS

Hi everyone, Could someone help please? I have designed a Quiz in Captivate 4 and published it with AICC LMS Option. Now you can see that Captivate 4 produces the .au, .crs, .cst and .des files. I have brought the Quiz into the LMS (namely, Isoph Blue (Learn Something) using the four files. The Quiz appears in the LMS and you can open and answer the questions. But the issue is that no completion message or tracking is recorded in the LMS. The quiz tracking message for Quiz complete is not recorded in the LMS. Isoph Blue (Learn Something) is AICC comply. Some other AICC training modules have been tracked successfully, so the LMS is AICC comply What do I have to do to solve this issue, can somebody troubleshoot this? PS: I can provide more information and files, etc if needed.

I've been using Inquisiq EX from ICS Learning group for about 4 months (Hosted version). I've got 4 Captivate4 courses running on it so far with no problems (SCORM 1.2).
We spent about a year evaluating LMSs and finally settled on this one. They have a free trial available on their website.

  • InDesign files to Captivate 8 for LMS????

Our training manuals are currently published in InDesign. We are implementing an LMS and using Captivate as the authoring tool. What is the best way to get these files into Captivate? Should I copy/paste into PPT and then convert to InDesign????? Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a re-think might be needed. If you are working with InDesign files they are probably mostly oriented around TEXT. You could take the ideas incorporated in the text and design and develop interactive learning courses in Captivate. But there isn't really any benefit in just taking the InDesign files and then dropping them into Captivate, because that doesn't really make them any better, so save yourself the trouble of trying to figure out how to do that.
To create something interactive, you could stay in InDesign and add interactivity there--but it won't necessarily allow you to accumulate user's scores and such. There is a good program in this on Lynda.com.
Or, you could, as I said, start from the content in the InDesign documents and create a scorable course in Captivate.
Either way, the solution won't be instant, and there will be a learning curve involved. Best not to rush when you also have to learn. Clarify your long term goals for the project, see if there's an ugly short term solution (i.e., just putting up pdfs of the InDesign files on the LMS), and then get to work on the "beautiful" solution in the time you've bought.

  • Exporting the result of output of adobe captivate to moodle LMS

Please i am new to adobe captivate,
I'm working on a project and we are using Moodle as LMS, i have developed some learning material for student using adobe captivate. The learning material has some quiz in it (tutor marked quiz).
My major challenge is that i want to be able to put the scores from the quiz for each student into moodle as the student is taking the learnig material.
I published the adobe captivate file to flash.
    Thanks

For Moodle, I would suggest you use Report to LMS as Percent, not Score, and use Quiz Results Only.  Unless there is some compelling reason why you need to report Interactions and Score, I would just use Report Score.  The less information you throw at an LMS, the more likely it is to work for you in many cases.
In your Manifest settings, set the Duration to a number of minutes tha corresponds to the duration of the course or module but make sure it is in the format shown (e.g. 00:30:00 for 30 minutes).  Some LMSs won't work properly without this setting. If you will be setting up a number of courses or course modules in the same Moodle server, you need to alter the default Identifiers that Captivate inserts so as to differentiate between all the various courses and course modules you may need to track.  If they all have the same identifiers, Moodle will think they're all the same course and your results will be faulty.
When you add a course to Moodle you can specify if it's a SCORM course, which will mean that you can ONLY use a SCORM module as the content for that course.  But you can also insert a SCORM module as an activity in a normal Moodle course.  You just need to select that as the Activity type.
If you will be working a lot with Moodle, I suggest you go to www.moodle.org and start reading their forum posts about setting up e-learning courses.

  • Captivate 6 Compatible LMS

Is there an official / official list of LMS's that are compatible with Captivate 6?
We're just putting together an RFP and want to narrow down the potiental vendor list based on Captivate 6 compatabilty.
    Any/all recommedations appreciated.

Max – Captivate will work with any LMS that is SCORM 1.2/2004 and AICC complaint.
We went a step ahead and verified Captivate 6 content on a bunch of LMSs, to ensure it works out-of-the-box.

  • Loading time of Captivate movies within LMS

    Hello everyone.
My group created Captivate training modules, published them
as flash files with SCORM tagging, and are working with our LMS
team to view how the modules play within the LMS. Unfortunately we
are running into loading time issues with our movies. In my office
I have a T1 line and I still have to wait several minutes before
    our movies begin to play.
Once the moduleas are loaded they play fine. It's just the
load time that I'm concerned about.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what my group can
attempt to bring down these loading times? As of now all we have
are our modules published as swf files loaded into the LMS.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks in
    advance.

Captivate has a built-in limit of 60% loaded before it starts
    playing. I
don't think that can be customized but I could certainly be
    wrong.
    So things you can do:
    1. look to see if you can adjust the amount of the file that
    can be
downloaded before the file will play. Perhaps it's just a
    matter of not
    including a preloading image?
    2. Reduce the size of your movies so they download quicker.

  • Captivate and SkillPort LMS

I have been running into some issues testing a CBT with a
SkillPort-provided LMS, and was wondering if anyone had any
    experience working with SkillSoft/SkillPort.
The CBT was built using Captivate 2 and has a 10-question
quiz, with each question having a value of 10 points. I’ve
published the CBT to SCORM 1.2, opted to report quiz results only,
report the score to the LMS as a percent, and under Reporting
Level, only report the score. For Pass/Fail Options, the score is
set to 70% to pass, and if the user fails, he/she is allowed
infinite attempts (this setting was selected to offset an error
received in our first trial run). This CBT was then packaged
through the SkillPort Compatibility Toolkit (SCT) to prep it for
installation to our LMS. The SCT creates a par file from the CBT,
which is then saved to a zip file to be dropped into the installer.
I am running two identical LMS’s, for two separate
networks. On network A, the packaged CBT/course was installed and
tested successfully in the administrative environment and was made
visible to the user audience. On network B, the course exhibited
odd behavior – the quiz began to report odd scores (35% when
7 questions had been answered successfully; 127% when no questions
were answered, etc.). Going back to network A, I removed the
visibility of the course and tested it again in the admin
environment. After changing the visibility, the course then started
to behave as it did on network B.
I have reached out to SkillSoft for support with this issue,
but the reps have maintained that the problem stems not from the
LMS but from Captivate. Because the LMS has been glitchy in other
ways, I am inclined to think that this may be due to something
within the system, although I know that Captivate is glitchy is its
own regard. Also, I am by no means an experienced instructional
designer, but have been learning Captivate by doing.
Any assistance or insight would be most appreciated. I would
really like to speak with someone who has had experience with a
    SkillSoft/SkillPort LMS.
    Many thanks.
    - Laura

Here's the result of trying the option "Status as defined by report data" (under the "Report Pass or Fail" section of the Quiz Preferences window): (Reminder about my goal: I want SkillPort to totally ignore the question results and to base course completion on the learner's having viewed all of the slides.)
The SkillPort "Completed" field was still correct (i.e., Completion was based on viewing all of the slides, not on the question answers)
However, Captivate apparently still passed the results of the question answers to SkillPort, because SkillPort's "Current Score" field still continues to reflect the percentage of questions answered correctly, rather than the percentage of slides viewed.
So the "Status as defined by report data" option didn't seem to work any better than the "Complete/Incomplete" option.
Here's an idea -- What would happen if I de-selected the "Enable reporting for this project"? (see illustration below) Then would the LMS (SkillPort) totally ignore question results and base course completion simply on slide views?
    Thanks again for any insights.

  • Captivate 4/SCORM/LMS

    Adobe E-Learning Suite CS4 w/
    Captivate 4
    Flash CS4
    etc...
I'm pretty sure everyone looking at that subject is sighing and rolling the eyes. lol.
In any event I really need some help, as soon as possible.
Let's go with that I have NO experience with SCORM compliance or LMS.
I had created a Software Simulation CBT, basically used for employees to learn how to use an application that my client uses.
I had originally done this all in one, and it ended up being around 150 slided.
The opening slide has a 16 second Flash produce introduction with 16 second audio.
Only other audio is produced from clicking the "Next" button
Only other Flash is from FMR demonstrating the software (very minimal)
It seemed that publishing such a large file produced very inconsistant files - sometimes very buggy in sections - back button not working properly, getting stuck on quiz slides, etc.
So I broke up the large file in 8 separate files. Intro, Modules 1 - 6, Conclusion.
Now... Here comes my next problem. I set up all the SCORM/Quiz reporting.  Each of the modules has a quiz associated with it for reporting. Intro and Conclusion have reporting on the last "NEXT" button.
What I am asked from our client, is that the employee will log onto the LMS - click on the Course Name - and it will launch the intro.  Now to the user, the rest of the course should be seamless.  It's for the most part (except for one section in Module 1) completely linear.  When the user gets to the last slide of the Intro section, when they click next it should go to the first slide of Module 1.  It should have the built in TOC that I built in the flash files.  I did all the SCORM 2004 reporting options, manifest file, etc.  I used the SCORM Packager provided (the aggregator) and sucessfully created a .ZIP to upload to the LMS.
I downloaded Moodle, full package, to use as a sandbox LMS on my local system.
When I upload the .zip file produced from the SCORM packager, and run it in the LMS the TOC does not show all of the modules.
Also, when I get to the last slide of Intro and click "NEXT" it just goes to a blank screen.
How do I make this a seamless transaction with proper LMS reporting - which is NOT pass/fail it's just completion.
    Anybody still reading yet??
Please let me know if you need anymore information, it's very vital that I get this figured out by this weekend as our client is requesting a final product by Monday/Tuesday.  I really really appreciate any help that can be provided, thank you all very much in advance.
I fear I may be in over my head here...  which is not an option.

Imagine that a SCORM course is a book. This book has separate chapters - each chapter is a SCO. If you have a SCORM course that consists of 7 SCO's you would still only have one course in the LMS. Depending on how the SCORM communication is set up YOU define how the course should work.
Example of a SCORM manifest (NOT correct - only an example)
    Title: Course title
SCO1: Chapter 1 - Introduction - introduction.html (the HTML files which has the apiwrapper and loads your swf)
SCO2: Chapter title - resource link
SCO3: Chapter title - resource link
Okay, so I guess my question is this then.  Is it MY responsibility as the programmer to link the SCOs together within Captivate? or is that done within the SCORM manifest? Or does the LMS handle this?
I would say that it is your responsibility. The programmer / developer would need to put in the SCORM calls in the chapters/SCO's for it to work. This cannot be done afterwards.
In other words, lol, does the next button on the last slide of each module have to "Open File/URL" or can it simply say "Continue" as it does now and the LMS, via the manifest, will know to open the next module and start that slide annnnd will it report as one final score?? That's the other thing, I would like it to report one score for the overall course (it's actually not a score, it's just a complete/incomplete)
No you would need to do two things at the end of each module.
1 - Set the particular module as "Completed" in the LMS by using a SCORM command
2 - Close the particular module in the LMS by using a SCORM command.
Once these two are done then the LMS will unload the current module and automatically fetch the next module in the SCORM manifest and run that.
If you are only interested in reporting complete/incomplete then this is enough. Just call the SCORM commands to set each module as completed and then the SCORM command to unload the module. Once they go through the last module all is completed and the course is "passed".
As for the TOC I am a bit confused.
Do you have a TOC for each of the modules created in Captivate? If so then this will work just fine in an LMS.
If you have a TOC using the Aggregator then you would of course need to use Captivate to make the SCORM package. Another option could be to check if the LMS has a "TOC" of it's own. Many LMS' build their own TOC based on the SCORM imsmanifest.
One suggestion I have for you.. Make a testfile for your client. This file should basically be what you tried to upload to Moodle first. Completely done in Captivate and Aggregator. Then ask them to load this in their LMS and see if they encounter any problems first. As I said Moodle isn't the best choice for troubleshooting LMS / SCORM issues ;o) Perhaps everything works perfectly well in their corporate LMS.
