Closing programs before sleep

Before I updated to 10.8.4, before I put my mac to sleep I would close the program displayed on top like firefox etc. then all the other ones open would display as I closed them before I would put it to sleep. Now after I close the one program it doesn't display the others open. Is there a setting I missed. I don't like programs running while in sleep mode if I don't check the bar.

It could be the HD, that would be good because it's also possible it's more serious. However the easiest way to check is use the oringinal Install disc the computer came with or your Leopard upgrade DVD to boot the system. Insert either into the SuperDrive, then restart while holding down the Option key. Choose the Install DVD, select the language then click the Utilities menu and choose Disk Utility. Once in Disk Utility then run Repair Disk, if it's the HD then it will report errors. Sometimes you may need to run Repair Disk 2-3x for it to report anything. If it does begin reporting errors Google the error code and see what turns up or you can post it here where someone may know what it means.
If the machine will not boot from the Install Disc then you have other problems and will need to take it into an Apple Store or AASP to be professionally diagnosed.

I am trying to install a download of a trial of PhotShop Elements 10. I get a message telling me to close PhotoshopServer and dynamiclinkmanger before clicking "continue". I have never heard of these programs and I cannot find them anywhere on my computer. What gives? - Thanks. LG

Which operating system are you using?  Have you tried using the Task manager to locate these processes?

  • Is there a program that unmount & mount external drive before sleep ??

Im looking a software or a script that will allow to unmount NAS drive before sleep and mount it back on wake up.
    Thanks for any help

The energy savings is minuscule and most electromechanical devices fail when starting up, not when running. As for the NAS thing, I'll leave that to others, since I don't have a network or depend on ext HDs being tethered to my machines.

  • Strange Shutdown Before Sleep & Airport Network Corruption

I'm having a very odd problem and I can't seem to find any resolve. Hopefully someone can provide some kind of insight.
I have a PowerBook G4 1.5GHz running OS X 10.5.6. I connect to OS X Server when at the office. I've owned the machine since August 2005 and it's no longer under warranty. I received a replacement battery from Apple for my original battery when it was recalled. The replacement battery was conditioned upon receiving it but it has never had the same kind of life as the original battery that came with the PowerBook, although it definitely runs cooler.
I didn't notice any issues running under Tiger and have only noticed that problems began under one of the Leopard updates, although not exactly sure which one it started under.
The issue seems to be largely with the system not going to sleep when on low battery, but instead, simply shutting itself down. I get the low battery warning, but if I just let it go, the system will eventually shut down without warning. It has occasionally shut down with about 20% battery life left on the power reading in the menu bar.
When I connect a power source and start the computer back up, the date has been reset, indicating that the machine has died completely.
Here's the really strange part. The last wireless network I was connected to seems to now be corrupt and I have to remove it from my Airport preferred networks and add it fresh. It's as if the password is not the same and it prompts me for the password again, it doesn't keep it saved and I have to enter it every time I connect to that network.
For the shut down before sleeping part and the clock resetting, is it just that the battery on the logic board needs to be replaced because it's dead?
On the shutting down before sleeping issue, is anyone else having this same problem?
As for the Airport corruption, does anyone have any ideas?

I am having the same problem - I have 20% battery and then the computer shuts downs and when I restart the date & time have been reset. However, I do not have the airport corruption issue. Anyone know what's going on? I tried to update my battery using the "PB Battery Updater" but that program quits unexpectedly. I'm not sure what else to try...

  • MBP running out of battery power before sleeping - Help!

    Hi
My MacBook Pro has been running out of battery power before the memory-saving sleep mode kicks in, so it dies with a little click of the HD. It's not a hibernation state as when I reattach the power supply it boots up a new session.
I've noticed this since upgrading to Snow Leopard last year, but put it down to an old battery that had 45% charge and wasn't powering the MBP properly. I now have a replacement A1175 5600mAh battery which is giving me 2-3hrs usage (which I'm pleased at), but now it still dies before sleeping!
I have tried to cycle the new battery, but can't. I have reset the SMC several times, with no effect.
I used to cycle the battery every week or two, running it down until it would no longer wake from sleep, recharge overnight etc, but now I can't do this because it will die before sleeping!
I've read quite a few articles over the net about this issue, but there seems like no cure. It's really annoying me now as I frequently work on the move and a dying MBP could potentially be disastrous.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Is there something I haven't tried yet? I think it's a late '06 MBP.

If you are not getting a warning, then there is something amiss with your battery. If a SMC reset and calibration does not fix the problem, then you may need to make an appointment at the genius bar and arrange to have your battery tested.
My old battery started doing the same thing--shutting down without warning. I replaced it, and the replacement battery started doing the exact same thing. I then returned the replacement, and the next replacement battery behaves in a normal fashion.
My first battery was worn out. My second battery was defective. My third battery is good.
Your battery should still be under warranty. Go back to where you got it and show them what it is doing and see if you can get a replacement.
    Good luck!

When open iTunes it starts OK then a message from Windows appears, 'DATA EXECUTION PREVENTION Windows closed program'. Then the whole thing shuts down. Does anybody know how to sort this out please. I am using XP operating system and have recently updated iTunes. Thanks

    Hi alanfromharlow,
It sounds as if iTunes is failing to launch properly on your Windows computer. You don’t mention what version of Windows you have, but one of these two articles should be useful to you -

  • Screen dimming before sleep

No matter how many times I check and uncheck the option to "reduce brightness before sleep" I find that a few days later the screen starts dimming again. When I go to see if the option is unchecked like it should be, it always is!! Anyone else having this problem?

Note that the half-dimming is there for a purpose. The florescent tubelets that illuminate your LCD are very expensive. the half-dimming is there to extend their life, and yet provide near-instant illumination if the computer detects activity by the user.
Admittedly, it would be nice if this was configurable by the user, but that is the reason the half-dimming is there.

  • Do I need to unauthorize my CC programs before a computer reformat?

About to switch out my main drive for a new SSD and I'm wondering what I need to do as far as unauthorize any of the CC programs before I do this?
    Thanks!

Moving this discussion to the Creative Cloud Download & Install forum.
Beldave you can go under the Help Menu and select Sign Out or Sign Out from the Creative Cloud desktop application to deactivate.  If you fail to do so then you maybe prompted to reset your activations.  In this case you would need to sign back in, when prompted, on any other computers the Creative Cloud is installed on.

I have tried the same download url in the browser and it works fine. Please suggest me, What causes this issue??, how to resolve this??
I am using http protocol to download this file.

Even i tried setting URLRequestDefaults.idleTimeout property, but didn't help.

  • Macbook re-opens closed programs on restart also lose track pad preferences

I have a couple of problems with my Macbook Pro (2.53mhz Core 2 Duo, running Mountain Lion) which I think maybe related.
1/  After restart Excel, Chrome, Photoshop, Finder and System Preferences all open up even though I have close all these programs before the restart. It's as if the computer has remembered a time when the battery ran out or it was shut down with all these programs open, and keeps reverting back to this. I can't figure out how to make it restart without all these programs opening up again.
2/ I lose my trackpad setting after restart, specifically tap to click, (I've read a few posts on this and none of the fixes i.e changing Read/Write in home folder, deleteing pref files in library etc,  have worked so far) this is really annoying as the trackpad is failing so I have to click it really hard to make it work, if the tap to click is disabled, as it always is after restart,
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Many Thanks

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Display dims before sleep, no matter the setting

My MacBook will dim its screen (ie: reduce brightness) after about 10 seconds of idle time. I've read to stop this you need to uncheck the "dim display before sleep" checkbox under energy saver preferences. I've done this for both the power adapter and batery settings, but the display still dims! It will dim when running from the batery or the power adapter. It makes watching DVD's useless.
Has anyone else seen this? I find it annoying, but it's driving my wife crazy.
    PowerMac G4 Quicksilver 867mhz, MacBook 2GHz (white)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

One option to try would be to change the login settings so that you are not automatically logged in when you start up to the computer. After you make this change, log out, log back in, toggle that display sleep setting on then back off and check the result.
Something else that might be worth a try...
First, I'm not sure what preferences, if any, will need to be reset after this. Also, I have not done this and do not know the result. As always, backup your stuff.
    1. Go to the folder ./Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration (not your Library folder but the one at the root level of your hard disk).
    2. Drag the file named com.apple.PowerManagement.plist to the trash. You will be prompted to enter your admin password when you do this.
    3. Restart.

    that is correct.
all older versions of adobe products (except some versions of adobe acrobat) can not only be installed on the same computer but can be open and used at the same time.  eg, i routinely have flash pro cc and flash pro cs6 open at that same time.
