Closing the cover of my macbook

Hello,
i have pluged in an external display to the macbook (with mini-dvi to dvi adapter). Now i want to close the cover of the macbook, without going into the sleep modus. I want to go on working with the external display.
How can i do that?
Thanks for your help.
Achim

I would disagree. Its an Apple-given technique. The kind of temperatures that your Macbook gets upto during normal use shouldnt cause any harm. The majority of cooling actually takes place under the MB via fans etc, there is very little ventilation on the 'keyboard surface'. I have imported 10 CD's in the past 30 mins or so, putting the CPU under a fairly heavy strain, enough to make the fans run, and the surface of my MB is warm to the touch, no more. Each to their own however, but it wouldnt concern me to run my MB in such a manner for a reasonable length of time (many many people do so.)

  • Firefox quits when closing the cover of my MacBook Pro (putting it to sleep)

Self-explanatory (see title). I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro, running Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3). Whenever I close the lid to put the MacBook Pro to sleep, Firefox quits. I don't think it crashes or hangs; when I open the lid later, Firefox is just not running, and must be re-opened.
This is incredibly annoying, because I have to connect through a proxy server at work, and this results in me having to Restore Previous Session, re-authenticate, and then wait for 10-25 tabs (my To-Do list) to be reloaded. Agonizing. Help?

    Hi,
When I look at your system details, it does have a crash ID on it (bp-0bffc60f-9713-426c-b7b3-214962120301), so you might find some help in the article about crashes, where it describes starting Firefox in safe mode and then seeing if the problem still happens:

  • Is it okay to closed the lid after using Macbook Pro even the it is hot?

Hi. I'm using MBP early 2011 I5 and I noticed the temperature getting high and palm rest is getting hot/warm when I'm playing games. Is this normal? temperature around 80 degree celsius accoringding to istat.
Also, after using the MBP, ofcourse the palm rest is hot/warm. Is it okay to close the lid after using it?
    Thanks.

My practice has been to let the MBP cool a few minutes before closing the lid, so it's trapping less heat. I doubt this has much saving effect on the logic board components, but my MBP is old enough to have a glossyplastic display cover. It would look ugly if it started to warp.

  • I closed the cover on my IPad with a draft email open.  Now I can only edit the email but cancel and send are grey and nothing else in email seems to work.  What to do?

I closed my iPad cover with a draft email open.  When I reopened the cover, the cancel and send buttons are grey and all I can do is edit the email.  The email app seems frozen.  What do I do?

Try closing the Mail app completely and see if it works properly when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work (or if you can't get to the homescreen) then do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

There is no cover that will lock the iPhone.  The only way to lock it is to press the button at the top, or wait until it locks automatically.

  • How to continue to play iTunes even after the cover of my MacBook Pro is closed?

I would like to play iTunes in my MacBook Pro during travel.  As it is better and safer to keep the MacBook closed during travel, I would like the iTunes to continue to play.  How is it to be achieved?

    There is no easy solution.
An iPod will do the job.

  • Using the iBook with the cover closed

Can you hook up external monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc and use the iBook with the cover closed? I know that usually closing the cover puts it to sleep.

The keyboard is an important component of the cooling of the CPU. Excess heat dissipates through the keyboard. Closing the cover would cause damage to other components from the heat. You can run iTunes with the screen off if that helps. Do that in systems prefs>energy saver and set the screen to go off in three minutes (or one) and the CPU to stay on indefinetly.

  • Closing the smartcover does not lock/unlock my ipad

My smartcover does not activate lock/unlock any more

Yes, that's the first thing I checked. Now I have reset the iPad, checked that software is up to date, turned off/on and still the same. Closing the cover has no effect. Wonder what else it could be?

  • The display on my MacBook won't always turn on after coming out of sleep

Just 10 min ago i had to use the bathroom. I closed the lid of my MacBook. When I came back I opened it up. The disk drive made the usual noise, the fan turned on, and keyboard lit up, but the screen didn't turn on. So then I held down the power button until I heard the fans go off. Then I hit it again and the macbook started up like when it would after hot swapping the battery. The MacBook was also charging during the entire time.
    What is wrong?
    Any suggestions?

Yes my issue is that, for any extended period, the display won't turn on at all - a hard reboot is required. And it went away if the total number of ram is 3gb or similar (not matter what bar of 2gb ram I used) so possibly the ram is not the cause - i also have test with memtest & apple hardware test (extended / loop-mode)
I'm thinking of installing windows 7 / vista in bootcamp to see if the problem occurs to figure out if this's drivers / software issue with mac osx. I will come back and update on this later.
I have rung apple support and they tell me that only apple certified ram will ensure compatibility and the said that ram is the issue - I used OWC ram (which never had any compatibility issue before).
    Stayed tune!

can the cover on the macbook pro be closed while playing music?

Air is drawn in through the keyboard for cooling, so I would recommend leaving it open 1/2-1" so the air can move.

  • Preventing MacBook Pro from sleepting when the cover is closed

I'd like to prevent the system from sleeping when the cover is closed, at least when it is on the power supply.
Right now, it sleeps whenever the cover is closed. As a result, my nightly backup (ordinarily scheduled for the wee hours) doesn't run.
Also, I want to use the laptop at home with an external screen, keyboard and mouse, and it would be convenient to fold it up to get it out of the way when doing so.
    Thanks,

' Overheating in clamshell mode is rearely an issue if you're running on the 9400M and the system- / resource-demands aren't particularly hectic. It is something one should always just keep an eye on though anyways - just to be safe, no?
' Otherwise - there is a pay-for (shareware) program you can download and install that will give you the facility you're looking for... I'm afraid I can't remember it's name right now though... Alternatively - and the solution I myself use - try downloading and using a mini-app called "InsomniaX" - for which I can't provide a link I'm afraid, but a Net-search will quickly turn up! It's freeware (donations possible but not required) and works great - a number of options available to tune it somewhat to your needs!

  • Does my macbook pro charge with the cover closed?

I just noticed that the battery does not charge to full when the cover is closed..  I always thought that it did.

It does, perhaps you need to do a #1 SMC reset and a Hardware check
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If it continues, take the machine to Apple for service, a sensor or button isn't working properly.
