Closing the last tab.

I would like to be able to close the last tab and also to close all tabs.
There two reasons I want to do this:
1. I am finished with the tab, and I want it to go away so it won't distract me.
2. There is something on the tab I don't want other people to see. I want it to go away rapidly without having to shut down Firefox entirely along with that delay.
Every other program I use lets me close the last tab.

The Last Tab Close Button add-on will add a close tab button to the last tab - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/last-tab-close-button/
The Close All Tabs (Reloaded) add-on gives you the option to add a toolbar button to close all tabs - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/close-all-tabs-reloaded/

  • If I cannot "go back" when using a website I cannot close that specific tab and have to close them all. I have had to restart from scratch several times today . Having a choice of closing the last tab only would be very useful. Why can't I?

After I browsed a page in a websit, I could not close that page by using the X in the rt. hand top corner as when I did this Firefox told me that it would close all tabs. It was the only way out so I closed them and started from scratch.

    mratlasdreamz,
which app are you running when you get the annoying chime as you try to correct a typo?
If you’re sure that you have a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU and 2 GB of 667 MHz RAM, then what you have is not a MacBook Pro, but an Early 2008 MacBook (did it really cost £2000 then?) — and with that model of MacBook, you could upgrade to Lion. Whether you stay with Snow Leopard or upgrade to Lion, you might find that upgrading your RAM from 2 GB to 4 GB could be helpful.
You can confirm which model you have by selecting About This Mac on the Apple menu, clicking the “More Info…” button, then clicking on the “System Report…” button, and looking at the “Model Identifier” value in the Hardware Overview section. If you have an Early 2008 MacBook, then the model identifier will say “MacBook4,1”. If it gives a different model identifier, then include that model identifier in your reply, and we can determine which model you have, and which CPU and speed of RAM it uses.
Note that Firefox 26 still supports Snow Leopard, and that Mozilla makes no CPU recommendations for Firefox on OS X other than “an Intel x86 processor”.

  • Usually, Firefox closes when closing the last tab on it. Now it doesn't. How do I change it back to closing when the last tab is closed?

I've checked my about:config settings beforehand since I hear the setting for this is usually in there. It's still the same and hasn't been changed. As far as I know, I haven't downloaded any add-ons recently that would cause this change. None have been installed recently. Here's a screenshot of the about:config.

    Did you try Safe Mode?
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

  • When I close the last tab I am sent to my desk top and do not stay on Firefox, but if I hit the open button again it says Firefox is running??

This started this last weekend. When I close the last tab instead of staying on Firefox it goes directly to my desktop. If I hit the Firefox icon again I get a message saying that Firefox is still running and that I should restart. But if I just hit open again it reopens or shows Firefox home page again. How do I stop this?

Set the pref browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab to false on the about:config page to prevent closing the last tab from closing that window, you need to use "File > Close Window" or the close X on the title bar.
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.
You may need to wait a bit longer before restarting Firefox.

  • Close the last tab without closing the firefox app

    greetings!
1.I would like to close the last tab without closing the app. The behaviour I expect is the app to open a new blank tab when I close the last tab. Currently I cannot close the last tab which already has some website opened in it.
    2. When I open a new tab, i'm forced to enter a website address. I expect to the app to simply open a blank new tab & leave it to me whether to enter a address or not.
Thanks for your support. I love firefox for Android.

well, I would prefer to leave it to the end user whether he wants the awesome screen while pressing a new tab button/ or open a simple blank page. Let him choose it in the config.
    regards,

  • While I was customizing my FF30 {again} I closed my last tab by accident

While I was customizing my FF30 {again} I closed my last tab by accident and found out you have to open a second window as closing the customization tab/window,
Also my reload button (not on the address bar) doesn't work . My magnifier, download both disappeared. My Ghostery, Stop Load and Save Image buttons also disappeared. This was right after Microsoft update on Win7.
    I've fixed everything, but I miss having my bookmarks on the bottom {too much clutter at the top, even to the point where I wish my address bar would hide off of the screen } {rant over }

You can toggle the browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab pref to false to prevent that closing the last present tab from closing Firefox.
You can open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location bar and you can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue

  • The last tab, furthest to the right, does not load when restarting FireFox.

Whenever I restart firefox, the last tab I had opened does not load. The matter of restarting can be any kind: new add on installed, new firefox update, restarting the browser manually, or restarting my computer so that firefox is automatically closed. It's always the same problem. The last tab will be displayed as my New Tab page, which is blank. I can have 3 tabs open, and the first 2 will load just fine, but the last doesn't. This means that if I restart for an add-on or something, I need to go back into my history to pull up this last tab, which is inconvenient. And it may not have been my most recent tab. I may open this last tab, go back to an earlier tab and surf the web on that, building my history, and then restart firefox for whatever reason. In those instances, I need to open up the history window and dig for that last tab from memory.

Alright. It appears to be an addon called Load Tabs Progressively. I'll just leave that disabled.

  • When I open a new URL I want it to open in a new tab instead of replacing the last tab in line.

When I have several tabs open and I open a new URL the new URL replaces the last tab on my bar. I would just like for the new URL to open in a new tab.

  • In the latest version of Firefox, I am not able to open a new tab neither by Ctrl+T nor from the File Tab nor by pressing the '+' sign next to the last tab

In the latest version of Firefox, I am not able to open a new tab neither by Ctrl+T nor from the File Tab nor by pressing the '+' sign next to the last tab. So the only solution is opening "New window" which is extremely messy. Kindly help me with this issue.

hello, can you try to replicate this behaviour when you launch firefox in safe mode once? if not, maybe an addon is interfering here...

  • The New Tab button on the right side of the last tab is missing. How do I get it back?

The New Tab button on the right side of the last tab is missing on the Tab bar How do I get it back?

For now, you can try using Ctrl + t to open new tabs if you can't open them otherwise, but try right clicking the tabs bar, clicking "customize," and then in the window that comes up try clicking the "restore default set" button. I don't know if it will work in your case but it wouldn't hurt to try.

  • I have a question about the suggestion that only the last tab loaded shows up so Firefox can load faster.

    My question is this:
If I do as you suggest in the General Tab of Preferences - see below - how do I get all the other tabs back if only the last one shows? If they are hidden, I need to know how to access them.
Your directions which I need help with....Don’t load tabs until selected. Voila! Now, only the last tab you were working in will be loaded on startup.
    THANKS.

The Tabs are all there, the only thing this preference does is tell firefox to only download the open tab. If you click on the other tabs, they will download too. The theory is, by only downloading and displaying one webpage, it can be displayed for you faster than if 5 webpages were being downloaded at once.

  • Until the latest upgrade, I could open a new tab by clicking on a cross at the end of the last tab. Now there is nothing there. I canno open a new tab. Can you help me

At the right of the last tab, there was a cross (x). If I wanted a new web site opened while keeping the one I was in, I clicked on this and it opened a new page and I could go to other sites of my choice. The cross is no longer there, and I cannot find out how to open a new tab, and go to a new web site.

You can find the New Tab button showing as a '+' on the Tab bar.<br />
You can open the Customize window and drag the New Tab button that shows as a plus sign (+) from the Tab bar on another toolbar and it will become a regular toolbar button like the New Tab button that you have in Firefox 3 versions.<br />
If you can't find the New Tab button then click the "Restore Default Set" button in the Customize window.<br />
If you want the New Tab button at the far right end of the Tab bar then place a flexible space to the left of it.<br />

  • Why does a box appear under the pointer with words for the last tab clicked on?

When I am searching for something I get to a site and the pointer can be anywhere and then a small box appears under the pointer with words for the last tab clicked on. If I move the pointer the box disappears and then reappears at the new location. How can I stop that from happening??

  • Firefox closes when I close the last tab, on one system not the other

Ctrl-W closes the last tab. On my Windows XP machine I get an empty window Good. This is like Windows and Excel, you can close all pages without quitting the application.
On my Windows XP Professional system it Exits Firefox. Not good. I don't want it to close until I hit Alt-F4.

    1. Read about [http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config about:config]

  • About:newTab opens after I close the last tab instead of homepage

I use SpeedDial extension, and it's set as my homepage. Also I change setting browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab to false.
In Firefox 11, when I close the last tab, new tab with homepage (SpeedDial) opens, in Firefox Nightly new tab with about:newtab opens.
How can I change this behavior to act like Firefox 11?

I tried to set browser.newtabpage.enabled to false, it doesn't help.
