Is there any way of the laptop to NOT go to sleep when i close the screen????

i THINK you just close it and then click the mouse and it will wake up. im not sure if you HAVE to have a monitor connected too.

Click on iTunes and do comand Q. Be sure you are quitting iTunes to finish update and not just closing the screen.

MacBook Restarts After Closing The Screen

I have a new MacBook that I purchased the first of October. It has been running great until recently. About a week ago it started restarting itself after I closed the screen. I can use the laptop with no problem and then close the screen to let it goto sleep. When I reopen the MacBook it will restart the machine. At first I thought there was something with OS. So I installed a new hard drive and reinstalled OS X. The MacBook still restarts after I close the screen. I have installed the new firmware updates that has come thru on software updates. I am stumped. Does anyone have any ideas?

The same is happening here, though only intermittently. I have a MacBook 2.0 purchased in May. The issue just started within the last day or two. I have not tried reinstalling anything or swapping drives, but on the surface, this would appear to possibly be related to the "MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.0" released and applied 11/13. This was said to address "start up and wake-from-sleep issues on MacBook computers."

Yesterday I noticed that my mbp 2011 dos not sleep when closing the screen cover. Today I Turner my laptop in. However the fan was working loudly and stayed loud. After Start I noticed an X on Battery symbol. Clicking on it, it showed 'no battery.' I found out that a potential solution for this problem was SMC reset. I also noticed that the leds on magsafe was not lightning. Despite this I tried to execute the smc reset as described on apple support site. Switching off, plugin the magsafe connector, pushed the buttons shift + alt+ ctrl + power. Then i pushed the power button, but my mbp is not turning on. I pushed several times on the power button but nothing works. The magsafe is also dark meaning the leds not lightning. Can anyone here help me on this ?

Problem solved by my own. But do not how :) magsafe again working and the laptop tooo

Powering up after closing the screen

Ok so this is somewhat of a odd question I know but please hang in there. So I have a rental MPB and well it is generally crappy. I am having some issues with it that are so infuriating that there are times I just want to throw it out the window. So as I said it is a rental and I have been keeping it booted into Windows 7 via bootcamp because I have a better MBP and I like usign that in OSX. Additionally, there are a suite of programs that I need to run on a frequent basis, about 3-7 or more times a week and it is a pain to keep booting into windows and back on my other computer and additionally I am not a huge fan of keeping parallels running all the time and booting that up takes just about as long as an entire reboot. So now the rental MBP is what I think a 2009 model and it has an Intel Core2 Duo 2.26GHz and 2GB RAM and is running a 64-bit OS. I have the setting configured on the MBP in windows 7 enterprise to put the computer to sleep when I close the lid. Now my problem is I am having the hardest time waking the computer sometimes. I regularly cannot get the screen to come on or the computer to wake and am forces into hard shutdown and reboot. How can I avoid this? I need to be closing the lid often and opening it because I am very mobile with the labtop and need to transport it. I know it goes to sleep by the glowing light on the front, but when I open the screen it goes off and the screen just stays black. I cannot get it to show the login screen after sitting and just pressing and and all of the keys on the keyboard. Is there any way to aid in waking this computer, am I experiencing this problem because I am using bootcamp?
P.S. all of the apple software is up todate I have been checking reguraly.

You're probably experiencing the problem because of the defective GPU on the 15" mid-2010 models. While it's a repair that Apple will fix for nothing, since the computer doesn't belong to you I don't see that there's anything you can do about it - complain to the rental company about not having the problem 'fixed' I suppose.

Closing the screen.

I'm a recent convert from a windows based system after many many years.. My question is this, on my old dell laptop, i was able to configure windows xp to allow me to close the screen without the computer going into sleep mode. I am wondering if it is possible to do this with my powerbook. Thank you very much.

Hi, Les, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Your Powerbook is designed to sleep when closed as a defense against overheating and cooking its display, which would be particularly likely if you were to carry the PB in a padded bag or backpack while it was running. Under those same conditions, your hard drive would be extremely vulnerable to damage because its heads wouldn't be parked, and any jolt or jar could crash them into the data surface. You can't circumvent this design feature unless you have an external monitor, keyboard and mouse connected to the Powerbook. See this article:

There are some extremely ill-advised third-party hacks that can prevent display-closed sleep. I urge you strongly to avoid them if you value your Powerbook.

Closing The Screen/Lid on my Macbook

I am new to this forum and I am hoping I can make some contributions and indeed get some assistance from the group for my new Macbook. I have switched over having been a windows user for 10 years plus.
I like to view DVDs on my Dell 22" screen and I have a small problem..
I dont want to have both screens on at the same time...and when I close my Macbook lid, it powers down.??
Can I set this up so I only have one screen on..and can I set my power options so that when I close the lid on my Macbook, it does not shut down.?
Any advice much appreciated

Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Apple family. What you're referring to is "clamshell" mode, check out this link for more explanations:

The important thing with this mode is consistency with your peripherals.

When closing a screen I have, in the past, used the File button [top left] this produced the drop down menu, there was the option to "CLOSE TAB", which I used, this closed the screen but left Firefox open, this option has now disappeared, the only way I can close a screen now is to exit back to the Desktop and reopen Firefox.

Thanks for the prompt response, unfortunately whilst the solution you proposed works on most tabs when I am down to the last one absolutely nothing I do will get rid of it, at present I cannot close the Mozilla Add-ons Manager tab. I have tried your suggestion followed by clicking the cross in the top right of the screen, I have also tried File and then exit. But when I next click onto the Mozilla icon it returns to the last tab shown on the screen.

My 2014 Macbook Pro's charger is not secure. It flicked out while closing the laptop and cracked the screen, is this something apple will repair as its the chargers fault?

I have a 2014 15" Retina display Macbook Pro.
Moving on from my 13" 2012 Macbook Pro the charger on the 2014 model isn't as good and keeps flicking out, and not staying in place.
Unfortunately it flicked out on its own at the wrong point, when I was closing the screen. This resulted in the screen cracking!! Because this is a fault with the Macbook's charger that has cracked my screen, will apple cover it and replace my screen?
If not does anyone know how much screen replacements cost at apple?
I have applecare but screen damage does not cover it.

There's no one from Apple here, so we can't advise you on what it would cost to replace the screen. You should just take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP (making an appointment first) and get and estimate for replacement.
I doubt that Apple will fix the screen gratis - they will likely pin it down to a user accident. If you can actually demonstrate that it's the fault of the adapter, you may get a break.

How to Lock the Screen on a MacBook Pro with Retina

Hello everyone,
I would like to know how to do something to my computer so that the next time I want to get on, I need to enter in a password (I believe that it is called locking).
On a normal MacBook Pro, I believe that simply closing the screen works, but it doesn't work on my Retina display MacBook Pro.
Do you have any advice for me?

Print with Preview: Screen option

Might be a bit obscure but this is a question about the screen option in print with preview.
For the purposes of photoetching (transferring a half tone positive image onto a metal plate through the use of photosensitve film for the purposes of fine art printmaking) I am trying to print a black and white photographic image using my epson printer. I have been told that by adjusting the screen option in print preview it can convert my black and white photograph into a version that has finely spaced white dots in the black / grey areas. I have tried completely different ways of doing this (eg. the mezzotint effect) but this doesn't have the desired effect. The fine dots are needed so that one it is transferred to a metal plate and etched the ink will hold in these tiny dots (or the spaces between them).
Anyone have an idea how the screen option works? I have been told it may be totally dependent on the type of printer I have. The following link explains the process and mentions they use an inkjet printer.

Even if you can't help me please can anyone explain what the screen option does as I have experimented with it and it does seem to add fine dots of sorts to the image, although very fine dots which I may be confusing with the grain of the paper.

When Print screen comes up, I click on print, but the option for selection is not bold. I cannot access it to print a selection that I have highlighted.What am I doing wrong? The only options available to me are "all" and "pages". In order to print I must send an e-mail to another server and then print the selection from there. This a very convoluted way of printing. There must be something easier in Firefox.

How to make a Screen Optional

Iam working on eCATT using SAP GUI 640 and ECC500.
I have to record a TRansaction FB10.
when i start recording after i login for the first time in a day,it opens first screen of transaction FB10.but when i run the script for the second time it will not open the first screen of the transaction but goes to the second screen of the Transaction.which leads my script fail because it will search for the first screen.
So, is there any posibility to make the screen optional or any solution for the above issue.
I would appreciate if you guys could share your thoughts .

Hi Rajender,
Double click on the SAPGUI and expand the processed screen and you can see Something like "<b>Active 'X'</b>"
Instead of that 'X' make it 'O' (its O in alphabets not Zero).
But there is a catch here, in many situations you cannot make the first sapgui as optional, coz generally your first SAPGUI has the Reset Flag is set to 'X', if you make it optional, the session is not reset with your transaction.
In such cases, try opening a dummy transaction in the beginning and then proceed with your transaction FB10.
Like open SM30 (initially, do no operations here) and then immediately Give ur Transaction id in the Command Field.

MacBook Pro overheating when I close the screen

I have a Macbook Pro one year from now.
I used it without problems until a couple of weeks that when I closed the screen (not shut down) and I plugged to electricity, the mbp becomes extremely hot.
Any suggestions how to solve the issue?

OK. Open Activity Monitor and select "All Processes" at the top and "CPU" on the bottom bar. Then look through the CPU column and see if you can find some process--perhaps a hung up printer process--using more than 50%--maybe even 100%--of the CPU. These hung up processes, if you have one, can generate a lot of heat.
Also, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test, just to be sure that the fans and the thermal sensors are functioning properly. If you get any error codes, please post back with them.

IBook coming on, but can barely see the screen!

Okay, so if I dont look closely, the screen looks like its not on, but if i turn it at the right angle......the wallpaper, desktop, etc, is in fact working!!!! is it my backlight???? Please help!!
I've restarted it several times and still no luck...i reset the PMU and that didnt work....

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried turning up the brightness with the F2 key?
Have you checked the Brightness slider in System Preferences > Display Preferences?
(Sometimes it's the simplest things.)
Do you still have your OS 9 installation? If so, try going to System Preferences > Startup Disk, select your OS 9 startup volume and restart in OS 9. Do you have the same problem in OS 9? If so, it is almost certainly a hardware issue.

Closing the display kicks me off line

i have a brand new macbook and everytime i close the display or if my screen saver kicks in i get kicked off of aim. is there a way to prevent this from happening?

Closing the screen/lid forces the MacBook into sleep mode (ie. connections are also lost).
1. I suggest closing the lid as far as possible without having the MacBook go to sleep.
2. Or attach a mouse, close the lid and press a mouse key to wake it up with the lid closed.
3. Close lid, wait until sleep, open lid somewhat, try and press a key on the keyboard, close lid again.
