Cloud based backups

I was just told that Carbonite is useless for macs. I don't use Time maching because you need an external drive and I use a laptop becuase I am all over the place and can't lug an external drive all around with me. Any suggestions on cloud based backups?

    Hi,
I would like to back up some of my files to the cloud, so I don't have everything here at my house.  I get it about redundancy being key to back up, but think it wise to have some off site backup, too, and that seems harder to do with external drives.  (I work at home in the country, not so close to friends.)
I have recently tried Zipcloud and been very frustrated for a number of reasons, a primary one being their ridiculous system of handling support tickets.  They do not carry a thread forward; each time there is a new responder who has no history of the issue and previous replies.  (It has been maddening to have to repeat and repeat!)  their interface does not show backed up files.  In order to delete many gigs of files I probably shouldn't have chosen for back up in the first place, I have to do it file by file by file to free up the space; there is no option to delete folders and on and on and on.
Also, I am getting that one can't do a complete back up ofHD and expect a complete system restore as one might do from a Time MAchine backup (which I have learned the hard way is not always possible if there is corruption expected).
    1. What backup services for MAC would you recommend and why?  (I have looked for reviews online, but have not found them that helpful, having found often reviewers have affiliations that bias their reviews.  No one mentioned some of the issue I have found with Zipcloud for example.
Note: I have also found, although Zipcloud claims this not to be so, that their app installed on my computer slows computer performance significantly.  Is this to be expected with online backup?
    2.  What files would you recommend baking-up?  I would appreciate if you could offer a little rationale for which files you are naming.
Thank you.  So good to have this support.

I realize that I do not understand the difference between a clone and a TM backup.
Some advantages of a cloned hard drive:
If you ever have a HD crash, there is NOTHING quicker to get back up and running 100% than a HD clone.   You can boot from same in mere seconds, or install it and remove the dead HD in roughly 20 mins.,....nothing to install, nothing to adjust,....and all data on your dead HD is cloned and ready to go on the clone
If you do an option key startup at boot you can directly boot to your cloned drive externally and operate from same like normal.
Sandboxing: With the help of the Cloned Drive, you can perform sandboxing, or the testing of new software, their updates and applications before they are installed on your Mac system. Moreover, if there are issues with the system, you can troubleshoot them by booting off the Clone. Many people test new APPS or experiment with a secondary clone and never worry about a failure or serious issue since the internal HD is untouched and the secondary clone can be wiped afterwards if any major issue occurs in testing. This is an invaluable tool in many instances.
If you sell you computer for purchase of a new one, you can take the clone you have on hand and install same or clone it to the new internal drive of your new Mac.
As it turns out one of the huge positive benefits of a clone is that people were seeing faster HD speeds; with APPS booting up from the clone than they had seen with the internal HD. The cloning applications in cloning the drive defragments the data to the clone and remove the “holes” in the cloning process.
With a small portable HD clone you can take your ‘computer’ anywhere to most any other current Mac and boot from your HD clone and have your entire system and its data immediately there for use. In case one is across the world and their macbook gets stolen, or damaged, with another Mac you can be up and 100% in the time it takes to boot to the new or borrowed Mac!
You can clone from your external clone to the internal HD/SSD in case of corruption.
The best thing that can be said, ideally, when your HD crashes with all its data is “so what, I’ve got a clone right here” and you can return to normal operation within seconds (by booting from the clone) or minutes (by swapping drives).
In separating out your system hub (OS) and your data hub, and storing them separately, is if you make only periodic clones (every month or so), and have a HD crash, the worst case outcome is that what is lost on your clone are some bookmarks and preferences since your data hub containing your vital files is constantly archived separately as it should be.
Time Machine is a system backup, not a data archive
Important data you “don’t dare lose” should not be considered ultimately safe, or ideally stored (at the very least not as sole copy of same) on your Time Machine backup. Hourly and daily fluctuations of your system OS, applications, and software updates is the perfect focus for the simple user to conduct ‘click it and forget it’ backups of the entire system and files on the Macbook HD.
Time machine however is not an idealized archive storage option, nor permanent in the sense in that the data stored to TM is a ‘revolving door’ that expands and changes as it reflects changes on your computers HD.  Time machine is an entry-level backup option that is very simple to use and operate, but it is not a serious storage option professionals with priceless data rely on other than as an emergency backup of their system hub (OS and related APPS installed).
Bootable clones are the choice of professionals and others in that Time Machine cannot be booted from and requires a working HD to retrieve data from (meaning another computer). Your vital data needs to be and should be ‘frozen’ on some form of media storage, either in a clone, as an archived HD containing important files, or on DVD blank archival media.
A file that is backed up to Time Machine is unsafe in that if that file is deleted off the computer by accident or lost otherwise, that file will likewise vanish from Time Machine as it reflects changes on the internal computer HD/SSD.
Use a Time Machine,....but have "dont dare lose ever"  data stored on autonomous HD in your safe etc,
...and ESPECIALLY important data burned onto Professional Archival DVD
    Hard Drives
Given the second law of thermodynamics, any and all current mfg. HD will, under perfect storage conditions tend themselves to ferromagnetic depolarization and a point will be reached, even if the HD mechanism is perfect, that the ferromagnetic read/write surface of the platter inside the HD will entropy to the point of no return for data extraction.
HD life varies, but barring mechanical failure, 3-8 years typically.

  • Iphoto cloud based backup

I am currently looking for a solution to backup my growing iphoto libary on the web.  It would be nice to be able to view the photos on the web as well.
So far I have considered using:
-flickr to upload all of my iphotos events
-google picasa with and app called Phoshare to export symlinks to the photos which would then be uploaded to picasa. http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/picasa/QE1hlVBMNqE/Mta22IEITAcJ
Has anyone had any experience with these soliutions or know of any other solutions?
    Thanks,
    -Matt

Thanks Leonie, I agree purchasing external hardrives is the way to go to have a backup.  My problem now is I currently have a new macbook and the solid state hard drive is only 250gb.  So I am looking for a way to "archive" my older iphoto events but still have them accessable via the web.
I will check out Roger Wilmut's site as well!
    Thanks,

  • Will I really need a new Mac or will all iphone, iPad updates be cloud based?

Our iMac is almost 6 years old and cannot be upgraded to Lion. I will need to somehow update our iPads and iPhones with a new Mac...or will I? I figure I have 4-8 months with w Leopard before my update days are over with my iMac....then what? We almost never use our computer anymore...Just about every thing  we need to do we can do on our iPad/iPhone. I am under the impression that "Soon....?" all update will be cloud based. Since everything will be stored in the cloud, why will I need a huge hard drive or an external HD other than to keep an emergency backup in the event of a catastrophic cloud failure. I guess my main concern is future updates with our iPhone/iPads.   Thanks, Bill

Late 2006 - Early 2007 all Macs became Lion compatible (Core2Duo and Xeon processors with 2 GB of RAM is what is needed).    As for Cloud based updates, it is anyone's guess. Apple hasn't yet announced one way or another if your fear is going to happen.  Instead of worrying about that, try to make do with what you have, until you must upgrade to Lion because of some application compatibility, and then make sure all of your applications are Lion compatible before upgrading:
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
So while you may not a new Mac, it will need to be newer than the Mac you originally got if it comes to be.  Don't let updates be the driving force of whether you get Lion.  Unlike Windows many people can stick with older copies of Mac OS X, and even Mac OS without worrying too much about security as long as they don't use Peer2Peer software, and only get attachments from people they trust.

  • Does iCloud function as an cloud iPhoto backup?

I am interested in using iCloud as a cloud based back up for my photo/video library.  Does iCloud function in this capacity (I realize I will outstrip the 5GB limit and need to purchase more data space) or does it merely function to wirelessly push data/last 1000 photos etc in between my iPhone/iPad/mac?  Also, if this backup functionality is a reality, if our original data is damaged (fire to hard-drives etc) are the photo/video retrievable from the cloud in the original data size? Thanks.

PhotoStream is purely a conduit for copying photos taken by or added to one device onto the others: photos are held for only 30 days on the server and they are not accessible there, only on the devices.
There is no backup facility for your Mac or file storage facility on iCloud. These pages examine alternatives for file storage and photo gallery respectively (they are written for people moving from MobileMe but the essential information is the same):

  • SSO with Hybrid Cloud-Based Deployments

    Hi
I´m wondering, how SSO works with Hybrid Cloud-Based Deployments.
I want to use Jabber for Windows with WebEx Connect and Unified Communications integration with Cisco WebEx.
    Questions:
How can I configure Jabber for Windows to use SSO with WebEx Connect after Client-Installation?
I´ve read, that SSO username with WebEx Connect will be [email protected] Correct?
I´ve read, that I have to create a jabber-config.xml with a follows to enforce Jabber for Windows to use the Webex-Connect login credentials also for Phone Services. Correct?
    <CUCM>     <PhoneService_UseCredentialsFrom>presence</PhoneService_UseCredentialsFrom>   </CUCM>
If this is correct, Jabber for Windows will use [email protected] to authenticate with CUCM, but CUCM would need only the username without the domain. From my point of view, Jabber for Windows will not be able to authenticate with CUCM for Phone Services.
    Any thoughts?
    thank you
    Tino

    Hi Maqsood
Thanks for your info. I´ve tested the "PhoneService_UseCredentialsFrom" attribute in my hybrid deployment and it seems, that it effects the jabber also in this scenario: the credentials form in the jabber options menu are not displayed.
My understanding of the admin guide is, that it should work:
    Authentication in Hybrid Cloud-Based Deployments
If the client authentication credentials are the same as the voicemail service credentials on Cisco Unity Connection, you can specify the VoicemailService_UseCredentialsFrom parameter in the Cisco Jabber for Windowsconfiguration file. This parameter uses the client authentication credentials to access voicemail services. As a result, Cisco Jabber for Windows users do not need to enter their credentials for voicemail services in the client.
You should ensure that the sign in credentials and voicemail service credentials are the same for the Cisco Jabber for Windows users. If you set this parameter, the Voicemail section is not available on the Phone accounts tab in the Options window.
    thanks,
    Tino

  • How do I create a UDL for a Cloud-based Database like Amazon ?

I have been using UDL connections to SQL Server without any issues.
I was just asked to look in to Cloud-based databases, but I'm not sure ho to create a connection to the databases once they have been created.
Has anyone done anything like this?
If so, do you have an example the you can share?
    Keith

Unless the cloud based database you are interested in does provide an ODBC and/or OLE/ADO driver there is no way to connect to this database through the LabVIEW Database Toolkit or any other of the Database Toolkits out there that can use an UDL.
However if you talk specifically about a service like Amazon RDS then this is based on a database engine of MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle SQL or PostgreSQL depending what the client chose when setting up the DB in the Amazon cloud and as such you simply would have to use the according database driver and get the correct internet address to connect to. What address that would need to be should be most likely visible in the setup console program or as Amazon calls it the AWS Management Console.

  • HP Enterprise - Use Cloud-based HP Online Help to Troubleshoot Printing

HP LaserJet Enterprise printers and HP Officejet Enterprise printers have cloud-based Online Help available to troubleshoot printing issues. HP Online Help users can scan a QR code on the printer display using a mobile phone or tablet, or click an error-specific link in the Event Log of the Embedded Web Server, to automatically retrieve the most relevant and up-to-date information or video to help resolve the issue at the control panel.

    Hi @Sunshyn2005
I timed-out waiting for advice, and contacted HP Support, who helped me get the printer back on the air.  While we didn't manage to root-cause it, in the course of trying various things, the tech disabled Norton 360's firewall, which then allowed connecting to the printer, and restoring print service, which remains up after re-enabling the firewall.
The timing of the disconnection doesn't neatly corellate with any Windows updates.  My own theory is that it was caused by a 360 update, but am unable to find a smoking gun, since 360 doesn't provide update history.  The exact root-cause remains a mystery, but at least provides another thing for folks to try should they find themselves in similar straits.
I really appreciated your hint that a Windows update might be the root cause, and your pointing out how to review the history and back-out updates: this morning, I found that Windows had installed a batch of updates overnight, and found that no browsers worked.  Using your advice, I rolled back the update, restoring browsing.
    Thanks,

  • How do I edit my Android Apps Code in dreamweaver? As well I can't find any of the App options that I keep hearing about in my cloud based Dreamweaver.....

I already have an app that I paid someone to make but I needed to make some changes to the code and wanted to do it in Dreamweaver. How is it best to load my code into Dreamweaver, navigate through it, and find the code I need to change? As well my version of Dreamweaver ( It the new Cloud based ) doesn't have any of the App features. Do I need to load it differently or something?

It really depends on how the app was developed and loaded.  DW can help with web interfaces and some parts of the app development, but depending on the complexity and language of the app you may need additional tools like Xcode (Apple) in order to modify the app.

  • Firefox requires clicking "Allow" to view one screen in cloud-based database

When using Firefox (but not Windows) in a cloud-based database (SaaS) for facility scheduling, one particular screen (in a series of screens needed for each reservation) will not load until I click the "Allow" button every time. This is enough of a nuisance that I want to tell Firefox to trust everything on the url, my.serviceu.com/. I'd like to know how to do this. I only have this problem when using the system on Firefox, not MS Explorer, but the system is written to run best on Firefox.

    Do you mean this?
*Firefox > Options/Preferences > Advanced > General Accessibility [ ] "Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page"
The setting in "Options > Advanced > General" is meant as an accessibility feature, as you can see by the label of that section, so that people with disabilities or people who use screen readers do not get confused and is not meant as a safety protection to stop redirecting.

  • Cloud based iTunes?

Best to start out explaining the situation...LOL.  I travel full time for work, so almost always gone someplace, in a hotel in the evenings with wifi.  I have a quite large and hard to manage iTunes library (over 80k songs) that I maintain on my laptop (Macbook Pro).  My son uses the same music on a different hard drive, with his own library file.  I add music quite often.  This has presented a unique situation trying to keep my sons music updated.  We can easily update his drive to add the new music, but now, the program we've used, ITLU, doesn't seem to work anymore.  Is there a cloud based option for us?  I'm talking about a drive I have on the home network that I can link to, as a network drive, when I am traveling?  Any other reasonable suggestions would be welcome.

Since Office 365 is a Microsoft product and not an Apple product, it doubtful you'll get an answer here. Suggest you post in a M$ Office 365 forum, like this one http://support.microsoft.com/ph/15834/en  Google for others.

Have you tried resetting your iPad? You will not lose any data. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Cloud based computing for beginners?

The first thing you need to figure out is WHICH cloud skill set are they looking for?  Do they want you to know how to use public cloud offerings like Amazon, Azure and Rackspace?  If so, make an account and start working with them, it's that easy.  There is no way to learn except to do it.
If they are looking for building and supporting cloud computing itself, then you do the same thing that you do with any field.... download the software and build yourself a lab at home.  OpenStack is far and away the dominant cloud platform and it is completely free.  You can do cloud computing at home pretty easily to get yourself started.
Cloud isn't a skill on its own.  That's like says "computers" as a skill.  What specific skill set are they seeking?

This link should introduce you to basics and then acquiring some knowledge, you should contact your local CLOUD SOLUTIONS SMBs to find out more about what they are offering, what they mean by cloud based app solutions, pricing ideas, hosting, reliability & stability, cost effectiveness comparing to your local hosted server, security of your hosted data. Before all that, just go through the basics and then get some consultation as practical knowledge and experiences are better than theories over the internet everywhere.

  • Cloud based network mapping

Spicy Hot mess. -  I would Say no.

I'm sure this question falls within the realm of science fiction, but just in case there is something I wasn't aware of Ill ask anyway.
Is there a piece of software or cloud based solution that could map my entire network that does not require it to be installed on my server?
The short story is, we, that is me and my team do not manage our servers. However we are constantly asked to find workstations on our network based on IP or even MAC's.
Don't ask, its a political ghetto, hot mess.
Meanwhile we still need to do our jobs.
I've been searching, but unsurprisingly I don't think anything like this exist.
