  • Cloud Computing - Oracle dba

    Hi Experts,
kindly let me know what is cloud computing and what role can a Oracle dba have in this profile ?
    Regards,
    Chandra.

At the moment, nothing since this concept is yet to be made more polished and refined. The only cloud thingy that I am aware of related to oracle db is the option to go for Amazon's cloud service to put up the backups. I guess it would be better to choose the policy of wait and watch and see what the next release would say and do about cloud computing.

  • Anyone help to provide some use cases of Oracle Cloud Computing?

    Hi.
Anyone help to provide some use cases of Oracle Cloud Computing?
    PaaS is preferred.
    Thanks.

    - small companies can deploy Oracle server as and when needed. Unlike hosting provider, you are paying for resources when you use
    - Vendors can demo their database applications from anywhere without requiring hardware
    - big companies can provision capacity on-demand (e.g. holiday season)
These are only few use cases, others might have more.

  • Oracle Cloud Computing business drivers

    Hi Experts,
Can anybody share some inputs on Oracle Cloud Computing business drivers ?
    Thanks,
    Vijaya

    Hi,
At the highlevel , the main business drives for cloud computing are:-
1- Speed time to production / market by deploying and rollout applications very fast compare to the traditional way of building in-house applications which takes longer.
2- Reduce the IT Administration overhead involved with managing many sub-systems with in premises using many different skills and multiple vendors (High OPEX)

  • Online survey on cloud computing

    Hello everyone
I am doing a research on cloud computing aiming to identify what benefits have been realized and what possible challenges are introduced using different cloud service models i.e. Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service
(PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).
I am, therefore, looking for survey participants who have any experience with IaaS, PaaS, SaaS adoption or use in their organizations.
It takes approximately 20 minutes to complete the survey and it can be accessed on http://freeonlinesurveys.com/s.asp?sid=4th678j97h4u0ux507858
The survey questionnaire has 19 questions in total, which are distributed across 4 parts. First part includes general questions about your organization. Second part gathers information related to cloud adoption. Third part questions about
challenges, benefits and adoption motivators. This part is longer than others, and therefore not relevant questions can be deselected by N/A option. And finally, fourth part has some questions about your professional background.
The information collected through this survey will be used for research purposes only. All your private information which you may provide will be kept in strict confidence.
I sincerely hope that you will consider participating in this survey.
    All the best
    Ingrida

    Syed,
What do you mean by "how to use cloud computing for installing and maintaining Oracle Apps and PS (Enterprise application)"? Please elaborate more.
Oracle Apps installation manual can be found at:

  • Cloud Computing Decrease Job Opportunity

    Hi Guru's,
I have a query about Cloud Computing now everyone talking about the same, that from 2014 companies start thinking about the same. So it means DBA jobs are less in market
So What need to do to cope up with this possibility.
    Kindly guide over this.

    >
    Hi Vikas,
So in this scenario what you suggest to do wheather we need to update
skills on Oracle or we need to go with cloud or what exactly the path need to followCloud = Shroud! ;)
At the end of the day, the term "cloud" is just a fancy term for network combined with
    data consolidation.
The data will have to sitting in a database somewhere.
The only thing "cloud" means is that instead of the data sitting in a smelly server-room
in the basement of your building - it will be in a data center in New York, Dublin, Bangalore
or <insert city of your choice>, but DBA's will still be required.
Think of the cloud as being the new Sysadmins (again consoliated).
Of course it is a good idea for the DBA to have some clue as to the network
capacity &c., but it's not mission critical for the DBA - just as Sysadmins can see
databases merely as another consumer of network resources.
A good Sysadmin will have a good knowledge
of the systems he's working on, but it's not critical. In the old days, maybe
(as has frequently happened) the Sysadmin was the DBA and vice-versa.
The IT workspace is becoming increasinly consolidated, but you needn't worry
about running out of DBA jobs any time soon.
    Again, IMHO.

Whats books are the betters to learn about Cloud Computing?

    Hi,
Glad to see you want to come aboard the cloud computing ship
If you didn't read it already, I would start with the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_computing
This pdf is also very good and it exlpains Oracle's cloud computing strategy: http://www.oracle.com/us/technologies/cloud/oracle-cloud-computing-wp-076373.pdf
You can also take a look at the product specific ebooks available on https://cloud.oracle.com/ , for example https://cloud.oracle.com/_downloads/eBook_Platform_Java_File/Oracle_Java_Cloud_Service.pdf
There are a lot of other resources, but these should get you up and running in no time.
    Good luck!

    Hi oracle.An
Coherence can be used in a "Cloud". You could run you Coherence cluster in the cloud or you could run your client applications in the cloud, or both. Obviously with the dynamic nature of clouds you need to do things a bit differently when it comes to configuration as you cannot have fixed IP addresses for things. I think a few people have experimented with running Coherence on clouds and I have had discussions with people about how you could run Coherence "on demand" on an internal cloud so I would think Coherence can belong in the Cloud space if that is how you want to say it.

  • EM12c - Cloud Computing possible mit VMWare ?

    Hey
is the Cloud Computing only possible with Oracle VM Server or can it be used with VMWare Server ?
    thanks

You may be able to get EM 12c to run on VMware using a supported OS version. However, here is a statement from Support note 249212.1:
"Oracle has not certified any of its products on VMware virtualized environments. Oracle Support will assist customers running Oracle products on VMware in the following manner: Oracle will only provide support for issues that either are known to occur on the native OS, or can be demonstrated not to be as a result of running on VMware."

  • Install Oracle 9i client on a computer with Oracle 10g Client

    Hello all!!
I'm using a computer with Oracle 10g client, and I access two databases. One server has Oracle 10g server, and the other server has Oracle 9i server.
I want to install 9i client, to have it also in my computer. I haver read that I just have to install it in a different ORACLE_HOME, but I have a doubt.
If I install 9i client, would I be able to use the utilities, (exp, expddp, sqlldr) of both versions, or which version will be used in the command line for the utilities.
    Thanks a lot!!!

To start with, Home Selector is a "9i thing" (and older), in 10g there's the OUI -> Installed Products... -> Environment tab instead.
About the 9i dbca with other Oracle products installed. If you use launch.exe to start via dbca start menu shortcut, it uses ora92\assistants\dbca as working directory ("start from"). So when not looking for "numbered dlls" like oracore9.dll, a later/different version will be loaded if earlier in path, since loading goes through jre directories, ora92\assistants\dbca, then the dir's from path variable. From there it may start to link in libraries from different homes (on my laptop, "launch.exe dbca" uses files from 2 additional home paths!)
But, if you instead use dbca.bat started from ora92\bin, it will look in the right directories first and there's no dll mess-up. (But only when using the correct cwd!)
Plain and simple: stay very far away from multiple-general-home installs. It is possible to install allright, in different homes and all very nicely, but there will be pain when you decide to use the stuff (perhaps with sql*plus as the only exception, but I've run into bugs with that too).
