Cloud versus iCloud ?

hi all, i am still getting to grips with the new updates bestowed upon us all recently, for a while now i have had "CLOUD" this has an icon on the task bar at the top of the screen, where i can simply drag and drop stuff onto the icon and immediately goes on my Cloud.
I was hoping that iCloud was going to be about the same !, or am i missing something (i often do LOL), it would make iCloud far more usefull and i am very surprised it isnt already implemented, or is this something i could suggest.

The app that you have downloaded from the MAS has nothing to do with the iCloud service that Apple will introduce.

  • "Documents in the Cloud" vs iCloud---lost docs

I put in a new SSD and upgraded my MBP to Yosemite. All good---except some docs I had written using Text Editor are now somehow just gone. Evidently these were saved to Documents in the Cloud, which is now just gone...??
What has Apple done with my docs that were saved in Mountain Lion to (what it called anyway) the Cloud?
In Snow Leopard, my last OS, my Text Edit offered an option to save and open docs either to/from On This Mac, or onto Cloud. Some I had saved to Cloud, they are now in some unknown domain of cyberspace, or annihilated.
Apple says iCloud Drive now doesn't offer saving of text docs written in Text Edit. The Text Edit app used to offer saving/opening docs from what it called "Cloud"---evidently that was Apple's Documents in the Cloud, which is now deprecated---?
Apple told me that "the docs might be saved in Pages format" on iCloud Drive, but I thought I would inquire here if anyone had any experience with this, it looks like once you upgrade to iCloud Drive there's no going back, so I'm afraid to upgrade and then find the docs still aren't there and have been annihilated.
How to find my previous Documents in the Cloud folder, now that I'm on Yosemite with a new hard drive?  I tried searching the old hard drive for .txt docs, it doesn't seem to see them. I have not searched Time Machine, but if I can't find the .txt files on the old hard drive, how would I find them in Time Machine?
I was a fool not to save the Documents in the Cloud docs separately---hoping someone can help me figure out if they still exist.

Documents stored in iWork (e.g. Pages docs) on icloud also have a copy stored locally.  When you restored from a TM backup, you got back the old iwork files.  Whether viewing the older files has put those copies in icloud, in place of the new ones, I'm not sure.  But if you log into icloud.com and go to the iwork page, you'll find those files there.  You can then download them to the mac.  Whether they will be the recent, new versions or the old versions, I don't know.

  • Cloud vs. iCloud?

I downloaded an app yesterday on impulse and now i'm thinking it's an unrelated app to the Apple iCloud since it's not supposed to be released until the fall. It's just called "Cloud" and Apple is not the developer. Anyone know? If it's not the Apple app, then i'm going to delete it to avoid confusion for me when iCloud is released.
    any help is appreciated!
    thanks in advance!

  • Amazon cloud and iCloud

    Hi
I have just bought a new macbook.  Logged in to find a few files I created on icloud using my ipad.
Are these files physically on both my mac and pad and also the cloud?
    Amazon cloud drive.
Have 10 gig of photos on this drive, that I can see on my iphone and also if I take a photo get uploaded to this drive.
If I download the amazon app for mac, I understand that it will create a cloud drive on my mac.  In here, I will find the pictures etc.
Again, will these be downloaded onto my mac, so that they are in both places?
If I create a file on my mac and its in the my documents folder - will this be stored on icloud or do I have to move it somewhere for this to happen?
Sorry to sound like a dope...
    Thanks

You must save files to iCloud if that is where you want them, moving them from folder to folder will still store them on your Mac.
Only certain applications can save to iCloud, what do you use?

  • Cloud Versus Local file storage

I ahve seen little specific discussion about file storage.  I know there is 2GB free but I assume that if I switch from CS6 and LR4 to the CC I can continue to store everything locally?

I assume that if I switch from CS6 and LR4 to the CC I can continue to store everything locally?
    Yes, no different to normal.
Cloud software works the same as Creative Suites. Software installs locally, runs locally and files are saved locally. Only the Cloud license itself is Cloud based.
Storing files in the Cloud as a Cloud member is a free optional extra.

  • "iCloud" versus "iCloud Drive"-difference?

I don’t see why we should “upgrade” (as Apple calls it) to “iCloud Drive”. Already, our MBPs and iOS devices are set up to share appropriately (documents, pix, Safari stuff, Contacts...and on, and on) using “iCloud”. Been doing it for quite awhile. Same free storage limit as is advertised with “iCloud Drive”, which is more than sufficient for us.
N.b., mi esposa syncs Contacts, Mail, Calendar, and Bookmarks through a Gmail account, while I do through iCloud—thus, we may maintain separate sets.
What the heck, if anything, would an “upgrade” to “iCloud Drive” gain us?

It allows documents created in one app to be opened in another compatible app.  There aren't many apps supporting iCloud Drive right now, but that will change.  Read here: http://www.imore.com/icloud-drive-clearing-up-confusion.

  • .mac versus iCloud

I have read that people have problem to keep their .mac  when going to icloud. Is that  a problem to do that?

Your @mac.com address and the @me.com version will both be transferred to iCloud when you migrate and function as before.
Some people have been complaining that they are having problems with the @mac.com version while the @me.com version works OK, but I think this is a server glitch, which hopefully will get sorted out, rather than any deliberate decision.

  • Me versus iCloud?

    Hi
What's the value of this should I keep and use both ? Ignore new ? Replace old ..... Help

    There is no difference.
Apple renamed their service from MobileMe to iCloud, so it is logical to change the email address to match.
You can ignore the new address if it is not required, your previous @me email will continue to function.

  • ITunes versus iCloud

Suite à un bug lors de l'installation de Montain lion et la réinitialisation de mon Mac j'ai perdu toutes mes chansons itunes. Est-ce possible de les récupérer grâce à icloud ou je dois tout racheter ?

Your iCloud did change since your iCloud and your Apple ID are one in the same. However, you didn't delete the iCloud account from your device before you changed the ID, so that is why you are running into this issue. Here's what you need to do:
    1.     Go to Manage your Apple ID and sign on with your current Apple ID and password. This is temporary - do NOT verify it, do NOT change the password: Apple - My Apple ID
    2.     Go to Settings>iCloud on your device and scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap on Delete Account. Type in your current Apple ID password when asked, then follow the prompts to delete the old account
    3.     Go back to Manage your Apple ID and sign on with the old email address and your current password, and EDIT the Apple ID back to the new email address. You may have to verify it again
    4.     Go back to Settings>iCloud and sign on with your new ID
    Cheers,

  • Keychain versus iCloud Keychain

I am looking for an explanation of the difference between my local keychain and iCloud keychain.  And since iCloud is secured with a complex pass phrase, isn't it inherently safer than my local keychain?

Your local keychain is as secure as your keychain password. By default, the keychain password is the same as your login password. You can change it, but you'll have to unlock it separately when you log in.
Your local keychain is stored on your Mac and is only available to you while logged into your account on your Mac.
The iCloud keychain is stored on Apple's servers and is shared among all of your devices.

  • Simple question:  I want to use iCloud as a back up disk for my documents folder.  How can I do this?  If I cannot do this, why am I paying for access to "the cloud?"

Simple question:  I want to use iCloud as a back up disk for my documents folder.  How can I do this?  If I cannot do this, why am I paying for access to "the cloud?"

iCloud does not provide general file storage or backup, so you cannot back up your Documents folder using it. You will need to find a third-party alternative - this page examines some options (some are free):

iCloud at basic level, with 5GB is storage, is free: you only pay anything if you want to increase the storage space.

  • I just set up my icloud. how do I transfer pictures from my iphone to cloud

I just set up my icloud. how do I transfer pictures from my iphone to cloud? icloud back up is on...everything else is getting backed up except my pictures

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    If you mean photo stream:
Once it's set up, any new photos you take will be added to photo stream.
Is there a particular area you are having a problem with.

  • Control what goes to cloud

where can I control what goes to the cloud versus Apple "assisting" me?

You can set data types in System Preferences>Cloud - Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Documents, Safari Bookmarks, Notes, Photo Stream. With Documents (you can choose which documents to save to iCloud though the deafult will be Cloud). With Calendars and Contacts you can save 'On My Mac' (which won't sync) or to Cloud. Otherwise it's all or nothing within a data type.

  • I have two apple ids somehow, probably from two mobile and two computers - how do I merge them into one account so they all work with iCloud?

Somewhere, somehow, between two mobile and two macs, I ended up with two apple ids. I figured that this was the root of my problem to syncing. So, I am syncing Mail, Contacts, etc through the one account that I bought storage on this year in iCloud. I want to merge the two accounts, since many of my apps were purchased with my other id. Apparently, Keynote will not merge files since the app was bought with the second id, not the id I am using for icloud.
What to do??? I read, in the forums, that I am definitely not alone. I always had the id I used for the Apple Store to buy iTunes items, and then apps. The other id, that I am using for iCloud was based on my iDisk id, and apparently I set up as a separate account. The much failed iDisk account appears to be the one that I wish I never got involved with. Should I feel the same way about iCloud. If I cannot merge the two APPLE accounts from the same person (ME!!!), then many dropbox really is the answer for my file sharing needs.
    Please help me decide.

To begin with, I would like to try to explain Apple's confusing nomenclature in regard to iCloud.
Apple have called the whole cloud thing iCloud, there are a number of features under the iCloud umbrella, some of which require their own login. iTunes is one of these, another is what Apple have unfortunately also called iCloud too.
You can use the same Apple ID (account) to login to both iCloud and iTunes, but you don't need to and often users will login to each service using a different ID.
The part that you need to remember is that the services available when you log into iCloud are completely different and unrelated to those when you log in to iTunes. Your iCloud login enables mail, contacts, calendars, find my phone, Back to My Mac, Documents & Data sharing and photostream, it does not affect any of your iTunes services.
To avoid confusion when discussing your problem, when I mention iCloud, I am referring to the services under the iCloud login, Whereas I will refer to the whole cloud thing as The Cloud.
To go back to your question; you cannot merge accounts, but perhaps using one account for iCloud and the other for iTunes will resolve the majority of the reasons you needed to merge to begin with.
