Clunking noise then freeze up. Upon restart there is a boot disk error.

My machine is a Slimline s3300z. Recently it has started to crash. There will be a clunking noise---possibly the hard drive? Then a reboot is required (power down/up). If I do not interceed during this process a black screen"Boot Disk Failure" message appears. If I use the ESC key to use the boot menu I can reboot successfully. This has happened probably six times in the last two days. Thanks.

You should still be able to burn your recovery discs using HP Recovery Manager in your start menu programs.

  • Satelite L300 wont boot on HD when there's no boot disk

The hard disk (HD) of my Satelite L300 crashed so I had to replace it and unfortunately I can't find my reco disks. I did manage to get my hand on a Vista OEM and managed to install that on the laptop with out any problem. However the laptop won't boot on the HD, even though if is the first boot device, but it will boot if there is a boot CD on the CD/DVD drive. The laptop won't boot on the HD but will read the CD and say "Press any key to boot from CD". I won't press a key and the laptop will process to boot from HD. I can use the laptop as normal.
On the BIOS setup, the first boot device is the HD then the CD drive. I checked the disk management and it said that the HD is active and healthy.
Is there a driver I have to install before VIsta? Where can I get it?

Something is wrong with the operating system on the hard drive. The hard drive is being seen correctly in the Bios and is the first boot device, but it is only booting from the CD, so there has to be something wrong with the installation of the operating system. I would try installing the operating system again and see if that fixes it. If not, try a different copy of the operating system or maybe a different operating system entirely. Like XP or Linex. If all of those fail, I would be concerned about the new hard drive. Was the new hard drive the same as the one it replaced? Some of the new hard drives spin faster and are much larger than the originals and may cause problems for the computer.

  • Clicking noise, then freezes

    Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has experienced a strange clicking from the left side of the iMac. It reminds me of the sound that the lid of a "Snapple" bottle makes when you press the top of it in and out. It clicks for a few seconds and then it freezes with the pinwheel. Is it the hard drive?

    inandoutofgrace wrote:
Those certainly could be symptoms of hard drive problems. You should immediately back up your HD, if you haven't already done so, and then launch Disk Utility (if you don't know where Disk Utility resides on your computer, use Spotlight to find it).
Once Disk Utility is running, select your HD. Then, check the S.M.A.R.T status (in the bottom part of the Disk Utility screen). If it does not say "Verified", you definitely have a HD problem. Next, click the "Verify Disk" button on the right side of the Disk Utility screen. If the verification routine fails, you have a HD problem.
Next steps will depend on how technical you are and whether or not you have access to any advanced HD management tools, such as Disk Warrior. You can always call Apple or go to an Apple Store for help. The most important thing for you to do at this point is to back up your HD before doing anything else.

Thanks for that, I appreciate it. I tried to back up on my lunch break, and I couldn't even get it to start up. I guess my next question is, If it has been regularly backing up on an external with Time Machine, am I going to be ok if I replace the iMac's hard drive or buy a new Mac? Can I restore everything that was on there? So many original photos, so much music, my stomach is in knots thinking about it.

  • TS1367 after a software update, my macbook pro was supposed to restart, since then, it doesn't restart & there is nothing i can do, any help please ?

    Hello,
after a sofware update, my macbook pro was supposed to restart,
since then the start up process begins & after few seconds, the mac goes back to off without starting, what's wrong ?
    thanks for any support,
    Amine

Let me add a little bit of details,
after the software update, I was asked to restart my laptop,
while doing it, I got a message error :"some files couldn't be updated".
Since then, everytime I start my macbook pro, I have the grey apple & screen, with a kind of updating bar (grey as well) at the bottom,
when the bar reaches approximately 30 to 40%, it disappears & the laptop swiths off.
Ihave tried to start on a safe mode, it doesn't work either,
    thanks

  • Menu and Bookmark toolbars are missing upon restart of Firefox, although they are recoverable by left clicking on remaining toolbar. V31 and Windows 7.

As question states, the menu toolbar and bookmark toolbars are missing upon restart.
Both are fully recoverable as customized, but then disappear again upon restart.

    I deleted the localstore.rdf.
But, I usually run Norton's Utilities 2012 "clean disk" upon closing down computer. The problem is something Norton is doing.
Firefox is storing my configuration/profile related to showing the two toolbars in some fashion (perhaps as a temp file), that Norton is erasing it.
Norton isn't deleting the customization/uniqueness of the toolbars.
Just that they don't show upon restarting.
There is probably a way for Firefox to store this "permanently".
Thanks for the help so far. The fix may not be something Firefox can do.

You can get there from here (booting normally); it just may take you a few steps to do it.
If the disk is almost full and the system won't boot then sometimes it will boot in Safe Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
Empty the trash after it boots.
Then for hints on how to free disk/SSD storage see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5872318?tstart=0
If the Safe Mode boot does not do the trick then you can install OS X on an external hard disk, boot from that, and then delete files.  You can also reach the disk via Target Mode.  A third option is to take it to an Apple store where they can do a network boot and help you remove some files.

  • Macbook Pro seems to be bricked by ML install. Upon restart it shows a progress bar which makes it to about 15%, and then the machine simply shuts off. Help?

Title pretty much says it all. Install seemed to be going fine, then upon restart it hit a gray screen with a progress bar for about 30 seconds. Once the progress bar makes it to about 15% the machine simply shut off. I tried turning the machine on again a few times, but each time I had the same issue. I then tried running the 10.8 recovery disk, but it just showed the gray spinning wheel for about 6 hours. Any ideas?

Something similar issue with me too. Intallation went fine. Then it started updating java once reboot it got stuck on grey screen. It wont boot at all. That spinning wheel keeps on going forever. :(

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Interclue fails to initalise upon restart from either shut down or back out of hibernation. Works when re-installed, but then fails every time.

Interclue fails to initialize upon restart from either shut down or back out of hibernation. Works when re-installed, but then fails every time. What would cause this situation. Never had problems with this add-on with Firefox until I downloaded Firefox 4.0. I can disable, re-start, enable,re-start, and it works fine. The same scenario holds true if I uninstall and then re-install add-on.

Just a guess, but I wonder if you have some application or process hanging up that's stopping it from shutting down? You might try closing each application individually and see if this helps.
    Good luck!

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Is there any way to make Firefox 4 display the web sites originally pinned in each tab upon restart of Firefox instead of the last web site viewed before ending Firefox?

After pinning a particular web site in each tab that I want to use in Firefox 4, the tabs work as expected for the initial session. However, after ending and later restarting Firefox 4, each tab starts with whatever page was displayed upon the previous close of Firefox. Upon restarting, I would like for Firefox to display the original pinned web page. Any suggestions?

You can set the prefs dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.* to false on the about:config page to disable the plugin-container process.
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npctrl.dll (Silverlight)
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npqtplugin.dll (QuickTime)
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npswf32.dll (Flash)
