Clunky movie

I'm having trouble with a .mov clip and quick time. I drag the movie out of the SD card into a movie folder. When I open it, it starts playing in quick time. When I plug in the SD card, iPhoto opens up too, same problem there. The movie just chugs along with stops and skips but the audio sounds fine, the video is intermittent. I'm using iMacG5, upgraded to Leopard.
The movie plays fine on the recorder (Zi6 Kodak). It also plays well in iMovie HD after I drag it over and it uploads, which takes a long time.
I'm hoping I just have a setting wrong somewhere. I'm frustrated, I've been trying for hours to figure this out.

QuickTime Player is designed to "drop" frames during playback if the machine can't "keep up" with the data rate of the file. This is what is happening on your machine.
The settings for your camera determine what file dimension and frame rate are used in the capture. The VGA setting would be the lowest data rate because it is the smallest dimension.
When you import your file into iMovie it can be converted to other QuickTime formats and it will play a bit better.

After a while, when I drag windows around, they "skip" and don't follow the usual smoth drag a window normally does.  I haven't been able to pin point this, but it happens no matter what application I am using.  If I restart cinnamon, it is back to normal.  I will provide any packages/versions you need.  Thank you.

  • How do you view tv or movie playlists created in iTunes on Apple TV?

I have iTunes 12.1.0.50 running on a Mac and a 2nd generation Apple TV with the latest software update on it.  However I am aware that Apple is not providing any more updates to the 2nd generation Apple TV.  I have some tv shows purchased on iTunes that I'd like to view in a playlist so that they can play back to back (kind of like it works on Netflix).  So, I created a smart playlist to contain all of The Walking Dead episodes in the right sequence and works very well when I play the movies on my Mac in iTunes.  However, I want to play this on my 2nd generation Apple TV without streaming directly from my iTunes on my Mac.  From searching on the web it seems like people have done this by setting the "Show Playlists" settings under "Audio Settings" from "Music only" to "All" and that after doing this the tv and video playlists are supposed to show up somewhere in Apple TV.  It doesn't appear to be working for me so my first question is "where" are these playlists supposed to show up e.g.(under "Movies" for movies and under "TV shows" for tv shows?  or is it in the Music playlists?)  I've looked everywhere and it doesn't appear to work.
I have even setup Home Sharing to view my playlists directly on my Mac from Apple TV and even then I don't see the playlists that contain tv shows or movies.  So one thought I had is that the latest iTunes update broke this feature for 2nd generation Apple TVs (since other people have mentioned using this feature).   I have also tried creating a normal playlist to add movies or tv shows to but I get a message from iTunes that it needs to download the whole movie from the cloud to put it in a playlist (which I find clunky).  I allowed the download to happen once just to see if the normal playlist would suddenly appear on Apple TV but it didn't show up either.  So, I'm not sure if I need to get the 3rd generation Apple TV to have this feature now or if those units are broke as well.....or if there is something else I need to do to get this to work.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Playlists AFAIK do not sync with the cloud.  The only way you could posibly do it is Home Sharing from iTunes if the playlists appear in Computers,

  • How can I accurately move the play bar back exactly to where I need to re-listen to?

I'm not sure if this an OS, app, software or hardware question, and couldn't find a better place to post. Hope it's OK. Apologies if not.
When i need to re-listen or re-watch a few seconds on an online school lecture using Safari or a song in iTunes to lean a part on my guitar, the play bar always moves much farther back past where & what I want to hear again - forcing me to watch or listen to unwanted material waiting until the play bar gets back to the part I want. This extra time really adds up!.
Is it possible to move the play bar back (or forward) to the exact place I want?
If the file is on my computer, I open it in recording/editing software, which allows pinpoint accuracy. If the file is online only, I record it to my computer so I can open in my recording app. All needlessly time consuming.
But i cant do this on my iPad or iPhone and a finger on a touch screen trying to move a play bar is much worse than using a mouse or trackpad on a computer.
Can I move the play bar back or forward to exactly where I need it when using simple playback type software (like maybe using the arrow keys) with the same or close to placement accuracy of a recording/editing program?
    Thx!

    Ah.. yes I see now.
Yes I have my eye glued on the time but the slider doesn't work in sync with what I want.
Meaning. lets say I'm listening to a lecture audio and miss the last sentence, I hit pause at 1:14, and assume I need to review 5 seconds back and want to go to 1:09. I move the slider and it goes from 1:14 to 1:00. And I can't seem to get a smooth second by second relation going with the slider. Just jumps of time.
I can get back to 1:14 and when I try again it goes back to 1:00 which feels like there is a preconfigured minimum block of time that you can go back or move forward.
So what happens is I have to listen from 1:00. So instead of 5 seconds, with the time fidgetting with the slider, I've spent a bit of time. Multiply this over the course (no pun) of a 1.5 hr lecture and the time I spend with the lecture can easily double much of it wasted time, either trying to pinpoint the spot I want, or relistening to material that precedes the point in the track I want.
the only way I've gotten around this is to use a sound editor for audio tracks which has a fluid relationship between the slider and time so I can move back in time second by second.
I am at a loss for why the standard playback apps like QuickTime and Preview are so "clunky" and choppie and why they don't allow for a second by second review, that should be both slider and arrow key initiated.
I don't think I made my point clear at first. Is this better?
    Thanks,
    Steven

  • ITunes Home Movies Library working, but INCONVENIENT

I'm on iTunes 12.0.1.26, and up to date on all my Mac OS software.
I collect still photos from the web, and hold them in topical folders.   From time to time, I use Graphic Converter to "Export Slide Show to Movie", which does an acceptable job of preparing quicktime .movs that allow me to "run" the topical slideshows as movies, without needing to to manually operate any slideshow controls.   I then ADD the .movs to my iTunes Home Videos Library, where I can use iTunes' "Create New Version" to convert them to MPEG-4 formats that seem to be needed for loading to my iPhone and iPad.   I'm enjoying the results, but the whole process is tedious, particularly when I view the "Home Videos Library".   iTunes just DOES NOT IDENTIFY the format of the various copies of the movies that I end up with.   There's an icon image of a still photo in the movie in .mov format, another identical image for the movie in .mp4 or .m4v, and that's fine but I must laboriously "Get Info" on each movie to determine the actual format of each.   And I end up guessing which copy of a movie to send to the ios devices when I manually sync.  Why can't iTunes help more by, like, just SHOWING the format information underneath the icon of each movie?
Maybe I'm doing all this the hard way.   Can anyone suggest a better method?
Just in general, does anyone feel like iTunes itself has just grown so much functionality that it's increasing hard to understand and use?   It started off as a little music player, but has grown into not only the whole store thing and the whole cloud thing and the whole books and movies and tv shows thing, but also practically a separate OPERATING SYSTEM for managing iOS device content.  It now feels all bloaty and unintuitive and multi-step and clunky to me, which is not like most other Apple software.
AND I'm about to submit this question to the iTunes for Mac Community, but this support interface demands that I choose from a limited set of Categories, none of which remotely relates to my question.
    Thanks for any response!

Assuming you restarted iTunes from your comments.
It doesn't seem very prevalent but several users including myself have had issues with being Home Sharing in recent months - a library lists under computers but cannot be accessed until I restart itunes.  I am also seeing similar issues Home Sharing from one Mac to another when it just seems to hang.

  • Trouble exporting movies and transitions to quicktime help please!!!

man i have lost to much sleep trying to figure this out...lol. Everything plays correctly when i view in play mode, but when i got to export to movie the problems begin. I have video on most pages about 7 pages in total. the video should play automatically, it wont even begin to play on the first page. The hyperlinks don't even want to read properly the first hyperlink i have on the first page works, but it's pretty much a rap after that. Can anyone be of assistance, they made keynote seem like it was a piece of cake...lol i beg to differ...

Hi Cozah, just a quick note: In the past I used Power Point all the time for presentations and conferences. One day, out of curiosity, I tried creating a presentation in Keynote version 1 (a while back, previous to '08).
It was tough at first, I did a lot of trial and error, and reading the help section, but in the end I found Keynote to be more versatile and efficient in creating attractive and nice presentations. Pretty much each time I do a presentation (I usually present to many hard-to-please investors and business owners) using Keynote the two questions people ask me are: (1) who did that presentation, and (2) was the presentation done on Power Point? My answer to both is always, "it's all Keynote" I love using Keynote and Pages (Numbers I am still having a harder time getting used to, I still use Excel all the time), and now I would never return to Power Point and Word, it feels so clunky and coarse. Anyway, that's why I joined the Keynote forum, because I appreciate the application so much... anyway, that's just my opinion and two-pennies worth

  • Sorting movies on iTunes

The UI and search for iTunes is so clunky - given Apple are normally pretty handy UI designers - is this deliberate?
Jumping on to look for new releases means sifting through an awful lot of useless B movies from the past. Why isnt there a category that lets you find recent cinema releases. Or movies by year of release and then a filter by reviews like other e stores?

Actually the equivalents to folders are called play lists.
I would set up smart play lists to sort by date/scene and keep track that way.
Click on New Smart Play List under File and set up a few that way to get the hang of it.

  • Keyboard short cut for movie/audio preview

I want to go through a large collection of audio files (several thousand files) and the simplest way I've found to check out their contents has been to use the finder's preview column. However, it is still rather clunky, requiring a lot of mousing and clicking (click to select file, click in the preview column to play the preview, mouse back to previous column and click to select new file, etc.)
What I want to know is whether there is a keyboard shortcut to activate the preview play. If, for instance, the shortcut was Space (as in the QT Player) then I could quickly move down and preview a long list of audio files with a combination 'Cursor down' and 'Space'.
But Space (as, I suppose, it should) simply jumps to the top of the list of files, rather than playing the preview.
Is there a shortcut or a hack for this?

    1101/3547
    Hi Rick,
There may be an even faster solution, but here, that's what I'd try:
    Using the finder's preview column,
replace all the clicking and mousing with the keyboard equivalents, that is:
    - "click to select file": navigate through the folders in column view with the arrow keys.
    - "click in the preview column to play the preview": hit command-O (+ command-W, not at all urgent but if you mind the mess on the Desktop).
    - "mouse back to previous column": arrow back.
(of course you knew the Applications Switcher (command-Tab) is set to get you back the previously used app, in you case the Finder..)
    - "and click to select new file": arrows etc.
    Select all:
Also, what happens if you select all your sound files before hitting command-O?
In Preview this one too is very handy.
    Mousing simple:
There is another way of mousing that may be simpler, because it is one simple mouse back and forth travel between the files and the Dock, with no clicking:
Just drag the file directly onto the Dock icon of the application that opens them. It doesn't matter if soon your Desktop is cluttered with dozens of open files. Use option-command-W from time to time or even quit the app.
    Hope this helps a little.

  • Comprehensive overview/question about organizing videos and movies

I've made a few movies here and there in the original iMovie, have made a fair amount of home movies using FCE. I have 20 years worth of videos scattered around on HI-8 formatting and some videos I downloaded from a hand held digital cheapo-movie cam. I'm to the point of trying to figure out the big picture on importing, structuring, storing, and sharing these files between iMovie, FCEHD 3.5.1, mobileme, my iPhone, etc.
I'm now wanting to start uploading movies to gallery.me.com. I started doing some of this before I got cancer last year. I'm basically restarting this whole process now that I'm beyond the rigors of chemotherapy and I'm trying to make a systematic approach to managing video files and already made movies. I have a lot of questions and would appreciate any insight you can offer in this discussion forum or if you recommend I copy this over to another discussion forum. I'm not sure to even begin hot to explain all this, so be patient as I try to start this process.
#1 - I've tried using iMovie 8 in the past. I ended up, somehow, with clips here, there, and who knows where. The original iMovie seemed rather straight forward and seemed to work in conjunction with iPhoto rather seamlessly. As iMovie made that big change some time back, I quickly backed out of using that program to manage clips as I couldn't find where they were stored and more importantly, they seemed to start disappearing after time. Is iMove 08 a good resource to manage clips or is it a bit of a dead end for people who are using various programs such as FCE and so forth? Seems the transparency of how the newer iMovie manages files is a bit not-so-transparent to me anymore and I simply am not finding many of the files in iMovie 08 that I can easily spot in iPhoto. Not sure what has happened there, but I can find the files in iPhoto and browse them, but NOT in iMovie 08. Help?
#2 - the only real reason I'm asking about iMovie at all is that I want to start uploading files from HI-8 tapes into my computer rather quickly and make simple basically unedited videos of what is on the Hi-8 tapes, then perhaps transport onto mobileme and/or make some DVD's. I did a few of those somehow before the cancer/chemo deal, but can't really recall the exact steps I took. Rough bout with cancer last year and my brain is a bit fried to be honest, not to mention all of this is a big hard to grasp deal for a RN who isn't trained in video stuff at this point in his life. Besides, I ended up having to reinstall my entire OS - long story. Bottom line, the few movies I do have on mobileme are in .m4v format. Not a big deal when using my mac at home, but notice that it causes iTunes to load onto my pc's at work or when visiting friends. Slow, clunky, and not sure how it wound up in that format. I'm thinking I did that somehow through iMovie or Quicktime 7 Pro. Before I go that route again, I need to ask about #3.
#3 - I just exported my first high definition video from FCE. I did so because we got our first new TV in 22 years, nice HD flat screen. I'm wanting to start understanding options for exporting videos onto mobileme. I got Quicktime Pro 7 and used the H264 or some option like that (file>share). It was able to take 1.5 gig high def video I did over my cancer journey and put it seamlessly onto mobileme. But it is in the .m4v video option which seems to cause some people and computers problems because of the whole proprietary iTunes angle. Is there a way around this being forced to use iTunes and simply share to mobileme gallery using .mov? I tried the file>export option, seems to want to use movie folder and I'm guessing that is another iTunes deal.
#4 - as I load files into my computer from HI-8 format and the newer cheap little HD dual SD card camera I got, those seem to either want to go into iMovie's folders (which I mentioned my confusion about above) or I can manually put them into a file structure that I'm slowly learning to build using FCE. I don't mind the FCE option and it seems logical. I still run into the problem of how to share web based content of the videos. Using iDVD is rather straightforward, but I'm wanting to use some kind of web centric approach to sharing my videos on the output and have one big file structure for organizing my files/videos on the input.
I notice that iMovie has many exporting/sharing options in its menu. Are they really any different/better/worse than what I have with quicktime Pro 7? Should I even try to utilize iMovie at all or simply go with the capture option on FCE? I at least can find the files and organize them with FCE.
I'm not sure how to further word this at the moment as I'm trying to better understand all this as I'm moving forward.
Any suggestions you might have at this point would be most beneficial. I'm sure as I get further into this, I'll start clarifying my own questions and thoughts.
Any resources you can point me to for newer (but not totally new) to video structure input/exporting on the mac?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Robert,
A lot of questions, perhaps to much to go into detail but,
I can second the views of AppleMan
Since iMovie 08 I finally am able to organize and categorize my clips in an easy way. Just recently I made a DvD for one of my grandchildren containing a selection of events from over the last to years. Really a joy (not only the kid ). This would have been a much larger job without that.
When I like to do real "sophisticated" movie editing I use FCE and pick up the clips from the eventsfolder from iMovie.
Of course if you are happy with FCE for organizing (I found that a bit hard), you always can use the File->export-> quicktime movie feature and use Quicktime for uploading to mobileme or use the File->export->Quicktime conversion function.
Also within iMovie you can use the: share ->export with Quicktime, and use that to export your movie in the format you prefer.

  • How do I scroll a JTable as the selection cursor moves out-of-view?

If a row is selected in a JTable, and the user navigates up and down using arrow keys, as the selection moves out of view, the table automatically scrolls. In my app, I am programmatically selecting rows, but if the selection is out of view, the table does not scroll. does anyone know how to achieve this? I know I could examine the position of the selected row etc. and scroll the view myself, but this seems clunky. Ideally, I would fire off KeyEvents to get the behaviour for free, but I can't see where to fire them to

I know I could examine the position of the selected row etc. and scroll the view myselfWhy? Thats what the methods where designed for (assuming you are talking about the scrollRectToVisible(...) method).
Ideally, I would fire off KeyEvents to get the behaviour for free,That seems clunky to me.
When you use KeyEvents its a cause / effect relationship. That is first you use a KeyEvent to change selection. Then then if the table is at the bottom it scroll one row. So in you program if you on on row 5 and you want to select row 30, you would need to invoke 25 KeyEvents. Seems pointless to me unless you have special logice that processes every row as it gets selected.
If you want to persue this route then you can just invoke the default actions for the up/ down/ left/ right keys. This posting should give you an idea of how to do this:

No, you need to back to your original video from FCP and use that.

Outlook 2011 slow, clunky and keeps crashing with macbook pro os x 10.8.4 - any hints??  ta

You might look in your User Library for Outlook .plist(s). They probably start with com.microsoft.
    Quit Outlook.
Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Preferences.  Move the .plist(s) to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist(s) from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist(s) to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • This is a ditto... but Inserting Camtasia movies (MP4-Flash) into Captivate (a path or JS challenge)

    I’m using Captivate v. 6 and Camtasia v. 8
I’ve created Camtasia movies as MP4 – Flash.
My Captivate project is a SCORM housed on an LMS (SyberWorks) for the company’s internal intranet.
In Captivate I’ve inserted/imported movies as Event Videos, Progressive Download with a playbar/skin.
Movies are housed on same directory level as the .html and .swf zipped files.
Path to video files are relative (ie)
    Z:\Orgs\ogslp\Courses\2012DfltPrvnt\Test 6 Flash with controller2.mp4
I did find the following note on Adobe’s site:
Note: If your Adobe Captivate project contains FLV/F4V files, ensure that the files contain metadata for the video player to function correctly. FLV/F4V files created with Flash Communication Server 1.5.2, FLV Exporter version 1.2, and Sorenson Squeeze® 4.0 automatically contain metadata. Sorenson Squeeze 4.0 is included with the Flash Video Kit. If you import an FLV file that does not have any metadata, the file will not play correctly in your project.
and am waiting for the IT department to get a copy of Adobe Media Encoder so I can embed javascript into my mp4/Flash Movies.
The movies of course play very well off my hard drive, but not off the LMS, a deja vu from the link below.
So… is my issue a path issue or do I simply need to embed javascript into my video(s), or perhaps both?

And PS, why are no videos showing up in the video manager? I can see them in the author slides, but not in the manager.
    Thnx - wjf

This is a reply to my own message. A work around that will allow our team to move forward is to make a screen capture of a screen capture. We have content experts who are equipped with Camtasia. These folks will make their narrated movies. I'll then capture their movies with Captivate's screen capture by following: Insert > Recording Slide. Google Chrome of course has the Flash player installed by default so I open the mp4 (M4V) or FLV movie via Chrome and use Captivate's Recording Slide, choose Video Demo option. This gets me a Camtasia screen capture into Captivate. Import audio on its own and it matches up with my test of a movie 1 minute long (longer videos might slip out of sync - will test this).
However, the movie does not have the convenient playbar attached, so video navigation/control can be gained via a Captivate playbar for the slide itself. This offers a double set of navigation options b/c I also created my own set of navigation controls with Flash, but with a simple set of instructions users will know to use bottom playbar for video control and my flash buttons for slide navigation. Its a bit clunky, but this is what I have for now until the engineers have time to target the following:

PS I'm sure a simple javascript code could fix this, but for me javascript isn't so easy;)

  • Is there a way to move cursor using virtual keyboard?

Since there are no arrow keys on a virtual keyboard...
is there a way to move your cursor through your text without effecting your text using your virtual keys like you can with a physical keyboard's arrow keys
Or is the only way... to use your finger in the magnifying glass to drag/reposition your cursor which I'm getting better at but still find clunky, imprecise and slow requiring extra concentration, much more than using arrow keys.

Nope. The only way of doing this is using third-party note taker apps like the free(!!) Arrow Note ( http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/arrow-note-text-editor-up/id474740405?mt=8 )

  • Sharing iTunes movies with family member

Hi everyone and thank you in advance if you can help me at all.
At home my partner and I share my MBP (using only one account), which contains my iTunes library that I use with several of my own devices (ipad, iphone, ipod). My partner is going to buy an iPad this week and I want us to be able to share TV/Movies whilst maintaining separate iTunes libraries on the MBP (we have very different music tastes and do not want to 'pollute' each others' libaries). Any future TV/Movies purchases will not be made from a shared itunes account - in case we break up we'd want to walk away with our respective movies.
Apart from creating a new user account on the MBP for my partner and re-locating both iTunes libraries to the shared 'public' folder so that we can manually add movies and TV to our individual iTunes accounts (which seems like a clunky and hard-drive consuming solution) I'm not sure what to do.
    Is there another way?
    Thanks
    Carrie

    Hi bcarrie,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The method you mention above is the best way to share your iTunes libraries:

The other option would be to backup the iTunes library to an external drive, and then copy it to the new User Account if you want to develop the two libraries independently.
