Cluster machines for quicker rendering?

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro, the newest addition. It's the 15" quad core and so on and I'm starting an early career in video editing, I've made enough to make me think about this, would purchasing even the Mac Mini Server with the quad core and then clustering (not sure if thats correct terms, never done it before) to make a mini render farm so my projects dont take hours when adding effects before I can begin working again.
Any ideas on the possibilities?

I also have a couple of MacBooks ... one a 2010 MacBook Pro and the other a 2011 MacBook Air. You know, the reality is, the MacBook Pro laptops are proving to be a lot slower with more problems than the desktop iMacs, etc. If you had a few of them, you would not really be getting your money's worth for what you are trying to do. It would be frustrating and slow. I do most of my development on a 2011iMac 21" i5 running Lion and FCP X with 16GB of memory and drives up to 2.5TB as the main external firewire 800 drive with several other drives totaling more than 10GB for backups, archive, sharing, etc.
One way you might lay out your plans would be to think of your MacBook Pro as your portable machine where you could continue your work when traveling, at the coffee shop, etc and to then get a good desktop machine like the one described earlier ... or even like the one I use now. I produce projects weekly that range from 40 minutes to an hour and a half, and my machine is more than capable for doing this 24/7. The key is system memory and processor cores. Also important is to get a compatible graphics card. The reason I bought the 2011 iMac 21" is because, as I am sitting in front of it, it fills up my field of view in a really comfortable, but not too large, way. In other words, my work is comfortable, enjoyable and very efficient. I use my MacBook Pro as my on-the-go machine. I use the 21" as the main workhorse. I am very happy with it. I figured that, although reduced in number of cores from tower systems, this is the perfect machine for me. Video work is almost all I do on the machine.
Anyway, just thinking out loud. Think of your laptop in a different role and augment it with a good desktop. I think you will really like it. Put something like 32GB in the desktop and 8GB in the MacBook Pro. Both take external Firewire 800 drives so you can switch back and forth as needed. Take a look at the following little video for a guy that shows exactly how he does that ... Best wishes.

Some advice for quicker rendering of work area preview in AE?

I've been using premiere over the past while and gotten used to the option of 'render effects in work area' and then leaving it for a few minutes till the green bar is ready to be viewed, but now that I am using After effects, i have found that RAM preview is extremely slow, very very slow, especially when working with particle systems, is there a quicker option to select is i only wish to preview the small work area of the composition? Is RAM preview work the same way as 'render effects in work area' as in premiere or should i be using a different preview render option?

There are numerous options in the RAM Preview pallet for creating faster previews. You can preview just the work area. You can reduce preview resolution. You can reduce preview frame rate.
You can also solo layers to preview a specific layer animation without having to render the entire composition.
Remember that AE previews in a very different way to Premiere Pro. AE loads every pixel of every preview frame into RAM before it plays, while PPro can play straight off your hard drive.

Do I need 3 machines for Sun Two-Node Cluster HA for Apache?

The vendor is trying to set up a Sun Cluster HA for Apache and said it requires a dedicated machine
for monitoring purpose(The Sun Cluster HA for Apache probe??). Is this monitoring machine mandatory and have to be dedicated for that purpose? And can I use 1 machine to monitor more than 1 cluster? Because the vendor requires 2 extra machine to monitor 2 set of 2-node cluster..and the document I read from Sun only mentions the 3rd machine is required for admin console.
Also, if I only have 2 node cluster, can I configure Apache as a scalable + failover service at the same time or I have to choose either one? Thanks!!

Incorrect. You can set up a Solaris Cluster on a single node if you wish although two nodes give you redundancy. The probe for Apache runs from the node on which Apache is executing.
If you have a two node cluster you could have multiple implementations of Apache: fail-over and scalable. You can mix them until you run out of resources: CPU, networking bandwidth, IP addresses, etc.

Is cluster node g5 2.0 capable of being a parts machine for g5 normal serve?
Is the power supply, motherboard, CPU, memory, etc the same?
I have a g5 that was taken out of service for 3 weeks and when put back in service does nothing at all when powering up....no sounds..no lights...nothing. In another thread checking the PRAM was suggested. Someone else suggested swapping out the power supply. One thing may need to another and I may need a parts machine. Will this approach work? Is a cluster node different only in case style....everything else the same?

I think you should be all right as there is a logic board variant that is common to both - 661-3153. However there are 3 different EEE codes for this part number so double check first. You could call your nearest Apple Authorized Repair Specialist and they should be able to tell you based on the Serial Numbers of both units. Typically this number will begin with CK number.
There are minor differences between the two as you have probably noticed. For example the XServe G5 comes with an optical drive whereas the Cluster Node does not. Similarly the XServe G5 has a three headed hard drive cable whereas for the cluster node its a single connector.

i have installed the oracle weblogic server 10gr3 and oracle BPM enterprise for weblogic 10gR3
i have used the Admin tools from the "oracle BPM enterprise for weblogic" to setup the configuration and create the weblogic domain servers.
i can launch the process administrator and import the project exp file to domain server.
but what should i do to setup cluster environment using weblogic?
what i want to do is :
setup one admin machine..
setup two product machine..
enable the cluster so the admin machine can monitor the status of the product machine..

The install guide at http://download-llnw.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13154_01/bpm/docs65/config_guide/index.html gives a reasonable amount of info on how to do this.
Personally I have not used the OBPM option to configure WebLogic instead I've used the information in the above install guide to create the weblogic domain in advance of configuring OBPM.
Once you've setup WebLogic configure OBPM using the values I mention in the following thread: How to set the JMX Engine parameter in Process Administation?
Let me know any specific config questions and I'll do my best to answer them for you.

Setting a proper domain name and adding hosts for quick name resolution

I have 3 other computers in my house.
Two run linux at this time.
I want to do 2 things. Right now my machine says Steve.local for its hostname right? I want to change that so it reads Steve.mydomain.net.
Am I correct that I need to
sudo /etc/hostconfig
And change the hostname line from -Automatic- to =
HOSTNAME=Steve.mydomain.net
And for quicker resolution of the small number of hosts on my network (primarily so I can use hostname instead of IP for ssh) can I add static hosts to the /etc/hosts file on my machine ala:
sudo /etc/hosts
Is this the proper way to do these things in Mac OS X?
Also to change my workgroup for Samba:
Open the Directory Access utility (under Applications -> Utilities)
I highlight SMB and click configure and just change the Workgroup entry there. Is that correct as well?

Ok update changing the hostname in the field does NOT allow me to edit the .local part. In fact it converts Steve.mydomain.net.local to Steve-mydomain-net.local.
But I got my windows workgroup changed and I am showing up with the correct workgroup name from my other servers.
Also, lets say you only have a couple of computers on your home network right? So dedicated dns is kind of overkill especially when most of them are laptops rebooting all the time.
Well, your mac os x box has a hosts file. /etc/hosts as in if you want to edit sudo vi /etc/hosts. So you keep the computers pretty much in sync from those files.
I was afraid the information would not be persistent across a reboot. It was.
So, two out of three ain't bad. I read in the server forum its a pain in the ***. I was almost thinking of doing the hostconfig trick but I saw an Apple bulletin saying do NOT do that.

TREX install on cluster machine

We have a Windows 2003 server cluster where we already have a SAP Java system installed and E: is the drive for the cluster resource. Now we need to install TREX for this system and due to a shortage of hardware / time we want to attempt to install it on the cluster machines. We know that clustering is not supported by TREX but are trying to install it as a stand alone instance on each server and will manually start the instance that is required.
However, when we try to install TREX on either server instead of going to the local drive it tries to go the E: drive (I guess because it is being told that a SAPMNT exists here).
Does any one know if it is possible to force it to install locally on the server?

I tried to load the 'Excel Cluster Connector for Microsoft HPC Pack 2012 R2' but get an error 'A runtime error occured during the loading of the COM Add-in'.
My environment:
Windows 2012 R12 Std edition
HPC Pack 2012 R2
Excel 2010 - 64 bits
I have generated a Fusion file (see below). Has someone an idea what went wrong? I already tried to copy 'Microsoft.Hpc.Excel.XllConnector.DLL' to 'C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office14' but that did not help.

Search Time Machine For HTML Code

I need to find when an email address was changed in the code of an HTML file I've been working on the last couple of days. The Time Machine preview pane will render the browser view of the html and I can see the changes over time, but I can't see the embedded code for the email address. Since the preview changes, my hunch is the code is available somehow unless TM is taking a billion little jpgs at every backup.
Any way I can get the preview to view html instead of rendering it?

Great attempt at a solution, however, so far, a dead end. I've been using Time Machine for years but have only needed to fetch a file "from the past" a handful of times, so I may be missing something on how to use it.
I changed the .html files associated application to TextEdit universally. Even restarted the machine for good measure and headed back into the past. The info pane sees TextEdit as the associated app, but the preview sheet still reneders the browser version. I see the "Open with TextEdit" button at the top of the preview pane which is enabled, but no function fires when I press it. I also tried associated all files with SkEdit just for kicks, same response.
OH, SOLVED!
I didn't know you could open the bundle directory and drill down to the file. Years ago when that was called a sparsebundle you couldn't get into it so I've been assuming that was still true. I was using the Star Wars Time Machine UI to retrieve which is why the limited functionality. Ok all is well, thanks.

State machine for text-based instrument control

I am trying to control a text-based instrument to set various parameters and turn modes on and off.
My main question is about the four case structures on the far right of controller.vi. I need something that will write the command to visa (just once) after a button click. The way I've done it is obviously not ideal.. I'd like to be able to have a boolean (or preferably a radio control) controlling RC mode on/off and common mode on/off. As far as I can tell, the way that sort of thing is *supposed* to be done is with an event structure, but I've only got the base package. Radiobuttonstatemachine.vi is my first attempt at trying to make a state machine for this purpose. But it just runs once and then quits, or while it's running it hangs everything else up.
Currently the VI only works in continous mode-- I'm pretty sure that's one of my biggest problems-- no? What is the correct way to make an event structure without an event structure?

PS. Apologies in advance-- I know this is probably really obvious but all of the questions and tutorials I can find do this kind of thing with an event structure, which I can't use. I'm an undergraduate doing an internship and this is my first time using labview (basically my first time with any programming) so ANY ANY help would be be very appreciated.. There are a few things to remember with LabVIEW. The reason your program only works in continous mode is that LabVIEW is a dataflow language, it executes the objects as their inputs are satisfied, then their results travel to the next "node". In your original program the messages to the instrument are in "nodes" that are all "serially" connected, so that unless you run it in continuous mode there is no loop back to the beginning to read any changes. When you start the program in the non-continuous mode it will read all the front panel settings almost instantly, "flow" to the message sending nodes and then end.
Can you get the full package? User interfaces are much easier to design with "events", but remember thoise were only added a few major releases ago, you just have to be trickier.

Raid 0 for media or previews? Using DSLR footage with Avid codec Sequence for smart rendering

I am on a PC currently using raid0 for media (4x 7200rp drives, read/write at 600) and exporting (no previews) to my sas 15k rpm (read/write about 180) previews/render drive.
I want to use avid codec for my sequence settings, will be doing smart rendering and exporting preview files for quicker exports.
My question, should I export to my raid0 since I will be exporting previews? Or is it better to keep the same setup and just add an export drive?

Either would work but since the Media array is so much faster than the Render drive, the export times probably wont change much exporting to the Render drive.

Send error report for quick time and i tunes

I need some help tried everything that apple has to offer to try to fix this on my own but noting is working i get for quick time error bex and a bunch of other numbers like 7.65.17.80 and 4afa5825 and 000130d and c0000409, and for i tunes applever: 9.0.3.15 modver: 5.1.2600.5755 and offset: 0001b21a, i followed a post that b noir was helping some one out that had the same problem but it never finished it went as far as dl a free malware program i did that and scanned let me know what i have to do next please

How can I add more chosen websites for quick access in the remaining empty fields in "file"-"new tab"? ing empty fields

I can´t add preferred, chosen, most visited or bookmarked websites to the 28,15 or 6fields in"file" - "new tab". I have a PC with Windows Vista and have been using Firefox with additional Google toolbar as my preferred or default browser for several years. I have downloaded several updates. I suspect that my version is now 4 or 5. Originally the Google for Firefox new tab feature showing chosen favourite or preferred websites for quick one click access worked fine but I seem to have lost the abiiity or forgotten how to add new such favourites for quick access. The "edit" button there on the bottom left can only delete valuable chosen sites, which then seem to the be lost forever. This edit button is very dangerous! The "bookmarks" and "most visited" tabs listed show a wild coincidental mixture of sites I once visited sometime but have nothing to do with my real favourites or chosen or most visited sites. So I don´t use these bookmark or "most visited" features.

Most visited would not be your bookmarks, but your tab history.
You can check that out via Ctrl+Shift+H then search on ":" (colon without the quotes). Sort on the "Visits Count" (descending) and you will see that they agree.
