Cluster resources offline
Hi.
I have a simple question.
Do all of these resources need to be online?
How do I need to investigate on this?
Thanks.

Hi,
It's not mandatory to have all resources online however when we create a database, all resources are added by default like ASM, database instance, service, gns, VIP, Listener etc. and all resources should be online to take advantage of RAC.
There are two things here. Target and state. Target defines whether a resource is enabled or not. For ex: if we create any service, it will show offline both in target and status column and once you enable it, it'll show online in target column and once you start it, it'll show online in status column as well. When target is online and crs is enabled to start automatically while node reboot, CRS will try to bring all resources online automatically.
However default database serice (which is created first when you create first RAC database ) cannot be set as offline in target i.e. you can't disable it.
About investigation, you can go to $ORACLE_HOME/log/racg/nodename and you'll find log files for all services. I hope i mentioned the path correctly.
Thanks,

Cluster Resource offline, Windows 2008R2
Hi All,
I have cluster nodes.
My cluster was working fine untill last week, after that it failed to bring the resource online.
I see that cluster IP is online, but name not online,.
I have checked from the DNS side the cluster name has host entry, both
nodes are communication to DC.
When i try to bring the resource online, it fails.
pls help.Hi sassgp,
What event id in cluster manager you got when cluster fail, please offer us more information about your environment, please first install the following update to narrow down the issue area.

Hello All,
Recently, on a 4 node Windows 2003 File Share Cluster, we encountered a problem where when trying to remove few shares (that were no longer in use) directly from SAN end crashed the entire Cluster (i.e., other shares also lost their SAN connectivity). I
suppose the Cluster resources need to be brought offline prior removing it from SAN but I've been advised that these shares were not the root and instead a 'mount point' created within the share; and hence there is no need of bringing down any Cluster resources
offline.
Please can someone comment on the above and provide me detailed steps as to how we go about reclaiming SAN space from specific shares on a W2003 Cluster?
p.s., let me know if you need any additional information.
Thanks in advance.Hi Alex,
The problem started when SAN Support reclaimed few storage LUNs by unmapping them from our clustered file servers. When they reclaimed the unused LUNs, other SAN drives which were there also disappeared causing the unavailability of file shares.
Internet access is not enabled on these servers. Servers in question are running 64-bit Windows Server 2003 Sp2. This is a four node file share cluster. When the unsued LUN's were pulled, the entire Cluster lost its SAN connectivity. Windows cluster service
was not starting on any of the cluster nodes. To resolve the problem all the four cluster nodes were rebooted after which cluster service started on all the cluster nodes and resources came online.

Taking cluster disk offline made all other resources in the group to go offline.
Hi,
We have three node windows 2008 R2 failover cluster. When we tried to take one of the cluster disk offline from a application and services, it made all other resources in that application and services to go offline even though there was no dependency on
this disk. I want to know why it made all other resources to go offline. Can some one clarify please? Is it a default behavior?
Umesh"When we tried to take one of the cluster disk offline from a application and services, it made all other resources in that application and services to go offline even though there was no dependency on this disk."
I'm a little unclear on your problem description. You state you are taking a "disk offline from a application and services". That implies the disk is necessary for the application and/or service, otherwise there is no way to take it
offline from that application and/or service. Then you state "there was no dependency on this disk". If there was no dependency on the disk, how you could take it "offline from a application and services"?
Using the Failover Cluster Manager consolde, select one of the resources that is going offline. Click on the Resources tab at the bottom of the center window. That resource does not show any dependency on the disk being taken offline?
Does it show dependency on any other resource that is dependent upon the disk you are taking offline?

While installing sql server 2012 with failover clustering I got the following error:
The cluster resource 'SQL Server' could not be brought online. Error: There was a failure to call cluster code from a provider. Exception message: Generic failure. Status code: 5942. Description: The resource failed to come online due to the failure of one
or more provider resources.
The two nodes of the sql server failover have been successfully prepared. The error came while running the advance cluster completion option.
In the clustered events in failover cluster manager the following message is displayed:
Cluster resource 'SQL Network Name (CPCTestSQLClus)' of type 'Network name' in clustered role 'SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)' failed.
I have done various checking and the issue remained. I tried to start the sqlPlease find below part of the content of the cluster log. I hope this is helpful in resolving the issue:

The cluster resource could not be found (0x138F)
Recommended Action
Resolve the issue and then try the operation again.
Storage migration actually succeeds and after Repair/Ignore and Refresh, the VM shows up ok in VMM, with the VHD in new location.
If VM is offline, storage migration always succeeds. Live (non-storage) migration always succeeds.
I noticed in the error message that it searches for cluster resource name "SCVMM test-vm" and for some VMs I've got different cluster resource names.
Like for this VM cluster resource names are:
Virtual Machine test-vm
Virtual Machine Configuration test-vm
Furthermore, those resource names are showing up correctly in [VirtualManagerDB].[dbo].[tbl_WLC_VMInstance] table, columns VMResource and VMConfigResource.
Anyone knows why SCVMM keeps searching for "SCVMM test-vm" and how to fix this without recreating cluster resources?Ok, you have the same problem and same configuration that this post:

Installation issue with a mounted cluster resource
Hello
given: SC 3.1 9/04 on Solaris 9 sparc
we run RSA Authentication Manager 6.0 on a 2 node cluster.
This is installed into /opt/ace - which is a storage cluster resource.
It's the fact that if I install the ACE into /opt/ace, then I take the storage cluster offline, I still can see all of the underlying ACE directories.
Under normal circumstances the directory should be empty, but it is not.
I don't know why.
ok, step by step
the directory is empty, and the resource is Online -

Constantly "Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine' in clustered service or application 'SERVER' failed
Hi...
I have an IBM BladeCenter S with 3 blades and an IBM System Storage DS3300 (ISCSI).
In each blade is running Windows Server 2008 R2 with
HYPER-V,
Failover Clustering with Cluster Shared Volumes.
I have observed that many errors occur constantly in "Failover Cluster Manager" and some VM´s are relocated to another blade automatically, however thoses VM´s sometimes no longer responds to network activity.
The errors I have observed in the "Failover Cluster Manager" are:
Source: Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClusting
Event ID: 1069
Description:
Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine' in clustered service or application 'SERVER' failed.
Source: Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClusting
Event ID: 1205
Description:
The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'SV-DBURAS' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.
Another error (warning type) that is constantly generated in the SYSTEM events (Mirage is the storage name):
Source: ds4dsm
Event ID: 769
Description:
IO error being retried via alternate controller Mirage:1
Source: ds4dsm
Event ID: 10
Description:

Cluster resource ' Disk Name' of type 'Physical Disk' in clustered role 'Role Name' failed.
We have been observing issues with our file Cluster (Windows Server 2012 R2 Std Clustered with 2 Nodes) where File Server gets
unresponsive for SMB access request event id 30809 in Microsoft-Windows-SMBClient/Connectivity is observed
and when we try to failover the role clustered disks fail to get offline with an error in event id 1069 Cluster resource ' Disk Name' of type 'Physical Disk' in clustered role 'Role Name' failed, we have to force fully reboot the node which faces this
issue. It works properly for a week and again we get the same issue, this happens with all the disks in different file server roles.
Regards Ajinkya Ghare MCITP-Server Administrator | MCTSwe didn't found any thing in the cluster logs, in the WitnessClientAdmin logs we found errors related to failed registration

Howto take SQL Server 2005 Cluster AND Cluster Group Offline
I need to update firmware on the backend storage used by our Active/Passive SQL Server 2005 Cluster. The first step in the process states that all I/O to the disks should be stopped. Per that, I need to take the the SQL Server cluster offline AND the cluster group; however, I then need to use one of the servers that participates in the cluster to perform the upgrade on the storage array. Using the process (which doesn't account for having to use one of clustered servers to perform updates) outlined at http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1550288&SiteID=1 as a basis, below is my best guess regarding what I will need to do:
Shutdown:
1. Backup all of your databases prior to the outage and ensure they are in a safe place (NOT on the disk drives in the cluster)
2. Take the SQL Server group OFFLINE. This will cleanly shutdown the SQL Server and it will remain offline when you power the machine back on.
3. Once SQL Server is offline, power off the node which does NOT have the cluster resource currently running on it
4. Save the node which is running the cluster group for last - make a note of this machine as it will be the first one you power back on. MY ADDITION: Before powering it down, set the cluster service to manual so that when you restart the server to perform the storage array maintenance, the cluster will not be running - and likewise not generating I/O against the disk array.
MY ADDITION: 5. Restart the server from step 4. Takes the cluster offline "cleanly" and brings the server back on line so that the storage array maintenance can be performed.
6. Update the firmware on the storage array. After that is complete, set the cluster service back to "Automatic".
Start up:
1. Restart the server. Per the previous steps, the server to be restarted will be the server that last hosted the cluster group and the one used to update the firmware on the storage array.
2. RDP into the node, open cluster administrator, and verify that the cluster came back online successfully and everything looks clean
3. Power on the second node.
4. Failover the cluster group across each node in the cluster and validate that everything looks OK
5. Bring your SQL Server groups back online
6. Validate that everything is operational
Is there a better way to do this or official documentation for the process?
Thanks.FYI: I did use the process outlined above to briing the cluster offline, perform updates, and bring it back online. It worked as I had hoped. As a test, I had also done the same on a test [non-SQL] cluster prior to making the updates to our SQL cluster. Is it the best way to do it? Who knows. Did it work? Yes.

Hi,
I have 2 node windows cluster 2008 R2 Cluster resources are offline due to Cluster resource Ip conflict.
Windows
has detected Ip address conflict
Another
computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows system event log.
Checked and found that Cluster resources ip address getting conflict with node 1. how can it be conflicting with itself?
Kindly let me know how to fix this issue.
Regards,
Sridharan. MHi Murat Demirkiran,
Thanks for the above infoirmation.
I have same issue in one my my cluster server. I have a two node server. as you said above i have 3 different IP address for node 1, node 2 and Cluster name. My issues
is that resource 1 ip address is conflict with Node 2 server.(Resource 1 ip address is conflict with the ip address of node 2 (showing the mac ID of node 2).
Please help me on this please

Cluster resource does not start automatically
Hello,
I have a strange issue. last saterday i replaced the motherboards of three HP DL380G6 servers, there is an HW issue with the production date of this hardware.
After change of the HW, the cluster resources does not start automatically, when booting the servers. The resources come in state 'offline'(except the master IP resource). When start manually, the cluster resources works fine. I checked the eDirectory , and changed also the startup parameter of the cluster (autostart-manually-autostart) but with no results.
When i create a new (simple) CL-resource, i have the same issue with this resource. Only the master ip CL-resource starts automatically??
Does anyone have an answer for this problem....
Thanks in advanced

The state is stored in eDir, so your problem is most likely caused by an eDir issue.
Please check the attribute "NCS:CRM Failover Mode" of the resource object in eDir. If its value is an odd number, it means the resource will load automatically. If it's not, add 1 to the number and save the new value.
Then, you need to check file "/var/opt/novell/ncs/resources.xml". Find the section for the resource, and check "nCSCRMFailoverMode" to make sure it matches what you have in eDir. If not, please run command "/opt/novell/ncs/bin/ncs-configd.py -init" to try to update it.
If the problem persists after all the above, please contact NTS. We will have it resolved.

The I started looking in the /u01/app/11203/grid/log/oel6-112-rac1/agent/crsd/oraagent_grid/oraagent_grid.log file and found out that at the same time (2013-07-01 22:39:22),
I saw the following lines:
2013-07-01 22:39:22.433: [ora.CRS.dg][1644160768] {1:13152:2} [check] DgpAgent::getConnxn connection failure 1

But that does not prevent the asm from being started properly.
The only local resource that didn't start up automatically was the LISTENER.
The following command shows that the local LISTENER has hard dependency on ora.cluster_vip_net1.type which is the ora.oel6-112-rac1.vip
[grid@oel6-112-rac1 bin]$ ./crsctl status resource ora.LISTENER.lsnr -p | grep -ie dependencies
START_DEPENDENCIES=hard(type:ora.cluster_vip_net1.type) pullup(type:ora.cluster_vip_net1.type)
STOP_DEPENDENCIES=hard(intermediate:type:ora.cluster_vip_net1.type)
NAME=ora.oel6-112-rac1.vip
TYPE=ora.cluster_vip_net1.type
START_DEPENDENCIES=hard(ora.net1.network) pullup(ora.net1.network)
STOP_DEPENDENCIES=hard(ora.net1.network)
[grid@oel6-112-rac1 bin]$ ./crsctl status resource ora.net1.network -p | grep -ie dependencies
START_DEPENDENCIES=
STOP_DEPENDENCIES=
The ora.net1.network resource started properly and I didn't see that this prevent the ora.oel6-112-rac1.vip from starting up.
The following lines also show that the ora.asm resource is has a weak dependency only against the ora.LISTENER.lsnr
[grid@oel6-112-rac1 bin]$ ./crsctl status resource ora.racdb.db -p | grep -ie dependencies
START_DEPENDENCIES=hard(ora.DATADG.dg,ora.FRADG.dg) weak(type:ora.listener.type,global:type:ora.scan_listener.type,uniform:ora.ons,global:ora.gns) pullup(ora.DATADG.dg,ora.FRADG.dg)
STOP_DEPENDENCIES=hard(intermediate:ora.asm,shutdown:ora.DATADG.dg,shutdown:ora.FRADG.dg)
[grid@oel6-112-rac1 bin]$ ./crsctl status resource ora.CRS.dg -p | grep -ie dependenci
START_DEPENDENCIES=hard(ora.asm) pullup(ora.asm)
STOP_DEPENDENCIES=hard(intermediate:ora.asm)
[grid@oel6-112-rac1 bin]$ ./crsctl status resource ora.DATADG.dg -p | grep -ie dependencies
START_DEPENDENCIES=hard(ora.asm) pullup(ora.asm)
STOP_DEPENDENCIES=hard(intermediate:ora.asm)
[grid@oel6-112-rac1 bin]$ ./crsctl status resource ora.FRADG.dg -p | grep -ie dependencies
START_DEPENDENCIES=hard(ora.asm) pullup(ora.asm)
STOP_DEPENDENCIES=hard(intermediate:ora.asm)
[grid@oel6-112-rac1 bin]$ ./crsctl status resource ora.asm -p | grep -ie dependencies
START_DEPENDENCIES=weak(ora.LISTENER.lsnr)
STOP_DEPENDENCIES=
I'm a little lost here.
A suggestion would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,

Cluster Resource control and agent
Hi,
I have written a custom agent to make our java based application highly available. It is a scalable resource group. So I was just wondering if there is a way to bring resource group offline on just one node. One command I know of is switch -z -g <groupname> -h <list of node where u want service to be up>. This works fine but in my case we will have multiple nodes running this resource group and if I get the nodelist from resource group and remove the node where I want to stop my application and give all the remaining in the list then it will even bring resource group online on the node where it was stop by administrator previously or as a work around I will have to remember all the nodes where it was brought down and script it create list where it should be up. So I was just wondering if this feature is available in sun cluster 3.1 or it should be an enhancement request to sun.
Secondly in my agent I have some extension properties defined, so I was just wondering if there is a way to define these properties in such a way that it can have different value on all the nodes of the cluster. I know sun cluster resource group has some such properties like RG_state where it has different values on all the nodes. So is there a way I can extend this to extension properties too.
Thanks in advance.
VivekYou can change the nodelist of the resource group; scswitch -cg <rg> -h <nodes> where nodes are all nodes except the node(s) you want to offline the resource.

Cluster resource authorizations
Is there anyway to limit a role to only control specific cluster resource groups? I want to give application admins the capability to take their resource groups offline or switch nodes. If I add the solaris.cluster.admin authorization, it will still give them access to all resources even though I limit the commands that they can run. They can still use the clrg command to shutdown all resources.
Thanks Tim. I have actually done that. I have created a script to switch the resource from one node to the secondary node and gave the role access to this script. The script runs the clrg switch command for the specific resources. But to allow the role to run the script, I had to grant the role the solaris.cluster.admin authorization. Because of this, the role now can run the clrg switch from the command line. Am I missing something with this? Here are the pertinent info:
$ profiles ddradm
ASG Admin
ASG Commands
All
Basic Solaris User
$ grep ASG prof_attr
ASG Admin:::ASG Administrators:auths=solaris.cluster.admin;profiles=ASG Commands
ASG Commands:::ASG Admin Commands:
$ grep ASG exec_attr
ASG Admin:solaris:cmd:::/zones/rbac/asg/asg_switch_primary_bcp.sh:uid=0
ASG Admin:solaris:cmd:::/zones/rbac/asg/asg_switch_primary_prod.sh:uid=0
ASG Admin:solaris:cmd:::/zones/rbac/asg/asg_switch_primary_qa.sh:uid=0
If I did not grant the solaris.cluster.admin auth to the profile, the script fails when it tries to run the clrg switch command.
