CMD C/V etc make system sounds??

Weird one here and even after some thorough searching I cannot find an answer to this one.
For some reason my keyboard shortcuts are triggering a sound effect. What's weirder is the sound effect matches one currently selected in the system prefernces audio panel. So if I select 'funk' in that list CMD+C will make the funk sound effect. Unfortunately there is no option to select nothing at all.
I cannot get it to stop and it's driving me crazy, I've even switched off the sound effects and yet the shortcuts still make a noise. For the time being I have 'bottle' selected as it's the least offensive but seeing as I work with InDesign all day (and like listening to spotify etc) it's driving me crazy hearing this noise all of the time.
So far I have tried permission repair, disk check, PRAM and SMC reset, Cache Rebuild (via Onyx) and so far nothing has fixed it.
Absolutely nothing new has been downloaded or installed which could have instigated this happening. I simply switched on my machine yesterday and it was there.
I fear that a re-install would just bring the issue back if I migrated my user profile over from Time Machine and I really don't want to start afresh.
Someone please help.

  • System sound (like when empty trash) miserably stop working in Lion 10.7.2

I have upgraded to Lion10.7.2 on my Macbook Pro early 2008 Intel 15 inches, and the update went fine except one annoying problem I found so far.
This problem also occurred in 10.7.0 and 10.7.1 and it seems that no fix has been made in 10.7.2
The problem is when I drag file to Trash and empty it, there should be trash empty sound effect, and this has been with us since Tiger.
In 10.7.2 it work as expected, but when I close the lid to get it to sleep, once I open the lid, the system sound is gone without no reason.
When I play music from iTunes, or when I change volume level, the sound effects work as usual, but empty trash sound stop working miserable.
I have to shut down, press Option-Command-P-R and power on to reset PRAM then system sound like empty trash come back. Again, afpr may be half a day, it's gone again
Any friend here has solution for this? The com.apple.soundprefs.plist file, if you delete it, in Lion, it is not recreated again, and it's gone forever. SO delete plist file is not a solution.
    Help please

I found a workaround to my problem accidentally.
As the system sound like empty trash or file drag sound stop working miserably, after close the MBP lid to sleep, after it awake, system sound just stop working.
Before this, I have to shut down my MBP, reset PRAM by press Option-Control-P-R and power on, to get the system sound back
But I found that the workaround whenever the system sound stop working thad do not require reboot is:
    1. Go to System Preference-Sound
    2. Change Play sound effects through: Internal Speakers to Soundflower 2ch) in the drop down list.
(Soundflower has been installed by a software called iShowU HD (screen capturing software))
    3. Slide to change Alert Volume from the original position
    4. Switch back to Internal Speakers from Soundflower 92ch) in the drop down list
    5. Change Alert Volume by moving slide bar back to the desirable position
Immediately, the sound effects that stop working will start working again.
This just work for my case. I don't know it will work for ther people that have the same problem as me or not.
And if possible, can some expert here give me explanation why doing the above make system sound effect to work again? mI want to know the cause, and definite solution to the problem
Advise and suggestion please. Thank in advance

  • HT4085 I want to make auto make the autorotation and have system sound also, how can I fixed it?

I just update ios to 5.1.1.
    Please help

See if this helps you understand it better.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • All of a sudden my i-phone won't make any sounds. no ringtone, etc..

My phone won't make any sounds?

Well it happens to me 3 times with the iphone since I update it to IOS 6. Now I notice the same problem with my macbook air. I was able to resolve this isue with the computer. But on the iphone and have to restore the phone three times and it happens again. Those butoms up and down volume it seems that they do not work at all.

  • How can I make the volume buttons on my iPod Touch control ALL sounds - not just alerts and system sounds?

I would like to TOTALLY silence my iPod.  I turn the volume all the way down using the buttons on the side, but this just silences alerts and system sound effects.  Then I start a game, and the game sounds still play.  Of course I can turn the volume down after the game starts, but by then I'm already busted :-)
    I don't know if it's related, but...
I can plug in my headphones and then turn the game volume all the way down. But when I remove the headphones, the volume goes back up again.

  • Module snd-hda-intel ingore its /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf

    Hi,
I have trouble with modprobe. During boot there are loaded modules, I suppose with configs in /etc/modprobe.d. To get my sound card working I need to load module snd-hda-intel with this option:
    options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig
So I added the line to /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf. The option isn't loaded during boot, but if I rmmod snd-hda-intel and modprobe snd-hda-intel then is everything OK.
    Thx for help.

ALSA  has  a  special built‐in module autoloading system.  You do
not have to make use of it, and it is useless if your /dev direc‐
tory  is managed by udev, but in case you do want to use it, here
is a brief explanation of how it is supposed to work.
When the "snd" module is loaded and the  user  tries  to  open  a
sound  device  file  with a minor number that indicates that card
number N is wanted, snd modprobes "snd‐card‐N".  Thus, if you set
up module loader configuration file /etc/modprobe.d/sound to look
    like this:
        alias snd‐card‐0 snd‐cs46xx
        options snd‐cs46xx index=0
then snd‐cs46xx will be automagically loaded when it is needed to
handle  the  attempted open() of the sound device.  The "index=0"
option ensures that when snd‐cs46xx is loaded the first card that
it registers is given index 0.
If  you  have an additional sound card of the same type then make
    the file look like this:
        alias snd‐card‐0    snd‐cs46xx
        alias snd‐card‐1    snd‐cs46xx
        options snd‐cs46xx  index=0,1
If you have, instead, an additional sound  card  of  a  different
type then make the file look like this:
        alias snd‐card‐0    snd‐cs46xx
        options snd‐cs46xx  index=0
        alias snd‐card‐1    snd‐emu10k1
        options snd‐emu10k1 index=1
ALSA supports up to eight sound cards.
The alsaconf program, available in the alsa‐utils package (in De‐
bian but not in Ubuntu),  performs  hardware  detection  and  can
write  out a module loader configuration file that looks like the
    above.
Unfortunately, alsaconf can only detect one  sound  card  and  is
    generally a poorly written program.
The  module  loader  configuration files just described are addi‐
tional to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa‐base which is shipped as  conffile
with  the  alsa‐base package.  The files contain basic configura‐
tion entries which don't normally need to be customized.  The en‐
    tries may include:
    *  ALSA  autoloader aliases * an entry for each normal sound card
driver that will cause a command
to be executed after the driver has initialized * an entry  for
each abnormal driver (i.e., a driver that drives
hardware  such  as  a TV card or modem that is not suited to be
    the
primary sound card) preventing it from grabbing index 0
Suppose you decide that you need to load a certain  driver,  snd‐
foo,  with  options: "dma1=0 ctlport=0x530".  The recommended way
to set this up is to create additional files in  /etc/modprobe.d/
    each containing an "options" line:
        # /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_local
        options snd‐foo dma1=0 ctlport=0x530
creating  device  files  ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ ALSA native device
    files are located in /dev/snd/.   (ALSA's  kernel‐  OSS‐emulation
device files are of course the same as the OSS device files.)
Udev  takes care of creating devices files when modules are load‐
    ed.
    reloading     modules     across      APM      suspend‐a
what shall I enter into, /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
Create /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf with the following contents:
    ## ALSA portion
    alias char-major-116 snd
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    alias snd-card-1 snd-usb-audio
    ## module options should go here
    options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=ref
    options snd-usb-audio index=1

ALSA  has  a  special built‐in module autoloading system.  You do
not have to make use of it, and it is useless if your /dev direc‐
tory  is managed by udev, but in case you do want to use it, here
is a brief explanation of how it is supposed to work.
When the "snd" module is loaded and the  user  tries  to  open  a
sound  device  file  with a minor number that indicates that card
number N is wanted, snd modprobes "snd‐card‐N".  Thus, if you set
up module loader configuration file /etc/modprobe.d/sound to look
    like this:
        alias snd‐card‐0 snd‐cs46xx
        options snd‐cs46xx index=0
then snd‐cs46xx will be automagically loaded when it is needed to
handle  the  attempted open() of the sound device.  The "index=0"
option ensures that when snd‐cs46xx is loaded the first card that
it registers is given index 0.
If  you  have an additional sound card of the same type then make
    the file look like this:
        alias snd‐card‐0    snd‐cs46xx
        alias snd‐card‐1    snd‐cs46xx
        options snd‐cs46xx  index=0,1
If you have, instead, an additional sound  card  of  a  different
type then make the file look like this:
        alias snd‐card‐0    snd‐cs46xx
        options snd‐cs46xx  index=0
        alias snd‐card‐1    snd‐emu10k1
        options snd‐emu10k1 index=1
ALSA supports up to eight sound cards.
The alsaconf program, available in the alsa‐utils package (in De‐
bian but not in Ubuntu),  performs  hardware  detection  and  can
write  out a module loader configuration file that looks like the
    above.
Unfortunately, alsaconf can only detect one  sound  card  and  is
    generally a poorly written program.
The  module  loader  configuration files just described are addi‐
tional to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa‐base which is shipped as  conffile
with  the  alsa‐base package.  The files contain basic configura‐
tion entries which don't normally need to be customized.  The en‐
    tries may include:
    *  ALSA  autoloader aliases * an entry for each normal sound card
driver that will cause a command
to be executed after the driver has initialized * an entry  for
each abnormal driver (i.e., a driver that drives
hardware  such  as  a TV card or modem that is not suited to be
    the
primary sound card) preventing it from grabbing index 0
Suppose you decide that you need to load a certain  driver,  snd‐
foo,  with  options: "dma1=0 ctlport=0x530".  The recommended way
to set this up is to create additional files in  /etc/modprobe.d/
    each containing an "options" line:
        # /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_local
        options snd‐foo dma1=0 ctlport=0x530
creating  device  files  ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ ALSA native device
    files are located in /dev/snd/.   (ALSA's  kernel‐  OSS‐emulation
device files are of course the same as the OSS device files.)
Udev  takes care of creating devices files when modules are load‐
    ed.
    reloading     modules     across      APM      suspend‐a
what shall I enter into, /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
Create /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf with the following contents:
    ## ALSA portion
    alias char-major-116 snd
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    alias snd-card-1 snd-usb-audio
    ## module options should go here
    options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=ref
    options snd-usb-audio index=1
and run 'alsa force-reload' or reboot.

  • After upgrading to itunes 7.3.2 system sound does not work

I recently upgraded my itunes to 7.3.2 and the sound worked for a short time. it then began to cut on and off until ceasing to work completely after a day or so. I have run diagnostics and my computer can produce sound, but not in any programs or any of the system sounds. i reinstalled windows xp and the sound worked, but when i installed itunes again the sound once again stopped completely. i have checked all the drivers, codecs, hardware etc. and they seem to be in order. what is going on?

I really struggled with this one and my IT people couldn't help.  They suggested that I add my secure corporate website to the Java Exceptions Sites, and use the Java client, but that didn't work.  I tried the CITRIX Native CLient (ICA Client) and that didn't work either.  So, I searched my Mac for all of the instances of CitrixICAClient, or anything else with ICA in it.  I then deleted all of those files, shut down Safari, rebooted my computer and tried again to log into my corporate site using the Native Client conenction option.  I remembered from years ago, that the first time you try to connect using the native client, that Citrix plugin is downloaded.  THat's exactly what happened and I haven't had any more problems.  So apparently, you have to clean up a little adn make sure that any "old" citrix products are removed.

  • [SOLVED] Make 2 sound sources into 1

What I want to do is take two sound sources (plughw:0,0 & plughw:1,0) and make them into either one plug or a whole new (virtual) sound card with a plug...
I am using ALSA (no PulseAudio, JACK or OSS), system updated to latest kernel, etc...
My goal is to have just 1 device that, when recorded, streams both System Sound and Microphone sound...
    Help is appreciated!

You might be able to do that directly with your recording software. ffmpeg should be able to do that with custom filter chains and the amix filter

  • Mac Pro makes no sounds

My old Mac Pro 1,1 does not make any sounds. When I open the Sound Control Panel and select the Output tab, The 'Select a device for sound output' mini window says 'No output devices found.'
I need a solution that does not involve reinstalling the OS. I have done that twice, and both times have lost my connection to all my old software (Adobe, Microsoft, etc.). Moreover, it scrambles my iPhoto Library which has a great deal of photos in its database. Does anyone have any ideas? There has gotta be something I can do, load some file or something instead of reinstalling the OS. Help!

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

Don't know why, but system sound has suddenly got too quiet. Volume set to max in sound prefs, and also in Midi sound settings.

  • MBP: no system sounds from internal speakers, other sounds fine

I have a 15" MacBook Pro (early 2011) running OSX Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Recently, I have noticed that it will occasionally stop making system sounds through my internal speakers following wake from sleep.
Playback from iTunes, Skype, internet etc seems to work fine, as does the volume increase/decrease feedback sound.
The problem persists until I reboot, then everything is fine again.
Not sure what's going on here, sometimes it will start playing all of the system sounds that had been saved up, i think it was when i pluged the headphones in. My Mac had been on for several days, and this playback took about 10-15 seconds of dings, beeps, trash empties etc to complete. From that point forward, things are normal.
It happens quite often and is getting really anoying.
Upon further testing I noticed that the system sounds stop (no crumple when emptying trash; no sent mail swoosh or iMessage pop).
I plug the headphones in and my machine makes all the sounds from the past several hours through the headphones. Again, things were fine from this point forward, whether I continued using the headphones, or unplugged and used the internal speakers.
Any ideas for things I can try to fix this?
Is this a hardware issue with the headphone jack?
If so, why would be stuffing up after a sleep/wake event ?

  • A tiny little cry for help: mic in bootcamp makes me sound like a mouse!

I posted this on the InsanelyMac forum, and I thought I'd post it here too because I'm just that desperate for help... thanks in advance for reading.
I run a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo. When Snow Leopard came out I installed it and partitioned my drive to allow me to run Windows via bootcamp for the purpose of playing Aion with my husband.
The game works fine, although it only works correctly when I'm hooked to my large Dell monitor. The built-in display makes the mouse/cursor not function correctly in-game.
But that's relatively minor... the biggest problem is that the built-in mic, as well as any mic I plug into the Line In, makes me sound like a mouse when I speak. I SO don't want to be known as the squeaky mouse over ventrilo. (The problem occurs in a regular sound recorder too, so it is NOT ventrilo specific).
The audio device is listed as Intel High Definition Audio: Device ID 0x83847680, Audio ID 30 - whatever that means.
When I dive into the Control Panel audio preferences when booted into Windows, the driver is listed as IDT audio.
Audio output seems to function perfectly.
I would sure appreciate help if anyone has expertise or experience with this sort of thing. I'm at a little bit of a loss.
    TIA,
    Jen

Hey, I had a thought, I don't know if it'll work and won't get the chance to find out until later tonight if I'm not too tired or until later tomorrow.
I think that if the IDT drivers aren't installed in the first place, perhaps the issue can be averted entirely. However, it's going to take a bit of knowledge to do and some patience. The partition will need to be remade entirely so that one may end up with a fresh operating system. When the SL disk is put into the computer, instead of running the full driver setup, pick the drivers directly off the disk by exploring its folders and only install the ones you need. Instead of using the IDT drivers, I believe the SL disk also has Realtek HD audio drivers (if I remember correctly from the last time I looked). My thought is that this manual method can prevent having to deal with the IDT drivers which I believe are part of the issue.
I understand that reinstalling XP is a process in itself, but this is the only solution I can think of. If manually installing doesnt work, my next move would be to use the drivers that come off the Leopard disk instead of the SL disk.
Like I said, this is just a thought I have so when I get to it later I'll let you know how it goes unless you decide to give it a try before me.

  • System sounds do not work since upgrade to ML 10.8/10.8.1

Hello.  Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I have the persistent problem of my system sounds not working, after my laptop sleeps.  Fresh after a restart, they will work..then, after screen saver or sleep, they will not.
    Here's what doesn't sound:
    - Apple mail sounds (sending, receiving)
    - alert sounds
    - Sys Pref -> Sound -> any/all sound effect selection
    - screen capture click
    Here's what always works fine:
    - the pop-pop-pop sound when I increase/decrease the volume
    - iTunes
    - any sound from audio/visual embedded in browsers
    - sound from all 3rd party apps
    Internal speakers are selected
No problem throwing out sound to airplay, etc.
No problem with non-system non-Mail sounds
All sounds work fine after a restart...but after a sleep or a screen saver, they will cease working until the next restart.
MacBook Air, 10.8.1 (also was noticed under 10.8)
    1.7 GHz, 4 GB
I do see posts where people are experiencing the same, but no real solutions.  I have found & trashed the prefs file (from other posting solution) but that did not solve this persistent issue.  The sounds always DO work fresh after restart...just after sleeping, they do not.  Thank you  :-)

Yeah, just to keep everyone breathlessly updated: there has been no fix for me.
Amusingly (mostly not..) on the plane yesterday, when I plugged in my headphones, I was greeted with about 3 weeks' worth of Sent Mail and Alert tones.   Good times.
The fix involving Audio MIDI Setup and momentarily changing the internal speakers integer dropdown list used to occasionally work for me...but lately it has not. I'm just making do with no mail sounds, like a chump.  How I wish GrowlMail worked with 10.8 because I could get my sounds that way.

  • Lag when system sounds play on Retina MacBook Pro

I have a problem on my Retina Macbook Pro (Mid 2012, running on 10.9 Mavericks) that has persisted for quite some time.
Essentially the problem is that whenever an application plays a system sound, the application lags for a few seconds. However, this comes and goes.
For an example of what I mean, the lag happens when I make the following actions:
    - Deleting a file in Finder (Trash sound should play)
    - Using a 'find' prompt in an app like Chrome, Xcode, TextEdit, and entering a string that cannot be found. That is, the lag occurs when I type the character that causes no result to be found. (Beep should play)
    - Pressing 'delete' (backspace) in any app's text field with no text present (Beep should play)
    - If I go to System Preferences -> Sound, and select a new 'alert sound' in the Sound Effects tab, the lag occurs and the Console prints "System Preferences[52828]: Error 268435460 setting AlertSound"
While my computer is in 'problem' mode, every single app is guaranteed to lag when these events happen.
But as I said, the problem comes and goes. It first happened after I had to reinstall one day. I think I screwed something up with preferences, permissions and such, because it took a while for me to fix everything up. But I don't think I quite fixed everything, because this problem started to occur ever since then.
The problem will appear for days or weeks at a time and then disappear for weeks. Just now I'm posting this thread because it had actually gone away for months, and just reappeared today. Nothing that I have found can explicitly start or stop this problem from occurring, it's seemingly random.
Does anybody have any idea why this would occur, and what can be done to fix it other than a complete clean reinstall?
    Thanks!

Sorry wrong post to this thread.
    Now the right post.
No OS X can not use all 8GBs of RAM when the Windows Virtual Machine is running. As long as the Win VM is up and running it take all the RAM you allocated to it. So if you allocated 2GBs of RAM to the VM OS X can only use the other 6GBs. As for the CPUs OS X can use all the cores and or Virtual core as all current Intel CPUs show as double the physical number of cores. So if you have a Dual Core i5 it will look like you have 4 cores. It's done with HyperThreading.
