Cmd-W closes window in Safari... or does it?!

Am I imagining it, or did Cmd-W use to close the active tab only?
Now when I want to close a tab, I hit Cmd-W and suddenly my entire Safari window closes.
I notice in the File Menu that Cmd-W is set to close window and there is now no keyboard shortcut to close a tab.
When did this change and why? Is there any way to get the old functionality back?

That's weird. On my verson (5.1.6) command-w still closes tabs. shift-command-w closes windows.
Of course, you have to have some tabs open...
If there are no tabs open (just a single window) then command-w closes the window and the File menu has "Close tab" greyed out with no keyboard shortcut.

I'm using a retina display MBP with mountain lion.
When I run the shortcut cmd-w (close window) on mac mail, it "unexpectedly quits".
Any ideas as to why, and how to solve it?

I have the exact same problem here on a 13"mbp.
Every time i click to close window or cmd-w mail quits right away.
Hope somebody has an answer.

Can't Close Windows in Safari

Because of some bad RAM, I had to do some system and software re-installs. I am running the latest version of Tiger, and windows in Safari will not close. They will go to the dock with the yellow button, but will not close with either the red button, the close window command in the File window or the command W combination. When I quit the program, the old windows go away, but that is a pain. I wait to quit Safari until I have 6 or 8 Safari windows open in the dock. Do I need to reset Safari? (I really don't want to lose the keychain passwords.) I've checked and re-checked preferences, and I don't find anything there, either.

Try a couple of things.
Clear the Safari cache.
Trash the Safari preference file (com.apple.safari.plist).
Restart safari and see what happens.

Shortcut to close window in Safari but the current?

I've been searching all over for this. I'm sure it s obvious ,but the words that I search are so common ,I get way to much info. Anyway I want to know how I can close all safari window but the currently active. Lets say there is 5 windows or tabs open but I'm only interested in the one I'm using now. I think I remember there being one ,if not I think U can make your own. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using the Close All Windows (⌥⌘W) shortcut does not affect minimized windows, so,
hit first the Minimize shortcut (⌘M)
to put your window in the Dock,
then Close All Windows.
The only window(s) left will be the one(s) in the Dock.

I have a macbook air running on OSX Lion, and I can't find the way to change the shortcut cmd+w...
I need those keys for another application without quiting it every now and then, and I can't add or modify any of those controls. Can somebody help me with this?

Thank you for the clarification. Customizing the folder icon,
open your picture you want on the folder with Preview. command -A will select all the picture, command- C will copy.
Open the info pane of the folder without opening the folder, highlite the icon in upper left of the info pane (command- i to open info pane,) and command -v will paste it.
Not all formats work if my memory serves me. PNG files ( like a screen shot) certainly do.

equation.
fyi.. Massimos Control Window does work in Safari to close
windows, so
there's something else wrong. Could be that you do not have
the supporting
function in the page.

I suggest that you run software update, after which you should have Safari 6.0.5 - then check Safari - Preferences - Privacy & see that 'Block cookies' is not set to Always.
Failing that - switch Safari extensions Off via Safari - Preferences - Extensions & test again

I want to perform some required set of actions before my extension window is closed(by clicking on the cross button on top right corner).
Does In-design throws any event for it? Or can we capture it using C++ plugin in some way?

Naah.......haven't got any event for that yet.
Although, since HTML extensions are using chromium browser, as a workaround, u can attach listener to HTML onClose event, but it won't solve any purpose if you
are looking to logout session or do some business login in your code.

I can't close one window in Safari.

I can't close one window in Safari. I'm on an iMac 27", OSX 10.9.4 and using Safari Version 7.0.5. I have several windows open - one with the header in grey (as they appear when not selected) and am able to individually close the other windows. The problem window has several tabs. I cannot close that window. If I try to select it, the top bar remains grey. I've quit and restarted, run disc utilities, run permissions and no problems show. At a loss how to handle this. I do not have this problem with Firefox.

From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

Hey who else experiences this problem?
When I have open publication (pdf) in my browser and press CTRL+W (to close a browser-tab/window) my Safari crashes. All my parallel pdfs/tabs are gone too and I have to open them again. This can be very annoying when you selected several specific publications from a list of 100+ papers on a journal's search result page.
Is there a fix out there?

Hi,
I did the full malware scan with the latest definitions. Everthing was clean.
Again I crashed the browser while i sorted out many papers from a list of search results... Here is the error report:

Shortcut for downloads window in Safari does not work

My shortcut for downloads window in Safari (command-option-L) does not work anymore, when i press that combination of buttons, iTunes appears in my screen.
Can i do something to bring back my shortcut?

Ok...
Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
Quit Safari.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Now launch Safari. Try the keyboard shortcut for the Downloads window. If it didn't help, just move that .plist file back to the Preferences folder.
Also, go to your Safari menu bar click Safari/Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset. Restart your Mac. That might help too.
