CMSS can cause for weird results. Please read this if you have surround issues

I'm a musician who frequently uses the Audio creation mode because this is the environment most optimal for creating music. For some time now, I've facing a certain problem where today, I finally found the solution about.
my problem
The problem I was having, is that some applications (they're optimised for stereo) played sound on my center speaker differently than those who use the windows 7 drivers. What happened in a nutshell, is that when I play sound in flash, the center speaker volume is about 3 times as loud as all the other speakers. Although this gives a nice and clear sound for presentations, this can be a pain when you want to listen to music.
my setup
For me, this is a bit awkward, because I have a big room where my speakers are positioned for my TV. My computer is next to my tv, but my center speaker is not in front of my pc monitor, but rather in front of my tv. Due to this, the right ear gets way more sound than my left one. Strangely enough, it weren't all the applications that had trouble with this. My music player plays everything equally throughout my speakers.
the mixer
The creative mixer (startup console) has several ways of tweaking this. Like assigning what channels to play if sound gets played through L/R, and their individual volume bars. You can guess it maybe. Changing these settings affected both applications differently. I could use the sliders to fix one, and then mess up the other. So when I went through all my settings I couldn't find what causes this.
CMSS is the fault here
I went reading this forum, and came to this post: http://forums.creative.com/t5/Sound-Blaster/How-to-enable-sound-for-my-center-rear-and-side-speakers-using/td-p/52 What gives, this option is not available when you are in Audiocreation mode. So it shouldn't affect my sound right? WRONG!
the problem
Even though you can't tweak the settings during audio creation mode, the settings are still in affect. So you have to switch to entertainment mode to access the CMSS-3D. I went there, and I had stereo enhancing surround enabled. When I changed that, it solved my problem. Since during audio creation, I mainly use stereo applications, I do not need surround enhancement.
my setup now
I turned it off, and as suspected, windows only parses sound to the left and right, not the other channels, even in audio creation mode. In the mixer, I have enabled output to all 7 channels I have for L/R output, and now the sound gets balanced to all my speakers. True, I get stereo sound over all the speakers, but when I want to use surround, I switch to the entertainment mode anyway.
Could a mod sticky this? I think its worth to have this stickied.

So my touchpad wasn't working and I have an HP dv6-6135dx. It started being messed up shortly after I took my PC apart to upgrade the screen. Sometimes it worked perfectly, sometimes it was completely unresponsive, sometimes the ring around the touchpad was lit, other times it wasn't etc.... It got worse and worse to the point where the touch pad almost never worked.
I followed this guide, and it didn't fix the problem; however, this got me thinking, and I pulled the keyboard out and reseated the touchpad cable where it connects right under there. BAM works perfectly. THANK YOU so much for this post, for some reason I didn't think to reseat the cable... I must have not plugged it back in completely when I took my laptop apart. You can find the service manual for the dv6t here Its in the first post

  • Please Read This if You Need Help Setting Up Email...

    Hi Everyone!
If you are hoping to use your Nokia phone for send and receiving emails you will need to set this up prior to use.
You may find that your phone has already been setup to send and receive emails by your network. This will be for the email address that has been provided to you by your network. If you would like to set up your phone for another email account, like your private or work email account, this will need to be set up by you.
The easiest way to do this is to order the settings from our site. You can do this from this link: Nokia Settings Page Here you can order all the settings you might need, to get your email settings click on Order Advance Settings and choose email when prompted.
Dont worry if you can't see your email provider in that list, if you have Nokia PC Suite installed you can connect your phone to your PC and configure your email account with some software.
If you have a 9500, 9300 or 9300i communicator you can go here: Nokia Configuartion Tool
If you have 3220, 6230i, 8800, 6810, 6820 or 6822 you can go here: Nokia Email Configuration Tool
If you have a series 60 phone like a 6680 or 7610 etc you can install the Settings Wizard from here: Nokia Settings Wizard. This application will attempt to configure your email settings for you. You will need a working installation of PC Suite to install this from your PC. If you are able to get the installation file on to your phone you will be able to install from there.
If your phone has not been listed in any of the above points, then unfortunately you will need to configure the phone manually. If you need to do this you will have to find out some basic information first:
    Your incoming server address
    Your outgoing server address
Do you require a secure incoming/outgoing connection?
    Do you need SSL?
Your email provider will be able to provide all this information, if you get stuck during the setup on what you should be entering for a setting, your email provider will be able to help you out.
Hope this is enough to help some of you out, any comments are welcome - just send me a PM.
    Cheers
    Karim

Road Runner is a pain at times to get to work on both Wi-Fi and EDGE. It seems as if their outgoing mail server doesn't like to roam. CWMX is ONLY for use on the cellular network, and if you plan on using Wi-Fi to send e-mails periodically, CWMX will NOT work.
My solution: Sign up for a GMAIL account, and forward your e-mails to the GMAIL account (provided POP access is enabled). Just log-in to this GMAIL account with your iPhone, and you'll get all your e-mails! If you need any help, let me know, I'll be glad to get you some directions.

  • Please read this before you load SECURITY UPDATE 2010-006

I've just spent 72 hours with frozen cursors and frozen screens - so far all directly related to security update 2010-006. After successfully using SuperDuper! to erase my Internal HD and load a 2+ week old system without security update 2010-006 I seem to be fine again.
OK I have so much share-free ware on my MBP-13" (May 2010) running 10.6.4 that maybe I'm the only one on the planet to see this - but there is a 214 PAGE post for MBP-15 and MPB-17's freezing -- prior to Security Update 2010-006 ------ related or not, don't know.
I believe I will actually get a duplicate MacBook Pro (or at least a MINI with the same chip/speed) so that I can keep one clean and experiment (i.e. download stuff) on the other. Then if a problem, my life doesn't stop. I realize that from banking to photos to news to work to reports to my balance sheet to SKYPE to eMail to....... wow, and in 1983 I just had my HP calculators!! These Macs just have to work!
Best of success and comments welcome here.

    11 Oct 2010

Thanks for the feedback! I think my system is now "OK" (hours of checks, with Apple as well etc. etc.) but likely there was a conflict - and since I don't know what - and since I can't remove everything right now - if this keeps working I just won't install the security update 2010-006.
BUT will this sneak up on me in security update 2010-007 or ??? I kinda have to get to the bottom of this - am actually thinking of buying a second, almost identical Mac (or at least a somewhat cheaper MINI 2.4 gHz) to have some backup beyond my external drives (which saved me!)
Thanks again and any/all comments truly appreciated.
    Best regards,

  • READ This if you have a Yahoo email access issues on iPhone

It's just (10:53) been confirmed to me over the phone with 02 iPhone support that there is an email server down at Yahoo which is affecting iPhone email access for accounts set up on your iPhone with the Add Account - Yahoo Mail wizard.
There is NO estimation for a fix time, but support advised you to access your email via the safari browser (if you are mobile) and web access during this down time. Just go to http://new.m.yahoo.com
    I hope this helps
Follow me on twitter and I'll post updates as I get them:

Thanks very much indeed for this, daccad. Would you mind if I pasted what you've written in the appropriate thread on the O2 forum?

  • Even if you're tired of the topic of blurry results, please read this

To be clear from the outset about the equipment I am using and my end goal, below is the relevant information:
    Camera: Nikon digital SLR
Camera Settings: Raw or JPEG Fine
    Image Quality: Vivid
    Television: 40” HDTV
Viewers: Bluray and one pre-Bluray DVD player that was purchased as part of Home Theatre Sound package.
Goal: the produce a slideshow/movie of the highest quality possible to be burned to disc and viewed on TV
Burn process: save iDVD as disc image and burn using Disk Utility – slowest speed possible (2x)
For the past 4 days I have been testing different workflows – all using share: export using QT > movie to Quick Time movie.
I have tried different compression types - DV/DVCPRO – NTSC, DVGPRO50 – NTSC, even PHOTO – JPEG, combined with different frame rates (either current or 24fps) and different scan modes (either interlaced or progressive). The constants throughout were Aspect Ratios (16.9), Dimensions (1920x1080) and Quality (Best). I also went back and tried iMovie HD.
All the results were disappointing: either the .mov file was blurry with jagged edges on images or the .movie file was reasonably crisp but became blurry when imported to iDVD. Strangely, the PHOTO – JPEG trial was excellent when I used a very short iMovie ’09 project, but the transitions and sound track broke down when I tried a longer project.
For my last trial these are the settings I chose:
    Motion
    Compression Type: H.264
    Frame Rate: Current
    Key Frames: Automatic
    Compressor
    Quality: Best
    Encoding: Best Quality (Multi-pass)
    Data Rate: Automatic
    Export Size Settings
    HD 1920 m 1080 16:9
Checked – Preserve aspect ratio using Letterbox
The .mov file looks great, but when I imported the file into iDVD, the transitions were jerky. The visual quality, however, is still good. I feel that I’m very close to getting what I want. If someone knows what settings I should have used to avoid the problems with transitions in iDVD please respond.
PS – I used a very short project for the above trial; the 20 hour export time for the iMovie project to .mov file for the 25 minute project I really want to burn was just a little too much. I have also used simply Share > export movie with very good results, so if all else fails, I will go back to that.

    Hello again Wayne,
Once again, I have to admit I had no idea what "key frame" meant or did. On my first trial using H.264, key frame adjustment was greyed out. However, after you helped me with frame rate, I set the frame rate to 29.97 and then key frame adjustment became available. Initially I chose every 10 frames (I got that number by reading information in iMovie help). The result wasn't totally satisfactory, so I did a little more digging and found the information below posted in Discussions.
_Key Frames_: Many compressors use “frame differencing” to compress moving images. Frame differencing is the process of determining what information has changed from a starting frame (called a “key frame”) to subsequent frames. *The key frame contains all of the information for an image. Subsequent frames contain only the information that has changed. Depending on the compressor you use, you can specify how often you want key frames to occur. If you don’t have enough key frames, the quality of your movie might be lower because most frames are generated from others. On the other hand, more key frames result in a larger movie with a higher data rate.* With some compressors, an additional key frame is inserted automatically if too much of the image has changed from one frame to the next. *A good rule of thumb for general use is to have one key frame every 5 seconds (multiply the frames per second by 5). If you are creating a file for RTSP streaming and have concerns about the reliability of the delivery network (as with the public Internet), you may want to increase key frame frequency to one key frame every 1 or 2 seconds.* To leave the key frame interval up to the compressor, select Automatic. For H.264, we recommend leaving the key frame interval up to the compressor; so you should choose “Automatic” for the best quality result.
In the end, I chose "1"; in other words, I made every slide in my slideshow movie a key frame. Every slide in my project is timed at 5 seconds or more and every transition is timed at 2 seconds or more. Using the information I have put in bold above, I reasoned that since every slide is 'on screen' for 5 seconds, the information to be processed is changing every 5 seconds making every slide a key frame. The result is good, but the export takes forever (my test project is about 2 minutes long and took over 2 hours to export.)
Obviously, I ignored the advice in the last sentence because I had tried 'automatic' and wasn't satisfied.
Later this week, I am going to burn my test project two ways - 1. using Share > Export Movie, which has worked in the past, and 2. the H.264 settings I have tested. I'm going to put them on the same disc and watch them back to back to compare. What I see will determine whether I put the time into H.264 or go back to process #1.

  • HP pavilion dv6 touchpad stopped working (read this if you have dropped your computer)!

Hello, this is not a question it is advice for people having touchpad issues with their dv6 (I've noticed a quite a few posts). My touchpad suddenly completely stopped working one day (didn't respond to anything that I did).
Most of the forums I've been to (actually, all of them... and they were many) ask you to try reinstalling the driver. However, if you did not recently uprage your OS or make any such major changes this is not likely to be the issue.
Try going to device manager. If your touchpad is not showing up under the mouse and pointer devices section (it should say Synaptics something or other) then it means that either something is broken OR your touchpad came unseeded.
For me, it was the second option (I drop my laptop... occasionally). The cable for the touchpad is held in place by a little plastic lever-like clamp. It can easily become loose, so try this out before taking your computer into a repair shop (and loosing it for weeks, not to mention the price if you're not under warranty!)
    Three easy steps:
    1) take the removable bottom cover off (that little plastic bit in the center where your hard drive is). For my model (6145dx), it just snaps off (with a flathead screw driver or other tool for leverage). You might have to unsrew a few things, but it should be easy.
    2) Take out the hard drive (held in place by 4 screws in most cases). You do not need to disconnect the cables leading to the hard drive! Just pull it out and lay it off to the side.
    3) Toward the very front of your computer (right under where your hard drive was, and where the touchpad is on the top cover) you will see the ribbon cables coming from your keyboard, touchpad, etc. Give them a little wiggle (just pull the plastic tabs that stick up. If one of them moves, then you need to re-clamp it! Push the cable all the way in and push down the lever.
Super easy! Should solve all your problems!

• Read this if you have the Looping Audio issue...

I was having this problem and it was driving me nuts. It would do it randomly everytime I used iTunes. I searched around the web but could not find anything related to this issue except for these forums.
What fixed it for me -
Go into your Sound preferences and look at the Output tab. Is the balance centered? Mine wasn't. It was moved a few notches to the left. This problem has been occuring for quite awhile where the balance will move by itself! I moved it to the center and have NOT had a single problem with the looping audio anymore.
Try it! Let me know if it works! =)

I had same problem not with XP but with Windows 7 beta. I posted online and a lot of people said Realtek this and Realtek that, it didn't work for me. I finally tried installing Bootcamp 2.1 and voila it worked. While it was installing drivers, I noticed bootcamp saying "Removing Realtek audio ... " then "Installing SigmaTel audio ... " few seconds later i started hearing all the bells and whistles of Windows 7. Woohoo!
I guess Realtek works for some people with various configurations but for me it was Siggy.

  • Ipod not connecting again, apple please read this.

First let me state that I made posts awhile back about my Ipod touch not being able to be recognized by itunes at all and just as a camera by windows. Now every single guide did nothing to help and the FEW people that posted had posted things I already did that did not help.
HOWEVER the version of Itunes that was prior to the one I just downloaded connected PERFECTLY with no issues.
But I just updates and wouldnt you know it, the connection problem is BACK. Apple please read this, the last version of Itunes had something different with how it connected to the Ipod...PLEASE bring that back, its so inconvenient not being able to connect to my own Ipod
If someone wants to post a reply that might help feel free...but everything on this website and even a few others not posted here have not worked, this is mostly me praying that Apple reads it...that tiny difference on how it connected made a huge difference with my computer.

Thanks. I worked out a simpler method of turning off the internet access - just switching off my wireless modem. Either way, this works and with the PC not connected to the internet, all three Apple devies will sync.
Thinking about it now, I had a similar problem a few versions ago which I recognised because with Home Sharing on and connected to the internet iTunes was trying to find files from someone in another hotel room who also sharing the hotel's wireless network. My devices would not sync then either. This seemed to be resolved with subsequent itunes upgrades until now ....
Thanks for the advice. Let's hope Apple's next 'update' actually updates itunes so it can sync Apple devices whilst simultaneously connected to the internet (not a big ask really).

  • Read this if you can't hear callers or voicemail o...

If you can no longer hear callers, cannot hear your voicemail, and are tearing your hair out trying to get any help from the obvious sources (your service provider, Nokia, your local store) - do not panic.
Call 121, as if you are making a vm call. While it is connecting, adjust the volume control button on the right of the phone. You will find that this volume control button operates on a 1-10 scale and is completely different from the one that is normally adjustable from the main screen, which operates on a 1-30 scale. Hopefully you will start to hear the recorded voice and all will be well.
This is not mentioned anywhere in the handbook or any of the online resources. I eventually found a clue via a different help site - but couldn't find where the 2nd volume control was. Thank goodness I eventually stumbled upon it by accident.
I know I am not the only one to have lost connection with a caller half-way through a conversation. It must be a design fault of some sort. I am just relieved that I did not follow the Nokia diagnostics advice to reset my phone to factory settings (after backing up etc etc), or pay out vast ££s for the privilege of sending off my phone for a non-existent repair.
I am not techy - but I am posting this in the hope that it will save others the frustration, expense and time I have wasted over the past 3 days trying to get any sense out of Vodafone and Nokia. (I am sorry if that breaches some form of discussion board protocol - but it is a fact.)
If anyone from Nokia is reading this will you PLEASE update your handbooks to include this information, and take account of it within your online diagnostics page, which told me to restore factory settings. (Fortunately I have no idea how to backup data on my phone, and the advice didn't tell me either.)
If anyone from Vodafone is reading this, will you PLEASE train your sales staff and helpdesk staff to understand this problem.
Feeling calmer now ... off to make a large mug of coffee.

This is normal an also the same with other phone brands and OS. Even on android and IOS the call volume is different from the general volume of the phone. If you have a non-lumia nokia phone, it is also the same.

  • Please read this on the Nokia Updater - Important ...

    Hi All,
Well - it looks like you have really taken well to the new Nokia Software Updater. We can also see that there is a little bit of confusion about the service in its present state right now.
So... We got an email from the NSU team that gives a bit more info on the topic:
The Nokia Software Updater checks which software is available for your particular phone by comparing the software you currently have with latest software assigned to the 7 digit product code of your phone. If newer software is available for your 'variant', it will be downloaded.
In case the Nokia Software Updater says no new software is available but you believe this to be incorrect, please post your product code to these boards.
    Many thanks for your help,
    The Nokia Software Updater team
Your product code can be found on the label in the battery compartment (e.g. 0501234).
So, if you do run into problems, it would be a really great idea to let Nokia know what your product code is. If you find yourself needing to call or email Nokia on the topic - please include this code so that our support teams can get straight down to helping you out.
Please do not forget, the Discussion Board itself is not here to provide direct support, so if you have an issue and post here the NSU team may see it, but they will not be able to get back to you directly. If you need one to one support - please get in touch via phone or email.
    Cheers

    Greetings everyone.
I contacted Nokia Support, and they sent me some info on how to get support locally some days ago. However, I plugged my phone again today and voila! to my surprise, it detected the new firmware and right now that I'm typing, I am updating to the new version.
I'm not sure but I think I should thank Nokia Support for registering my Product Code and certainly for responding to my request in quite a short time.
I should also thank all the other guys who gave me help on this issue, specially scoopyman.
