CMYK file size smaller then RGB... Why?

I have been receiving some very simple files from a colleague and her file sizes are a 10th of what mine are. The confusing part is she is sending them in CMYK and I convert them to RGB. Theoretically they should be smaller. Dimensions and resolution are exactly the same and both are 8 bits per channel and no color profiles. She might be using an older version of Photoshop than me (currently CS3). Anyone have any ideas?

These are uncompressed file sizes? My guess, given that you say how simple they are, and the 10:1 ratio, that she's using LZW compression or RLE compression on the file. Both lossless and should be fine.
>no color profiles
You should check with her to determine her working CMYK color space (in her PS color settings) and then assign that CMYK profile before converting to RGB. Then you want to embed your RGB profile or convert to sRGB and strip the profile before posting to the web.

  • How do I make a photo file size smaller? The photo is .jpg.

I need to make a photo file size smaller for some other uses.

Haha yes i forgot that you may not be using Apples Mail. Lets try the export then file>export, then under the heading "format" click JPG. Then click "scale images no larger then:" in the width field type "800" then the height field should change by itself. Thats what i do for emailing, it's usually the best trade between quality & size, that should be small enough to email. Best wishes JAG
P.S. when you first click "scale images no larger then" what's already in the width height fields? thats your actual photo resolution.

  • File Size Indication Mismatch.  Why?

After all this time with LR, I just noticed something puzzling that I have somehow probably missed an explanation for.
Why does LR show file sizes smaller than the actual file size. I have tif scans that are about 32megs that are shown in LR as 6 megs. Normally, I pay no attention to file size, but today I did. Is it that the size indication is for the preview maybe? Or, am I missing something basic here?

The size indication you are looking at is probably for megapixels. You can see the actual filesize in Lightroom in the metadata panel if you set it to "all" but I don't think you can show it on the badge in the Library grid display. A 6MP 16-bit uncompressed tiff should be about 36 megs, so close enough..

  • How can I make the pdf file size smaller?

How can I make the pdf file size smaller?

    Hi vickyb,
Reducing the file size of PDF requires Acrobat (one way is by choosing File > Save As > Reduced Size PDF). If you don't have Acrobat, you can try it free for 30 days. See www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html for more information.

  • Why Are Lightroom File Sizes Smaller Than Elements Equivalents?

I have been struggling to get good quality thumbnail sized images at small enough file sizes for a website. The only problem is that the versions I have done through Lightroom via the Web Module using the Flash template, will only allow a maximum width size of 191 pixels, whereas I'm looking to achieve 250 pixels wide. Doing it through Elements image resize box gets me the size I want, but for a decent quality, the file size is much larger.
Out of curiosity and for comparison, I made the Elements versions the same dimensions as the Lightroom ones. In order for the file sizes of the Elements ones to come even close and yet not as small as the Lightroom versions, I had to reduce the Jpeg quality to zero. This rendered them unusable.
I can't understand why two related applications doing exactly the same thing can differ so wildly. Can someone tell me what is going on?

    Hmmm??
    Not To Sure??
But I will try to find out..
    Keep you posted about that.

  • Why is my "Combined PDF" file size smaller than the original files?

    Hello!
I am trying to combine two individual PDF files into a single PDF. Each file is 32mb, however when I use acrobat to combine them, the newly created "combined" file is only 19mb. I believe I've taken the necessary steps to ensure no degradation is happening (i.e. selecting Large File Size in the options panel), but I am still puzzled as to how two files can be put together as one and be smaller than the two separate files with out any compression. What am I missing?
    Thanks in advance!

When you combine a file it does a "Save As" operation.  This re-writes all of the PDF object in the single file and is supposed to clean up the file, whereas the single files may have had multiple saves which when you look at the internals of the PDF file simply add on to the end of the file.  In other words you get a more cleanly written and optimized file that is also saved for Fast Web View.

  • How to make PDF file size smaller from an Illustrator file without changing the quality or size (length and width) of the file?

Is there a way to make a 30x42 size (40 GB) Illustrator file as a PDF but make the file smaller in size (able to email to clients) with out compromising the quality of the file or the size of the file?

If you are working in RGB you can embed a colour profile. Embed ICC Profiles is one of the Acrobat save options. It will increase files size dramatically.
When you save your pdf you can choose the compression method for placed images. Default is ZIP which is really no compression at all for pixel images. Instead you should opt for JPG compression (of varying degree according to how sensitive the images are to compression).
You should also examine the other Acrobat save options. To minimize file size you should not have any of the options checked (Preserve Illustrator Editing Capability, Embed page Thumbnails etc. etc.).
40 gigabytes for a file like the one you show is ridiculous. Did you maybe embed the placed images? If so, don’t. Keep them linked unless you really need to embed them.

  • How can I keep the file size small when I render a .mov file to video in PS entended CS4?

    Hi,
I haven't worked with video in Photoshop before and I am having the following issue:
I imported a .mov file into photoshop. I trimmed the file by moving the start and finish points to the relevant points on the timeline. I then cropped the image to get rid of unwanted footage on the edge of the screen. I then selected export - render video. On the panel I chose to select only "currently selected frames" as the range and I chose "Quick Time Movie" as the file type. When I check the properties of my newly rendered movie the file size has increased by several times. The file sizes are now much too large.
I know that I must need to alter some of the render settings but having tried altering many of the settings the result is always the same - a very large file size that is much bigger than my oringinal file.
If anyone can let me know how I can carry out a simple crop & trim on a .mov file and end up with a smaller more compact file after rendering the video I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

    Hi Marion,
Thanks very much for your message. I have downloaded that program and it's definitely handy for examining the details of the original file. You mentioned in your message about not having to recode the file - The file I'm editing is originally from a Q3 Zoom video recorder and I can use their in-built software (handyware) to trim the file - this doesn't recode the file and so the file size just reduces by the required amount. Unfortunately there is no facility to crop the file with this software - I've looked for other software that would allow cropping without having to recode the file but I haven't found anything suitable for a simple procudure like this - do you know of any software that allows you to crop a file without recoding? Thanks.

  • Editing PDF and keeping file size small

We are having lot of difficulties in keeping the PDF file small after editing. Our PDFs have text and fields and are used in a browser. They need to be updated multiple times a year to reflect change in text.
PDF was created from MS Word 2010 using Acrobat X.
Word had only Arial and Verdana fonts.
When PDF was created from word, settings were set to "Never Embed" fonts. Till this point, all seems fine.
Now, the moment we try to edit text (even add a letter), PDF prompts that fonts may be embedded and file size increases by 20-30KB.
Checking File-Properties-Fonts show that font has changed to "Arial, Bold  Type: True Type (CID), Encoding: Identity-H". Before editing, font type was not CID.
Under Optimization, there is no embedded font and we unchecked “subset all embedded fonts in optimization”. Save the file.
Still File size is higher by 10k-20K - though only one word was added.
    Questions:
How to avoid font type CID getting added automatically by Acorbat? It seems it takes more space and we don't need it. We couldn't find a way to remove/replace it.
How to keep the file size not increasing much? Every time we edit with only few words added and do optimize, etc. still file size increases by 10-20 KBs.
    thanks
    apjs

As these PDFs are used as electronic agreement forms and have fields/Javascript, recreating them from word requires lot of work. We do understand if there are substantial changes then we should recreate from word as PDF is not designed for major editing. However, in most cases we are trying to edit few lines of text and still file size is increasing by 10-20K.
We have tried Save As but so far optimization option gives us better results in terms of reduction in file size.
We do use common fonts - like Arial, Verdana, Times New Roman. We understand that we should embed uncommon fonts but we avoid uncommon fonts as embedding increases PDF file size.
CID is coming up even when common font like Arial is being used.
Thanks for trying to help us.

  • Optimize increases in file size by 5 times why?

    Hi All,
This maybe a simple question but please hear me out. I take footage on my Go Pro HD 2 in 1080p. I have the files on a network storage device total filles size = 79GB. When I import to FCPX I run my events from a 1TB thunderbolt connect drive into my imac 27 inch for editing. If I optimize the modia on import to convert from MP4 (which edits fine in native in FCPX btw) to Apple ProRes 422 then the file size increases from 79GB to 379 GB which just seems ridiculous? I did have colour analyze also checked, but can someone let me know if this is normal? I wouldn't expect the ProRes to be 5 times the size of the original?
    Thanks

Most modern consumer cameras shoot AVCHD or other very compressed footage.
This is fine for playback but the high compression puts a great strain on the processor during editing.
Turning it to ProRes 422 reduces the compression, so making it easier to edit but of course it greatly increases the file size.
When you have finished editing you can export the finished movie as AVCHD and once again it will be back to its original small size  .......  or even smaller.
You can of course try editing your native footage without optimising but you may get lots of dropped frames and stuttering playback etc. making the editing process tedious.
Try it and see  ........  you may be lucky if your computer is powerful enough.
    You don't need colour analysis.

  • How do I keep an Edge Animate banner ad file size small?

Most publishers cap the file size of banner ads at 30 KB to 50 KB. Is that possible using Edge? I know someone asked a question like this two years ago, and the reply was to use a CDN to serve the larger .js files. Is there a more direct approach now that Edge is no longer in preview? Thanks!

    Hi SGPGirl,
We were just forming what became the Edge Animate team two years ago, so many questions were asked at that time.  The 30k-50k ad standards were built with Flash in mind; HTML advertising standards are still emerging.  In the meanwhile, we are making a continuing investment to improve the form factor of Animate output.  Here are a few things we've done so far in "Publish":
    - Frameworks via CDN (for jQuery)
    - "Polite" preloader - this allows you to sneak-in under 30k size limits.  It shows a light-weight "preloader" and then pull in a larger payload after the page has loaded.  The preloader UI contains a meter that indicates the gzipped size of the preloader including its resources.
    - Compressed composition output.  When published, the animation (xyz_edge.js) is written in an efficient/compact form that shaves as much as 80% from the composition size.
I'd be grateful for your perspective on the "polite preloader" approach vs. trying to fit the entire composition into 30k.  If Animate were to support an "areo-gel weight" output format, what kinds of experiences would you expect to produce with it?  If you have any examples, please share!

  • Compressing photo size in iphoto - want file size small but pic big? how?

    Hello
I hope this is the right section for this post.
I am building a website and I want photos on it, I am building it in iWeb.
in iPhoto is there any way of making my photos a smaller file size?
I have cropped them a bit, but some are still about 400kb.
I want my site to load quickly.
I want a gallery page with thumbnails to click on to enlarge them, but on my home page I want 1 big picture. What is compression and can i do it in iPhoto? Can I still have a picture the same size (to look at) but the file size is smaller. I have heard photos should be about 30-70kb and mine are 400kb jpegs!?
Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   using iphoto and iweb, not hosting on .mac

    Betsy
I believe that iWeb optimises the pics when you publish the site, but you could confirm that on the iWeb forum.
If you want to reduce the size of pics using iPhoto, you do that on export: Select the pics you want and go File -> Export. Use the dialogue to specify the size of the pics you require and export them to a folder on the desktop.

  • Making PDF File Sizes Smaller

Is there a way to make the size of pdf files to be a smaller file size. The file sizes that you get from the print menu are too big. I know about altering the image size with the Automator script in PDF services, but this doesn't get them small enough. Is there another way without having to get a third party app like Acrobat, PDF Compress, or PDF Shrink? Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Barry

It does work, but not all that well.
Sample file size (photo, lo rez) in Photoshop Elements 3: 124K
    OSX created pdf: 484 K
OSX with "reduce file size": 156K
    OS9 file from Acrobat: 40K
Anybody know how to cut more fat out of these files, or am I going to have to go back to OS9 every time I want a reasonable file size?
