CMYK image in a PDF is involuntarily converted to RGB when you send from Acrobat Pro DC to Photoshop for editing

Hi,
When I send a CMYK image from Adobe Acrobat Pro DC to Photoshop CC 2014 to be edited, it opens up as RGB in Photoshop CC 2014. If I do the same with Adobe Acrobat XI on another machine, the image opens as CMYK, as it should normally do. As we had created the print-ready PDF in the first place, we know that the image is definitely CMYK and is properly opened in Photoshop if we use Adoba Acrobat Pro XI. We of course can go back to the original document and edit the linked image and re-export a new PDF. But on many occasions we need to do last minute corrections on images by editing them externally in Photoshop.
Best,
Refik Telhan

It's really necessary to know by which program you had created the PDF.
Here comes a test PDF for questions like yours, created by InDesign:
http://docs-hoffmann.de/riptest05072013.pdf
Different images:
sRGB, pRGB=ProphotoRGB, CMYK , all with individually embedded profile,
Grayscales: without embedded profiles, because InDesign doesn't embed gray profiles,
Lab: without profile, because Lab is automatically detected and not ambiguuos.
Of course, using so many different images in one PDF is useful only for tests.
An actual test:
Touch Up Object Grayscale and edit in Photoshop. There is no embedded profile
but the image is in PS detected as Grayscale. One has to assign a profile.
Re-imported in the doc, it is a Grayscale JPEG*, before it was a Grayscale ZIP.
In Acrobat 8 one can check the actual content of a PDF by
Advanced > Print Production > Preflight
In newer versions this is still available but somewhere else.
I'm using version 8, because I uninstalled X on purpose.

*Edited:
As far as I remember, there is no special code for Grayscale JPEGs, it's just a JPEG
with zeros in the Cb Cr channels ... like an R=G=B gray image.

If the PDF is a form fillable PDF, which I assume that it is, email it to yourself or send it to DropBox and open it on your computer. You should see the fields filled in there. It works for me if I do it that way.
Adobe Reader supports it, but the other apps don't. I assume that if you email the PDF to a computer user it would be readable in Adode Reader.

The InDesign CS created buttons I exported to PDF stop working when I apply security to not permit changes to document. The other bookmark type hyperlinks work. The external hyperlinks work. Just not the button types.
    Using Acrobat 6, OS X 10.4.11, Power PC G4.

Make sure you have updated Acrobat X to the latest version 10.1.3.  They updated the PDF plug-in in 10.1.1:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83708/attachments/Acrobat_Reader_ReleaseNote_ 10.1.1.pdf#page=4

Is there a setting I need to enable/disable?  I have the most current update.

  • Acrobat grayscale images editied in photoshop convert to rgb when brought back into the pdf file.

After I edit a photo using the object touch up tool in photoshop CS6 and bring it back into acrobat as a grayscale halftone all works fine till I print. It prints on multiple plates. When I edit it again in photoshop the halftone has turned into RGB. It happens every time. I assume there is a color setting in acrobat that is doing the conversion from grayscale to RGB but I don't know where to look. This has worked fine for years and has only recently stopped working. By the way I'm using acrobat pro.

  • PDF files opens in Adobe Reader  9 but not Adobe Acrobat Pro 9

After one of my users digitally signs a PDF file, and saves it, he cannot open it again.
He gets either a reference memory error or a Font Capture error.
I can open the same PDF file with Adobe Reader 9 and Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.
If  I take the same file to a system with Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 - same error on the same file.
Happens to my administrator account as well.

    Adobe Reader version: 9.4.1
    Acrobat Pro 8 version: 8.2.5

So the option was already checked when opened the document. I went ahead and unchecked, closed, reopened just to test and it's still not displaying correctly.
In response to Bill@VT. The image is on top of a white background so I can't tell if there is space there or not, it's just all white.
She showed me another document that's doing something similar today. This time the pdf was done with a green background and now the background shows as white. It was created the same way with Indesign and it shows fine in Reader and the Windows preview pane just not Acrobat. I'm trying to get the user to find the installation media so I can remove and reinstall, but I'm not sure if she will be able to find it.

  • "Cannot use adobe reader to view pdf in your web browser" error in Windows 7 and Acrobat pro 8.1.7

I get the error "Cannot use adobe reader to view pdf in your web browser.  Reader will now exit.  Please exit your browser and try again" in Windows 7 x32 and Windows 7 x64 with Acrobat pro 8.1.7.  This happens when trying to open  a PDF file in Internet explorer 8.0.760 or when I open a PDF in Quickbooks 2008.  If I answer ok or cancel the file opens normally.  If I open acrobat 8 first then the pdf files open as expected.  I also tried a copy of Acrobat reader with no difference in the outcome.  Since this happens on two different computers one fresh copy of windows 7 x64 the other an upgrade to windows 7 x32 and they used to work before the change to windows 7, I assume there is some kind of incompatibility with windows 7 and acrobat.  Is this a known issue and will it be fixed in an update to acrobat in the near future?

tvandersluijs - I'm sorry if that screwed up your machine however:
    1. What version of Adobe Reader are you using because as you can see the registry entry is for Adobe Reader 9, if ur using Adobe Reader 8 then u need to specify ur version as PAllens entry suggested - "E.g. "C:\Program files\Adobe\Acrobat [version]\Reader\AcroRd32.exe""
    2. I've used this solution significantly because I have come across this specific issue for multiple users.
    3. All the registry entry does is tell Windows what program to use by default to open/view PDF documents.
My intention wasn't to screw up ur machine or anybody elses as I said I've used this solution many times however what I've should gave is the disclaimer to backup ur registry before u make mods so u can revert back in case. Also the ony other thing I can think of is that this solution was for Windows XP using registry editior 5, I'm noticing that the title of this thread is Windows 7.

  • .PS file generating a blank PDF after upgrade from Acrobat Pro 7 to 9

    Hi All,
I've searched for this in vain so I'm comming to you now in desperation. My boss has tasked me with tracking down this error and I have to be honest, I'm a little bit green with Acrobat Pro. So coming into the situation I know this. My department used to use a .ps file to build a publication into a PDF from other .ps files. We operate on a network share (the P: drive) on Windows XP SP3 machines with the latest updates.
In Acrobat Pro 7 we could double click the  .ps file which executed the below code through Adobe Distiller and a  finished PFD of the same file name would be output to the host  directory. But now, after upgrading to Adobe Acrobat 9, this process  only produces a PDF with all of the appropriate bookmarks and none of the content.

    An observation -
It looks like you are dealing with files that reflect someone's work with the pdfmark Reference (associated with Distiller).
As with Acrobat Security, JavaScript and the Acrobat SDK the 'how-to' from these all undergo changes with each new Acrobat release.
I suspect that the coding, while adequate for back when Acrobat 7 was new on the street, may have to be updated to comply with what the Distiller provided with Acrobat 9 supports.
Use the link for pdfmark Reference
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/acrobat/wwdistiller.html
The Acrobat Developer Center ( http://www.adobe.com/devnet/acrobat.html ) provides a hub to the myriad of "under-the-hood" aspects of Acrobat.

How to export images using Acrobat Pro X v10.1.1?
This is a positive criticism: it was easy with Acrobat Pro X v.9.x. The new Acrobat interface without menus and submenus is awkward and utterly anti-intuitive. If it ain't broke don't fix it!!! Thanks.

  • Acrobat Pro XI transposes numbers for month and day in dates when saving optimized pdf to Excel spreadsheet.

Using Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and Excel 14.3.8 on a mac.
Saved PDF as "optimized PDF" then "save as other" > spreadsheet > Microsoft Excel Workbook.
Problem: numbers in some random dates are  transposed so that month and day are reversed.  No particular pattern to these errors.  Only fix we've found is to go through and manually check and correct the date errors - there are hundreds of these errors in the document so this is not a good solution.
(Note: Excel columns with dates are specified as "date" fields. All dates are formatted as m/d/yy)
Any ideas what's causing this problem problem and how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance!

  • How do I change the default PDF reader from Acrobat Pro to Preview?

Right now Acrobat Pro is set as the default PDF reader in my Safari 3. It's slow and wonky, which I think might be a 10.5 issue. Anyway I'd like to make Preview my default PDF reader for Safari but I can't find where to make this change.

    Hi Harry
You may also have to remove the Adobe PDF plug-in(s) from your Internet Plug-ins folder. If so, create a new folder in the Library where the Internet Plug-ins folder is located, calling it Internet Plug-ins - disabled. Move the file(s) to there. This way, if you need to use Adobe again, it's as simple as moving the file back, then reselecting the option in the Adobe app.
After so, restart Safari and try a PDF.

  • Acrobat Pro X freezes up for 10-15 seconds shortly after opening PDF

I believe my issue may be the same as or similar to http://forums.adobe.com/thread/867133 , but I'm not able to post to that forum.
Running Acrobat 10.1.2 on a fully-patched Windows 7/64 Bit system (Office 2010/32 bit). Antivirus is eSet NOD32 4.0.437.0. I've been having this problem for several versions of Acrobat Pro.
Frequently, when I open a PDF, Acrobat shows the document and is responsive to user action (e.g. scrolling) for a few seconds, and then becomes completely unresponsive for 10-15 seconds, and then is usable again. This happens fairly consistently. Even if I already have Acrobat open, opening a new file causes the same behavior.
Many of the comments on this sort of problem suggest security settings might be an issue.I have tried disabling Enhanced security, disabling "automatically trust sites from my Win OS security zones", disabling "verify signatures when the document is opened", disabling "load security settings from a server", also done "clear remembered account information" for LiveCycle Rights Management. Further disabled everything in advanced settings under Windows Integration. None of these changes have any effect on my problem.
Any suggestions for how to troubleshoot?

None of the writable forums seemed on point for a bug report/discussion. The only place I saw a similar discussion was in the read-only Acrobat Windows forum. Where would you suggest moving this discussion?

  • Bloated PDF files from Acrobat Pro

I was creating PDF's last night using Acrobat Pro 10.1.13. (Windows 7/64) and they seemed rather large, and not very good quality with compression artifacts. The originals were monochrome scans, which are OCR'd then saved optimized using the default settings.
I was doing a similar job about this time last year and the resulting PDF was 5,.2MB and the quality was excellent. I saved a copy of the file last year after the OCR stage. Reopening it now and saving "optimized" gives 24MB!!! (and poor quality). Saving as "Reduced File size" gave 10MB but rubbish quality.
I keep Acrobat up to date but didn't record when it upgraded. I used to use the optimize tool in the Tools panel but this disappeared in the upgrade to 10 (I think).
How can I get back to good quality and small files?
Message was edited by: Malcolm Storey (minor rewording for clarity)

Apologies guys & gals: silly mistake on my part: there's a little pull-down menu at the top right of the Tools panel. Clicking on "Document Processing" in this menu adds another section which includes the "Optimize Scanned PDF" tool. This is the one that disappeared. It gives the result I was looking for.

I have, in the past, converted .mov files to mpeg-4 with Quicktime Pro successfully, without quality being an issue. However, now the quality of the movie is grainy and pixellating. What am I doing wrong? Please help me. Thank you.

Sounds like a setting has changed on you. Have you done an upgrade of QuickTime? Have you exported a low-res version of something recently. My QT Pro setting always seem to default to the most recent settings.
Also, when exporting to .mp4, I find that the H.264 setting seems to work better...especially when I crank up the data rate.
    Hope this helps.
