CMYK images in single/2 colour layout - how to?

Using InDesign CS3, 504.
I'm creating a layout which will be offset printed either single (green and tints thereof) or 2 colour (the green+black and tints thereof) on white stock.  I'm a beginner single/2 colour user, and I'm not sure how I should deal with 4x CMYK images which need to be placed into my layout.  The images are company logos.  All images should be visible below as I inserted them into this post.
Should they be converted to tints of my single colour?  If so, what's the best way to do that?  And what format should they be?
Or if the client decides on 2 colours, what should I do?  Convert them to tints of black?  Would that be grayscale?
Any help much appreciated.

For a one-color job (technically "monochrome") you have two options. The easiest is ... set your text in black, and leave the images unchanged -- even if it's going to be printed in green! In that case, you should notify your printer the images should not be color separated. He will understand, and his machine will convert them to grayscale. The color comes out of a can, and it does not matter if it's green or black. You should make your own text black, because if you make it green, it will also be converted into a shade of gray.
The drawback is that you cannot show your client a correct PDF preview (and you might have to repeat this story to him).
The second option is convert all images to grayscale, using Photoshop (a breeze) or Illustrator (for vectors -- a lot more work). A word of warning: if you use the Photoshop "Convert to gray scale" filter, the actual image still stays RGB or CMYK. Do not forget to physically convert to grayscale in the Image -> Mode menu.
If you saved the images as grayscale, you can place them as usual in InDesign, and if you need them green, select the open arrow and click on them. InDesign reports its 'color' as Black; you can change it to green using the same swatch as you used for your text.
Two-color is a lot more work. You still need Photoshop and/or Illustrator, but then you have to manually change some parts to black (/gray) and others to green / a shade of green. You also need to take care only to use the same spot color green as you do in InDesign -- for Photoshop, you need a grayscale image with an added color channel.
Looking at the logos, it's virtually impossible to change them accurately into just two colors ... (the Acaster one being the exception). Personally, I'd advise a monochromatic approach.

  • Converting greyscale images to single spot colour

    Hi there.
    I’m trying to convert a greyscale image into a single spot colour image. The spot colour is PMS425C, a grey version but as I’m only printing 2 colours I need to convert these images into one spot colour.
    Can somebody please assist?
    Thanks

    Did you see the monotone separated into cmyk?  If so, you may not be making the PDF correctly and the spot is being converted. It can still have cmyk channels but they are empty and will not end up as plates.  Check your output to PDF settings and make sure in the ink manager that spots are retained.  Also, there is more than one way to view in output preview which can be confusing at first.
    You should be exporting as PDF X/1a and if your settings are correct, when you view in output preview (separations)  in Acrobat, you should see the spot as spot.
    Try saving your monotone as .psd too many other formats will not support the monotone.  If you view separations in ID, you will be able to see if your file actually supports spot colour.

  • Importing CMYK images - Mac CS5

    Hi There,
    I've searched the forums but turned up nothing (have noticed this a lot recently - is the search working currently?) so sorry if this easy.
    We do a lot of print AND a lot of web which means we have a lot of CMYK images in our image library. In Photoshop this is easily handled but when we import CMYK images into Fireworks the colours go crazy.
    Is there a way to import them and have them look correct?
    The default colour management policy for CMYK images in Adobe apps is: none - don't change values. Wonder if this is contributing to the issue?
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

    Thanks Linda,
    That's a real shame.
    I'm not after CMYK support in Fireworks but the color conversion Fireworks does is way off - especially for a CS5 app.
    Is Adobe trying to kill Fireworks off or something? It's been very buggy on Macs up until CS5 and seems to have some surprising gaps - like no colour management.
    I guess the safest and quickest way would be to do all our image libraries for websites in Photoshop.
    Thanks again.
    Cheers

  • CMYK images: strange monitor display & and printing

    I tried the way Pages 2 handles CMYK images today and found out some strange things.
    My problem: monitor display
    CMYK .jpg files are displayed inverted on screen like a negative - black is white and white is black. Layouting basicly rendered useless. Is there a work arround ?
    Solved: Printing
    For printing there are at least two ways to get a decent result. Here my findings:
    - Any color printers
    "Print - ColorSync - Color Conversion" set to "Standard" => CMYK images get converted to RGB
    "Print - ColorSync - Color Conversion" set to "Printer specific" => CMYK images stay in CMYK if printer is able to print CMYK
    - use "Save to PDF" within printing dialog
    Same as above, profiles tagged to images stay correct
    - Adobe Acrobat Distiller
    Same as above, but PDF looses recognizeable profile information. PDF workflow software does not recognize "SWOP" or "ISOcoated" by name but has "Embedded Adobe Postscript CRD Profile" instead which will create problems in workflow processing.
    - Exporting "File - Export - PDF"
    Profiles stay intact and are handled correctly.
    Cube, PB 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Thanks Noel for the reply. Hopefully  this will help.
    This is how the file should look like.
    This is how the file usually displays.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • CMYK Images and Save as Word

    I'm having an issue with CMYK images in Pages when saving my document as a Word Document. The images look fine in Pages, and any exported Pages format (document or template), but when I save as a Word Document and then open the saved file, the colors aren't appearing correctly.
    Has anyone run into this, and if so, is there a fix?

    Jerrold Green1 wrote:
    Have you noticed that you can create a color in the Colors Pane with the CMYK sliders, and upon going back to that color and checking it with the magnifying glass, the settings will have changed? You can find this in both Word and Pages. With HSB or RGB generally there is no change, and sometimes one component will change by one digit, but nowhere near the difference I've seen in CMYK.
    I'm left wondering if the resolution of the color mapping for CMYK in OS X is coarse or if this could be a graphics chip issue, or something else altogether.
    No, I have not noticed that particular case, but there are cases when the numbers will change. The most obvious case may be when you click on the little icon below the magnifying glass in the sliders color palette. When you change colour profile, the numbers will understandably change. Could it be that when you noticed this shift, you could have different colour profiles loaded due to something - different images loaded or something?
    Anyhow, I do not think that has anything to do with the problem of Dave here. When you open the jpegs in Word, the colours are more or less completely inverted. I think it is something like C -> R, M -> G, Y -> B and K is either ignored or inverted. It is not a slight shift, but the values are completely changed.

  • Problem in Saving Images in Single Folder in Nokia...

    I want to know how to transfer images keeping it in folder. I connect my E63 with USB.I copied my "Photos" folder from my laptop,then opened "File Manager" in Nokia PC suit. There I get 2 options. 1)Memory Card 2) Phone Memory.I select memory card, In that I opened Images Folder which is default in Memory card. I paste My "Photo" folder here in "Images" folder in Memory Card.After disconnecting my phone from USB cable when in my E63 I open Media->Gallery->Images I can see all my images of that folder differently and not in a single folder "Photos" which i pasted.So what should I do?I want all images in folder as I copied and pasted. Am I suppose to create new folder manualy in Phone's Media Gallary?But in phone when I go to Office->File Manager and browse through Images folder of Memory card, I find all images in same folder "Photos" which i pasted(copied), but in Gallary->Images i find all images seperately and not in folder. What should I do? Please help me.

    Hey bro thanks for reply..My main purpose for asking this question was related to xplore only. I tried xplore on my E63. When we hide folder by xplore, we browse through file manager.I mean xplore shows Folders that are in File Manager.After Hiding folder, when I go to Gallery->Images, all the images in folder which I have made hiden, are visible,but...but....all the images are converted in one images. Let me explain, Suppose my folder contains 15 images named IM1,IM2,IM3....IM15. ok. After hiding folder in gallery when i See, there are total 15 images but all are IM1.Again when I unhide folder, its normal. I also tried ticking system option along with hide option in Attributes of xplore as someone suggested me to do so.But didn't worked. My main purpose for asking to move all images into single folder was this only.I didn,t knew you too would be using xplore or else i would have directly asked you this question only.
    Thanks.

    hi all
    i am doing a project in java where i need to convert 10 jpeg images into a single tiff image..conversion of single jpeg image to single tiff is happening but embedding all the 10 jpeg images into a single tiff is not happening..i hav tried out with single image conversion..
    My code is
    import java.awt.image.BufferedImage;
    import java.io.File;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import javax.imageio.ImageIO;
    public class Convert
    public static void main(String[] args)

    File out = new File("b.tiff");
    BufferedImage bufi;
    try
    bufi = ImageIO.read(in);
    ImageIO.write(bufi, "tiff", out);
    catch (IOException ex)
    ex.printStackTrace();
    can anyone pls help me how to do that
    thanx in advance

    Make a Buffered Image large enough to handle the size of the final image... say you have 10 jpegs each 100x100, and you want them in a configuration with 5x2... 500x200.
    Once you have the images loaded and the new BufferedImage, just paint them into the appropriate (x, y) value of the graphics context of the image.
    g.drawImage(image1, 0, 0, null);
    g.drawImage(image2, 100, 0, null);
    g.drawImage(image3, 300, 0, null);

  • Color correct CMYK Image with RGB Image

    1. anybody please tell me is it possible to perform color correction in CMYK image with RGB reference image
    2. how to do that i mean what are the details i have to watch for?
    ADVANCE THANKS

    Your match using my color profile(similar to North American General Purpose) would be 29c 100m 83y 35k. Convert a sample swatch, using your color workflow/profile.
    Some RGB colors won't convert well to cmyk (eg 0R 255B 0G). In that case your problem is not using a RGB reference image for CMYK color correction, but the cropped color gamut in the color conversion itself.
    In those cases of saturated RGB colors you may have to do some handtoning to surrounding colors, to help create the illusion of RGB saturation to the troublesome color you are matching.

  • Problem in Loading Multiple image in Single Sprite/MovieClip

    Hi All,
    I am having a killing problem in loading multiple images in single movie clip/sprite using a separate class.
    Here is the ImageLoader.as class
    package com.project.utils{
        import com.project.*;
        import com.project.utils.*;
        import flash.events.EventDispatcher;
        import flash.display.MovieClip;
        import flash.events.Event;
        import flash.events.ProgressEvent;
        import flash.display.Loader;
        import flash.events.IOErrorEvent;
        import flash.net.URLLoader;
        import flash.events.MouseEvent;
        import flash.net.URLRequest;
        import flash.display.Bitmap;

            public var imgloader:Loader;
            public var imgMc:MovieClip;
            public var imgObject:Object;

                var image:Bitmap = Bitmap(Evt.target.content);
                try {
                    imgMc.removeChildAt(0);
                } catch (error:Error) {
                imgMc.addChild(image);
                try {

                        imgMc.buttonMode = true;
                        imgMc.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onImageClicked);
                        imgMc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onImageClicked);
                } catch (err:Error) {
                dispatchEvent(new CustomEvent("CustomEvent.ON_IMGE_LOAD"));
            private function onImageClicked(evt:MouseEvent):void {
                trace("Image Attrs:"+imgObject.URL +" Target "+imgObject.Target);
            private function onImgLoadProgress(Evt:ProgressEvent):void {
                if (Evt.bytesLoaded>0) {
                    loaded = Math.floor((Evt.bytesLoaded*100)/Evt.bytesTotal);
                    dispatchEvent(new CustomEvent("CustomEvent.ON_IMGE_LOAD_PROC",loaded));
            private function onImageLoadFailed(Evt:IOErrorEvent):void {
                trace("Image Loading Failed");
                dispatchEvent(new CustomEvent("CustomEvent.ON_IMGE_LOAD_FAIL"));
    Here I am loading some images using the above class in a for loop, like
                for (var i=0; i < 3; i++) {
                    //imgLoader=new ImageLoader;
                    imgLoader.addEventListener("CustomEvent.ON_IMGE_LOAD",onImageLoad);
                    var target:MovieClip=videolist_mc["list" + mcCount + "_mc"];
                    target.list_mc.visible=false;
                    var imgObj:Object=new Object;
                    imgObj.FilePath=list[i].Thumbnail;
                    imgObj.Url=list[i].Url;
                    imgObj.Target=list[i].Target;
                    target.list_mc.urlObj=new Object  ;
                    target.list_mc.urlObj=imgObj;
                    imgLoader.loadImage(target.list_mc.imgholder_mc,imgObj);
                    target.list_mc.lable_txt.htmlText="<b>" + list[i].Label + "</b>";
                    target.list_mc.imgholder_mc.buttonMode=true;
                    target.list_mc.imgholder_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,onItemPressed);
                    mcCount++;
    In this case, the ImageLoader.as works only on the last movie clip from the for loop. For example, if i am trying to load three image in three movie clips namely img_mc1,img_mc2 and img_mc3 using the for loop and ImageLoader.as, I am getting the image loaded in the third movie clip only img_mc.
    See at the same time, If i uncomment onething in the for loop that is
    //imgLoader=new ImageLoader;
    its working like a charm. But I know creating class objects in a for loop is not a good idea and also its causes some other problems in my application.
    So, help to get rid out of this problem.
    Thanks

    Is it possible to create a single texbox? and how to delete a button on a form? please asap, badly needed it right now. thx -regards gustavo

    Hello Gustavo,
    You can create a single textbox using the textbox option here (This is for you to enter text - not for the visitor): http://jingsite.businesscatalyst.com/jing/2013-09-30_2212.png
    If you want to create a textbox for the visitors to enter text, then you need to enter a form, and you can delete the "message" field from the "simple contact" form, but not the name and the email fields (those are mandatory and can't be deleted).
    You may want to check external forms in case you want to have the form rather customized, to check if you can have forms with single textbox. An example would be "Jotform".
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers

    Yes, the printer is on, it’s selected in Printer Set-Up & I’ve never had this problem before. It’s definitely a Photoshop issue as every other type of file prints fine. I’ve uninstalled Pshop & am now reinstalling. Hope that will do the trick.

  • CMYK image in a PDF is involuntarily converted to RGB when you send from Acrobat Pro DC to Photoshop for editing

    Hi,
    When I send a CMYK image from Adobe Acrobat Pro DC to Photoshop CC 2014 to be edited, it opens up as RGB in Photoshop CC 2014. If I do the same with Adobe Acrobat XI on another machine, the image opens as CMYK, as it should normally do. As we had created the print-ready PDF in the first place, we know that the image is definitely CMYK and is properly opened in Photoshop if we use Adoba Acrobat Pro XI. We of course can go back to the original document and edit the linked image and re-export a new PDF. But on many occasions we need to do last minute corrections on images by editing them externally in Photoshop.
    Best,
    Refik Telhan

    It's really necessary to know by which program you had created the PDF.
    Here comes a test PDF for questions like yours, created by InDesign:
    http://docs-hoffmann.de/riptest05072013.pdf
    Different images:
    sRGB, pRGB=ProphotoRGB, CMYK , all with individually embedded profile,
    Grayscales: without embedded profiles, because InDesign doesn't embed gray profiles,
    Lab: without profile, because Lab is automatically detected and not ambiguuos.
    Of course, using so many different images in one PDF is useful only for tests.
    An actual test:
    Touch Up Object Grayscale and edit in Photoshop. There is no embedded profile
    but the image is in PS detected as Grayscale. One has to assign a profile.
    Re-imported in the doc, it is a Grayscale JPEG*, before it was a Grayscale ZIP.
    In Acrobat 8 one can check the actual content of a PDF by
    Advanced > Print Production > Preflight
    In newer versions this is still available but somewhere else.
    I'm using version 8, because I uninstalled X on purpose.
    Best regards --Gernot Hoffmann
    *Edited:
    As far as I remember, there is no special code for Grayscale JPEGs, it's just a JPEG
    with zeros in the Cb Cr channels ... like an R=G=B gray image.

  • Upgraded to Creative Cloud from elements 9 where images are stored in Organizer.  How do I bring them into Creative Cloud and should I download them to Lightroom, Bridge, or Photoshop itself?  Any suggestions?

    It's important to keep in mind that the picture files are NOT stored in the Organizer. They are not stored in Lightroom or Bridge either...
    The organizer is based on a catalog which stores the pictures properties, mainly the location of the pictures on your drive(s). It's the same idea of catalogs in Lightroom, and the nice thing is that Lightroom can convert organizer catalogs to its own format. The most obvious way for you will be to use Lightroom.
    Bridge is a file browser which is a different way than to use catalogs.
