CMYK swatches in CS4 Kuler palette?

Wondering if I'm missing something...
As a print designer, I love Kuler and having the ability to access Kuler through the Creative Suite. I've recommended the site to many of my co-workers and they've been using it too, but I have strong reservations about recommending it to any of our clients. With only RGB sliders available, when I add selected colors to my Swatches Palette in InDesign, they are all in RGB - not CMYK, which is what I need for printed design work. While my co-workers and I certainly know that we should take the step to change these RGB colors to CMYK, we are often working with novice clients who do not understand how to work with color (what we all jokingly refer to as the "camera ready" files). I'd rather not have to spend time cleaning up their files, so I don't tell them about Kuler even though I'm sure many of them would find it helpful. Perhaps I'm missing a crucial step myself, but I haven't seen a place where I can switch to CMYK sliders in the Kuler palette inside InDesign and/or load CMYK colors into InDesign. When I do web design in Flash and Photoshop, the RGB is great, as are the Hex values, but print isn't dead yet. Would it be possible to add this function? While we're on the subject, any chance of adding Pantone colors? I know that probably involves some licensing, but for print designers who still use Pantone colors on a regular basis, this could be a great help. Any print designer will tell you that Pantone has been around for a long time for a reason - Pantone color mixtures are predictable on press. Mixing up CMYK colors on your own can have interesting and sometimes unfortunate results. Thanks for a great site. Looking forward to further developments!

I was there 5 mins back, then realized the below.
Solution:
Once you have made your Kulercolors/theme add them to your swatches, when the colors are in the swatchespanel selectnewcolors that are in RGB > go to swatch options > change color mode all at once to what you need.

  • Photoshop CS4 layers palette too wide problem!

    http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/6828/swatchesld2.jpg
    The Photoshop CS4 layers palette is too wide and distorts the layout of the default color swatches palette when docked on the same column. And I don't want to have to put the color swatches palette anywhere else but the same column. Can the layers palette be fixed so that it can be as narrow as the other palettes, so it won't cause a conflict with the swatches layout?

    As for the rescalability of panels I think this is more of a Windows issue, but even on mac these are nowhere near as well designed as they were.
    Panel and UI design issues are now unfortunately more complex than just to do with Photoshop. The whole Creative Suite is now unified to some extent in the way it handles panels. Part of these problems stem from the fact that Indesign and Illustrator's concerns are quite different to those of Photoshop. Partly because the designers of these two applications have introduced a great swaithe of additional panels, which now need to be accomodated. Hence the panel buttons, and poorly docking panels.
    The design of The Creative Suite interface now seems much more influenced by Flash Web design, and Windows OS. Unfortunately with flashing buttons, icons, and distracting transparency whenever you move anything, Photoshop appears on the surface much more complex than it needs to. This surface complexity will lead to further misguided accusations of "bloat".
    Photoshop CS and CS2 in my humble opinion, had much more "solid" and well designed panel (or palette) interfaces. Although here and there there have been one or two useful additions to the overall UI, including more readily accessible workspaces, tiling, and obvious clickable icons for people who can't deal with keyboard shortcuts.

  • CHANGING DEFAULT CMYK SWATCHES TO RGB

    I've been looking for a way to change the default CMYK swatch to RGB.  I've tried everything.  CMYK colors - even black ARE NOT ACCURATE.  Help?

    you just need to change the profile when creating new document
    CMYK is Accurate, when printing CMYK!
    RGB is Accurate, when displaying in RGB!
    colour is a complex thing.

  • Exchange RGB swatches with CMYK swatches

    Using ASE color swatches I am trying to figure out how to change the swatches in an existing document. Here is the scenario:
    We have created 2 custom ASE swatch panels, one Spot RGB and the other Spot CMYK. Both panels have the colors named the same. When I open an existing document that uses the CMYK swatches and try to load the RGB swatches using the Load Swatches pull down in the Swatches panel, InDesign will only update the unused colors. And it will not load the other RGB colors as copies. I have tried to start with the ASE RGB swatches pre-loaded into InDesign, but when I open the document, all those colors are replaced with the swatches used in the CMYK document. So, I cannot delete the swatch and replace it with the copy. Does anyone know how I can get around this problem? We want to be able to use different colors for web and print and we want to have a way to be consistent across documents and Adobe applications.
    Adobe InDesign CC
    Mac Os X 10.8.4
    iMac 27" 3.4 GHz Intel Core 7
    32GB memory

    Keep the document in color mode CMYK.
    Open the RGB image in photoshop, and convert to CMYK.
    Sample in Photoshop the color you need and write that down.
    Go to Illustrator and create a swatch with the color you wrote down.
    You cannot accurately sample colors from placed photos in Illustrator . Illustrator takes what is sent to the screen in RGB, and then converts that to your color mode. Do NOT use SHIFT eyedropper, though the color looks good your color will not match the CMYK values in your photo.
    Illustrator will not change your cmyk document color mode colors to RGB because you sampled with eyedropper. You most likely changed the mode of the color panel to RGB. The color panel should always match the color mode of your document, the panel is misleading otherwise.

  • FW CS4 Kuler Extension: How to import priate palette?

    Hi everybody,
    using the kuler extension to FW in CS4 I only see public
    color themes. Am I missing where I can log on to see and import my
    private color palettes? Or is there a way to import the exported
    ASE file from the kuler AIR application into FW? I think a similar
    question was asked concerning CS3 before.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thank You Darrell,
    this video was the most instructive one that I have seen
    about the new color handling features of FW. But the problem of
    private palettes not being accessible within the Kuler extension
    remains. For the time being I will live with the necessitiy either
    to publish any theme in Kuler I wish to import into Fireworks later
    or to manually color pick the swatches from the AIR application.
    What makes me feel unhappy this way is that everybody with the same
    intention is being forced to somehow "pollute" the Kuler commmunity
    with intermediate palettes. Yes, and why can't these ASE files
    being used by FW? Ok, I guess I want too much.
    Cheers

  • CMYK swatch problem- new documents

    Hi When I open a new document in CMYK my swatches in swatch palette are showing as RGB. How do I get them back to CMYK? My colour mode is ticked as CMYK. I have rebooted and reset my workspace to my saved setting but it still doesnot default my swatches back to CMYK. Please help.
    Thanks Sue

    Sue,
    It may be time for the list, then. Presumably, you have been through 1) - 2), and I believe it is better to start with 4) and go straight to 6) if needed.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
    External media: It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk, and it is better to be safe than sorry.
    In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:

  • Need help deleting unused swatches in CS4

    I upgraded from CS3 to CS4, and simultaneously switched platforms from windows to mac osx. Now I can't find the option for deleting all unused swatches in the swatch palette menu and I'm starting to feel insane because I've run several searches and no information about this is popping up anywhere. Can anyone help?

    That's one way, I guess. But in CS3 I was able to select all unused swatches and then drag them to the trash. That way I could still have my default swatches for new projects. But I guess this feature was removed for CS4?

  • How do I switch between the tint slider and CMYK slider under the colour palette?

    I have a number of process colours loaded in my swatches palette and when I select a colour and have the colour palette on show it defaults to the tint slider. I have the option from the flyout to change to CMYK but when I do this how do I change back to the tint slider?

    Once you edit the color of the object in the Color panel using the sliders you no longer have the swatch applied because you've change the color as a local override. You could add the new color to swatches, or if your intent is to globally change a swatch you sould do it in the swatch definition dialog.

  • Kuler palette IndesignCS3

    I've made a couple kuler themes and imported the .ase files into Indesign CS3; now they appear in every new ID document. Is there a way to disable them without manually deleting the colors from the palette in each new file? I don't want them in every new ID file. Maybe it's a CS3 issue; does kuler work differently in CS4?

    You probably added the colors to InDesign without any documents open -- doing anything in InDesign with no documents open becomes the default setting for all new documents. To fix the problem, launch InDesign but make sure no documents are open. Then delete the colors you imported from the kuler .ase files.
    Things are different in CS4 -- InDesign CS4 has a kuler panel, which allows you to load colors directly into InDesign from Kuler without the need for downloading .ase files.

  • Script to apply a random CMYK swatches from a group of swatches to selected objects.

    I would like to write some scripts for randomising the allocation of swatches to adjacent object.
    Example:
    Imagine a map of Europe and all her nation states/territories. I have a User Defined Swatch Library. I can open the AI document it was made from as I understand from this thread that having the swatches as objects on the page makes them easier to be referenced in a script.
    I want to iterate through the selected objects and randomly assign one of the colours in the swatch document as a fill to each object. It would be great if hidden swatches (they are all small rectangular 'colour chip' filled paths) on page were not included in the reference swatches randomly choosen from.
    Iterating the selected objects I can do, but not sure what references I need to use to create an array of swatches to randomly choose from.
    I see I can make an array of swatches using the general swatch group from Adobe's CreateSwatchGroup scripts:
    JS
    var docRef = app.documents.add(DocumentColorSpace.CMYK)
    // Create a new SwatchGroup
    var swatchGroup = docRef.swatchGroups.add();
    swatchGroup.name = "CreateSwatchGroup";
    // Get list of swatches in general swatch group
    var genSwatchGroup = docRef.swatchGroups[0];
    // Collect 5 random swatches from general swatch group and move to new group
    var i = 0;
    while (i < 5) {
              var swatches = genSwatchGroup.getAllSwatches();
              swatchCount = swatches.length;
              var swatchIndex = Math.round(Math.random() * (swatchCount - 1)); // 0-based index
              // New swatch group does not allow patterns or gradients
              if (swatches[swatchIndex].color.typename != "PatternColor" && swatches[swatchIndex].color.typename != "GradientColor") {
                        swatchGroup.addSwatch(swatches[swatchIndex]);
                        i++;
    // Updates swatch list with swatches moved to new swatch group
    swatches = swatchGroup.getAllSwatches();
    // [… etc etc]
    AS
    tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
    activate
              set docRef to make new document with properties {color space:CMYK}
    -- Create a new SwatchGroup
              set swatchGroupRef to make new swatchgroup in current document with properties {name:"CreateSwatchGroup"}
    -- Get list of swatches in general swatch group
              set genSwatchGroup to swatchgroup 1 of docRef
    -- Collect 5 random swatches from the general swatch group and move to new group
              set i to 0
              repeat until i is 5
                        set swatchesRef to get all swatches genSwatchGroup
                        set swatchCount to count every item in swatchesRef
                        set swatchIndex to random number from 1 to swatchCount
                        set currentSwatch to item swatchIndex of swatchesRef
      -- New swatch group does not allow patterns or gradients
                        if class of color of currentSwatch is not pattern color info and class of color of currentSwatch is not gradient color info then

                                  set i to i + 1
                        end if
              end repeat
    -- [… etc etc]
    If someone can help me to create the Swatch Array object of swatches loaded from a seperate document (or unique layer) then I think I can work my way to changing the fill on the existing paths (the nations in my map of Europe example).
    Would be very cool if I could detect neighbooring paths (nieghbooring nations in my map of Europe example) make sure the colour being assigned is not within a certain hue/CMYK range of the random colour and if it is rechoose random colour. I have no idea how to perform the logic of determining neighbooring paths in an Illustartor script. Anybody?!
    I'd prefer Applescript for sake of readiblity and also I'm learning AS ATM. Plus I'm using Script Debugger.app (which is excellent) to work with AS and I can't seem to run JSX scripts from within Extend Script Toolkit 2 (perhaps I need to make my scripts point to Illustrator?)

  • InDesign CS4 Hyperlinks palette is blank

    I want to add hyperlinks to an InDesign CS4 document. I selected some text, opened the hyperlinks palette, and ... there are no UI elements showing on the palette. It's just completly empty or blank. Yet the instructions tell me to click on the link icon etc.
    Have pity on me if I am missing something really really obvious here. But what's up?
    Thanks for your time.

    Thanks both! I reset the preferences per Adobe's instructions and the panel is now working. I was worried that my custom workspace would be lost but it survived.
    Also, a comment for Windows users -- the directions say:
    (Windows) Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
    (Mac OS) While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
    I thought this wasn't working but found that it works fine if you press Shift+Ctrl+Alt IMMEDIATELY as the app begins to load (don't wait until it's up and running).

  • Illustrator CS4 Action Palette bug

    Does anyone know if the action palette bug has been addressed? I saw a thread from Nov 2008 that confirmed I am not an isolated incident. I can't get all the steps in my action to save when I reopen Illustrator. Particularly "show all layers". I am working in 10.4.11, and I don't see any Illustrator updates available to me at this time. Thanks!

    That's funny it doesn't happen here and don' get this wrong but it seems odd that you have been working with CS 4 all this time and never brought this issue up before.
    Of course you could be on windows and it could be a platform specific issue though it seems odd that all this time has passed and it is the first we are hearing about it.
    This is what my CS4 looks like after I relaunch AI.

  • Moving swatches from CS4 to CS5

    I have just bought AI CS5 and have not been able to switch over all my saved swatches in "user defined" from CS4 to CS5. Can someone advise me on how to do this?  thanks.

    If you are on a Mac the user folder is here:
    Macintosh HD/Users/your user name/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings/en_US (or whichever language you use) . And the CS5 folder is in teh same place only called Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings.
    I would use the ase export though and then import into AI CS5.

  • Create folders for brush groups, like swatch folders CS4

    I enjoy the folders in the swatch palette,
    can we add something like this for brushes,? right now it groups brushes by brush type when listing brushes, scatter, art etc,
    I`d like to be able to drag/drop brushes into different folders, and name the folders, then be able to save those folders out as brush groups (brush libraries), but not necessarily all the brush folders or brushes on that palette, just the brush folders we select.

    I`d also like to be able to, in "list view" of the brushes palette, as you hover over a brush name, a pop up window about 4x4 cm appears showing the shape of the pattern of that brush, the thumb view doesnt give me the name feedback I need and the list view omits the pattern shape,
    The pop up of the brush head also allows me to identify the exact shape variation of the brush in list view, I prefer list view as identifying a brush by name is important, thumb view is not large enough and besides this I identify the words quicker, but then the brush head pop up would allow clearer identification of different variants within a brush group, helpful when your using all kinds of floral swirl brushes and they look very similiar, different organic brushes with slight variations like this are also hard to "name' and by name identify the differences unless you can see  a clear visual of the brush head..
