CName

CNAME (80 characters) is in the data dictionary, currently the field value is derived from concatenating first name and last name.
What need to be done so that I can manual input the value into this field and save it into the database?

I have had my domain name (from go daddy) forwarded to my long .mac website address for some time now prior to this update. What the update is supposed to offer is actually replacing that long website name with your actual domain name. So people won't see .mac/iweb/blah...blah....blah. Instead just your domain name; how a site should be. That is why you have to create an alias for that through your registrar. I was not able to find anything on go daddy's site, but I'll let you know when they return my e-mail. Forwarding your domain is a good alternative though. That way you can have a short real domain name on buiness cards, etc. but when it is entered into a browser, it simply loads that other long site name.

  • "SOME" devices can resolve the ALIAS (CNAME record) for a device, but not the REAL name (A record) - Why? How do I fix this?

I'm running the DNS server role on Windows Server 2012 R2 on a physical machine on my home network.
My AD is configured with a non-registered name - let's say it's "home.acme.ca" and the DNS server is configured to host that zone.  I also configured a 2nd zone in the DNS server called "myinf.acme.ca".  They both run on a physical
server with an IP of 192.168.1.10
The DHCP server on my Cable Modem is configured to hand out 192.168.1.10 as the only DNS server to every device on my network.  On my servers (with static IP addresses), 192.168.1.10 is configured as the only DNS server available for them.
I took the DNS servers from my Cable Provider and configured a Forwarder on my server to send name resolution requests to them only if my DNS server can not answer the request - basically for any name resolution request that does not end with ".home.acme.ca"
    or ".myinf.acme.ca"
The "home.acme.ca" zone is populated with 'A' records for all of the physical and virtual servers and PC's on my network.
The "myfin.acme.ca" zone is populated with 'CNAME' records that point directly to the 'A' record in "home.acme.ca" - for example, I have a serve named s000abc123ww.home.acme.ca with an 'A' record providing an IP address of 192.168.1.20 and
I created a 'CNAME' (alias) record named 'webserver.myinf.acme.ca' which points to the 'A' record 's000abc123ww.home.acme.ca'
2 of my 6 machines can resolve the alias but not the real name of the server!
.10 is the Domain Controller.  All of the other machines (except .98) are members of the home.acme.ca domain.
I attempted to ping 's000abc123ww.home.acme.ca' AND 'webserver.myinf.acme.ca' on the following 6 computers.  I used the fully qualified name in all cases.
4 of the below machines are able to resolve BOTH names.  The other 2 can resolve the Alias but not the real name!
I don't understand how this is possible, but I would like to fix it...!!!  Please help?
    .10 - Server 2012 R2 (Physical) -  Hosts Active Directory and DNS.
    .20 - Server 2012 R2 (Virtual)   -  Runs SQL Server
    .21 - Server 2012 R2 (Virtual)   -  Runs Apache
.22 - Server 2012 R2 (Virtual)  -   Runs Apache.  This is the device I am trying to ping (s000abc123ww)
    .98 - Windows 7 (Physical)
    .99 - Windows 7  (Virtual)
.21 (which is configured nearly identically to .20 and .22) can resolve and ping the Alias, but not the real name.
.98 can also resolve and ping the Alias, but not the real name.
The rest of the machines can resolve and ping both the alias and the real name.
All of the Virtual Machines are running under Hyper-V on the .10 physical server.
All the devices are on the same subnet.
Thank in advance to anyone who can help me understand and correct this problem!
    Jim

    Hi,
CNAME resource records are recommended for use in the following scenarios:
    • When a host that is specified in an A resource record in the
same zone needs to be renamed
    • When a generic name for a well-known server, such as www, must resolve to a group of individual computers (each with individual A resource records) that provide the same
service, for example, a group of redundant Web servers
Therefore please try to create your CNNAM record in the same zone and try again.

  • Creating a CNAME on Network Solutions

I am trying to create my first website with iWeb on me.com using a Domain Name I created at Network Solutions.  And of course the instructions for iWeb don't quite match the forms at Network Solutions.  I found how to create a personal domain name on my me.com account.  It tells me to define web.me.com as the CNAME at my regristar's website.  I found the account manager tool for CNAMEs at Network Solutions and am given two boxes to fill out:  "alias" and "other host"  The "other host" box has a radio button.  Then there is another box with a radio button labeled "Refers to Host Name" and there are two choices: "www" or "@(none).  I can check either the "Refers to Host Name" radio button or the "Other Host".  I am guessing that I should check "Other host" and that is where I enter "web.me.com".  Can some confirm?

The alias field should have the 'www' and the '@' symbols with the CNAME being set for both that then forwards to your host web.me.com.
The @ represents your domain name which is http://domain.com and then the www represents your sub domain which is http://www.domain.com.  For both these options to work both 'www' and '@' need to have CNAME's forwarded to web.me.com.
If there is no option to set a CNAME for both of these - (there should be though), then you need to set the CNAME for one, possibly the www and then use web forwarding to forward the @ to the www.
Set it up like this and see what happens.

  • My iWeb site hosted on PowWeb not showing up with old URL - CNAME issue?

Since Apple migrated my .mac account to MobileMe, the site I was updating and hosting on PowWeb shows only the old uncorrected site. When I publish the URL I get a weird MobileMe URL which doesn't work well as people are used to the original URL. Very confusing!
I've called PowWeb and they seem to understand the issue, but still not working. Although they did say it might take some time to take effect.
How do I get the site to to use the original URL rather than the Mobile Me URL?
What is the appropriate CNAME for MobileMe, if that's the problem?
    Thanks!!

The PowWeb Tech suggested I need more than web.me.com, like IP addresses, a record names.
Doing it that way and doing it via URL forwarding are mutually exclusive. It's up to you to decide. It's much easier to just fix the URL forwarding which is currently botched than to start messing with IP's, CNAMEs and A Records.
So I need to go into PowWeb and change the URL forwarding to: http://web.me.com/markh47/Garfield_LAX/Join.html ?
    Yes.
Do you have any idea under what category name that would be?
Ask them how to change your URL forwarding. Normally you just type your corrected web.me.com url into a form on line.

  • Unable to run the application via DNS CName record.

I have  Windows Server 2008R2 running an application that connects to a database via a DNS CNAME record. The application was working fine until after yesterday when it could no longer
connect to the database. The database server is up and running without any issues. You have verified remote connectivity to the database server from your workstation.
How would you troubleshoot the issue and what are the steps to resolve it?

It might be that the application does not support using aliases for DNS resolution. You will need to contact your application developer/vendor for assistance.
To make sure that DNS resolution works properly from the infrastructure level, you can simply use
nslookup and make sure that the resolution is done properly.

  • Leopard, DNS trouble with CNAMES

    Hello,
Hopefully someone in the forums will be able to help me out with this. Apple's phone support for this problem was extremely frustrating and left me extremely disappointed with the company and the purchase of my first Mac. The "2nd teir" support technician couldn't even adequately describe to me what DNS does and refused to transfer me to a more qualified technician.
I've found that Leopard does not seem to handle DNS CNAME -> IP address lookups. An example is listed below. This is not limited to SSH. I have problems with HTTP connections as well. It's just easier to post the text. Has anyone else encountered this and come up with a solution?
    cncuxmbp01:~ kcurrie$ nslookup splunk.tare.local
    Server: 161.179.68.76
    Address: 161.179.68.76#53
    splunk.tare.local canonical name = cncux1z06.us.aegon.com.
    Name: cncux1z06.us.aegon.com
    Address: 161.179.77.141
    cncuxmbp01:~ kcurrie$ ssh splunk.tare.local
ssh: Error resolving hostname splunk.tare.local: nodename nor servname provided, or not known

The problem is that dot-local names are looked up using Multicast DNS on Mac OS X. Trying adding "local" to your list of search domains in the Network pref pane. That will work around the problem.

  • IWEB, CNAME, Personal domain name

If anyone could provide some advice it would be very much appreciated - Tom thanks for you earlier help. I attach the latest email to Apple Support.
Hi Arthur, (The Apple Support Consultant)
We still have the same problems, even after entirely deleting all websites, idisks etc and carrying out the steps you asked (even though this is what we had already explained to you that we had done!). To requalify we have:
    a) Ensured that we have a proper domain name (www.mpi.com.au)
    b) Ensured that we have created a CNAME alias (www.mpi.com.au -> web.mac.com)
    c) Associating the name www.mpi.com.au as our personal domain
    d) Allowed more than 48 hrs
    e) no case sensitivities
    f) publish to site WITHOUT registering www.mpi.com.au to dotmac, works perfectly (ie from web with http://web.mac.com/mpimpi/Sites/index.html and when you log into .mac ([email protected]) and check My Pages, any of the pages work properly.
    g) more interesting is when you log into .mac ([email protected]) after registering www.mpi.com.au as our personal domain and republish whole site and check the account settings personal domain you see www.mpi.com.au listed and when you click on it you see a redirection to web.mac.com and then to http://www.apple.com/dotmac.
    h) Further interesting effects occur when you log into .mac ([email protected]) and check My Pages, any of the pages (ie "About Us" redirects to http://www.mpi.com.au/Sites/About_Us.html) and then to http://www.mac.com/account_error.html. (Apples I'm Sorry - Our records show that the account you're attempting to connect to either does not exist or is currently inactive page).
    i) the account is paid for and appears to be active!
    DNS entries:
    Host Record type Value

    webmail.mpi.com.au. A 64.13.248.146
    www.mpi.com.au CNAME web.mac.com.
Arthur, we realy need to get this resolved can we get developer/senior problem solver assistance. I think that the items points g & h are very relevant!

After great assistance from Apple (thanks Arthur!!) and our new DNS service provider we have our website online and working as required. The resolution required a switch to another DNS service provider.
We are now using SecuritySpace (www.securityspace.net, www.securityspace.com). They are extremely competent, very responsive and a pleasure to deal with. I've suggest that Apple list a set of known DNS providers that dotmac clients should deal with. I cc'ed SecuritySpace support on this mail.

  • Personal Domain - Problem with CNAME

Video nerd here who knows zero about web...
My website han't been touched in about 5 years since I had it built. I decided to buy iWeb 08 specifically so I could do my own thing and still use the web address I've been using for years.
I followed all the directions from iWeb, and got my host on the phone to change my cname settings. They released all the permissions for me to do that, and when we tried, we got this error:
CNAME web.mac.com.' is invalid (CNAME aliases to zone name are not allowed per RFC 2219))
They guy on the phone with me at Intermedia said he didn't know what was up. He tried to find answers on Apple's site, but no luck.
Anybody here able to give me a hand with this?
    Much appreciated!
    Thanks.

  • CName to third party server

    Hi,
I am working with an applet which is not working in the expected way. I am including the applet in a JSP which calls the Java Jar and Codebase from a third party server.
It is identified that the problem is with access to third party server. To solve this, I have been asked to create a CName to third party server and call the Java Jar and Codebase from that server.
Can anyone please suggest me how to do this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Perhaps you are using Firefox without IE TAB plugin.
Applets works fine with IE using the OBJECT tag.
Firefox, Netscape and other works fine with traditional APPLET tag.
Perhaps you must to detect wath kind of browser is being used by means of java scripting.
    Following example may help you.

  • AD FS Device Registration CNAME records

I researched all over but couldn't find an answer, I am hoping someone can help me or lead me to a solution/answer. I have two (2) AD FS farm in the same Active Directory domain. I will call them sts.contoso.com and sts-test.contoso.com. I need to setup/enable
device registration on both. First the sts-test and then the sts. Everywhere I have read it says to use EnterpriseRegistration.contoso.com for DNS/CNAME. Can I use any another name other than EnterpriseRegistration? The issue I am facing is that both my AD
FS uses same internal DNS at contoso.com. so if I create a CNAME EnterpriseRegistration.contoso.com and link to sts-test.contoso.com, then I will not be able to create another CNAME EnterpriseRegistration.contoso.com and link to sts.contoso.com.
can I modify this DNS suffix to say EnterpriseRegistration1.contoso.com and EnterpriseRegistration2.contoso.com? Will this work?
    Thanks

Hi Isaac.. no I don't believe that's possible.. I'd suggest using another (subordinate) zone, e.g. test.contoso.com and then placing the appropriate records beneath, or using a different domain. There's nothing that binds the chosen AD FS domain name to
the AD domain per se, so it could even be foo.com, assuming the appropriate zone is registered for internal and external (internet) use.

  • How Did You Set-up Your CNAME at GoDaddy

I'm looking at the GoDaddy control panel for domains and comparing to what Apple says to do and the fields don't match up. What did you enter into the GoDaddy fields ---
    1) Enter an Alias Name:
    2) Points To Host Name:
    3) TTL:
And most importantly, did it work!!!

Do a Google search for "GoDaddy CNAME".
This returned a site with detailed instructions complete with screenshots.

  • Server 2012 Print Server and DNS CNAME - setspn advice

    Hi,
I am building a new Server 2012 Print server. What I would like to do is utilise a DNS CNAME when I deploy the printer, rather than its host name.
I have used 'setspn' to accomplish this, running the following command:
    setspn -A HOST/<ALIAS> <hostname>
Now when I browse the alias I can see the installed printer. The problem I have is when I then deploy this via Group Policy it uses the servers host name instead, but it does work. If I manually edit
the GPO to reflect the alias name instead it does not deploy the printer. Moreover the indication on the 2012 server has gone so it does not see that it has any printers deployed.
When I browse the computers host name and try to manually install the printer it will state that it is downloading the drivers but never seems to complete. If I browse it's alias and try the same
thing I receive an error stating that it couldn't connect to the printer. The client machine in this instance is Windows 7 SP1 x64.
What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Howard

I've been struggling with the same problem, for a Windows 2012 R2 print server.
I've added SPN entries and registry tweaks (OptionalHostnames, DisableStrictNameChecking, DnsOnWire etc.), but still couldn't connect printers using the alias, even though I could browse shares on the server, using the alias.
While not explicitly covering 2012 R2, this KB article helped me:
    KB2546625.
Adding the alias to the local hosts file solved it for me.
Now, I wanted to be sure that I wasn't applying a bunch of unnecessary tweaks, so I went ahead and removed all registry tweaks (including DnsOnWire mentioned in the KB article), the SPN entry for the alias and rebooted - it still works!
In my case, maybe on Windows Server 2012 R2 in general, all that was needed was to add the alias in the local hosts file.

  • Create CName as an existing name of A record

    Hello all,
Is there a way that I can create a Cname as an existing A record name?
I got this following error message if I tried to create a cname.
A new record cannot be created.
An alias (CNAME) record cannot be added to
this DNS name. The DNS name contains records that are incompatible with the CNAME record.
I would like to do the followings.
    1) There is a print server, printserver01vm.
    2) I deploy a new print server, ps01vm, to replace the old one.
    3) To avoid for the users to remap all the network printers on their client PCs, I would like to create a Cname as like the current Print server name (printserver01vm) <a record>
    4) Cname will poin to the new print server (ps01vm)
    5) got the above error.
If there is a better solution, please let me know. It would be appreciated.
    Kris

    Hi Kris,
It seems like you have new print server fully up and running. If yes, then you can remove the old print server's host record (A record) and create alias (cname record) printserver01vm pointing it to new print server ps01vm.
You want to uncheck "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" on your old print server so it will not try to re-register on DNS.
And yes, you will not be able to create cname record if the A record exists with same name.

  • Certificates CNAME or Host (A) Record?

We just installed Exch 2013 but have not put it into production yet. We are confused about what domains to include in our certificate request. Our ISP host our email and Network Solutions host our domain and we would like to keep it that way. We have just

intend to use that A record with Exchange 2013.
This is our setup with exchange 2013:
    1. Our (internal) root domain name is different from our (external) email domain name:  ad.domainname.com vs. domainname.com  - so we do not use split-dns (I think)
    2. We need to use the same static IP that is in use with our SBS2003 box.
    3. We will be using Outlook 2010 and 2013 to connect users to Exchange mailboxes.
    4. We want to use Outlook Web Access, ecp, Active Sync, & Autodiscover
Question1: We read in this article:
http://www.mustbegeek.com/configure-external-and-internal-url-in-exchange-2013/  that we needed to create CNAME records at our public DNS server (Network Solutions) to point to mail.domainname.com . Do we create CNAME records or add another Host (A)
record that points mail.domainname.com to our IP address?
Question2:  Do we also create a similar record for autodiscover.domain.com?
Question3:  Internally, what address do we use to access mailbox for non-outlook users?  Would it also be
    https://mail.domainname.com?
question4: For the certificate, how do we make sure our Outlook 2010/13 clients can connect to Exchange? Do we include the Intranet domain selections for the certificate -such as autodiscover.ad.domainname.com?
    Thanks!

Seriously consider deploying split DNS.  It makes all this stuff work so much easier.  It's not at all hard to do.
Your CN should be the hostname in the URL used for OWA and other web services, e.g., webmail.domain.com.
You need SANs for every e-mail domain you host.  If you host just domain.com, then you need just one SAN, autodiscover.domain.com.
If you host multiple domains, you can use SRV records instead for Autodiscover and reduce the number of SANs you need to put in the SAN.
All the Autodiscover records can point to the same IP address as webmail.
If you don't deploy split-brain DNS, then you'll need to add the internal name in the certificate as well, e.g., webmail.domain.internal.  But deploy split-brain DNS and enjoy the benefits.  In my opinion it's stupid to hairpin traffic out to the
Internet and back in again through your firewall just because you don't have split-brain DNS.
Configure Set-ClientAccessServer -AutodiscoverServiceInternalUri to use autodiscover.domain.com so you don't have to add server names as SANs.
For the hostname, you can use webmail, mail, owa, pluto, bigfish, or whatever you want, just so you define it in your virtual directory URLs and include it in your certificate.
