Coaxial cable for new build installation

Hi folks, We are waiting on the completion of a new build and as part of our list of requests of the developer they have agreed to fit Sky TV cables for us while they are doing the rest of the first fix. We were invited round yesterday to view the work so far and it looks like they are fitting two runs of their standard coaxial cable rather than the "shotgun" type satellite cables that we're used to Sky installers fitting. Will this standard coax be suitable for HD and be future proof against UHD broadcasts? Many thanks!

It really depends on what type of coax it is. For best results it should be WF100 coax cable or its equivalent (foam dielectric, with both copper braiding and copper foil screening). Sky use 'shotgun' WF65, I believe.

  • New build installation - 4 months and still waitin...

    Hi
As with many posts on this forum, we have a major problem with phone line installation. Back in April I ordered a new phone line to be installed, together with an Infinity broadband package, ready for my move into a house on a new development. We moved in on 2nd May and was told installation would take place on 23rd May. No engr showed and when I rang to query this I was told he was working on the exchange and I would be updated. Needless to say no update was forthcoming. When I called again I was then told that the developers working on behalf of the estate had not finished their side of the work. Having spoken to them, I found out the delay was being caused by OpenReach and the cabling was not completed. This story has now been repeated every time I call, and it is now coming up to 4 months since my order was placed. I keep being given a new installation date which is then cancelled a few days beforehand. The last straw has come today; I was due an update on the 23rd which was not forthcoming, I have now been told there will be no further news until 17th August!
The delay has cost us a fortune in mobile phone credit, along with buying and topping up 2 dongles. The phone signal here is almost non existent, and as both my son and I are disabled with chronic health conditions there is a major concern in case we can't get a signal. Back in May I collapsed at home, with no one else here. I was lapsing in and out of consiousness but managed to crawl to a door and get a signal to call an ambulance. If it happens again I may not be so lucky.
How can BT and OpenReach justify the fact that it takes at least 4 months to carry out the necessary cabling work? People started moving into their new houses at the start of the year so why did BT decide it wasnt necessary to carry out the work in readiness for the new residents?
One of the most frustrating things is that when we call BT, unless they speak to the OpenReach engineer there and then, they have no idea what is going on. The engineer may have updated the records two weeks before but we are never told what is still needed and why. I have called the engineer myself, but am told he cannot deal with individual queries, even though I am calling on behalf of a number of residents! BT have the monopoly on a product that they cannot supply - surely it is time to let other companies become involved in line installation, or are they scared they will lose out due to their own bad service?
A number of residents here, including myself, are now going to escalate the matter to Ofcom, our MP and also the national media. Questions need to be asked as to why new build homes are without essential methods of communication for so long in this age of technology? We are also going to be looking at starting legal action against BT for not fulfilling contractual obligations, and claiming compensation to cover the mounting costs we are paying out. From the amount of postings here we are not alone in this matter, and surely BT can see this can't continue?
Plese feel free to add your thoughts to this issue.

  • BT Infinity for new build

    Hi,
I've tried searching the forum but can't seem to find posts that are related to my situation.
Basically I'm moving into a new build.  There isn't a phone line yet.  The postcode checker doesn't think BT Infinity is available, so I can't order.
However, as advised by the FAQ at http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/BT-Infinity-Availability-FAQs/td-p/181603, I checked on the wholesale checker www.btwholesale.com/adslchecker and it says it's all available.  Any advice please?

  • Dual RG6 Coaxial Cables for Cisco Aironet 1310

    Hi All,
I would like to discuss if someone has experience using RG6 cables with "F" connectors (instead of Cisco cables) for the connection of the Aironet 1310 with its Power Injector. I mean, if the Cisco dual RG6 cables have something particular, compared to standard RG6 cables with "F" connectors.
Thanks in advance for any comment.
    Regards,
    Igor Sotelo.

Nothing special, other than it's a reasonably high grade of cabling.
Any replacement that you use should have the same loss per foot/meter (or better), and be capable of carrying the power (some inner dielectric may not be as thermally stable).
If you intend to go a longer distance, keep in mind that the power will dissipate at some distance to the point where the AP may come up, but get flaky under load due to the inability of the cable to pass enough power for the higher processing load.
    Good Luck

  • OS for new build w/K8N Neo4 Platinum

I will be building a new machine using an MSI Neo4 Platinum mobo. This is my 1st build. I have a registered WIN98 SE installation disk but fear it won’t work as MSI advises nvidia 4 chipset will not work with it. I do not want any more hassles than I already anticipate. Is it possible to buy the Pro Upgrade and do a direct install without 98 SE being installed or do I have to buy the full Pro? Concern being that by installing 98 first, I will trigger mobo errors prior to even getting a chance to upgrade. Thanks.

Again thanks to everyone; Hansh & Mike, you appear to have some experience with using the Upgrade, so let me ask you a question. Have you ever done it with this board in particular?  The concept I believe would be that during the upgrade, the board itself doesn’t know (recognize) the OS until the install is complete, therefore it has no idea that SE was ever present, correct? To follow this train of thought – in order to insure that no remainders of SE are left hanging around on my HD prior to initiating this install, I would probably be best off if I started with a clean HD versus putting the old HD w/SE installed in; do you agree or should it make no difference?
Continuing, re: use of upgrade and hassles. I’m a college student and classes start next week, so I need to do this ASAP hence reduce hassle potential. The economics of all of this are: Upgrade via Bookstore is $71.00; best Home OEM is same amount; XP Pro OEM is $95. Dollar wise Upgrade makes best sense if hassle free; but some are saying go full OEM as no hassle. What’s the consensus (p.s. concern w/OEM = hassles w/MS during repeated changes I will be making to hdwre configuration as part of my install as will be adding one piece at a time to check for failures as I go. Thanks.

  • Demarc question for new construction & installs RG6, RG9, Cat5e, Cat6????

I am having a new home built in a neibrohood that has GigaPower in Austin.. What I can't seem to find out is what kind of connection GigaPower uses from the outside of the house to the inside of the house?   I need to tell my builder what kind of cabling to make sure is connected between the demarc and my networking cabinet.  (for instance does GigaPower actually connect a fiber all the way to the modem? or does it connect to a transeiver on the side of the house and convert to some form of copper... and to that end what form of copper?)  Thanks all

The Optical Network Terminal (ONT) mounted on the outside of your house will be connect to the Residential Gateway on the inside of your home using Cat 5e/Cat 6 Ethernet cabling.
My understanding is that the ONT is powered by an AT&T provided Power Supply Unit plugged into a wall outlet inside your home within 100' of the ONT.  This contains more inforrmation (though I'm not sure that the BBU information is current).

  • Which firewire cable for new MacBook Pro and Canon HV20?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro and want to transfer video from my Canon HV20 camcorder (using FinalCut Express). The Canon instructions say to use a "DV cable" and I've learned that the MacBook Pro only has an "800 fire wire" port. Can someone give me the exact type of cable that I should get (even my local Apple Store couldn't help me).
    Thanks!

I'm surprised that the folks at the Apple Store couldn't guide you. You just need a firewire cable with the proper fw400 connector on one end and a fw800 connector on the other. Here's one source for both cables and adapters:

  • Downloading Adobe Apps for New Build

I have a new system arriving this week, and would like to dl my Adobe apps in readiness,  (Photoshop CS5, Premiere Pro CS5, inDesign CS5 & Lightroom 3) .  So do I just dl the Trial versions and then use my keys and reactivate?  It is not clear from the Adobe Download page, and my Internet connectionn is sluggish at the moment while one of those trail versions is dowloading.

Thanks. I did have some of the installation files, and tracked down the download page for the others. You just have to go to your orders history and the links are there.  I shall try and be more organised in future and keep a New Installation folder on my back up drives.
I had a bizarre experience while searching.  A chat window popped up and I was messaging with an Adobe help person, but they did not seem to understand English, and took forever to reply. They didn't give me one useful bit of advise. It was a relief when the message window dropped out and I could go back to finding the info myself!

  • Round cables for new system

I went and ordered my new system components last night and now I need to figure out what cables I will need.
I want to use the round cables as the flat ribbon cables impede airflow too much.
I am not sure whether I want to put a floppy drive in or not as it isn't really needed these days, although it is nice for backing up Intenet Explorer Bookmarks quickly.
Which round cables should I get for my new system, how would you connect them and where have you found the best prices on them?
I believe the MSI GeForce4 Ti4200 video card comes with a round cable in the retail box I ordered so that takes care of one of them.
    I appreciate the help.
My system is going to be as follows:
    MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR Mobo
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton processor
Mushkin 512 MB PC2700 222 Level II Hi Performance RAM
    MSI G4Ti4200-VTD8X128 video card
Western Digital 80GB 8MB buffer HDD

    TDK VeloCD 40x12x40 CDRW

    Mike,
Yes round cables are the way to go and they connect the same way as your ribbon cables. I use VANTEC in my machines but there are many good manufacturers. Try this link to check for the best prices http://www.pricewatch.com/
The round cables are also very easy to tywrap out of the way for maximum airflow as you mentioned )

  • Questions on Marvell vs. intel Raid setup for new build

I’m getting ready to do my first build this weekend, and had some questions on the Asus p9x79pro motherboard’s raid controllers.  They are:
What is the difference between the Marvell controller and the intel software controller?
Why would I use one over the other?
Do the Marvell raid controllers need to be pre-installed using the F6 method, same as the intel raid controllers?
Here is my planned drive arrangement, feedback appreciated.
    (1) Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)  - OS (win7 64 bit), pagefile, & programs,  6gb sata on SSD caching port
    (2) Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive - RAID 0 Media and projects, 6b sata port
    (1) Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive - media cache & renders
    (1) WB Black 32mb cache 3.0 Sata - Exports and non video file storage
Asus BD burner on 3gb port
      Thanks

What is the difference between the Marvell controller and the intel software controller?
I haven't tested it, but rumors are that Intel is marginally faster than Marvell.
Why would I use one over the other?
It depends on the number of ports in your system. That can be motherboard dependent.
Do the Marvell raid controllers need to be pre-installed using the F6 method, same as the intel raid controllers?
No. You can define a raid after you installed your OS by simply going into the BIOS.
On my motherboard, I have 2 Intel SATA 6 G ports and 2 Marvell SATA 6 G ports. The rest are SATA 3 G.
If that is the same in your case, I would do the following:
Crucial M4 on Intel SATA 6G
WD Black on Intel SATA 6G
    2 x WD Black/64 on Marvell SATA 6G in raid0
WD Black/32 on Intel SATA 3G
    DVD/BDR on Intel SATA 3G
one SATA 3G for eSATA connection.

  • Where can I get Net 8 on its own for new remote installation?

I require to install Net 8 on a remote SQL Server/Windows 2000 Server and as the connection is very delicate I need to just copy the installation file for Net 8 across.
I have it in our 9i pack and on the Oracle Forms and reports CD but how do I get it on its own? Is in on a resource pack?

I haven't seen a small (standard) install since 7.3.x. Do you need 8.0.x or 8.1.x?
I guess you could try in your PC first to customize a stage area to cut down on some subdirs/files. Maybe it's easier to just send the CD by mail?
At a minimum OCI, Net and RSF files are required, maybe ~50MB (or less?). But there's no real minimal standard Client install. (Maybe 10g Instant Client will change that!)

  • 10.4.8 for New Computer Installable on Old Computer?

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro to replace/upgrade a 3+ year old PowerBook G4 running 10.2.8. Can I use the OS install disks for 10.4.8 that came with the MacBook Pro to install Tiger on my old PowerBook (it has sufficient RAM, HD space and other technical requirements)? If so, is there anything special I need to do to avoid losing any applications or other items on the older PowerBook? (I have already successfully transferred everything from the PowerBook to the new MacBook Pro.) Thanks for any assistance.

"Can I use the OS install disks for 10.4.8 that came with the MacBook Pro to install Tiger on my old PowerBook"
No. The MacBook is Intel based. The Powerbook is not. An OS for Intel macs will not install on PowerPC based Macs. besides, even if you could it would be illegal, as you'd be violating the single-user license agreement that accompanies the MacBook.

  • Download link for new build of AFCS?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't find the download on
the labs site or anywhere else....

    Hi Rick,
Yup, gotta get it through the dev portal - our main factors
there is that you must be logged in to get the SDK, and you must
have made it through the Terms of Use check in order to log in.
This makes sure that anyone accessing the SDK is legally promising
not to redistribute it, or any other mean stuff.

  • New Build Connection Problems

    Hi,
Hoping someone can help me with their past experience or knowledge. I have been in my new build home for a couple of weeks now and am struggling to get a phone/fibre optic connection. Both BT and the OpenReach address checkers have absolutely no information regarding my address even though I have seen both of their vans working down our street (and I confirmed that they were working on the phone lines).
When talking to BT I was told I would need to pay for £130 for a line installation in order for them to tell us what services we could use?!! So potentially I would be out of pocket for nothing, perhaps even unusable broadband.
The street just down from mine is established and shows fibre optic available and taking orders, so I guess my question is who do I need to talk to in order for my new address to get registered too? I find it really weird that the process for new builds is so convoluted and people face massive delays getting connected...
    Cheers.

  • Using iPod Hi-Fi with Digital Audio (Coaxial) Cable

I have a Bandridge Digital Optical & Coaxial Audio Switch Box which allows me to connect multiple devices to output sound through my ipod hifi via digital optical or digital coaxial cable(it actually converts from optical to coaxial as well). The problem is all devices connect perfectly through the optical ports on the switch box however my PC only has a digital(S/PDIF) coaxial port so I use a digital coaxial cable for this but no sound is output through my ipod hifi? Can the ipod hifi output sound from a digital coaxial source?

With what you currently have it is impossible to do what you want.
    However, take a look at http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/ .
I have seen many plaudits for this on the boards, but have no experience with it whatsoever!
